Experimental Verification Of Near-Wall Hindered Diffusion Theory For The Brownian Motion Of Nanoparticles Using Evanescent Wave Microscopy, Kenneth D. Kihm, Arindam Banerjee
Experimental Verification Of Near-Wall Hindered Diffusion Theory For The Brownian Motion Of Nanoparticles Using Evanescent Wave Microscopy, Kenneth D. Kihm, Arindam Banerjee
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy technique coupled with three-dimensional tracking of nanoparticles is used to experimentally verify the theory on near-wall hindered Brownian motion [Goldman et al., Chem. Eng. Sci. 22, 637 (1967); Brenner, Chem. Eng. Sci. 16, 242 (1967)] very close to the solid surface (within ~1 µm). The measured mean square displacements (MSDs) in the lateral x-y directions show good agreement with the theory for all tested nanoparticles of radii 50, 100, 250, and 500 nm. However, the measured MSDs in the z direction deviate substantially from the theory particularly for the case of smaller particles of …
Hierarchical Optimal Force-Position Control Of A Turning Process, B. Pandurangan, Robert G. Landers, S. N. Balakrishnan
Hierarchical Optimal Force-Position Control Of A Turning Process, B. Pandurangan, Robert G. Landers, S. N. Balakrishnan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Machining process control technologies are currently not well integrated into machine tool controllers and, thus, servomechanism dynamics are often ignored when designing and implementing process controllers. In this brief, a hierarchical controller is developed that simultaneously regulates the servomechanism motions and cutting forces in a turning operation. The force process and servomechanism system are separated into high and low levels, respectively, in the hierarchy. The high-level goal is to maintain a constant cutting force to maximize productivity while not violating a spindle power constraint. This goal is systematically propagated to the lower level and combined with the low-level goal to …

Modular Control Laboratory System With Integrated Simulation, Animation, Emulation, And Experimental Components, J. Liu, Robert G. Landers
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A typical sequence for the design of a controller, given the desired objectives, is the following: system modeling, design and mathematical analysis, simulation studies, emulation, and experimental implementation. Most control courses thoroughly cover design and mathematical analysis and utilize a simulation or experimental project at the end of the course. However, animation and emulation are seldom utilized and projects rarely cover the entire controller design sequence. This paper presents a control laboratory system developed at the University of Missouri at Rolla that integrates simulation, animation, emulation, and experimental components. The laboratory system may be applied to a wide variety of …

Multiple spacecraft formation control about the L2 libration point is investigated in this paper. the circular restricted three-body problem with Sun and Earth as the two primaries is utilized as a framework of study. the idea of virtual structure is considered as the architecture of multiple spacecraft formation. the center of the virtual rigid body follows a nominal orbit around the L2 libration point. the individual spacecraft is controlled so as to keep a constant relative distance from the center of the virtual structure. a nonlinear model is developed that describes the relative formation dynamics. This nonlinear control problem was …
A Methodology For Model Selection In Engineering Design, Rajesh Radhakrishnan, Daniel A. Mcadams
A Methodology For Model Selection In Engineering Design, Rajesh Radhakrishnan, Daniel A. Mcadams
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Engineering design consists of a series of stages during which a number of decisions need to be made by the designer. Since the information available to the designer is limited during initial design stages, to make these decisions and be able to proceed further in the design process, the designer needs to depict the nature, visualize the form, and predict the behavior of the product through the use of aids called models. These models guide these decisions; therefore, the designer needs to ensure the downstream validity of these decisions by constructing models with sufficient accuracy and resolution. Because higher quality …

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A poled lead zirconate titanate Pb(Zr52Ti48)O3 polycrystalline piezoelectric ceramic energy-carrying element of a compact explosive-driven pulsed power generator was depolarized by an explosive shock wave traveling along the polarization vector P0. We show that shock wave compression of a ferroelectric energy-carrying element at pressures of 1.5-3.8 GPa caused almost complete depolarization of the sample. The shock wave velocity in the Pb(Zr52Ti48)O3 was determined to be 3.94 ± 0.27 km/s. The electric charge stored in the ferroelectrics, due to their remnant polarization, is released during a short time interval, and can be transformed into pulsed power. Compact explosive-driven sources of primary …

Comparison Of Non-Uniform Optimal Quantizer Designs For Speech Coding With Adaptive Critics And Particle Swarm, Wenwei Zha, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents the design of a companding non-uniform optimal scalar quantizer for speech coding. The quantizer is designed using two neural networks to perform the nonlinear transformation. These neural networks are used in the front and back ends of a uniform quantizer. Two approaches are presented in this paper namely adaptive critic designs (ACD) and particle swarm optimization (PSO), aiming to maximize the signal to noise ratio (SNR). The comparison of these optimal quantizer designs over bit rate range of 3 to 6 is presented. The perceptual quality of the coding is evaluated by the International Telecommunication Union''s Perceptual …
Special Session - Team Training To Promote Constructive (Not Destructive) Conflict, Ray Luechtefeld, Steve Eugene Watkins
Special Session - Team Training To Promote Constructive (Not Destructive) Conflict, Ray Luechtefeld, Steve Eugene Watkins
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Advancing technology increases the need for engineering students to perform effectively on multidisciplinary teams. While conflict is a normal, and even necessary, component of team dynamics, if not managed effectively it can lead to destructive (rather than constructive) outcomes. An Action Science approach to group and individual effectiveness can help teams handle conflict constructively. This session uses a "Teach the Teacher" approach to give participants a basic understanding of skills underlying the approach. It provides practice in Action Science through a set of learning modules. These skills can be brought back and integrated into the participants' courses to provide student …

Anisotropic Diffusion Of N-Butane And N-Decane On A Stepped Surface, Shrijay Subramaniyan, Jee-Ching Wang
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The diffusion of single n-butane and n-decane molecules on a model stepped surface, Pt(655), and on a corresponding flat surface, Pt(111), is investigated using molecular-dynamics simulations and anisotropic united atom model. The surface step on Pt(655) causes the alkane molecules to adsorb on the lower terrace in all-trans conformations with their long molecular axes adjacent and parallel to the step edge, and to diffuse anisotropically along the surface step via a constant wiggly motion without rotation or marked deviation from the parallel adsorption configuration. At relatively high temperatures, the alkane molecules can temporarily break away from the step edge but …
Measurement And Prediction Of Pressure Drop In Pneumatic Conveying: Effect Of Particle Characteristics, Mass Loading, And Reynolds Number, Kimberly H. Henthorn, Kinam Park, Jennifer S. Curtis
Measurement And Prediction Of Pressure Drop In Pneumatic Conveying: Effect Of Particle Characteristics, Mass Loading, And Reynolds Number, Kimberly H. Henthorn, Kinam Park, Jennifer S. Curtis
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper reports the effect of Reynolds number, mass loading, and particle shape and size on pressure drop in a vertical gas-solids pneumatic conveying line. We isolate the effect of one variable while holding all others constant. A commonly used pressure drop correlation and a state-of-the-art multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models are then assessed by comparing their predictions to experimental data. Deficiencies in the models and the correlation are identified, and possible modifications are proposed. The most notable deficiency is the inability of both the experimental correlation and the CFD model to accurately predict the pressure drop for gas-solids …
Wetting Kinetics Of Films Containing Non-Adsorbing Polymers, S. Saritha, Xianzhong Zhang, Partho Neogi
Wetting Kinetics Of Films Containing Non-Adsorbing Polymers, S. Saritha, Xianzhong Zhang, Partho Neogi
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Kinetics of wetting by a polymer solution have been studied theoretically for a film pinned to a slot. The fluid mechanical equations have been solved using a numerical scheme. The role of polymers appears in the disjoining pressure in the model. The spreading kinetics are observed to follow a power law: a power of (1/4) is observed at short times due to the Laplace pressure, and (1/2) at large times under the Hamaker part of the disjoining pressure at very large times and with no equilibration. It is argued and demonstrated that techniques which have low resolutions such as microscopy …

Robust Resource Allocations In Parallel Computing Systems: Model And Heuristics, V. Shestak, Shoukat Ali, Howard Jay Siegel, A. A. Maciejewski
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The resources in parallel computer systems (including heterogeneous clusters) should be allocated to the computational applications in a way that maximizes some system performance measure. However, allocation decisions and associated performance prediction are often based on estimated values of application and system parameters. The actual values of these parameters may differ from the estimates; for example, the estimates may represent only average values, the models used to generate the estimates may have limited accuracy, and there may be changes in the environment. Thus, an important research problem is the development of resource management strategies that can guarantee a particular system …

Suitability Of Pulse Train Control Technique For Bifred Converter, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Ali Emadi, Mark Telefus, Anatoly Shteynberg
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Pulse TrainTM control scheme is presented and applied to a boost integrated flyback rectifier/energy storage dc-dc (BIFRED) converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), which avoids the light-load high-voltage stress problem. In contrast to the conventional control techniques, the principal idea of Pulse Train technique is to regulate the output voltage using a series of high and low energy pulses generated by the current of the inductor. The applicability of the proposed technique to both the input and magnetizing inductances of BIFRED converter is investigated. Analysis of BIFRED converter operating in DCM as well as the output voltage ripple …

Traces In Proximity To Gaps In Return Planes, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Theodore M. Zeeff
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Coupling between circuitry on printed circuit boards can be mitigated by a variety of well-known techniques. One such technique is to isolate circuitry in different areas of the printed circuit board by strategically placing a gap in the signal return plane. However, this technique is only effective at reducing common-impedance coupling, which is generally not a significant coupling mechanism at frequencies above 1 MHz. This paper investigates the effect of a gap located between and parallel to adjacent microstrip traces. The effect of the gap on the mutual inductance and mutual capacitance is evaluated. Laboratory measurements and numerical simulations show …

Using An Lu Recombination Method To Improve The Performance Of The Boundary Element Method At Very Low Frequencies, Haixin Ke, Todd H. Hubing
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Many numerical electromagnetic modeling techniques that work very well at high frequencies do not work well at lower frequencies. This is directly or indirectly due to the weak coupling between the electric and magnetic fields at low frequencies. One technique for improving the performance of boundary element techniques at low frequencies is through the use of loop-tree basis functions, which decouple the contributions from the vector and scalar electric potential. However, loop-tree basis functions can be difficult to define for large, complex geometries. This paper describes a new method for improving the low-frequency performance of boundary element techniques. The proposed …

Multilayer perceptron and radial basis function neural networks have been traditionally used for plant identification in power systems applications of neural networks. While being efficient in tracking the plant dynamics in a relatively small system, their performance degrades as the dimensions of the plant to be identified are increased, for example in supervisory level identification of a multimachine power system for wide area control purposes. Recurrent neural networks can deal with such a problem by modeling the system as a set of differential equations and with less order of complexity. Such a recurrent neural network identifier is designed and implemented …

A Heuristic-Dynamic-Programming-Based Power System Stabilizer For A Turbogenerator In A Single-Machine Power System, Wenxin Liu, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are used to generate supplementary control signals for the excitation system in order to damp the low-frequency power system oscillations. To overcome the drawbacks of a conventional PSS (CPSS), numerous techniques have been proposed in the literature. Based on the analysis of existing techniques, a novel design based on heuristic dynamic programming (HDP) is presented in this paper. HDP, combining the concepts of dynamic programming and reinforcement learning, is used in the design of a nonlinear optimal power system stabilizer. Results show the effectiveness of this new technique. The performance of the HDP-based PSS is compared …

A Measure Of Robustness Against Multiple Kinds Of Perturbations, Shoukat Ali, Behdis Eslamnour
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Parallel and distributed heterogeneous computing systems may operate in an environment that undergoes unpredictable changes causing certain system performance features to degrade. Such systems need robustness to guarantee limited degradation despite fluctuations in the behavior of its component parts or environment. Our previous work in this area presented a method for generating a measure of robustness for a given system. However, the focus of that approach was on a scenario where all perturbations were of the same kind, e.g., all perturbations were in message sizes or computation times, but not both message sizes and computation times. This paper gives an …

The objective of this work is to develop a new microsensor system that can monitor dissolved oxygen and hydration environment at the plant root zone. A miniaturized plant growth system is prepared including the root zone layer, either a porous ceramic tube or porous ceramic wafer on which the plant is grown, and an underlying fluidic channel to deliver nutrients and water to the root zone. We demonstrate the feasibility of using a flexible microsensor array for dissolved oxygen detection, and a four-electrode impedance microelectrode for wetness detection on the surface of a porous tube nutrient delivery system. The unique …

The increasing complexity of the modern power grid highlights the need for advanced modeling and control techniques for effective control of excitation, turbine and flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS). The crucial factors affecting the modern power systems today is voltage and load flow control. Simulation studies in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment and realtime laboratory experimental studies carried out are described and the results show the successful control of the power system elements and the entire power system with adaptive and optimal neurocontrol schemes. Performances of the neurocontrollers are compared with the conventional PI controllers for damping under different operating conditions for …

An Adaptive Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Based Controller For A Static Compensator In A Multimachine Power System, Salman Mohagheghi, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An adaptive Mamdani based fuzzy logic controller has been designed for controlling a static compensator (STATCOM) in a multimachine power system. Such a controller does not need any prior knowledge of the plant to be controlled and can efficiently control a STATCOM during different disturbances in the network. A model free approach using the controller output error is applied for training purposes that adaptively changes the controller output parameters based on a gradient descent method. Moreover, shrinking span membership functions are used for a more stable and accurate control performance. Simulation results show that the proposed controller outperforms the conventional …

Analytical Model For The Rectangular Power-Ground Structure Including Radiation Loss, Ji Chen, Todd H. Hubing, Weimin Shi, R. L. Chen
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An accurate analytical model to predict via coupling within rectangular power-return plane structures is developed. Loss mechanisms, including radiation loss, dielectric loss, and conductor loss, are considered in this model. The radiation loss is incorporated into a complex propagating wavenumber as an artificial loss mechanism. The quality factors associated with three loss mechanisms are calculated and compared. The effects of radiation loss on input impedances and reflection coefficients are investigated for both high-dielectric-loss and low-dielectric-loss printed circuit boards. Measurements are performed to validate the effectiveness of this model.

Backpropagation algorithm is the most commonly used algorithm for training artificial neural networks. While being a straightforward procedure, it suffers from extensive computations, relatively slow convergence speed and possible divergence for certain conditions. The efficiency of this method as the training algorithm of a radial basis function neural network (RBFN) is compared with that of particle swarm optimization, for neural network based identification of a small power system with a static compensator. The comparison of the two methods is based on the convergence speed and robustness of each method.

A New Test Setup And Method For The Calibration Of Current Clamps, David Pommerenke, Ramachandran Chundru, Sunitha Chandra
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Current probes are widely used to measure the common mode currents in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) applications. Often, it is necessary to characterize the ratio of measured voltage to the common mode currents up to gigahertz (GHz) frequencies. Existing calibration methods for current probes suffer from the problem of not directly measuring the current within the current clamp. Instead they either reconstruct the current from measurements at other locations or they use assumptions regarding the geometry which allows them to use a current that is measured at a different location without applying a mathematical correction. For example, by maintaining a 50-Ω …

A Robust Controller For The Manipulation Of Micro Scale Objects, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A suite of novel robust controllers is presented for the manipulation and handling of micro-scale objects in a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) where adhesive, surface tension, friction and van der Waals forces are dominant. Moreover, these forces are typically unknown. The robust controller overcomes the unknown system dynamics and ensures the performance in the presence of actuator constraints by assuming that the upper bounds on these forces are known. On the other hand, for the robust adaptive controller, the unknown forces are estimated online. Using the Lyapunov approach, the uniformly ultimate boundedness (UUB) of the closed-loop manipulation error is shown for …

There is an urgent need for tools to unravel the complex interactions and functionalities of genes. As such, there has been much interest in reverse-engineering genetic regulatory networks from time series gene expression data. We use an artificial neural network to model the dynamics of complicated gene networks and to learn their parameters. The positive and negative regulations of genes are defined by a weight matrix, and different genes are allowed to have different decaying time constants. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method by recreating the SOS DNA Repair network of Escherichia coli bacterium, previously discovered through experimental data.
