Robust Nonlinear Control Of Brushless Dc Motors For Direct-Drive Robotic Applications, N. Hemati, J. S. Thorp, Ming-Chuan Leu Jan 1990

Robust Nonlinear Control Of Brushless Dc Motors For Direct-Drive Robotic Applications, N. Hemati, J. S. Thorp, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The control problem associated with brushless DC motors (BLDCMs) for direct-drive robotic applications is considered. In order to guarantee the high-performance operation of BLDCMs in such applications, the effects of reluctance variations and magnetic saturation are accounted for in the model. Such a BLDCM model constitutes a highly coupled and nonlinear dynamic system. Using the transformation theory of nonlinear systems, a feedback control law, which is shown to compensate for the system nonlinearities, is derived. Conditions under which such a control law is possible are presented. The need for the derivation of explicit commutation strategies is eliminated, resulting in reduction …

A Differential Equation Approach To Swept Volumes, Ming-Chuan Leu, Denis Blackmore Jan 1990

A Differential Equation Approach To Swept Volumes, Ming-Chuan Leu, Denis Blackmore

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An approach to the analysis of swept volumes is introduced. It is shown that every smooth Euclidean motion or sweep, can be identified with a first-order, linear, ordinary differential equation. This sweep differential equation provides useful insights into the topological and geometrical nature of the swept volume of an object. A certain class, autonomous sweeps, is identified by the form of the associated differential equation, and several properties of the swept volumes of the members of this class are analyzed. The results are applied to generate swept volumes for a number of objects. Implementation of the sweep differential equation approach …

Effect Of Central Station Photovoltaic Plant On Power System Security, Badrul H. Chowdhury Jan 1990

Effect Of Central Station Photovoltaic Plant On Power System Security, Badrul H. Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The value of photovoltaic (PV) plants to electric utilities is investigated under constraints of power system security. It is suggested that the generally adopted methods of analysis for determining the capacity credit, energy displacement, and production cost savings due to the PV plants have neglected the adverse conditions that may arise out of a random preselection of a substation where PV power is injected into the system. The author presents an extensive approach to determining the realistic value of a PV plant to the utility. The method consists of using a power flow algorithm to determine system conditions under specific …

Structural Characteristics Of Sr1-Xlaxti 3+Δ As A Function Of Oxygen Partial Pressure At 1400°C, S. A. Howard, J. K. Yau, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The structural characteristics of Sr1-x Lax TiO3+δ (0≤x≤0.4) at 1400°C have been investigated as a function of ambient oxygen partial pressure. A modified Rietveld pattern-fitting structure-refinement program [H. M. Rietveld, J. Appl. Crystallogr. 2, 65 (1969)] was used to determine the nature of the distortions of the fundamental perovskite unit cell, the degree of lattice perfection, and the cation vacancy concentrations. Specimens equilibrated in forming gas displayed a linear relation between x, the lattice parameters, and the degree of lattice perfection while those samples annealed in air and oxygen deviated significantly from linearity. A monoclinic distortion of …

Aluminum Deposition On Polyimides: The Effect Of In Situ Ion Bombardment, M. J. Vasile, Bonnie Bachman Sep 1989

Aluminum Deposition On Polyimides: The Effect Of In Situ Ion Bombardment, M. J. Vasile, Bonnie Bachman

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The chemistry of the Al polyimide interface is examined by x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy sputter profiling. Al deposited on polyimide films without an in situ Ar backsputter shows a clearly defined 50‐Å Al2O3 layer just prior to the polyimide. This layer is identified by the O/Al atom ratio at 1.5, and the binding energy of the Al 2p transition. There is a clear separation of the Al/Al2O3/polyimide layers in the sputter profiles. Deposition of Al on polyimide surfaces after Argon backsputtering produces a diffuse Al/polyimide interface with no Al2O3 present. There …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thin films of CdS were grown onto (111) silicon substrates (wafers 2 in in diameter) by employing a horizontal, low-pressure MOCVD system. The observed growth of heteroepitaxial films occurred in the temperature range of 275-325 ±5 °C. The growth of polycrystalline samples with a high degree of preferred orientation occurred at temperatures above 325 ± 5 °C. The later films exhibited irregularly shaped surface pits about 1 μm in depth. These pits were observed by sectioning the substrates and examining them with an SEM; no significant crystallinity was apparent. X-ray analysis of an heteroepitaxial and a polycrystalline film via a …

Ion Bombardment Of Polyimide Films, Bonnie Bachman, M. J. Vasile Jul 1989

Ion Bombardment Of Polyimide Films, Bonnie Bachman, M. J. Vasile

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Surface modification techniques such as wet chemical etching, oxidizing flames, and plasma treatments (inert ion sputtering and reactive ion etching) have been used to change the surface chemistry of polymers and improve adhesion. With an increase in the use of polyimides for microelectronic applications, the technique of ion sputtering to enhance polymer‐to‐metal adhesion is receiving increased attention. For this study, the argon‐ion bombardment surfaces of pyromellitic dianhydride and oxydianiline (PMDA–ODA) and biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride and phenylene diamine (BPDA–PDA) polyimide films were characterized with x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as a function of ion dose. Graphite and high‐density polyethylene were also examined …

Convergence Properties Of The Waveform Relaxation Method As Applied To Electric Power Systems, Marija D. Ilić, J. K. White, Mariesa Crow May 1989

Convergence Properties Of The Waveform Relaxation Method As Applied To Electric Power Systems, Marija D. Ilić, J. K. White, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Several theoretical results are presented and simple examples examined in order to determine the suitability of waveform relaxation for transient power system simulation. This examination leads to two practical suggestions that can easily be satisfied for power systems. The first is to break the simulation interval into sections, the first of which should be narrow and be used to kill off errors in the initial guess that activate the stiff modes. The second is to partition the system into subsystems that are stable, as this not only aids convergence but ensures multirate numerical stability.

Condensation Coefficient Measurement For Water In The Umr Cloud Simulation Chamber, Donald E. Hagen, John L. Schmitt, Max B. Trueblood, John C. Carstens, Daniel R. White, Darryl J. Alofs Mar 1989

Condensation Coefficient Measurement For Water In The Umr Cloud Simulation Chamber, Donald E. Hagen, John L. Schmitt, Max B. Trueblood, John C. Carstens, Daniel R. White, Darryl J. Alofs

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A systematic series of condensation coefficient measurements of water have been made using the University of Missouri-Rolla cooled-wall expansion chamber which simulates the thermodynamics of cloud. This coefficient is seen to decrease from a value near unity, at the outset of simulation, to a value in the neighborhood of 0.01 toward the end of a simulation. Final values of this coefficient are sufficiently low as to contribute significantly to the broadening of the drop-size distribution in cloud.

Anserlin. A Broad-Band, Low-Profile, Circularly Polarized Antenna, James L. Drewniak, P. E. Mayes

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A technique is presented for improving the performance of low-profile, circularly polarized (CP) radiating-line antennas. The essential elements of the technique pertain to establishing a single traveling wave on an annular sector of conducting strip that is positioned parallel and close to a large conducting surface. The antenna is named the annular sector, radiating-line (ANSERLIN) antenna. Using this technique, the impedance bandwidth becomes so large that it no longer has any bearing on the operating bandwidth. Instead, the pattern shape and axial ratio become the factors that limit the bandwidth. Both senses of circular polarization can be transmitted or received …

Evaluation Of Mass Transport In Copper And Zinc Electrodeposition Using Tracer Methods, H. M. Wang, S. F. Chen, Thomas J. O'Keefe, M. Degrez, R. Winand

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Control of the electro crystallization process is essential in the deposition of metals from aqueous electrolytes. A knowledge of the influence of mass transfer on the metal ion reduction is a critical element in any number of electrolytic processes, particularly where relatively high current densities are desired. The use of more positive ion tracer techniques as a means of experimentally determining some of the mass transport properties of interest are described. Examples for copper, zinc and zinc alloys electrolysis are included. © 1989 Chapman and Hall Ltd.

Measured Spectra Of The Hygroscopic Fraction Of Atmospheric Aerosol Particles, Darryl J. Alofs, Donald E. Hagen, Max B. Trueblood Feb 1989

Measured Spectra Of The Hygroscopic Fraction Of Atmospheric Aerosol Particles, Darryl J. Alofs, Donald E. Hagen, Max B. Trueblood

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The relation between dry diameter (X0) and critical supersaturation (Sc) for atmospheric submicron aerosol particles is investigated using a long term air sampling program at Rolla, Missouri. The particles are passed through an electrostatic aerosol size classifier, and then through an isothermal haze chamber. Results are reported in terms of an apparent volume fraction of soluble material, εv defined such that for particles composed only of ammonium sulfate and water insoluble compounds, εv is the actual volume fraction of soluble material. The probability distribution of εv is found to be approximately Gaussian in …

Sludge Digestion By Anaerobic Fluidized Beds. Ii: Kinetic Model, Bill T. Ray, Ju-Chang Huang, Brian A. Dempsey

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A model has been developed to describe the gas production and soluble-COD variations from the digestion of waste-activated sludge in the anaerobic fluidized-bed reactor. It indicates that a substantial rate increase can be attained by prehydrolysis of the biological sludge, external to the reactor. The model indicates that the rate-limiting step is in the sludge hydrolysis. The model is developed from an assumption of first-order kinetics in a set of series and parallel, irreversible reactions. That is, the formation of soluble substrate is first order with respect to the particulate biomass present, and that the production of methane is first …

Sludge Digestion By Anaerobic Fluidized Beds. I: Lab Performance Data, Ju-Chang Huang, Bill T. Ray, Yao Jiang Huang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study was undertaken to evaluate the laboratory performance of the anaerobic fluidized bed digesting secondary biological sludge at 35° C with four hydraulic-retention times (HRTs): 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 days. In addition, the effects of both operating temperature (15° C, 25° C and 35° C) and the initial sludge solubilization on the digester performance were also examined. It was found that at 35° C, an adequate degree of sludge digestion was obtainable with an HRT of only 1-2 days if the influent biological sludge was presolubilized by treatment with 17.5 meq/L of sodium hydroxide. If no presolubilization was …

Oxidation-Reduction Behavior Of Undoped And Sr-Doped Lamno3 Nonstoichiometry And Defect Structure, J. H. Kuo, Harlan U. Anderson, Don M. Sparlin Jan 1989

Oxidation-Reduction Behavior Of Undoped And Sr-Doped Lamno3 Nonstoichiometry And Defect Structure, J. H. Kuo, Harlan U. Anderson, Don M. Sparlin

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Undoped and Sr-doped LaMnO3 showed reversible oxidation-reduction behavior. These perovskites can be excess, stoichiometric or deficient in oxygen content depending on the specific conditions. Under very reducing conditions decomposition into new phases occurs. Phase stabilities for these oxides were determined. The results showed that Sr doping caused the LaMnO3 to dissociate at higher oxygen activities than those necessary for undoped LaMnO3. Defect models are proposed to interpret the thermogravimetric results in which metal vacancies are assumed for the oxygen excess condition and oxygen vacancies are assumed for the oxygen deficient condition. Thermodynamic properties were calculated which …

Central-Station Photovoltaic Plant With Energy Storage For Utility Peak Load Leveling, Badrul H. Chowdhury Jan 1989

Central-Station Photovoltaic Plant With Energy Storage For Utility Peak Load Leveling, Badrul H. Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The impact of photovoltaic (PV) power generation with energy storage on the electric utility's load shape for load leveling purposes is explored. Results show that utilities employing battery storage for peak load shaving might benefit from use of photovoltaic power, the extent of its usefulness being dependent on the specific load shapes as well as the photovoltaic array orientations. Typical utility load shapes both in the eastern and in the western parts of the US are examined for this purpose. Although photovoltaic power generation seems to have a bigger impact on the load of the western utility, utilities in both …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electrical conductivity and Seebeck measurements on LaCr0.98Nb0.02CrO3 show that the defect structure of the material is mainly controlled by the extrinsic electrons formed by the Nb donors through the electronic compensation process. The experimental results also indicate that this material conducts electricity via a small polaron mechanism with an electron mobility around 0.004-0.01 cm2/V sec between 1100 and 1300°C. © 1989.

Effect Of Volatilization On The Conduction Behavior Of Acceptor‐Doped Chromium Oxide, Rong‐Fong ‐F Huang, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effect of volatilization on the conduction behavior of Li‐ or Mg‐doped Cr2O3 was studied. The Po2 dependence on conduction changed from 1/4 to 3/8 when volatilization occurred. The high‐temperature conduction mechanism of Cr2O3 may be dominated by the formation of Cr vacancies due to the volatilization effect. Copyright © 1989, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved

Characteristic Surfaces For Three-Position Function Generation With Planar Four-Bar Mechanisms, Clark R. Barker, P. L. Tso Jan 1989

Characteristic Surfaces For Three-Position Function Generation With Planar Four-Bar Mechanisms, Clark R. Barker, P. L. Tso

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper considers the relationship between the three-position function-generation problem and the solution space for planar four-bar mechanisms. The two infinities of solutions possible are mapped in a plane to determine the locations where particular types of mechanisms occur. It is possible to generate a contour in the mapping plane which joins together all solutions which possess a common characteristic in regard to their link lengths. This same contour can be displayed in the solution space to ascertain the overall characteristics of potential solutions to the design problem. A numerical example is used for illustrative purposes, but the results can …

Nonlinear Tracking Control Of Brushless Dc Motors For High-Performance Applications, N. Hemati, Ming-Chuan Leu Jan 1989

Nonlinear Tracking Control Of Brushless Dc Motors For High-Performance Applications, N. Hemati, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The tracking control problem associated with brushless DC motors (BLDCMs) for high-performance applications is considered. To guarantee their high-dynamic-performance operation in motion control systems, the magnetic saturation and reluctance variation effects are accounted for in the BLDCM mathematical model. The trajectory tracking control problem is addressed in the context of the transformation theory of nonlinear systems. A nonlinear control law is implemented and shown to compensate for the nonlinearities of a BLDCM. A case study is presented in which a direct-drive inverted pendulum actuated by a BLDCM is used to investigate the effectiveness of the control law. The effectiveness of …

Generic Singularities Of Robot Manipulators, Ming-Chuan Leu, D. K. Pai Jan 1989

Generic Singularities Of Robot Manipulators, Ming-Chuan Leu, D. K. Pai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The singularities of the differential kinematic map, i.e. of the manipulator Jacobian, are considered. The authors first examine the notion of a generic kinematic map, whose singularities form smooth manifolds of prescribed dimension in the joint space of the manipulator. For three-joint robots, an equivalent condition for genericity using determinants is derived. The condition lends itself to symbolic computation and is sufficient for the study of decoupled manipulators, i.e. manipulators that an be separated into a three-joint translating part and a three-joint orienting part. The results are illustrated by analyzing the singularities of two classes of three-joint positioning robots.

Web-Crippling Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Beams, C. Santaputra, M. B. Parks, Wei-Wen Yu Jan 1989

Web-Crippling Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Beams, C. Santaputra, M. B. Parks, Wei-Wen Yu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The structural behavior of high-strength cold-formed steel beams subjected primarily to web crippling is investigated analytically and experimentally. Hat sections and I-beams, formed from five different types of high-strength sheet steels, are investigated under various loading conditions. In addition to the test data gathered in this phase of study, the experimental results obtained from the beam tests conducted at various companies are carefully evaluated. The evaluation indicates that the present available design criteria are not suitable for high-strength materials with yield strengths exceeding 80 ksi (552 MPa). New design formulas are derived for different types of loading conditions on the …
