A study of glasses from the ternary system CaF2-CaAl2Si2O8-P2O5 has been carried out. It has been shown that glasses with low phosphorus contents and high fluorite contents crystallise to fluorite. Fluorine reduces the glass transition temperature and is also required for the formation of fluorapatite (FAP). In the absence of fluorine in the glass no apatite phase is formed. Bulk nucleation of FAP is favoured for glasses with Ca:P ratios close to the apatite stoichiometry of 1.67 and with low crosslink densities. Thermal gravimetric analysis showed significant weight losses …

This paper gives a brief description of the laser aided manufacturing process. Empirical models describing the process dynamics of the laser aided metal deposition process is developed based on some of the models found in the literature. These models provide the basis for process planning and real time control. An embedded vision system, a two color temperature sensor, and a laser displacement sensor are incorporated for real time monitoring and control of the deposition process. The temperature profile of the surface and geometric characteristics of the melt pool are studied to ensure consistent operation of the process.

Multi-axis Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (LAMP) is an additive manufacturing process similar to laser cladding. This process can produce full functional parts [1]. Traditional Layered Manufacturing processes produce parts with limited surface quality; and also the build time is often long due to the deposition of sacrificial support structure. The multiple degrees of freedom endow the LAMP system a capability to build parts without support structure. An algorithm for adaptive slicing based on skeleton is presented in this paper. The skeleton is useful for many applications such as feature recognition, robot path planning, shape analysis, and etc [2]. The near …

This paper focuses on differential signal transmission above ground planes with gaps, taking into account the dielectric and conductive losses of the substrate. An equivalent lumped-circuit is proposed and its suitability is investigated by comparing the obtained numerical results with the measured data. Furthermore the differential to common mode conversion of the waves, while crossing the gap, is theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified.

Electrochemical Characterization Of The Effects Of Impurities And Organic Additives In Lead Electrowinning From Fluoborate Electrolyte, Puqiang Zhang, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Pu Yu
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The effects of glue and calcium lignin sulfonate additives, and chloride and antimony impurities on the lead electrowinning process, using a fluoborate electrolyte, were studied. Short-term deposition tests, voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and SEM techniques were used for the evaluation. The interactions among additives and impurities were also evaluated. The presence of antimony or chloride ion in the range of 50 to 200 mg/L was shown to cause a more dendritic and powdery lead deposit. Additions of glue and calcium lignin sulfonate at selected concentrations helped to level the deposit and counteracted the detrimental effects of chloride and antimony. …

Grounding Of Heatpipe/Heatspreader And Heatsink Structures For Emi Mitigation, Chen Wang, James L. Drewniak, D. Wang, Ray Alexander, James L. Knighten, David M. Hockanson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
EMI problems caused by the presence of heatpipe/heatspreader and heatsink structures in a high-speed design are well known in engineering practice. High-frequency noise can be coupled from IC packages to an electrically conductive heatsink or heatspreader attached to the IC, which then is radiated, or the energy coupled to an enclosure cavity mode. This EMI coupling path was modeled with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, and a mitigation approach was investigated. Good agreement between measurements and FDTD modeling is demonstrated, indicating FDTD is a suitable tool for analysis and design. Then, several grounding schemes suitable for a heatsink or heatspreader …

Representation Of Gyromagnetic Composite Media For Fdtd Modeling, Marina Koledintseva, James L. Drewniak, Xiaoning Ye
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A composite media containing particles with a high internal field of magnetic anisotropy (hexagonal ferrites) useful for numerous EMC applications in a wide frequency band is considered. Effective constitutive parameters of a high-loss composite gyromagnetic media are represented in the Lorentzian form. It is convenient for the numerical analysis using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm with a recursive convolution procedure. The equations for the electric and magnetic field updating in such media are represented.

Specific design criteria are proposed to mitigate radiated emissions from a resonant enclosure excited by a heat sink acting as a microstrip patch antenna source. In this particular application, the EMI mechanism is assumed to be due to coupling from the dominant TMz010 mode to one or more resonant modes associated with the enclosure dimensions. The enclosure is then presumed to radiate, at the enclosure resonance frequencies, through one or more apertures, slots, or seams. The EMI-reduction strategy consists of shifting the resonant frequency of the dominant-patch antenna mode by dielectrically loading the patch antenna with thermal-gasket material …

Design Of A Hypersonic Waterjet Apparatus Driven By High Explosives, B. L. Weeks, J. Klosterman, Paul Nicholas Worsey
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The design and construction of a hypersonic waterjet apparatus is described. Jet velocities from 0.5 to 5 km/s have been achieved using a high explosive charge. Images are obtained in situ on various target substrates using a high-speed framing camera. Experimental results are shown for the impact of high velocity waterjets on propellants and high explosive samples. By observing the impact of the waterjet at a wide range of velocities a safety threshold can be determined where no reaction takes place.

A relatively simple, closed-form expression has been developed to estimate the EMI from shielding enclosures due to coupling from interior sources through slots and apertures at the enclosure cavity modes. A power-balance method, Bethe's (1944) small-hole theory, and empirically developed formulas for the relation between radiation, and slot length and number of slots, were employed to estimate an upper bound on the radiated EMI from shielding enclosures. Comparisons between measurements and estimated field strengths suitably agree within engineering accuracy.

Investigation Of Pcb Layout Parasitics In Emi Filtering Of I/O Lines, Xiaoning Ye, Geping Liu, James L. Drewniak
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
EMI filters are often utilized on I/O lines to reduce high-frequency noise from being conducted or coupled off the PCB and resulting in an EMI problem. However, layout parasitics are usually inevitable in practical circuit design, and the filtering performance may vary. In this study, the impact of the board layout on the filtering performance is investigated by |S21| measurements of sample PCB boards with different filter layouts. The finite-difference time-domain method is applied to model the boards, support the experimental work, and can be used to provide a means for conducting "what-if" engineering studies.

Circuit board mounted, shunt capacitive filters are less effective at high frequencies because of the mutual inductance (M) that exists between the input and output ports. An approximate expression for the mutual inductance is M=(μh/2π)ln(h/a); where h=via length and a=radius of the via connecting the capacitor to the return plane. The reduced mutual inductance associated with the new, three-terminal, surface-mounted capacitor results in more than 15 dB increased attenuation compared to two-terminal capacitors over the 0.3-6.0 GHz range with 50 Ω source and load terminations

Including Smt Ferrite Beads In Dc Power Bus And High-Speed I/O Line Modeling, Jun Fan, Shaofeng Luan, James L. Drewniak
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Surface mount technology (SMT) ferrite beads are often used in high-speed digital circuit designs to mitigate noise. The common modeling approach is to include SMT ferrite beads as equivalent lumped LCR circuits. The work presented in this paper included SMT ferrite beads as a frequency-dependent impedance in a PEEC-like modeling tool denoted CEMPIE, a circuit extraction approach based on a mixed-potential integral equation formulation. Agreement with measurements demonstrates the approach. The applications shown are segmentation of power areas for noise isolation, and I/O line filtering.

This paper investigates the power bus noise and power bus impedance of printed circuit boards with four different kinds of embedded capacitance. These boards have power-ground plane pairs separated by a very thin layer of material with high dielectric permittivity. It is shown that embedded capacitance effectively reduces power bus noise over the entire frequency range evaluated (up to 5 GHz).

The biotransformation of four different classes of aromatic compounds by the Escherichia coli strain DH5α(pTCB 144), which contained the chlorobenzene dioxygenase (CDO) from Pseudomonas sp. strain P51, was examined. CDO oxidized biphenyl as well as monochlorobiphenyls to the corresponding cis-2,3-dihydro-2,3-dihydroxy derivatives, whereby oxidation occurred on the unsubstituted ring. No higher substituted biphenyls were oxidized. The absolute configurations of several monosubstituted cis-benzene dihydrodiols formed by CDO were determined. All had an S configuration at the carbon atom in meta position to the substituent on the benzene nucleus. with one exception, the enantiomeric excess of several 1,4-disubstituted cis-benzene dihydrodiols formed by CDO …

Segmented power planes are often used for DC power bus noise isolation in multi-layered printed circuit board (PCB) designs. To achieve a desirable noise isolation, different power plane segmentations can be used. A suitable modeling approach, as well as measurements, were employed to study the power bus isolation with several power plane segmentation configurations. The studied geometries included power island designs connected with a conducting bridge, a ferrite bead, and a π-filter. In addition, different conducting bridge widths and power island gap widths were analyzed, and compared. The modeled and measured results show that power plane segmentations with proper designs …

Modeling The Ultraviolet Photodegradation Of Rigid Polyurethane Foams, C. R. Newman, Daniel Forciniti
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Before the Montreal Protocol of 1987 and the subsequent phasing-out of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in industrial applications, rigid polymer foams were made using these compounds as secondary blowing agents. The CFCs remain trapped in the gaseous part of the cellular foam structure, and once discarded these foams constitute a significant reservoir for the environmental release of ozone-depleting chemicals. Environmental degradation of the foam accelerates this process. Of particular interest in this work is the degradative effect of ultraviolet (UV) light on rigid polyurethane foams. Foams were subjected to accelerated weathering conditions and then viewed with a scanning electron microscope. The thin …

In recent years near-field microwave nondestructive testing and evaluation techniques have shown great promise for evaluating different properties of cement-based structures. An important issue regarding the inspection of these structures is the ability to determine the presence and evaluate the content of chloride in them. Chlorides can be introduced in these structures in many different ways including when salts are present in their mixing water. Consequently, for this investigation, two sets of 8" × 8" × 8" (203mm) cubic mortar specimens were prepared each with a water-to-cement (w/c) ratio of 0.5 and 0.6, respectively, and both sets with sand-to-cement ratios …

Automated Giemsa-banded chromosome image research has been largely restricted to classification schemes associated with isolated chromosomes within metaphase spreads. In normal human metaphase spreads, there are 46 chromosomes occurring in homologous pairs for the autosomal classes 1-22 and the X chromosome for females. Many genetic abnormalities are directly linked to structural and/or numerical aberrations of chromosomes within metaphase spreads. Cells with the Philadelphia chromosome contain an abnormal chromosome for class 9 and for class 22, leaving a single normal chromosome for each class. A data-driven homologue matching technique is applied to recognizing normal chromosomes from classes 9 and 22. Homologue …

The recruitment and the retention of female undergraduate and graduate students into engineering courses is discussed. A similar challenge lies in recruiting female faculty member from the limited pool of candidates in several fields at most universities. It is found that about half the females who were hired did not stay at the university. It is suggested that programs should be introduced to encourage mentoring and career development as such improvements would benefit all faculty members both female and male.

InGaAsNSb/GaAs quantum wells (QWs) were grown by solid-source molecular-beam epitaxy using a N2 radio frequency plasma source. The effect of adding Sb during growth of InGaAsN/GaAs QWs was studied. X-ray diffraction, reflection high-energy electron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies indicate that Sb suppresses the three-dimensional growth and improves the interface of the QWs. X-ray diffraction and secondary ion mass spectroscopy analysis show that Sb gets incorporated into the quantum well, which becomes a quinternary compound that was previously unexplored. The introduction of Sb during growth of InGaAsN/GaAs QWs significantly enhances the optical properties of the QWs. 1.53 /spl …
