The Effect Of Rest Period On Fatigue Using Electromyography During Manual Lifting, Nandakumar Prabhakar
The Effect Of Rest Period On Fatigue Using Electromyography During Manual Lifting, Nandakumar Prabhakar
LSU Master's Theses
Manual materials handing (MMH) is the main cause and concern for injuries in the working population which lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). MSDs significantly contribute to the cost of workers’ compensation and loss of productivity, thus impacting economy of the United States. MSDs are mainly caused due to over exertion and fatigue experienced by workers involved in manual materials handling. In addition to over-exertion and fatigue, lack of short and frequent rest intervals between tasks contributes to the risk of MSDs. The objective of this research was to study the effect of rest period on muscle fatigue using electromyography (EMG) …
Micro Combustion Of Primary Reference Fuels In Narrow Heated Channels, Veerendra Naralasetti
Micro Combustion Of Primary Reference Fuels In Narrow Heated Channels, Veerendra Naralasetti
LSU Master's Theses
Conventional fuel testing machines like CFR engines require large quantities of fuel. The current study seeks to overcome this limitation by introducing an alternative method using a microscale combustion reactor which consumes relatively small amounts of fuel (100-250 ml). For this reason, Primary Reference Fuels (PRF’s: volumetric mixtures of n-heptane and iso-octane) which are simple surrogates of gasoline are selected to test using micro reactor. The primary goal is to determine the effectiveness of using the micro reactor setup to differentiate fuels of different octane number. Experiments with stoichiometric PRF/air mixtures are performed inside a cylindrical quartz tube of 1mm …
Applications Of Computational Models On Studying Particulate Systems, Jielin Yu
Applications Of Computational Models On Studying Particulate Systems, Jielin Yu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Particulate systems have been widely studied because of its various phenomena and tight relationship with industry applications. In this dissertation, two types of computational models have been adopted to study two problems with different particulate systems: granular self-organization inside a cylinder driven by an orbital-shaker and the optimal design of bypass line for an industrial-scale 8‑leg polyolefin loop reactor.
In the first study, behavior of both single particle and multiple particles in a rotating cylinder has been modeled by discrete element method (DEM) to understand the mechanism of granular self-organization. Sets of studies have then been performed to study the …
Electrocatalytic Properties Of Ni-Fe Basedalloys Toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction, Xiaodan Cui
Electrocatalytic Properties Of Ni-Fe Basedalloys Toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction, Xiaodan Cui
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, laser-based manufacturing was applied to develop NiFe-based alloys, with focus on their electrochemical characteristics toward oxygen evolution reaction during water electrocatalysis. The targeted electrocatalysts were designed by combining catalysis principles of absorption energy, electronic effect and geometry effect. Firstly, a one-step laser-based manufacturing method was applied to prepare a thin layer of NiFe-based electrodes with varied Ni to Fe ratios to replace high-cost noble metals as the electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Since each Ni has 0.6 d-vacancy and each Fe atom has 2.2 d-vacancies. The alloying of Ni-Fe allows electrons flowing from Ni to Fe, …
Modeling Of The Veterinary Anesthetic Circuit, Corinne Viloria Duplantis
Modeling Of The Veterinary Anesthetic Circuit, Corinne Viloria Duplantis
LSU Master's Theses
Anesthesia is used to sedate both humans and animals for surgery. In veterinary practice, breathing systems are often used to supply anesthetic gas to the patient. Occasionally, a large amount of pressure can build up in the breathing circuit. This high pressure, if unnoticed, can lead to fatal injury to the lungs of the veterinary patient. The maximum allowable pressure in the anesthetic circuit for small animals is 25 cmH2O or 2450 Pa. As such, it is necessary to monitor oxygen flow rate (ranging from 0.1-4 LPM), pressure, oxygen rate, anesthetic composition, among other variables during an operation. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polyaniline Agglomerates And Polyaniline Nanoparticles To Use As Printed Sensors To Detect Spoilage Of Catfish During Refrigerated Storage, Vashti Martae Campbell
LSU Master's Theses
There is growing interest in the development of sensors contained in packaging for seafood that are applicable at the consumer level to monitor freshness in a non-destructive manner. Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) analysis indicates the freshness of seafood. TVB-N analysis is sensitive to the spoilage compounds comprised of ammonia, trimethylamine, dimethylamine, and biogenic amines commonly found in seafood and whose concentration increases when spoilage microbial growth occurs. However, TVB-N analysis is laborious and is not suitable for use at the consumer level. Polyaniline (PANI) is a polymer that may be used as a sensor for detecting TVB-N in seafood. …
Modeling And Analysis Of Thermal Effects On A Fractured Wellbore During Lost Circulation And Wellbore Strengthening Processes, Ze Wang
LSU Master's Theses
To successfully prevent fracture propagation and combat lost circulation, a thorough understanding of the stress state in the near-wellbore region with fractures is imperative. One important factor that is not yet fully understood is how temperature variation during lost circulation affects pre-existing or newly initiated fractures. To address this problem, a 3D finite element analysis was conducted in this study to simulate the transport processes and state of stresses in the near-wellbore region during mud invasion into fractures. To take the thermal effects into account, a thermo-poro-elasticity model was coupled with flow and heat transfer processes. This study included a …

Integrated Reservoir-Wellbore Nodal Analysis Workflow For Worst-Case Discharge Modeling, Florencia Anahi Vasquez Cordoba
LSU Master's Theses
According to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), worst-case discharge (WCD) is the single highest possible daily flow rate of liquid hydrocarbon during an uncontrolled wellbore flow event [49]. The main objective of this research is to develop a workflow to calculate worst case discharge (WCD) volumes for a drilling scenario using an integrated reservoir-nodal analyses approach. Using robust integrated production modeling (IPM) tools, a nodal analysis workflow is developed to compute WCD volumes and rates that operators can use easily if they have IPM, or adapt to using a different software (including excel) in absence of IPM. A …
Predicting River Stage Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Eric Rohli
Predicting River Stage Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Eric Rohli
LSU Master's Theses
River stage prediction is an important problem in the water transportation industry. Accurate river stage predictions provide crucial information to barge and tow boat operators, port terminal captains, and lock management officials. Shallow river levels caused by prolonged drought impact the loading capacity of barges and tow boats. High river levels caused by excessive rainfall or snowmelt allow for greater tow capacities but make downstream transportation and lock management risky. Current academic river height prediction systems utilize either time series statistical analysis or machine learning algorithms to forecast future river heights, but systems that combine these two areas often limit …

Demonstration Of The Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (Gagd) Process In Carbonate Rocks., Alok Jiteshkumar Shah
LSU Master's Theses
The Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) process was developed and patented by Dr. Rao at LSU in the early 2000s. The process involves the use of several existing or new vertical injection wells to inject gas and use the natural segregation of reservoir fluids from the density difference and the gravitational forces to displace the trapped oil and mobilize the oil downwards to be produced by a horizontal producing well. The GAGD process can be implemented as a secondary or tertiary oil recovery method. Several physical model experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the GAGD process for …

The selected water balance models are the simple one-parameter Budyko-type model using the Zhang’s equation with single parameter (a) and the more complex model (HELP3) applying Soil Conservation Service (SCS) curve number method to calculate future runoff predictions. The study has a twofold focus, first on explaining the …
Heuristics For Client Assignment And Load Balancing Problems In Online Games, Shawn Michael Farlow
Heuristics For Client Assignment And Load Balancing Problems In Online Games, Shawn Michael Farlow
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) have been very popular over the past decade. The infrastructure necessary to support a large number of players simultaneously playing these games raises interesting problems to solve. Since the computations involved in solving those problems need to be done while the game is being played, they should not be so expensive that they cause any noticeable slowdown, as this would lead to a poor player perception of the game. Many of the problems in MMOGs are NP-Hard or NP-Complete, therefore we must develop heuristics for those problems without negatively affecting the player experience as a …

Wave Attenuation By Constructed Oyster Reef Breakwaters, Jason M. Chauvin
LSU Master's Theses
Biloxi Marsh, located along the shoreline of Eloi Bay in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana has experienced significant shoreline erosion in recent years. The Living Shoreline Demonstration Project, completed in November 2016, constructed three miles of living shoreline structures to attenuate waves and thus combat marsh edge erosion along the shoreline of Eloi Bay. Several types of constructed oyster reef breakwaters were installed for this demonstration project. Due to the experimental nature of these products, available performance characteristics are limited.
This research measures wave attenuation across the constructed oyster reef breakwaters using bottom-mounted pressure gauges. Seven pressure gauges were deployed to …
Microstructural Characterization Of Shear Transformation Zones And Modeling Indentation Size Effect In Amorphous Polymers, Leila Malekmotiei
Microstructural Characterization Of Shear Transformation Zones And Modeling Indentation Size Effect In Amorphous Polymers, Leila Malekmotiei
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The first aim of this work is developing a procedure for experimental and analytical characterization of nano-scale microstructures which mediate large scale deformation in amorphous polymers. Glassy polymers are extensively used as high impact resistant, low density, and clear materials in industries. Nevertheless, their response under severe loading conditions is yet to be appropriately unraveled. Due to the lack of long-range order in the microstructures of glassy solids, their plastic deformation is different from that in crystalline solids. Shear Transformation Zones (STZs) are believed to be the main plasticity carriers in amorphous solids and defined as the localized atomic or …

A Coupled Thermo-Mechanical Theory Of Strain Gradient Plasticity For Small And Finite Deformations, Yooseob Song
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this work, a thermodynamically consistent coupled thermo-mechanical gradient enhanced continuum plasticity theory is developed for small and finite deformations. The proposed model is conceptually based on the dislocations interaction mechanisms and thermal activation energy. The thermodynamic conjugate microstresses are decomposed into energetic and dissipative components. This work incorporates the thermal and mechanical responses of microsystems. It addresses phenomena such as size and boundary effects and in particular microscale heat transfer in fast-transient processes. Not only the partial heat dissipation caused by the fast transient time, but also the distribution of temperature caused by the transition from the plastic work …
Pore-Scale And Conventional Wettability Measurement Considerations For Improving Certainty Of Geological Co2 Sequestration, Mohammad Jafari
Pore-Scale And Conventional Wettability Measurement Considerations For Improving Certainty Of Geological Co2 Sequestration, Mohammad Jafari
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Parallel to the approach of developing zero-carbon-emission energies, other solutions have been recently proposed to decrease the amount of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Geological CO2 sequestration (GCS) has provided economic benefits and slight adverse environmental effects. GCS involves capturing CO2 from large producers, then injecting it into deep layers of the earth’s subsurface to be stored for hundreds to thousands of years. A safe and economic GCS requires a profound knowledge of immiscible CO2-water/brine fluid flow in CO2 storage sites including capillary pressure which has a barrier effect against leakage. The main uncertainty in measuring capillary pressure is due …

A true understanding of the mechanisms behind most of the brain diseases is still out of reach. For several years, the interest of scientists has been focused on the genetic and biological causes, however, recent studies unraveled the importance of the biomechanics of the brain growth, folding, impact resistance, and deformation on its pathological conditions. While, a wide range of different methods have been used for characterization of the mechanical properties of the brain at the tissue level, the obtained results from different studies are extremely scattered and sometimes in contrast to one another. Since the brain tissue is extremely …
Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Liquid-Assisted Gas-Lift Unloading, Renato Peixoto Coutinho
Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Liquid-Assisted Gas-Lift Unloading, Renato Peixoto Coutinho
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The case for a unique form of gas-lift unloading, termed “Liquid-Assisted Gas-Lift (LAGL),” is presented. This work demonstrates that the injection of a gas-liquid mixture allows transport of gas to a deep injection point utilizing injection pressure considerably lower than single-phase gas injection. The LAGL is demonstrated in a 2,880 ft deep test well. The test well is kicked-off using an injection pressure that would normally be lower than the pressure for single-point single-phase gas injection at this depth. Experimental results indicate that the LAGL can lower the injection pressure by up to 75%.
This work breaks the LAGL system …

Dams are important structures to supply water for irrigation or drinking, to control flood, and to generate electricity. In seismic regions, the structural safety of concrete gravity dams is important due to the high potential of life and economic loss if they fail. Therefore, the seismic analysis of existing dams in seismically active regions is very crucial to predict responses of dams to ground motions. In this thesis, earthquake response of concrete gravity dams is investigated using the finite element (FE) method. The selected dam is the Pine Flat Dam which is located in the Central Valley of Fresno County, …
Two-Phase Flow Regime Map For Large Diameter Pipes And High-Velocity Flows, Matheus Sigaki Capovilla
Two-Phase Flow Regime Map For Large Diameter Pipes And High-Velocity Flows, Matheus Sigaki Capovilla
LSU Master's Theses
Worst-case-discharge (WCD) calculations are a pre-requisite for any new well to be drilled in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Models that were mostly developed for production rates prediction are currently used to calculate the WCD rate. These models were mostly developed for pipe diameters and flow velocities much smaller than those expected during WCD events. Therefore, these models may be miscalculating WCD rates.
This study aims at analyzing one of possible sources of errors in these models: the flow regime maps. The influence of diameter change on flow regimes is discussed. A thorough literature review is carried out for different …
The Fabrication Of High-Aspect Ratio Gratings For Talbot Interferometer With Medical Imaging Application., Vikaram Singh
The Fabrication Of High-Aspect Ratio Gratings For Talbot Interferometer With Medical Imaging Application., Vikaram Singh
LSU Master's Theses
X-ray Phase contrast-based Talbot interferometer creates high contrast between weak and strong absorbing materials, which makes it effective in imaging soft tissues. However, its performance is bounded by the aspect-ratio, features and symmetry of its gratings. For 40 KeV energy X-rays, the analyzer grating thickness should be 100 µm or more to achieve > 90% absorption in order to obtain high contrast images. Moreover, the smaller period in grating is desired for higher resolution. Therefore, researchers are exploring various fabrication techniques to achieve greater aspect-ratio gratings. Utilizing modern LIGA techniques, the aspect-ratio of gratings can be improved with a simplified …
Hypothesis Testing And Model Estimation With Dependent Observations In Heterogeneous Sensor Networks, Sima Sobhiyeh
Hypothesis Testing And Model Estimation With Dependent Observations In Heterogeneous Sensor Networks, Sima Sobhiyeh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Advances in microelectronics, communication and signal processing have enabled the development of inexpensive sensors that can be networked to collect vital information from their environment to be used in decision-making and inference. The sensors transmit their data to a central processor which integrates the information from the sensors using a so-called fusion algorithm. Many applications of sensor networks (SNs) involve hypothesis testing or the detection of a phenomenon. Many approaches to data fusion for hypothesis testing assume that, given each hypothesis, the sensors' measurements are conditionally independent. However, since the sensors are densely deployed in practice, their field of views …
