3d Integration Of Micro- And Nanostructures Into Bio-Analytical Devices, Bahador Farshchian

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study aims to develop a process which allows 3D integration of micro and nanostructures in microchannels. A fabrication process was established for the large area integration of hierarchical micro and nanostructures in microchannels. This novel process, which is called 3D molding, takes advantage of an intermediate thin flexible stamp such as PDMS from soft lithography and a hard mold such as brass from hot embossing process. However, the use of a thin intermediate polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp inevitably causes dimensional changes in the 3D molded channel, with respect to those in the brass mold protrusion and the intermediate PDMS stamp …

Resolving Pronominal Anaphora Using Commonsense Knowledge, Seyedeh Leili Javadpour Jan 2013

Resolving Pronominal Anaphora Using Commonsense Knowledge, Seyedeh Leili Javadpour

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Coreference resolution is the task of resolving all expressions in a text that refer to the same entity. Such expressions are often used in writing and speech as shortcuts to avoid repetition. The most frequent form of coreference is the anaphor. To resolve anaphora not only grammatical and syntactical strategies are required, but also semantic approaches should be taken into consideration. This dissertation presents a framework for automatically resolving pronominal anaphora by integrating recent findings from the field of linguistics with new semantic features. Commonsense knowledge is the routine knowledge people have of the everyday world. Because such knowledge is …

Discrete Time Modeling And Control Of Dc/Dc Switching Converter For Solar Energy Systems, Shaghayegh Kazemlou Jan 2013

Discrete Time Modeling And Control Of Dc/Dc Switching Converter For Solar Energy Systems, Shaghayegh Kazemlou

LSU Master's Theses

Distributed generation networks including micro grids benefit from solar cells that are controlled by dc-dc converters. In this research a nonlinear discrete-time model for a buck converter tied to a solar system is derived with unknown internal dynamics. Then, adaptive neural network (NN) controller is employed to enhance stability of dc-dc converter connected to grid-tie inverter (GTI) in the presence of power system disturbances. The NN weights are tuned online by using a novel update law. By using Lyapunov techniques, all signals can be shown to be uniformly ultimately bounded (UUB). In addition, the interaction of the converter with the …

Fabrication And Characterization Of A Polymeric Nanofluidic Device For Dna Analysis, Jiahao Wu Jan 2013

Fabrication And Characterization Of A Polymeric Nanofluidic Device For Dna Analysis, Jiahao Wu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The growing needs for cheaper and faster sequencing of long biopolymers such as DNA and RNA have prompted the development of new technologies. Among the novel techniques for analyzing these biopolymers, an approach using nanochannel based fluidic devices is attractive because it is a label-free, amplification-free, single-molecule method that can be scaled for high-throughput analysis. Despite recent demonstrations of nanochannel based fluidic devices for analyzing physical properties of such biopolymers, most of the devices have been fabricated in inorganic materials such as silicon, silicon nitride and glass using expensive high end nanofabrication techniques such as focused ion beam and electron …

Feedback Control Of Sector-Bound Nonlinear Systems With Applications To Aeroengine Control, Luis Donaldo Alvergue Jan 2013

Feedback Control Of Sector-Bound Nonlinear Systems With Applications To Aeroengine Control, Luis Donaldo Alvergue

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is divided into two parts. In the first part we consider the problem of feedback stabilization of nonlinear systems described by state-space models. This approach is inherited from the methodology of sector bounded or passive nonlinearities, and influenced by the concept of absolute and quadratic stability. It aims not only to regionally stabilize the nonlinear dynamics asymptotically but also to maximize the estimated region of quadratic attraction and to ensure nominal performance at each equilibrium. In close connection to gain scheduling and switching control, a path of equilibria is programmed based on the assumption of centered-epsilon-cover which leads …

Fe(Iii)2o3 Nanoparticle Mediated Molecular Growth And Soot Particle Inception From The Oxidative Pyrolysis Of 1-Methylnaphthalene, Michael Paul Herring

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The potential for Fe(III)2O3 nanoparticles to participate in the molecular growth and particle inception of soot from 1-methylnapthalene (1-MN) was studied in a dual-zone, high-temperature flow reactor. An iron substituted, dendrimer template was oxidized in the Zone 1 reactor to generate ~5nm Fe(III)2O3 nanoparticles, that were continually seeded to a high sooting 1-MN fuel under oxidative pyrolysis conditions. The Fe(III)2O3 nanoparticles could then influence the otherwise gas-phase reactions of 1-MN. Increased PAH formation, soot number density, soot mass yield, and soot radical intensity were observed as a result of Fe(III)2O3 nanoparticle introduction prior to soot inception. Low Temperature Matrix Isolation-Electron …

The complex siliciclastic aquifer system underneath the Baton Rouge area, Louisiana, USA, is fluvial in origin. The east-west trending Baton Rouge fault and Denham Springs-Scotlandville fault cut across East Baton Rouge Parish and play an important role in groundwater flow and aquifer salinization. To better understand the salinization underneath Baton Rouge, it is imperative to study the hydrofacies architecture and the groundwater flow field of the Baton Rogue aquifer-fault system. This is done through developing multiple detailed hydrofacies architecture models and multiple groundwater flow models of the aquifer-fault system, representing various uncertain model propositions. The hydrofacies architecture models focus on …

Fast And Reliable Detection Of Incumbent Users In Cognitive Radios, Mahdi Orooji Jan 2013

Fast And Reliable Detection Of Incumbent Users In Cognitive Radios, Mahdi Orooji

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Fast and reliable Spectrum Sensing (SS) plays a crucial role in the cognitive radio (CR) technology in order to prevent unwanted interference to the primary users (PU) and to reliably and quickly detect the white spaces in the spectrum for opportunistic access by the secondary users (SU). Spectrum Sensing must often be performed in the absence of information such as PU signaling scheme, noise level and channel fading coefficients. While these parameters can be estimated in the SU, estimation errors significantly deteriorates the performance of SS techniques. In this thesis, we introduce and evaluate the performance of two novel blind …

Modeling, Numerical Analysis, And Predictions For The Detonation Of Multi-Component Energetic Solids, Michael Wayne Crochet Jan 2013

Modeling, Numerical Analysis, And Predictions For The Detonation Of Multi-Component Energetic Solids, Michael Wayne Crochet

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Metal powders are often used as an additive to conventional high explosives to enhance the post-detonation blast wave. Piston-impact simulations are commonly utilized to predict performance metrics such as detonation speed and strength, as well as assessing the impact and shock sensitivity of these materials. The system response is strongly influenced by the initial particle size distribution and material composition. Multiphase continuum models have been routinely applied at the macroscale to characterize the detonation of solid high explosives over engineering length scales. Current models lack a description of the physically permissible constitutive relations for mass transfer due to general chemical …

Modeling Of Shear Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Retrofitted With Externally Bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymers, Srinivasa Anusha Bellamkonda Jan 2013

Modeling Of Shear Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Retrofitted With Externally Bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymers, Srinivasa Anusha Bellamkonda

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis presents a study on the shear retrofit of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with externally bonded fiber reinforced polymers (FRP), since it is very important for RC beam to have a shear strength that is higher than the flexural strength in order to ensure ductile flexural failure mode. The study proposes a new model to predict the FRP shear strength contribution for different modes of failure, i.e., bending, shear with FRP rupture, shear with FRP debonding, and mixed shear-flexure and various retrofit techniques, i.e., side-bonding, U-jacketing, and full wrapping. The proposed model is compared to other existing models for …

Design Flood Elevations Beyond Code Requirements And Current Best Practices, Frank H. Bohn Jan 2013

Design Flood Elevations Beyond Code Requirements And Current Best Practices, Frank H. Bohn

LSU Master's Theses

In the United States, nearly 9 million people, 3.0% of the population, live in areas subject to the 1% annual chance (100-yr) coastal flood hazard. New construction and substantial improvements in coastal high hazard areas require structures to be elevated above the design flood elevation (DFE), without the use of fill (Bellomo et al. 1999). Building code requirements for flood elevation are linked to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) insurance policies, and represent the minimum requirement for building elevation. Current elevation procedures are limited to the 100-year base flood elevation with minimal guidance beyond the 100-year elevation in many …

To optimize the use of RWD at the network level, an assessment tool is needed to incorporate RWD data into current Pavement Management System (PMS) and to identify pavements in need of maintenance or rehabilitation. The objective of this study is to present the development of a screening tool, referred to as the pavement assessment triangular model, to predict pavement overall conditions based on RWD deflection, roughness measurements, and surface conditions as described by the Pavement …

Thermal, Compositional, And Salinity Effects On Wettability And Oil Recovery In A Dolomite Reservoir, Azadeh Kafili Kasmaei Jan 2013

Thermal, Compositional, And Salinity Effects On Wettability And Oil Recovery In A Dolomite Reservoir, Azadeh Kafili Kasmaei

LSU Master's Theses

Low salinity and composition effects in improving oil recovery in sandstone reservoirs are known. However, these effects have not been thoroughly studied for the carbonate reservoirs. Because of the lack of the clay minerals in the carbonate rocks, the mechanisms for the improved oil recovery with low salinity, brine composition, and temperature may not be the same as those for sandstones. This experimental study attempts to investigate the effects of low salinity, brine composition, and temperature on wettability and oil recovery in a dolomite reservoir. Also, it is attempted to confirm that wettability alteration is the main mechanism for improvement …

Erosional Resistance Of Cohesive Sediments In Coastal Saltmarshes, Hem Raj Pant Jan 2013

Erosional Resistance Of Cohesive Sediments In Coastal Saltmarshes, Hem Raj Pant

LSU Master's Theses

Louisiana’s saltmarshes, one of the most productive wetlands in the nation, are undergoing severe erosion due to hydrodynamic forces (storm surge) and sea level rise. The erosional behavior of coastal saltmarshes, which possess cohesive sediments as their integral components, are very difficult to analyze and understand. The erosional resistance of cohesive sediments determines the stability and sustainability of coastal wetlands. This erosional resistance is expressed as an erosion threshold or critical shear stress, which depends on various soil properties (e.g. water content, root content, organic matter content, and pore water salinity) affecting saltmarsh erodibility integratively. A cohesive strength meter was …

Reaction Of Green Leaf Volatiles As A Source Of Secondary Organic Aerosols In Fog Droplets, Amie Kathryn Hansel Jan 2013

Reaction Of Green Leaf Volatiles As A Source Of Secondary Organic Aerosols In Fog Droplets, Amie Kathryn Hansel

LSU Master's Theses

Green leaf volatiles (GLVs) are a group of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) released into the atmosphere by vegetation when plants undergo stress or mechanical damage. BVOCs produce secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in the gas phase; however, their oxidation as a source of SOA in the liquid phase has not been investigated. Once released into the atmosphere, water-soluble GLVs partition into atmospheric water phases such as fog, mist, dew or rain, where they are oxidized by hydroxyl radicals (ÿOH). Photochemical oxidation yields products that are higher in molecular weight, more polar, more oxygenated, and lower in vapor pressure. When the …

The Diagnosis Of Well Control Complications During Managed Pressure Drilling, Brian Piccolo Jan 2013

The Diagnosis Of Well Control Complications During Managed Pressure Drilling, Brian Piccolo

LSU Master's Theses

The constant bottom-hole pressure method of managed pressure drilling is generally expected to reduce well control risks and apply well understood concepts when a kick is taken. Nevertheless, complications, such as operator error, leaks, plugging, equipment failures, and exceeding kick tolerance, can occur during kick circulation. By not properly interpreting the symptoms of a complication, a driller risks the consequences of additional influx, lost circulation or the simultaneous occurrence of both. To address the challenge of diagnosing complications, the implied pit gain (IPG) method is being evaluated as an enhancement to established industry practices. Traditional diagnostic methods attempt to match …

A continuous-flow system composed of two anaerobic bioreactor (ABR) columns (based on engineered wetland systems) connected in series was tested to observe the ability of such a system to treat multiple volatile organic compounds (VOCs) possessing suspected inhibitory effects on the dechlorination of other compounds with cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (cDCE) and 1,1-dichloroethane (1,1-DCA) as the main test chemicals. Following the establishment of cDCE and 1,1-DCA dechlorinating ability at baseline conditions, system perturbations of breakthrough and starvation were conducted to measure the response and recovery of the system dechlorination. In all column experiments, it was observed cDCE dechlorination inhibited the dechlorination of 1,1-DCA …

Development Of Watershed-Based Modeling Approach To Pollution Source Identification, Yangbin Tong Jan 2013

Development Of Watershed-Based Modeling Approach To Pollution Source Identification, Yangbin Tong

LSU Master's Theses

Identification of unknown pollution sources is essential to environmental protection and emergency response. A review of recent publications in source identification revealed that there are very limited numbers of research in modeling methods for rivers. What’s more, the majority of these attempts were to find the source strength and release time, while only a few of them discussed how to identify source locations. Comparisons of these works indicated that a combination of biological, mathematical and geographical method could effectively identify unknown source area(s), which was a more practical trial in a watershed. This thesis presents a watershed-based modeling approach to …

Design And Implementation Of A Very Short Retention Time Filtrate Clarifier, Santiago Alfredo Grimaldo Jan 2013

Design And Implementation Of A Very Short Retention Time Filtrate Clarifier, Santiago Alfredo Grimaldo

LSU Master's Theses

Filtrate, which accounts for almost 15 to 20% of the mixed juice produced in a raw sugar factory, is usually recirculated, which is detrimental to the process. This can lead to: increased sugar inversion and reduction in both sugar quality and clarifier performance. Previous attempts on filtrate clarification have shown limitations for its implementation due to the long residence times of the clarifiers, complex operations and low quality of clarified filtrate. A filtrate clarification pilot plant using a very short residence time clarifier (10 minutes) was designed and tested during the 2012 Louisiana sugarcane harvesting season. Louisiana Low Turbulence technology …
