High clock frequencies and short-edge rates in present high-speed digital systems result in EMI problems at increasingly higher frequencies. At these speeds, clock harmonics have sufficient energy in the range above 500 MHz to excite cavity modes of a conducting enclosure, and to drive even small length slots and apertures that are unavoidable in a practical design, and can result in an EMI problem. One approach to mitigate these problems is to partition the enclosure into several smaller internal shielded compartments. To study the factors which affect this partitioning, a special enclosure that can be divided into two internal compartments …

Investigation Of Split Groundplanes At The Connector For Emi Control, David M. Hockanson, James L. Drewniak, Joe Nuebel, James C. Parker Jr.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
EMI can often be reduced by selectively filtering various parts of a given system. One common method employed by designers is to split the groundplane near the chassis and route I/O lines over the split. The rationale is based on providing a large series impedance to common-mode currents on the I/O lines. In this manner, PCB designers hope to lower the level of noise currents contributing to radiation. This work studies the efficacy of the groundplane split as a deterrent for EMI associated with I/O lines being driven against other extended reference structures. A test-board was developed to analyze the …

Experimental data from a chromatographic system involving the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) onto porous anion-exchange adsorbent particles packed in a column are presented. The parameters that characterize the mass transfer mechanisms of intraparticle diffusion and convection are estimated by fitting the predictions of dynamic mathematical models describing adsorption in column systems having spherical perfusive and purely diffusive adsorbent Particles to the experimental breakthrough data obtained from the column adsorption system. Both linear and nonlinear expressions for the equilibrium isotherm are considered. The values of the transport parameters are estimated in the time domain for the nonlinear adsorption models …

The ability of microorganisms to selectively adsorb various heavy metal ions has been recognized for over a decade. We have investigated the biosorption of lead by an active culture of the cyanobacterium Anabaena cylindrica. Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis was used to evaluate the different uptake mechanisms in the various subcellular regions. Three were identified; a very fast adsorption mechanism in the cell envelope; a time- dependent deposition reaction on the cell surface; and an adsorption mechanism, also time dependent, on the polyphosphate body inside the cell. Atomic absorption spectrometry was then used to quantify the changes with time of bulk …

To some people engineering management (EM) is a specialty within Industrial Engineering (IE), to others EM is broader than IE. Comparing the histories of the two disciplines shows a clear distinction. Both disciplines have their roots in the work of engineering pioneers at the turn of the century. Work in motion and time study, along with other efficiency driven techniques, was the beginning of IE. Both IE and EM can trace their roots to the era of scientific management and the work of the early pioneers. A noted change for IE occurred after World War II when many programs shifted …

This Fourth Progress Report presents the results of 56 connection tests conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla during February-April, 1997. The intent of this limited test program was to gain an understanding of the general behavior characteristics of connections in grade 80 steels. No attempt was made to develop an indepth understanding of the connection behavior, which would be necessary to propose complete or comprehensive design recommendations. The performance and behavior of screw and welded connections in low-ductility steel were studied by testing to failure 36 specimens using self-drilling screws, 16 welded connections using either transverse or longitudinal fillet welds, …

Behavior Of Web Elements With Openings Subjected To Linearly Varying Shear, Matthew R. Eiler, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
PREFACE An experimental investigation of the shear buckling limit state was conducted on single web, cold-formed steel flexural members with web openings. The purpose of the investigation was to develop a better understanding of the behavior of web elements having a web opening, and to propose appropriate design recommendations based on the observed behavior. The present AlSI ASD and LRFD specifications do not contain design provisions for webs with openings, thus the findings of this study will aid in enhancing the shear design provisions. The test specimens, constructed from C-sections, were subjected to linearly varying shear resulting from the application …

In this paper, the use of Intel's Electronically Trainable Analog Neural Network (ETANN) chipi80170NX for implementing single-chip robust controllers for smart structures is successfully demonstrated. Robust controllers like the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and linear quadratic Gaussian with loop transfer recovery (LQG/LTR) are implemented in various configurations using the ETANN chip on the smart structure test article. The test article is a cantilevered plate with PZTs as actuators and shaded PVDF film as sensors. The spatially distributed sensors allow direct measurement of the states of the system enabling the implementation of the LQR controller. A two step connectionist approach is …

Comparison Of Fdtd Algorithms For Subcellular Modeling Of Slots In Shielding Enclosures, Kuang-Ping Ma, Min Li, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Subcellular modeling of thin slots in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is investigated. Two subcellular algorithms for modeling thin slots with the FDTD method are compared for application to shielding end osures in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). The stability of the algorithms is investigated, and comparisons between the two methods for slots in planes, and slots in loaded cavities are made. Results for scattering from a finite-length slot in an infinite plane employing one of the algorithms are shown to agree well with published experimental results, and power delivered to an enclosure with a slot agree well with results measured for …

Mechanism Of Anomalous Photoinduced Transient Current Peak In Amorphous Silicon Thin-Film Transistor, M. H. Chu, Cheng-Hsiao Wu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The photoinduced transient current from an amorphous silicon thin-film transistor is computed and the mechanism described in terms of trap-state filling dynamics. The direction of the current flow and the location of the transient peak depends strongly on the distributions of donorlike and acceptorlike trap states in the neighborhood of the dark Fermi level. We show that the transient current can flow in the same direction as in the crystalline transistor, as well as in the opposite direction. There is also an interesting cross-over behavior in which the transient current flows out of the drain terminal as a pulse of …

A Robust Unit Commitment Algorithm For Hydro-Thermal Optimization, Chao-An Li, Chung-Li Tseng, E. Hsu, R. B. Johnson, A. J. Svoboda
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a unit commitment algorithm which combines the Lagrangian relaxation (LR), sequential unit commitment (SUC), and optimal unit decommitment (UD) methods to solve a general hydro-thermal optimization (HTO) problem. The authors argue that this approach retains the advantages of the LR method while addressing the method''s observed weaknesses to improve overall algorithm performance and quality of solution. The proposed approach has been implemented in a version of PG&E''s HTO program, and test results are presented.

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The results of a study of the structure and electrical properties of SrCe0.95Yb0.05O3 thin film protonic conductors are presented. Dense SrCe0.95Yb0.05O3 thin films (∼1000 nm) with grain size in the 30-70 nm range were obtained on Si- and Al2O3-substrates using a polymeric precursor spin coating technique. The electrical conductivity of these thin films has been studied as a function of temperature and correlated with the microstructure. The thin films showed higher electrical conductivity than dense sintered polycrystalline SrCe0.95Yb0.05O3 specimens which had grain size in the micrometer range. This electrical conductivity enhancement has been attributed to the influence of interfacial grain …

Neutron scattering techniques are used to study the magnetic excitations of the Er ions in superconducting ErBa2Cu3O7, a system where the Er ions order antiferromagnetically at TN=0.62 K and the sublattice magnetization obeys the relation for a 2D S=1/2 Ising model. Our data, which were taken on a cold neutron triple axis spectrometer using a horizontally focusing analyzer, reveal that there is a large gap of about 0.20 meV in the excitation spectrum, about four times the thermal energy kTN, as expected for an Ising system. However, we also observe …

Electromagnetic properties of a system formed by an open-ended rectangular waveguide and a surface crack/slot in a metallic specimen are described in this paper. Scanning a crack on a metal surface changes the reflection coefficient of the incident dominant mode. A model as a function of relative crack location within the waveguide aperture (i.e., crack moving with respect to the waveguide aperture) is desired to describe and optimize practical crack detection applications. Hence, the change in the reflection coefficient for a generalized system encompassing empty, filled, and finite cracks located at an arbitrary position inside the waveguide aperture, is evaluated. …

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)
AlSI sponsored research at Santa Clara University (Serrette, 1996) led to the development of shear values for plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), and gypswn wallboard (GWB) sheathed light weight steel framed wall assemblies. The scope of the 1996 work was, however, limited to plywood, OSB. and GWB on 0.033 in. (20 gauge) framing. To provide a wider range of design options and clarify some of the values from the 1996 test program. a new test program was initialed. The new program included the following wall assemblies: flat strap X-braced walls. steel sheathed walls, high aspect ratio walls, and walls framed …

Estimation Of Pore Diameter For Intraparticle Fluid Flow In Hidisperse Porous Chromatographic Particles, G. A. Heeter, Athanasios I. Liapis
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A quantitative method is developed and presented for estimating the mean pore diameter, d(pore), that could allow intraparticle fluid flow in the macroporous region of adsorbent particles with a bidisperse porous structure packed in a column. The method is used to estimate the value of d(pore) that is required to obtain specified values of the fraction, F, of the column superficial fluid velocity that is flowing through the macroporous region of the adsorbent particles and the value of d(pore) that is required to obtain specified values of the intraparticle Peclet number, Pe(intra).

A novel mathematical method for parameter estimation is proposed and used to estimate in the Laplace transform domain the values of the parameters that characterize the mechanisms of intraparticle diffusion and convection in spherical perfusive or purely diffusive adsorbent particles with a monodisperse or with a bidisperse porous structure when the adsorbent particles are packed in a column. The parameter estimation method in the Laplace transform domain presented in this work is significantly simpler, easier to use and dramatically faster than the conventional parameter estimation procedure in the time domain, which requires the repeated numerical solution of the partial differential …

INTRODUCTION It has been known for years that mechanical properties of thin sheet steels, such as yield strength, tensile strength, and ductility, are affected by aging (Chajes et al. 1963, Hertzberg 1989, Yu 1991). The aging effect on mechanical properties can be described as follows. For a virgin steel that is initially loaded in tension beyond its yield strength and into strain hardening state and then unloaded to zero stress, the yield and tensile strengths of the steel increase while the ductility of the steel decreases if the steel is reloaded in tension again after a period of time from …
