Experimental And Modeling Study Of Foam Flow In Pipes With Two Foam-Flow Regimes, Ali Reza Edrisi
Experimental And Modeling Study Of Foam Flow In Pipes With Two Foam-Flow Regimes, Ali Reza Edrisi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The use of foams can be found abundantly in many applications in a wide range of industries, including oil and gas industry. Although understanding foam flow behavior is crucial for the optimization of such applications, the complex flow behavior of foams has been a major challenge. Recent experimental studies with surfactant foams presented a new way to characterize foam flow characteristics by using two flow regimes: the low-quality regime showing either plug-flow or segregated-flow pattern, and the high-quality regime showing slug-flow pattern. This study consists of three main components: (1) experimental investigation of foam rheology in pipes; (2) building up …
Microstructure And Physics-Based Structural Models For Suspended Clay-Exopolymer Flocs, Xiaoling Tan
Microstructure And Physics-Based Structural Models For Suspended Clay-Exopolymer Flocs, Xiaoling Tan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Costal or shoreline waters are often characterized by high concentrations of suspended cohesive sediments (or clay) affected by varied organic matters (mostly extracellular polymeric substances or exopolymers), salt, and hydrodynamic disturbance. Resulting from the flocculation-disaggregation between the colloidal clay and exopolymer, the size and structure changes of the cohesive sediments are of key importance for understanding sediment transport processes (i.e., settling, breakage, and survivability) and the geotechnical and geophysical properties of the bottom bed. Because the coastal environment is extremely complicated, with many unpredictable and uncontrollable parameters, current knowledge is still insufficient to predict or fully explain the behavior of …
Graph Rigidity-Based Formation Control Of Planar Multi-Agent Systems, Xiaoyu Cai
Graph Rigidity-Based Formation Control Of Planar Multi-Agent Systems, Xiaoyu Cai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A multi-agent system is a network of interacting "agents" that collectively perform a complex task. This dissertation is concerned with the decentralized formation control of multi-agent systems moving in the plane. The formation problem is defined as designing control inputs for the agents so that they form and maintain a pre-defined, planar geometric shape. The focus is on three related problems with increasing level of complexity: formation acquisition, formation maneuvering, and target interception. Three different "dynamic" models, also with increasing level of complexity, are considered for the motion of the agents: the single-integrator model, the double-integrator model, and the full …
Molecular Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Interaction Of Amphiphilic Molecules With Lipid Bilayers, Jieqiong Lin
Molecular Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Interaction Of Amphiphilic Molecules With Lipid Bilayers, Jieqiong Lin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the behavior of various amphiphilic molecules in aqueous solutions in the presence of vitamin E or lipid bilayers. Our research studies focus on two molecular systems. First, we investigate the effect of DMSO on structural properties of DMPC bilayers and calculate bilayers permeability coefficients for both water and DMSO molecules at low DMSO concentration. The simulations show that the increase of DMSO concentration in solution leads to an increase of the permeability of water through the bilayers. The permeability increase might explain the unusual ability of DMSO, even at relatively low concentrations, to …
High Capacity Digital Beam Steering Technology, Daniel James Hebert
High Capacity Digital Beam Steering Technology, Daniel James Hebert
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A novel method is described in detail for steering light in many directions without moving mechanical parts. The method involves a combination of liquid crystal cells and polarizing beam splitters. The polarization at each beam splitter is controlled by applying a signal to its corresponding liquid crystal cell. A study of light steering techniques is described for efficient beam placement, in a line and plane. These techniques permit accurate, non-mechanical, beam steering limited by the response time of the liquid crystal cells. A theoretical limit to the number of discrete directions is described and closely approached for a one dimensional …
Thermal Cycling And Thermal Radiation Performances Of Novel Thermal Barrier Coatings, Li Wang
Thermal Cycling And Thermal Radiation Performances Of Novel Thermal Barrier Coatings, Li Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) play an important role in protecting the superalloy components from the hot gas stream in gas-turbine engines. Driven by the higher inlet temperature of modern gas turbine engines for higher efficiency and less harmful gas emission, exploration of TBC new materials and thermal radiation effects of TBCs have attracted more attentions recently. In this study, thermochemical compatibility of Gd2Zr2O7 (GZ) and yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) at 1300 ºC was investigated. Single, double and three ceramic-layered GZ based TBCs were prepared and their thermal cycling properties were performed under different thermal conditions. Thermochemical compatibility investigation showed that YSZ tended …
Pore-To-Continuum Multiscale Modeling Of Two-Phase Flow In Porous Media, Qiang Sheng
Pore-To-Continuum Multiscale Modeling Of Two-Phase Flow In Porous Media, Qiang Sheng
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Abstract Pore-scale network modeling using 3D X-ray computed tomographic images (digital rock technology) has become integral to both research and commercial simulations in recent years. While this technology provides tremendous insight into pore-scale behavior, computational methods for integrating the results into practical, continuum-scale models remain fairly primitive. The general approach is to run pore-scale models and continuum models sequentially, where macroscopic parameters are simulated using the pore-scale models and then used in the continuum models as if they have been obtained from laboratory experiments. While a sequential coupling approach is appealing in some cases, an inability to run the two …

Quantification Of The Environmental Impact Of Titanium Dioxide Photocatalytic Pavements For Air Pollution Remediation, Heather Lee Dylla
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Photocatalytic concrete pavements are a promising technology for mobile source air pollution remediation, however before widespread application of this technology is realized many unanswered questions remain regarding its overall environmental impact. In response to these questions, the goal of this study was to increase the understanding of the environmental impact of photocatalytic concrete pavement highways. To achieve this goal, the objectives of this study were to (A) construct a model that evaluates the nitrogen oxides (NOx) reduction from photocatalytic pavements, (B) quantify the nitrates released from the photocatalytic degradation of NOx, and (C) identify and characterize pathways for TiO2 nanoparticle …

Silver Nanoparticles As Drug Delivery Systems, Ammar Tahseen Qureshi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this project is to study the potential applications of silver nanoparticles (SNPs) in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries. Bone cements have been used in the orthopedic surgeries for many years to anchor prosthetics while filling up the spaces between the prostheses and bone. Antibiotics are an active component of bone cements but the increasing bacterial resistance to these antibiotics and difficulty of shaping and molding the bone cements increases the need for new antimicrobial biomaterials. Adult stem cell based regenerative therapies have been one of the most widely researched areas of tissue engineering. This is due …
Developing Defect-Tolerant Demolding Process In Nanoimprint Lithography, Alborz Amirsadeghi
Developing Defect-Tolerant Demolding Process In Nanoimprint Lithography, Alborz Amirsadeghi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Demolding, the process to separate stamp from molded resist, is most critical to the success of ultraviolet nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL). In the present study we first investigated adhesion and demolding force in UV-NIL for different compositions of a model UV-curable resist containing a base (either tripropyleneglycol diacrylate with shorter chain length or polypropyleneglycol diacrylate with longer chain length), a cross-linking agent (trimethylolpropane triacrylate) and a photoinitiator (Irgacure 651). The demolding force was measured using a tensile test machine after imprinting the UV resist on a silicon stamp. In general, the shorter monomer shows a larger demolding force. Decreasing the cross-linking …
Size Kinetics And Mechanics Of Clay-Biopolymer Flocs, Hang Yin
Size Kinetics And Mechanics Of Clay-Biopolymer Flocs, Hang Yin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The suspended cohesive sediments, mostly clay minerals with negative surface charges, usually interact through an array of intermolecular/surface forces (e.g., Coulomb force, van der Waals attractions, and hydrogen bonding) with waterborne organic matter (e.g., exopolymers) and dissolved salts, resulting in fractal, tenuous, and hybrid organic-inorganic flocs or “marine snow”. A pilot and systematic laboratory and theoretical work have been conducted towards a synthetic nanoscale understanding of the flocculation kinetics and mechanics of the clay-exopolymer micro-sized flocs. This systematic study has achieved two impressive objectives: (1) the effect of exopolymer polarity and concentration on the particle size kinetics of clay-exopolymer mixtures …
Exploiting Heterogeneity In Chip-Multiprocessor Design, Ying Zhang
Exploiting Heterogeneity In Chip-Multiprocessor Design, Ying Zhang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In the past decade, semiconductor manufacturers are persistent in building faster and smaller transistors in order to boost the processor performance as projected by Moore’s Law. Recently, as we enter the deep submicron regime, continuing the same processor development pace becomes an increasingly difficult issue due to constraints on power, temperature, and the scalability of transistors. To overcome these challenges, researchers propose several innovations at both architecture and device levels that are able to partially solve the problems. These diversities in processor architecture and manufacturing materials provide solutions to continuing Moore’s Law by effectively exploiting the heterogeneity, however, they also …
Designing A Cost Effective Microalgae Harvesting Strategy For Biodiesel Production With Electrocoagulation And Dissolved Air Flotation, Adam James Dassey
Designing A Cost Effective Microalgae Harvesting Strategy For Biodiesel Production With Electrocoagulation And Dissolved Air Flotation, Adam James Dassey
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Microalgal harvesting strategies for biodiesel production have been a major setback in the industry with high energy estimates of $3400/ton biomass by centrifugation. The present study utilized effective mass and energy balances to reduce these large operating costs. The energy for Stage 1 centrifugation was reduced by 82% when harvesting 28.5% of biomass at 18 L/min as opposed to 95% harvesting at 1 L/min. This strategy was further confirmed using electrocoagulation (EC) with Nannochloris and Dunaliella algae with perforated aluminum and iron electrodes at low (< 6 mg/L) metal ion concentrations. Despite 20% lower harvesting efficiencies, the iron electrodes were more energy and cost efficient with operating costs less than $0.03/L oil when flocculating and settling Nannochloris and Dunaliella cultures. Furthermore, a continuous multistage algae harvester using EC and dissolved air flotation (DAF) for Stage 1 harvesting and centrifugation for Stage 2 dewatering was designed. It was determined throughout the testing that greater EC costs for improved harvesting efficiencies were necessary to offset the large energy requirements of the DAF. The multistage system dewatered a low density (100 mg/L) Nannochloris to 20% solids for a final energy requirement of 1.536 kWh/kg algae ($138/ton). Using the data collected from this research and existing literature, a life cycle analysis was assembled to judge the sustainability of microalgal biofuels in Louisiana. High and low energy estimates for culturing (mixing, CO2, nutrients), harvesting, lipid extraction and energy conversion were compared with the current research. Scaling the EC/DAF system for a full size facility was expected to reduce the harvesting costs to 1.133 kWh/kg algae, resulting as $0.44/L oil for a culture with 20% lipids. Despite this improvement in harvesting costs, the production of algal for the sole purpose of biodiesel was not economically viable. Considering a system with a growth rate of 15 g/m2/day and lipid content of 20%, the energy inputs exceeded the outputs from biodiesel production by 36% under the most ideal conditions. However, incorporating additional revenue through wastewater treatment and biogas production from residual biomass could improve sustainability and profitability of algal biodiesel to an 18.5% energy surplus at its current state.
Evaluation Of Gas-Assisted Gravity Drainage Eor Process Applicability In A Louisiana Oil Field Through Experiments And Reservoir Simulation, Wagirin Ruiz Paidin
Evaluation Of Gas-Assisted Gravity Drainage Eor Process Applicability In A Louisiana Oil Field Through Experiments And Reservoir Simulation, Wagirin Ruiz Paidin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Gas-Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) process was developed as an alternative to conventional gas injection enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes, which suffer from their inherent weakness of combating gravity segregation. The GAGD process, however, is aimed at taking advantage of this phenomenon and consists of using horizontal producers near the bottom of the payzone while injecting gas using vertical injection wells. It is hypothesized that the injected gas will rise to the top, thereby forming a gas cap while displacing reservoir brine/oil downward towards the producers. In this study, a single-well alternative to the multi-well GAGD process was investigated to …
Geodatabase-Assisted Storm Surge Modeling, Sait Ahmet Binselam
Geodatabase-Assisted Storm Surge Modeling, Sait Ahmet Binselam
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Tropical cyclone-generated storm surge frequently causes catastrophic damage in communities along the Gulf of Mexico. The prediction of landfalling or hypothetical storm surge magnitudes in U.S. Gulf Coast regions remains problematic, in part, because of the dearth of historic event parameter data, including accurate records of storm surge magnitude (elevation) at locations along the coast from hurricanes. While detailed historical records exist that describe hurricane tracks, these data have rarely been correlated with the resulting storm surge, limiting our ability to make statistical inferences, which are needed to fully understand the vulnerability of the U.S. Gulf Coast to hurricane-induced storm …
Modeling Foam Delivery Mechanisms In Deep Vadose-Zone Remediation Using Method Of Characteristics (Moc), Alireza Roostapour
Modeling Foam Delivery Mechanisms In Deep Vadose-Zone Remediation Using Method Of Characteristics (Moc), Alireza Roostapour
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigates foam delivery mechanisms in vadose-zone remediation by using Method of Characteristics (MoC). In such applications, dry foams are introduced into a porous medium which is initially at low saturation of water (Sw) containing pollutants such as metals and radionuclides. For vadose-zone remediation processes to be successful, the injected aqueous phase should carry chemicals to react with pollutants and precipitate them for immobilization and stabilization purposes. Typical remediation techniques such as water and surfactant injections are not applicable, because of the concerns about downward migration. As a result, understanding foam flow mechanism in-situ is key to the optimal …
Measurement Of Continuum Breakdown Using A Disc Spin-Down Experiment In Low Pressure Air, Tathagata Acharya
Measurement Of Continuum Breakdown Using A Disc Spin-Down Experiment In Low Pressure Air, Tathagata Acharya
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As flow becomes rarefied, a quantity called as the tangential momentum accommodation coefficient (TMAC) becomes important because it is a measure of the momentum transport from a gas molecule to a surface. Very few experimental measurements of continuum breakdown in boundary layer flows exist. All experimental measurements of the TMAC in macro-scale boundary layer flows have been done in the continuum slip and the transition flow regimes. Moreover the experimental apparatus used by previous researchers cannot accommodate for materials that are planar by nature such as those used in the field of aerospace and microfabrication. The objectives of this research …
Multiscale Analysis Of Contact In Smooth And Rough Surfaces: Contact Characteristics And Tribo-Damage, Ali Beheshti
Multiscale Analysis Of Contact In Smooth And Rough Surfaces: Contact Characteristics And Tribo-Damage, Ali Beheshti
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is comprised of two major interrelated foci. The first focus is to investigate the effect of surface roughness on the behavior of dry contacting bodies through both deterministic and statistical approaches. In the current research, different statistical micro-contact models are employed together with the bulk deformation of the bounding solids to predict the characteristics of the dry rough line-contact and elliptical point-contact including the apparent pressure profile, contact dimensions and real area of contact. Further, based on the results of numerical simulations, useful relationships are provided for the contact characteristics. In addition, a robust approach for the deterministic …
A Metaheuristic-Based Simulation Optimization Framework For Supply Chain Inventory Management Under Uncertainty, Qinglin Duan
A Metaheuristic-Based Simulation Optimization Framework For Supply Chain Inventory Management Under Uncertainty, Qinglin Duan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The need for inventory control models for practical real-world applications is growing with the global expansion of supply chains. The widely used traditional optimization procedures usually require an explicit mathematical model formulated based on some assumptions. The validity of such models and approaches for real world applications depend greatly upon whether the assumptions made match closely with the reality. The use of meta-heuristics, as opposed to a traditional method, does not require such assumptions and has allowed more realistic modeling of the inventory control system and its solution. In this dissertation, a metaheuristic-based simulation optimization framework is developed for supply …
Micro & Nano Scale Mechanical Testing And Assembly With Applications To Metal Based Microsystems, Ke Chen
Micro & Nano Scale Mechanical Testing And Assembly With Applications To Metal Based Microsystems, Ke Chen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Metal-based high-aspect-ratio microscale structures (HARMS) are fundamental building blocks for functional metallic micro devices. This dissertation focuses on addressing several problems in fabrication and assembly of metal based microchannel devices. First, the materials’ responses to mechanical deformation at micro & nano scales, namely the mechanical “size effect”, have been explored by molding single crystal Al with long rectangular diamond punches and long wedge shaped indenters. It is noticed that the contact pressure of rectangular punches pressed into single crystal Al strongly depends on the punch width, while that of long wedge shaped indenters depends on the included wedge angle. We …
An Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Rotating Flexible Shaft System Dynamics In Rotary Drilling Assemblies For Down Hole Drilling Vibration Mitigation, Richard Duff
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Rotary drilling system vibration has long been associated with damaging the bit, the bottom hole assembly (BHA) and drill string. Vibration has been traditionally measured in the bottom hole assembly, and been closely associated with the resonant behaviors.
This research study proposes an improved physical laboratory model to explore the dynamic behaviors associated with vibration. This model includes contact with the borehole wall allowing a range of stabilization geometries while removing bit-formation interaction effects. The results of exercising the model help develop new insights into both vibration measurement diagnostics and mitigation strategy execution.
Presented here is a review of other …

Modeling Temporal And Spatial Variations In Dissolved Oxygen In Amite River, Vahid Zahraeifard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A watershed-based modeling framework is developed in this dissertation for simulating temporal and spatial variations in DO in lowland rivers with organic-rich fine-grained sediment. The modeling framework is based on three major contributions/new models, including (1)VART-DO model for improved estimation of reaeration coefficient (K2) in natural streams, (2)VART-DOS model for simulation of temporal variations in DO in response to sediment resuspension, and (3)VART DO-3L model for simulation of spatial variations in DO. A major advantage of VART-DO model is the capability of simulating DO exchange across the water-sediment interface through the hyporheic exchange mechanism in addition to the air-water exchange. …

A New Diagnostics Tool For Water Injected Gas Turbines - Emissions Monitoring And Modeling, Mohammed Shafi Syed
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Natural gas-fired cogeneration systems are commonly used for large-scale industrial energy production – both electricity generation and heat recovery. Industrial cogeneration currently represents about 8% of the U.S. total electricity generation capacity. Plans call for cogeneration to increase to 20% of the generation capacity by the end of 2030 [1, 2]. Industrial cogeneration systems attain both high thermal efficiency and low emissions. The attainment of low emissions from natural gas fired turbines, in particular low NOx emissions, is of considerable environmental importance especially as coal becomes a less favorable fuel source. Our current project addresses emissions and performance modeling of …

Numerical Evaluation And Analysis Of The Adhesion Phenomena In Thermal Barrier Coating Systems Through Bio-Mimicking Plasma Process, Naser Imran Hossain
Numerical Evaluation And Analysis Of The Adhesion Phenomena In Thermal Barrier Coating Systems Through Bio-Mimicking Plasma Process, Naser Imran Hossain
LSU Master's Theses
Thermal Barrier Coatings or TBCs when abbreviated are an imperative part of the thermal protection system of expensive equipment and machinery in the automobile and aeronautics industry. They provide protection to expensive alloy materials upto a temperature of 2700° C without expensive metallurgical additions. Unfortunately, the problem of coating adhesion has plagued the TBC field for years, leading to catastrophic failures in critical TBC systems. Efforts to chemically improve bond strength has not been entirely successful, so the only other efficient way to do this would be some kind of mechanical interlocking that occurs at micro/nano scales. This research work …
Comparison Of In Vivo Human Knee Joint Kinematics Using Axodes, Jacob Hipps
Comparison Of In Vivo Human Knee Joint Kinematics Using Axodes, Jacob Hipps
LSU Master's Theses
The human knee is of particular interest because of its importance in mobility. Pain and stability can be directly related to the motion, or kinematics, of the knee. Many studies have been conducted to quantify human knee kinematics, both in vitro and in vivo. One of the inherent issues with in vivo, skin mounted measurement systems is that they do not account for soft tissue artifact. Compensation for soft tissue artifact has been a difficult challenge for skin mounted tracking systems and has not yet been achieved. Therefore, bone mounted skeletal pins were chosen as the method of gathering kinematic …
Finite Element Modeling Of Hot-Mix Asphalt Performance In The Laboratory, Hao Ying
Finite Element Modeling Of Hot-Mix Asphalt Performance In The Laboratory, Hao Ying
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The theoretical investigation of Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) response in the dynamic modulus and the semi-circular bending (SCB) laboratory test procedures is necessary to understand the influence of various design parameters on the performance of the mix. In addition, laboratory tests such as the dynamic complex modulus assume that this material can be dealt with as a homogeneous material while overlooking the particulate nature of this composite. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop an advanced theoretical framework, based on three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) methods and digital image analysis techniques to describe the behavior of HMA in two …

Restoration projects use native plants such as sea oats (Uniola paniculata) to help stabilize the coast. Sea oats are a native grass that can collect blowing sand to build dunes. Sea oats used in the restoration projects can be produced using sexual or asexual techniques. An ideal seedling would be genetically distinct, have increased seed production and germination, and have superior vegetative biomass. Finding ways to produce, propagate, and grow coastal plants such as sea oats effectively is critical to efforts to reduce erosion. In this study, production of sea oats via greenhouse based hydroponic systems was studied. This was …

Development Of A Laboratory Scale Reactor Facility To Generate Hydrogen Rich Syngas Via Thermochemical Energy Conversion, Mandeep Sharma
LSU Master's Theses
The thesis provides data needed for development of a conical spouted bed (CSB) reactor for the purpose of producing hydrogen rich synthesis gas (syngas). The syngas has potential to utilize energy more efficiently, eliminate pollutant emissions and significantly cut emissions of greenhouse gases. The development of CSB reactor system involves three phases. The first phase investigates the hydrodynamic behavior of a small, laboratory scale, conical spouted bed (CSB) by considering the effect of specific system parameters (stagnated bed height, particle size and inlet diameter) on minimum spouting velocity (ums)o, stable operating pressure drop (∆Pms) and maximum pressure drop (∆PM). Experimental …
