Scale-Up Of An Intensified Process For Rad35 Adenovirus Production Using The Per.C6® Cell Substrate, Alfred Luitjens, Herman Van Herk

Vaccine Technology III

Tuberculosis is the world’s second deadliest infectious disease, with over 9 million new cases diagnosed in 2006. In collaboration with the Aeras Global Tuberculosis Vaccine Foundation, we are developing a recombinant tuberculosis adenovirus based vaccine (rAd35). Currently a series of three Phase I trials are taking place, with the first two studies indicating very promising results, safety and toleration. In November 2008 we started a Phase II study in South Africa. The manufacturing process supporting these clinical studies was developed using the PER.C6® cell substrate. With the productivity of this production process, scale-up to 10,000-liter bioreactor will be required to …

Vaccine Technology III

Mycobacterium bovis BCG is the current vaccine for tuberculosis (TB). However, BCG as it is currently administered shows highly variable efficacy in protecting adults against TB. The natural route of infection of TB is via inhalation of bacilli-containing aerosols and it is postulated that immunization by the natural route of infection may lead to a greater immunity given the fact that the lungs are the primary target of infection. By eliciting both local and systemic immune responses, it is anticipated that an inhaled form of BCG will offer greater protection against pulmonary TB.

Current commercial BCG vaccine preparations are filled …

Dynamic Elutriation Measurement In A Continuously Operated Bubbling Fluidized Bed, Willie Nicol, E. Du Toit, W. De Vos May 2010

Dynamic Elutriation Measurement In A Continuously Operated Bubbling Fluidized Bed, Willie Nicol, E. Du Toit, W. De Vos

The 13th International Conference on Fluidization - New Paradigm in Fluidization Engineering

Measurements were performed using a novel thermal mass flow meter. The dynamic behaviour of the total elutriation rate was monitored from start-up until a steady rate was achieved. It was found that the elutriation rate at unsteady conditions can be as much as 5 times that of the steady value and that it can take more than an hour to reach steady state. This is attributed to the dynamic changes of the fines distribution between the fluidized bed and dipleg. It was further shown that a steady dipleg height does not indicate steady elutriation rates. Using the flow meter to …

Anaerobic Digestion Of Olive Mill Wastewater: Anaerobic Filter Vs. Hybrid, Isabel Paula Marques, Marta Gonçalves, Paulo Freitas Mar 2009

Anaerobic Digestion Of Olive Mill Wastewater: Anaerobic Filter Vs. Hybrid, Isabel Paula Marques, Marta Gonçalves, Paulo Freitas

Bioenergy - II: Fuels and Chemicals from Renewable Resources

Two types of anaerobic digesters - a filter (AF) and a hybrid (H) - are tested in the treatment of original olive mill wastewater (OMW), without any pre-treatment or chemical correction of this substrate. The anaerobic filter is equipped with a packed bed material that fills the entire column of digestion; the hybrid digester results from the combination of anaerobic filter with the up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket and the packed bed only occupies the top section of the column.

OMW is the effluent generated from olive oil industries, which activity has a great economic and social importance in the olive …

Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes Obtained By Fluidized Bed Pyrolysis Of Virgin Or Recycled Plastics, Umberto Arena, Maria Laura Mastellone May 2007

Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes Obtained By Fluidized Bed Pyrolysis Of Virgin Or Recycled Plastics, Umberto Arena, Maria Laura Mastellone

The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering

A new technique for a continuous, mass production of high-quality multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), based on fluidized bed pyrolysis of polymers (virgin or recycled polyolefins and recycled polyethylene terephtalate), is described in detail. The study investigates the role of interactions between the bed material and the polymer particles injected into the reactor as well as that of the reactor temperature. Results are reported in terms of yield and quality of obtained MWCNTs, all characterized by thermogravimetrical analysis and SEM microscopy. The production of MWCNTs, in a relatively large quantity and at a low cost, is demonstrated as technically feasible.

An Analysis Of Pressure Fluctuations In A Cfb Of Heavy Minerals, Adam Luckos, Quinn G. Reynolds , Paul Den Hoed May 2007

An Analysis Of Pressure Fluctuations In A Cfb Of Heavy Minerals, Adam Luckos, Quinn G. Reynolds , Paul Den Hoed

The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering

Pressure fluctuations were measured at high frequencies in a CFB model operated with air at ambient conditions. The model comprises an 80-mm-ID, 5-m-tall riser with a blind-T exit, a cyclone, a 50-mm-ID standpipe, and an L-valve. Tests were conducted with particles of natural rutile (TiO2), a heavy mineral mined from coastal dunes. The particles fall into group B of Geldart’s classification. The solids inventory was kept at 25 kg. The superficial gas velocity ranged from 3 to 6 m/s. The solid circulation flux varied between 10 and 40 kg/m2.s.

Profiles of solid concentrations in the riser are C-shaped. The amplitude …

Tapered Fluidized Beds And The Role Of Fluidization In Mineral Emplacement, Thomas M. Gernon, Mark A. Gilbertson, R. Stephen J. Sparks, Matthew Field

The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering

One of the most prominent features of fluidized beds is their ability to mix and segregate. This is of great importance for many industrial processes, but takes on a particular significance for mineral extraction where a small amount of valuable matter is mixed with a large amount of waste. In this study we consider the occurrence of diamonds in the volcanic rock called “kimberlite”. These are often emplaced (erupted and deposited) in large volcanic pipes commonly referred to as “diatremes” (length scale of the order of a kilometre) with a vent at the bottom through which the minerals were introduced …

Integrated Natural Disaster Risk Assessment: The Socio-Economic Dimension Of Earthquake Risk In The Urban Area, Sibel Kalaycioglu, Helga Rittersberger-Tilic, Kezban Celik, Fatime Günes Jun 2006

Integrated Natural Disaster Risk Assessment: The Socio-Economic Dimension Of Earthquake Risk In The Urban Area, Sibel Kalaycioglu, Helga Rittersberger-Tilic, Kezban Celik, Fatime Günes

Geohazards

Understanding and formulation of risk of a natural disaster requires consideration of every aspect of risk, which can be handled by development of integrated approaches. In such integrated approaches, several discipline’s views are incorporated into risk assessment to see the whole picture. Hence, the risk which can be experienced before and / or after a natural disaster should be a common concern for both natural and social disciplines and should be handled through a interdisciplinary approach. A field research was conducted with 1500 households, selected through stratified random sampling, using the database obtained from the Eskisehir Greater Metropolitan Municipality. Interviews …

Warning System For Natural Threats, Herbert Einstein, R. Sousa Jun 2006

Warning System For Natural Threats, Herbert Einstein, R. Sousa

Geohazards

Warning systems are an essential component of risk management for natural threats. They trigger active and/or passive countermeasures. This paper introduces the need for and use of warning systems through the review of recent major natural disasters (the Sumatra Tsunami, the 2005 Alpine Flood, the 2005 Hurricanes, Katrina and Rita) but also the potential flu pandemic. Positive and negative lessons are drawn from these cases. This is followed by a review of two specific warning systems which together with the preceding cases leads to a list of requirements for warning systems.

These reviews also show that it is desirable to …

A Hydrodynamics Perspective For The 2004 Megatsunami, Costas E. Synolakis Jun 2006

A Hydrodynamics Perspective For The 2004 Megatsunami, Costas E. Synolakis

Geohazards

The megatsunami of 26 December 2004 was the first tsunami with transoceanic impact since the 1960 Great Chilean and 1964 Great Alaskan tsunamis. Because of the distribution of deaths among a large portion of the nations of the world, the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami is the first universal natural disaster of modern times. For the purpose of adequate mitigation of future tsunamis, it is important to understand which factors control most critically the final characteristics of the flooding, namely runup and inundation. Their successful modeling requires not only a credible database of inundation parameters, against which models can be tested …
