A Summative Evaluation Of Flightsafety International's Computer Assisted Instruction Known As "Principles Of Troubleshooting", Willie Don Middlebrooks

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The objective of this experimental research was to ascertain if cognitive skills developed by the "Principles of Troubleshooting" (POT) educational course improved aircraft fault diagnostic ability in aircraft maintenance trainees. Sixty randomly chosen Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) students served as control and experimental subjects with the POT course as the independent variable. Because random assignment was possible, a posttest-only control group design was used. Thirty ERAU maintenance trainees who had received basic and advanced ERAU fault diagnostic training were administered the POT course. A practical test administered to both groups using two tailed t tests for independent means indicated improvement …

An Experimental Study Of Transient Flows In Pulse Combustors, Michael P. Femandes Apr 1995

An Experimental Study Of Transient Flows In Pulse Combustors, Michael P. Femandes

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this investigation was to experimentally characterize a pulse combustor with respect to ambient conditions, pressure amplitudes, wall temperature, combustor geometry and type of centerbody used. The wall temperatures were recorded and the pressure variation was obtained using a sampling rate of 10,000 readings per second. These parameters were recorded for two different tailpipe lengths and centerbodies, and for different ambient conditions. Power spectrums were then obtained from the pressure variations. These spectrums displayed the peak amplitudes and the frequencies at which they occurred. The experiment showed distinct repeatability. It was concluded that combustor displayed the steady, pulsing …

Low Level Alcohol And Its Residual Effect On A Pilot's Threshold For Detecting Angular Motion, Regina G. Bolinger Apr 1995

Low Level Alcohol And Its Residual Effect On A Pilot's Threshold For Detecting Angular Motion, Regina G. Bolinger

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to examine a pilot's sensitivity to a change in angular motion after alcohol ingestion and determine the duration of effect after the time the blood alcohol content (BAC) reached zero. An earlier study determined that a pilot's threshold for detecting angular motion was affected by 30% with low doses of alcohol ingestion. An important question remaining is whether the pilot's sensitivity to angular motion will continue to be significantly affected after the time BAC reaches zero. Twelve instrument-rated pilots flew a partial panel rotating simulator under an in-flight scenario, and thresholds were measured before …

Standardized Checklists Versus Variable Checklist: An Evaluation In A Light Twin Simulator, Veronica Terese Cote

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to determine if a checklist that varied by sequence would enable the pilot to detect potential errors more easily than those who used an unchanging checklist. A flight hour based stratified sample of pilots were randomly divided into two groups and flew a series of eight flights in a light twin aircraft simulator. The control group used the same checklist for each trial; the experimental group used a checklist that covered the same items but varied in sequence for each trial. Faults were introduced in the last two trials. The number of faults discovered …

Numerical Investigation Of Second-Order Effects In A Supersonic Boundary-Layer, Timothy R. Membrino Apr 1995

Numerical Investigation Of Second-Order Effects In A Supersonic Boundary-Layer, Timothy R. Membrino

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Historically, the study of boundary-layer flows has centered on the analysis of the first-order boundary-layer equations and their application to physical flow problems. However, selected “real-world” boundary-layer flows exhibit significant second-order effects which are neglected by the first-order equations. Full Navier-Stokes solutions are often not merited or desired for these flows. Therefore, the second-order boundary-layer equations provide a compromise.

Few validating comparisons have been attempted between second-order boundary-layer theory and experimental or numerical solutions of compressible viscous flows. Experimental simulations to capture second-order effects are difficult since the desired effects are small and can exist simultaneously, resulting in a neutralizing …

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Development in electronic displays and computers have enabled avionics designers to present the pilot with ever increasing amounts of information in greater detail and with more accuracy- However, technological developments have not always brought about enhancement of the pilot's role. Investigating the interaction of cockpit crew members and the vast array of automated systems they control and monitor will contribute to the determination the effect this interface has on the performance of the cockpit team. This study utilized a questionnaire to determine if the opinions of the flight crew suggested performance is impacted negatively by automation. There was no significant …

Nonlinear Analysis Of Composite Beams Under Random Excitations, Snorri Gudmundsson Mar 1995

Nonlinear Analysis Of Composite Beams Under Random Excitations, Snorri Gudmundsson

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The vibration responses of three unsymmetrically laminated beams, that are excited with a Gaussian random forcing function, are studied in this thesis. The beams are analyzed nonlinearly and compared to linear results, indicating some important corrections. The solution procedure begins with the derivation of the general equation of motion using Galerkin's method. Then, two approaches are taken in the solution. First, the equation of motion is attacked directly employing a real time Runge-Kutta numerical analysis. Second, the method of equivalent linearization is used. The thesis finds the results from the two approaches to be in a close agreement, although some …

This thesis evaluates the Canada - Florida commercial air passenger market and explains fluctuations in the demand for air passenger service based on an econometric modeling process. Canada - Florida commercial air passenger traffic is segmented into those passengers flying on scheduled air services and those travelling on chartered air services. Two separate multiple regression equations are constructed to address the two segments of the Canada - Florida market. Both equations are formulated utilizing the same three independent variables. It was expected that the three chosen independent variables, Canadian GDP, a ratio of chartered air fare levels by scheduled air …

A Simulation Study Of Pilots' Ability To Perceive Angular Motion Under The Influence Of Alcohol, Wali N. Mughni Aug 1994

A Simulation Study Of Pilots' Ability To Perceive Angular Motion Under The Influence Of Alcohol, Wali N. Mughni

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The study consisted of experimental research to determine the effect of alcohol on the pilots’ ability to perceive angular motion. It was hypothesized that in the absence of visual cues, pilots’ thresholds of perceiving a change in angular motion is adversely affected by alcohol in the blood, thereby increasing the potential to enter a state of spatial disorientation. The experiments were designed to simulate a real time in-flight scenario, in a rotating flight simulator, where angular accelerations could be controlled and pilots’ thresholds of perceiving a change in angular motion could be measured. The study revealed that the subjects registered …

Numerical Analysis Of The Viscous Flow In A Supersonic Diffuser, Sa'ed A'Rafat Jul 1994

Numerical Analysis Of The Viscous Flow In A Supersonic Diffuser, Sa'ed A'Rafat

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The goal of a diffuser is to transform kinetic energy into potential energy with minimum losses in total pressure. Existing supersonic diffusers are based on compression through shock waves. This process is inherently inefficient because of the large losses caused by the shocks. We investigate by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) the viscous flow in a supersonic diffuser designed by means of inviscid theory to produce a shock-free isentropic compression. The design is based on the combination of elementary flows. Two simple wave regions connected by a sink flow are used to take a uniform supersonic flow at one …

Running With The Pack: Jit & Automation For Small Manufacturers, Thomas E. Phillips, John R. Ledgerwood Jun 1994

Running With The Pack: Jit & Automation For Small Manufacturers, Thomas E. Phillips, John R. Ledgerwood

Publications

While both just in time (JIT) concepts and automation programs have been widely implemented and highly successful in large manufacturing companies, many smaller manufacturing companies have wondered whether it would be economically feasible to utilize these same techniques and derive these same benefits. When JIT is adopted by small manufacturers, it provides them with advantages over traditional manufacturing systems, such as lower cost, quality improvements, higher productivity, and less working capital tied up in inventory. Small US manufacturers must understand the basic principles and philosophy of JIT and update their production equipment if they are to be competitive in today's …

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this thesis is to study the nonlinear analysis of antisymmetrically laminated composite beams including shear deformation subjected to harmonic excitation, using a 20-degree of freedom finite element beam. The beam has 10 degrees of freedom at each node: The axial displacements, the transverse deflection due to bending and transverse shear, the twisting angle, the in-plane shear rotation, and their derivatives along the axial direction. In this study, the effect of different parameters such as damping, shear deformation and different edge conditions on the steady-state frequency-responce will be investigated. The analysis was based on the use of finite …

Nonlinear Forced Vibration Of An Unsymmetrically Laminated Composite Beam, Marie Helene Pompei May 1994

Nonlinear Forced Vibration Of An Unsymmetrically Laminated Composite Beam, Marie Helene Pompei

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this thesis is to study the nonlinear forced vibration of an unsymmetrically laminated composite beam. Two cases are considered: unsymmetrical angle-ply and unsymmetrical cross-ply composite beams. The nonlinear governing partial differential equations of motion are obtained by taking into account the von-Karman geometrical nonlinearity. These equations are transformed into nonlinear ODE (Ordinary Differential Equations) by means of the Galerkin method. For both cases the forced Duffing equation was obtained. It is to be noted that only for the unsymmetrical cross-ply laminate simply-supported case are both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities present. The resulting equations for both cases are …

Upon Closer Inspection...U.S. Naval Aviation Mishaps 1977-1992, Scott A. Shappell, Douglas A. Wiegmann Apr 1994

Upon Closer Inspection...U.S. Naval Aviation Mishaps 1977-1992, Scott A. Shappell, Douglas A. Wiegmann

Publications

The U.S. Navy/Marine Corps Class A flight/flight-related mishap rate has declined markedly since 1953. However, analysis of all Class A, B, and C naval aviation mishaps between January 1977 and December 1992 reveals that mishaps attributable to human factors have declined at a slower rate than those attributable to mechanical/environmental factors. Upon closer inspection of the data, marked differences were evident between single-piloted and dual-piloted aircraft. Global trends were primarily a function of single-piloted aircraft, particularly when phase of flight and time of day that a mishap occurred are considered. Previously reported improvement in aviation safety may be biased by …

A Feasibility Study Of A Private Entity Competing With Fbos For Airline Ground Handling Contracts, Carlos A. Vergas

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This thesis investigates whether a private entity can compete with fixed base operators (FBOs) for airline ground handling contracts. Separating the research method into five phases, the author first conducts a need analysis. Then, the author dissects the structure of existing ground handling contracts. Thirdly, the average service charges presently in place are tabulated. Fourthly, a financial analysis is performed including the calculation of the break-even point at a profit. Finally, a model of ground handling operation is simulated using an existing air carrier’s ground handling contract.
