Postbreakage Behavior Of Heat Strengthened Laminated Glass Under Wind Effects, Chris P. Pantelides, Amy D. Horst, Joseph E. Minor

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Results of a full-scale experimental investigation into the post breakage behavior of heat-strengthened laminated glass subjected to windstorm effects are presented. Two different interlayer constructions and two different glazing configurations are examined. The two interlayer constructions are a PVB polymer and a PVB/PET/PBV composite polymer. The two glazing configurations are a conventional dry glazed system and an unconventional system with a silicone anchor bead. Two test criteria are established that relate to effects of a severe windstorm. The first criterion addresses impact with windborne debris; the second defines a wind-load spectrum that represents a severe windstorm of a 4-hr duration. …

Collapse Behavior Of Pino Suarez Building During 1985 Mexico City Earthquake, Jeng Fuh Ger, Franklin Y. Cheng, Le Wu Lu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the investigation of the collapse behavior of a 22-story steel building during the September 19, 1985, Mexico City earthquake by studying hysteretic behavior, ductility factors of individual structural components, and overall instability of the building. Extensive inelastic analyses have been performed for the building by using the multicomponent seismic input of actual Mexico City earthquake records. It was found that the structural response exceeds the original design ductility of this building, and most girders in the building have severe inelastic deformation. Due to the load redistribution that results from ductile girder failure, local buckling occurred in many …

Battery Energy Storage Technologies, Max Darwin Anderson, Dodd S. Carr

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Battery energy storage systems, comprising lead-acid batteries, power conversion systems, and control systems, are in commercial operation around the world. They are used by three main groups: power generating utilities; power distributing utilities; and major power consumers (such as electric furnace foundries). The principal advantages of battery energy storage systems to generating utilities include load leveling; frequency control; spinning reserve; modular construction; convenient siting; no emissions; and investment deferral for new generation and transmission equipment. Power distributing utilities and major power consumers can avoid costly demand changes by discharging their batteries at peak periods and then recharging with lower cost …

A New Technique To Decompose Closely Spaced Interface And Bulk Trap States Using Temperature Dependent Pulse-Width Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy Method: An Application To Pt/Cds Photodetector, C. W. Wang, Cheng-Hsiao Wu, Jack L. Boone

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel method is presented here to experimentally decompose nonexponential capacitive transients into the appropriate components from the closely spaced deep trap states. Using temperature dependent pulse-width deep level transient spectroscopy (TDP-DLTS) technique, we show for the first time that two bulk trap states and one continuously distributed interface states in (Pt/CdS) photodiodes can be successfully separated. The basic principle is to set the applied pulse width to follow an averaged temperature-dependent capture time constant and divide the DLTS spectrum. In the example of Pt/CdS photodiodes, we show that all physical parameters including thermal activation energies, capture cross sections, and …

On Minimizing Thermal Deflections Of Laminated Plates, Serge Abrate Jan 1993

On Minimizing Thermal Deflections Of Laminated Plates, Serge Abrate

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thermal deflections of symmetrically laminated plates that are continuous over many line supports are determined using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The constitutive equations and the thermal loads are expressed in terms of four non-dimensional lamination parameters. Layups that minimize thermal deflections are determined for several types of composite plates subjected to temperature increases that vary linearly through the thickness.

In Part I of this paper, a dynamic modeling system for the simulation of three-dimensional mechanical assemblies is presented. With this simulation tool, a designer can interactively create an assembly of mechanical components ready for dynamic analysis. The modeling system presented in this paper include» the derivation of the equations of motion of spatial multi-body systems, and the formulation of the equations to model the associated collision detection and collision responses. Part II of this paper is to introduce the geometry modeling and computer simulation of 3D systems.

A Fast Converging, Low Complexity Adaptive Filtering Algorithm, Steven L. Grant Jan 1993

A Fast Converging, Low Complexity Adaptive Filtering Algorithm, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a new adaptive filtering algorithm called fast affine projections (FAP). Its main attributes include RLS (recursive least squares) like convergence and tracking with NLMS (normalized least mean squares) like complexity. This mix of complexity and performance is similar to the recently introduced fast Newton transversal filter (FNTF) algorithm. While FAP shares some similar properties with FNTF it is derived from a different perspective, namely the generalization of the affine projection interpretation of NLMS. FAP relies on a sliding windowed fast RLS (FRLS) algorithm to generate forward and backward prediction vectors and expected prediction error energies. Since sliding …

An Optoelectronic Implementation Of The Adaptive Resonance Neural Network, Donald C. Wunsch, T. P. Caudell, R. J. Marks, R. A. Falk, C. David Capps Jan 1993

An Optoelectronic Implementation Of The Adaptive Resonance Neural Network, Donald C. Wunsch, T. P. Caudell, R. J. Marks, R. A. Falk, C. David Capps

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A solution to the problem of implementation of the adaptive resonance theory (ART) of neural networks that uses an optical correlator which allows the large body of correlator research to be leveraged in the implementation of ART is presented. The implementation takes advantage of the fact that one ART-based architecture, known as ART1, can be broken into several parts, some of which are better to implement in parallel. The control structure of ART, often regarded as its most complex part, is actually not very time consuming and can be done in electronics. The bottom-up and top-down gated pathways, however, are …

EMAP-2, a 3-D finite element modeling code that can be used to model simple printed circuit board configurations, is discussed. It is a true full-wave field solver designed to be used for education or research. EMAP-2 is written in the C programming language. The code, its capabilities, and its limitations are described. Two examples illustrate how the code can be applied to problems of particular interest to EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) engineers.

A Study Of Fatigue Failure In Superalloys Using Positron Annihilation, D. Hoeckelman, Hollis P. Leighly Jan 1993

A Study Of Fatigue Failure In Superalloys Using Positron Annihilation, D. Hoeckelman, Hollis P. Leighly

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study shows there are significant changes occurring in the open volume defect concentration during fatigue cycling as measured by the S parameter. These changes are dependent upon the stress ratio, R = σmin/σmax, the maximum stress, σmax, and the number of fatigue cycles. The decline in the S parameter is due to the elimination of the residual vacancies. This decline is followed by an increase due to the generation of dislocations and the formation of small microcracks. This is followed by a decline in the S parameter due to growth of the microcracks ultimately leading to failure. Copyright © …

Electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermogravimetric behavior of compositions in the systems Y1-yCayMnO3 and Y1-yCayMnO3 were studied as functions of temperature and ambient oxygen activity in order to determine the mechanism of electrical transport and defect structure. Compositions in Y1-yCayMnO3 exhibited very slight oxygen activity-dependent behavior as the ambient oxygen activity was reduced. A defect model which includes the thermally excited disproportionation of Mn3+ into Mn2+ and Mn4+ pairs was applied to the oxygen-activity-dependent data for La0.80Ca0.20MnO3 …

(CeO2)0.8(CSO) has been suggested for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) applications, because of its higher electrical conductivity and chemical stability, compared to other ceria-based materials. However, CSO is difficult to densify under conditions compatible with other SOFC components. A thin film synthesis technique has been developed for the fabrication of dense CSO films from precursor solutions at relatively low temperatures. Dense, smooth, and homogeneous films were obtained on Pt, single-crystal Si, and La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3 (LSCF) substrates by spin-coating a polymeric precursor and subsequent heat-treatment. Crystallization of the film …

The low-cycle and high-cycle fatigue behavior and cyclic response of naturally aged and artificially aged 2219/TiC/15p and unreinforced 2219 Al were investigated utilizing plastic strain-controlled and stress-controlled testing. The cyclic response of both the reinforced and un-reinforced materials was similar for all plastic strain amplitudes tested except that the saturation stress level for the composite was always greater than that of the unreinforced material. The cyclic response of the naturally aged materials exhibited cyclic hardening and, in some cases, cyclic softening, while the cyclic response for the artificially aged materials showed no evidence of either cyclic hardening or softening. The …

Robust Control Of Flexible Structures Using Multiple Shape Memory Alloy Actuators, R. Lashlee, R. Butler, Vittal S. Rao, F. Kern

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The design and implementation of control strategies for large, flexible smart structures presents challenging problems. To demonstrate the capabilities of shape-memory-alloy actuators, we have designed and fabricated a three-mass test article with multiple shape-memory-alloy (NiTiNOL) actuators. The force and moment actuators were implemented on the structure to examine the effects of control structure interaction and to increase actuation force. These SMA actuators exhibit nonlinear effects due to dead band and saturation. The first step in the modeling process was the experimental determination of the transfer function matrix derived from frequency response data. A minimal state space representation was determined based …

Lightning Arrester Failure And Ferroresonance On A Distribution System, L. J. Bohmann, J. Mcdaniel, Eldon Keith Stanek

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Since 1987 the Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) has been experiencing a large number of lightning arrester failures on a portion of their distribution system in southern Marquette County, Michigan. It was in the area of the Navy's Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) antenna where the distribution system had been recently reconfigured so that the transformers were connected line-to-line in order to eliminate interference from the antenna. A study was done which determined that the system was susceptible to ferro resonance during single line faults under lightly loaded conditions and that the overvoltage's experienced could be causing the lightning arrester failures. …

Analog Chips And Intelligent Vehicles, J. G. Harris Jan 1993

Analog Chips And Intelligent Vehicles, J. G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Numerous digital-based sensor systems have been demonstrated on intelligent vehicles but only the most rudimentary experiments have been attempted with analog VLSI chips in real-world environments. The most significant factor in the choice between analog and digital approaches to sensory processing in intelligent vehicles will be the cost of mass production. If analog sensors can be designed with enough speed, resolution and accuracy to solve sensory processing tasks, then the low-cost of mass production ensures that analog circuits will be the technology of choice for future generations of smart sensors. Current analog VLSI sensors do not have enough resolution and …

Computer Simulation Of Three-Dimensional Mechanical Assemblies: Part Ii - Computer Simulation, T. C. Chou, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Computer simulation of the kinematic and dynamic behaviors of mechanical assemblies has become a very important tool in design and manufacturing, because the designer can foresee how a product is going to perform before the product is actually fabricated. However, up to now, the most current simulation modules are based on analysis from another kinematic or dynamic module by specifying the mating conditions between components, and then displaying the motion on the screen. This computer simulation actually performs similarly to a movie and can only provide visual checking. The drawback of this simulation approach is that designers are forced to …

On The Use Of Levy's Method For Symmetrically Laminated Composite Plates, Serge Abrate Jan 1993

On The Use Of Levy's Method For Symmetrically Laminated Composite Plates, Serge Abrate

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

For rectangular plates with two opposite edges simply supported and no bending twisting coupling, Levy's method can yield exact solutions for static deflections, free vibrations and buckling loads. However, three distinct solutions are obtained, depending on the relative magnitude of the plate rigidities, which in turn are functions of material properties, laminate thickness and lay-up. In this communication a stiffness invariant formulation is used to identify those laminates which fall under the three cases defined. © 1993.

Observations On Higher-Order Beam Theory, A. Bhimaraddi, K. Chandrashekhara Jan 1993

Observations On Higher-Order Beam Theory, A. Bhimaraddi, K. Chandrashekhara

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A parabolic shear-deformation beam theory assuming a higher-order variation for axial displacement has been recently presented. In this theory, the axial displacement variation can be selected so that it results in a suitable admissible transverse shear-strain variation across the depth of the beam. This paper examines several transverse shear-strain variations that can go with the aforementioned higher-order theory. Apart from the usual simple parabolic variation, six other shear-strain variations are considered: the sinusoidal variation, cubic, quartic, quintic, and sixth-order polynomials. All these variations for transverse shear-strain satisfy the requirement that the shear strain be zero at the extreme fibers (z …

Efficient Simulation Of Multicarrier Digital Communication Systems In Nonlinear Channel Environments, Kevin W. Schneider, William H. Tranter Jan 1993

Efficient Simulation Of Multicarrier Digital Communication Systems In Nonlinear Channel Environments, Kevin W. Schneider, William H. Tranter

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effectiveness of computer simulation as a tool for the design and analysis of communication systems is often limited by the long execution times required for many simulations. When simulating multicarrier digital communication systems operating over nonlinear channels, the required high sampling rate contributes significantly to long execution times. A new method that reduces the sampling rate of simulations of such systems is developed. This Partial Sum of Products (ParSOP) method reduces the sampling rate by generating only the intermodulation products that lie in a frequency band of interest. The ParSOP method requires that the bandpass nonlinearity be represented by …

Simplified Strength Prediction For Cold-Formed C- And Z-Shapes, Roger A. Laboube Jan 1993

Simplified Strength Prediction For Cold-Formed C- And Z-Shapes, Roger A. Laboube

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although cold-formed steel C- and Z-shaped members possess a very favorable strength-to-weight ratio, are easily fabricated and erected, and offer a cost-effective structural design solution, they can be highly susceptible to local buckling. To adequately address the impact of the local buckling limit state, a complex, time-consuming design office effort may be required. Therefore, to facilitate the design of such shapes, a study was conducted that focused on developing relatively simple, easy-to-apply design guidelines. The design guidelines address the behavior of cold-formed steel C- and Z-shaped members when used as either a flexural member or a compression member. Both edge-stiffened …
