Adversarial Transferability And Generalization In Robust Deep Learning, Tao Wu
Adversarial Transferability And Generalization In Robust Deep Learning, Tao Wu
Doctoral Dissertations
Despite its remarkable achievements across a multitude of benchmark tasks, deep learning (DL) models exhibit significant fragility to adversarial examples, i.e., subtle modifications applied to inputs during testing yet effective in misleading DL models. These meticulously crafted perturbations possess the remarkable property of transferability: an adversarial example that effectively fools one model often retains its effectiveness against another model, even if the two models were trained independently. This research delves into the characteristics influencing the transferability of adversarial examples from three distinct and complementary perspectives: data, model, and optimization. Firstly, from the data perspective, we propose a new method of …

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Strategies For Inverter Dominated Microgrids, Oroghene Oboreh-Snapps
Doctoral Dissertations
The integration of inverter-based distributed generators (IBDGs) in modern power systems has ushered in a new era of renewable energy utilization, prompting the rise of Microgrid (MG) architectures. Nevertheless, as IBDG penetration increases, a host of challenges surface. Foremost among these challenges are issues related to frequency stability stemming from the inherent lack of inertia in IBDGs, and inaccurate sharing of reactive and active power, particularly evident in parallel IBDG networks with mismatched feeder impedance. This research presents novel solutions to these challenges by adopting deep reinforcement learning (DRL), specifically, the twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) algorithm, to …

Optimizing The Total Life Cycle Of Li-Ion Batteries: From Constant Gradient Charging To Aged Cell Performance Restoration, Kasim Adesegun Adewuyi
Doctoral Dissertations
As demand for Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs) have skyrocketed over the past decade, the need for better charging methodologies and recycling methods have become vitally important. At a fundamental level, this dissertation strives to fulfill the green promise of a future without fossil fuels. In order to promote a transition away from fossil fuels, LIBs for vehicles require ultrafast charging times equivalent to a normal vehicle (6 mins). However, this process leads to high volume expansion for next generation electrode materials which causes degradation. Without limiting this factor, the environmental impact shifts from oil rigs to Li mines and landfills. The …

Investigating Detonation Parameters Through The Plate Dent Test: A Novel Approach For Characterizing Detonation Curvature And Thickness, Emily Michelle Johnson
Doctoral Dissertations
Detonation is the driving factor behind how an explosive, used in an array of applications, performs. Understanding and measuring detonation parameters of an explosive is key in explosive charge design and application. Currently, determining parameters is costly as the instrumentation needed is expensive in terms of price, maintenance, and personnel. This research examines two methods of determining detonation parameters through measurement of secondary material response to the detonation wave in an effort to provide an alternate, simple, and inexpensive method of measurement. The first of these studies focuses on the Gurney Model and demonstrates that the model's accuracy was diminished …

A mold simulator was developed to replicate the mold oscillation and casting speed conditions of a continuous caster on the lab scale. A mold was designed incorporating fiber optics to capture internal temperature gradients and transient heat transfer phenomena during the initial solidification of steel. Casting parameters (casting speed, oscillation stroke and oscillation frequency) were investigated using the mold simulator. Solidified steel shells and mold thermal data were collected and characterized after initial solidification to investigate the impacts of mold oscillation on shell growth and mold heat transfer.

This study demonstrates the use of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors for distributed temperature and strain monitoring in steelmaking and foundry applications. Integrated into inexpensive optical fibers, FBGs offer accurate and real-time remote sensing, detecting shifts in wavelength due to temperature (up to 1,800 °C), strain, or structural wear and tear. Furthermore, the intrinsic features of FBG sensors: compact size, immunity to electromagnetic interference and corrosion, robustness to vibration, ease of integration into existing composite structures, and non-intrusive measurement capacity in harsh environments make them ideal for steelmaking. FBGs optimize production, ensure quality, and enhance safety within the steel industry.

A pin style bottom anode employs conductive steel rods that serve as the pathway for the high electrical power through rammed refractory at the bottom of a DC Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). Anode wear during operation is important to monitor, as anode replacement is expensive and impacts EAF productivity. Liquid steel penetration into the un-sintered refractory layer can result from rapid electrical power ramp-up, dips in furnace temperature, or operating the anode for too long between EAF campaigns. In extreme cases, the liquid steel may penetrate the bottom of the furnace when anode wear progresses too close to the bottom …

Near-field scanning has become a widely used tool for diagnosing electromagnetic compatibility and electromagnetic interference issues. However, the transient signal of the device under test often contains multiple frequency bands and exhibits nonstationarity, which poses a challenge for near-field scanning analysis. To address this issue, this article presents a method for analyzing time-resolved near-field radiation based on multiresolution dynamic mode decomposition (MRDMD). The MRDMD approach recursively and hierarchically applies the traditional dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) method. The distribution of DMD eigenvalues determines the slow and fast modes in each level's decomposition, where the slow modes are preserved, and the fast …
