Quantifying The Cognitive, Symptomatic And Neuroendocrine Impact Of The Coriolis Illusion; A Countermeasure For Motion Sickness, Catherine Grandizio Jul 2007

Quantifying The Cognitive, Symptomatic And Neuroendocrine Impact Of The Coriolis Illusion; A Countermeasure For Motion Sickness, Catherine Grandizio

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

When pilots are unable to accurately perceive the position and motion of their bodies, they are spatially disoriented. Spatial disorientation is often induced by aviation illusions, and its consequences include dizziness, confusion, nausea and fatigue. The present research evaluated the severity of cognitive, neuroendocrine and subjective symptoms of the Coriolis illusion, induced by a spatial disorientation flight training device. Also, the research examined the effectiveness of a mild, ground-based countermeasure, similar to the Coriolis illusion, in reducing the occurrence and severity of symptoms. In the early stages of data analysis, there appeared to be a significant impact of the Coriolis …

Microthruster Experimental Analysis, Amy Denise Richards Jul 2007

Microthruster Experimental Analysis, Amy Denise Richards

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to design an experimental apparatus that could accurately test and measure the thrust efficiency of conical shaped microthrusters with varying divergence half angles. The experimental apparatus measured the thrust of micronozzles for various feed pressures in vacuum (to duplicate in space operation) as well as ambient. Calibration experiments confirmed the force measurement accuracy of the setup while gas thrust experiments were used to help determine the most efficient divergence half angle. Thrust results were compared to findings from two separate scientific studies that sought to optimize microthruster nozzles using CFD software.

The most prominent of these enhancements is the integration (in real-time) of the Power & Energy System Integration Lab (P&E SIL) with a motion base simulator by means of a “long haul” connection over the Internet (a geographical distance of …

Numerical Simulation Of Waves And Fronts In Inhomogeneous Solids, A. Berezovski, M. Berezovski, J. Engelbrecht, G. A. Maugin Jun 2007

Numerical Simulation Of Waves And Fronts In Inhomogeneous Solids, A. Berezovski, M. Berezovski, J. Engelbrecht, G. A. Maugin

Publications

Dynamic response of inhomogeneous materials exhibits new effects, which often do not exist in homogeneous media. It is quite natural that most of studies of wave and front propagation in inhomogeneous materials are associated with numerical simulations. To develop a numerical algorithm and to perform the numerical simulations of moving fronts we need to formulate a kinetic law of progress relating the driving force and the velocity of the discontinuity. The velocity of discontinuity is determined by means of the non-equilibrium jump relations at the front. The obtained numerical method generalizes the wave-propagation algorithm to the case of moving discontinuities …

Voluntary And Confidential Reporting Systems As A Means Of Reducing The Accident Rate In Shadow 200 Flight Operations, William Lawrence Jagnow May 2007

Voluntary And Confidential Reporting Systems As A Means Of Reducing The Accident Rate In Shadow 200 Flight Operations, William Lawrence Jagnow

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Although effective, the United States Army's Shadow 200 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle has suffered an unacceptably high accident rate. Errors committed by operators have significantly contributed to this accident rate. The voluntary and confidential Aviation Safety Reporting System and Aviation Safety Action Program have been successful in identifying and addressing errors committed by air carrier pilots. This study has explored the implementation of voluntary and confidential reporting systems in Shadow 200 flight operations. Mixed methods research combined quantitative survey data and qualitative interview data as a means of determining attitudes relevant to the implementation of such systems. Identified deficiencies included: (a) …

Prediction Of Fatigue Life In 7075-T6 Aluminum From Neural Network Analysis Of Acoustic Emission Data, Nicholas S. Spivey May 2007

Prediction Of Fatigue Life In 7075-T6 Aluminum From Neural Network Analysis Of Acoustic Emission Data, Nicholas S. Spivey

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Through the use of an acoustic emission (AE) data acquisition system, a Kohonen self-organizing map, and a back-propagation neural network, AE data from 7075-T6 aluminum specimens were used to classify failure mechanisms and predict the number of fatigue cycles to failure. AE waveforms were captured from 40 notched tensile specimens during the low-cycle fatiguing process. A Kohonen self-organizing map and initial data filters were used to classify the data into two distinct failure mechanisms, plane strain and plane stress fracture, plus a third less prevalent mechanism. These results were employed to construct a back-propagation neural network to predict the number …

The Effect Of Display Design On Pilot Performance In Controlled Flight Into Terrain Scenarios, Jeremy Charles Smith May 2007

The Effect Of Display Design On Pilot Performance In Controlled Flight Into Terrain Scenarios, Jeremy Charles Smith

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

New technologies are being developed to prevent the continuing problem of Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) accidents. One such technology, the Synthetic Vision System, seems to hold the solution. While it is readily adapted to the commercial aviation instrument environment, it may not be intuitive enough for the General Aviation private pilot with minimal instrument training. This experiment attempted to examine how pilots of every experience level use and interpret the depiction of synthetic terrain to recognize and avoid potential CFIT situations. The outcome of CFIT was measured against pilot experience and display condition.

Towards Redaction Of Digital Information From Electronic Devices, Gavin W. Manes, Lance Watson, David Greer, Alex Barclay, John Hale

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

In the discovery portion of court proceedings, it is necessary to produce information to opposing counsel. Traditionally, this information is in paper form with all privileged information removed. Increasingly, the information requested during discovery exists in digital form and savvy counsel is requesting direct access to the original digital source: a broad spectrum of additional digital information can be often be extracted using digital forensics. This paper describes the major problems which must be solved to redact digital information from electronic devices. The primary hurdle facing digital redaction is the lack of a rational process for systematically handling encoded, encrypted, …

Defending Against Insider Use Of Digital Steganography, James E. Wingate, Glenn D. Watt, Marc Kurtz, Chad W. Davis, Robert Lipscomb Apr 2007

Defending Against Insider Use Of Digital Steganography, James E. Wingate, Glenn D. Watt, Marc Kurtz, Chad W. Davis, Robert Lipscomb

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The trusted insider is among the most harmful and difficult to detect threats to information security, according to the Federal Plan for Information Assurance and Cyber Security Research and Development released in April 2006. By default, employees become trusted insiders when granted the set of privileges needed to do their jobs, which typically includes access to the Internet. It is generally presumed the insiders are loyally working to achieve the organization’s goals and objectives and would not abuse the privileges given to them. However, some insiders will inevitably abuse some of their privileges. For example, a trusted insider might abuse …

Investigating Information Structure Of Phishing Emails Based On Persuasive Communication Perspective, Ki Jung Lee, Il-Yeol Song Apr 2007

Investigating Information Structure Of Phishing Emails Based On Persuasive Communication Perspective, Ki Jung Lee, Il-Yeol Song

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Current approaches of phishing filters depend on classifying messages based on textually discernable features such as IP-based URLs or domain names as those features that can be easily extracted from a given phishing message. However, in the same sense, those easily perceptible features can be easily manipulated by sophisticated phishers. Therefore, it is important that universal patterns of phishing messages should be identified for feature extraction to serve as a basis for text classification. In this paper, we demonstrate that user perception regarding phishing message can be identified in central and peripheral routes of information processing. We also present a …

Monitoring And Surveillance In The Workplace: Lessons Learnt? – Investigating The International Legal Position, Verine Etsebeth Apr 2007

Monitoring And Surveillance In The Workplace: Lessons Learnt? – Investigating The International Legal Position, Verine Etsebeth

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

When considering the legal implications of monitoring and surveillance in the workplace, the question may be asked why companies deploy computer surveillance and monitoring in the first place. Several reasons may be put forward to justify why more than 80% of all major American firms monitor employee e-mails and Internet usage. However, what most companies forget is the fact that the absence or presence of monitoring and surveillance activities in a company holds serious legal consequences for companies. From the discussion in this paper it will become apparent that there is a vast difference in how most countries approach this …

The Gap Between Theory And Practice In Digital Forensics, Joseph C. Sremack Apr 2007

The Gap Between Theory And Practice In Digital Forensics, Joseph C. Sremack

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Digital forensics is a young field that is being defined by the reactive nature of its development – in terms of both research and practice. As technology develops, digital forensics is forced to react and adapt. The rapid development of technology and the lack of an established theoretical foundation has led to a disconnect between the theory and practice of digital forensics. While the base theoretical issues are being worked on by researchers, practitioners are dealing with entirely new sets of issues. The complexity of investigations is increasing, and anti-forensics techniques are advancing as well. The disconnect will be resolved …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Computer Mediated Communications On Cyberstalking Severity, Stephen D. Barnes, David P. Biros Apr 2007

An Exploratory Analysis Of Computer Mediated Communications On Cyberstalking Severity, Stephen D. Barnes, David P. Biros

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The interaction between disjunctive interpersonal relationships, those where the parties to the relationship disagree on the goals of the relationship, and the use of computer mediated communications channels is a relatively unexplored domain. Bargh (2002) suggests that CMC channels can amplify the development of interpersonal relationships, and notes that the effect is not constant across communications activities. This proposal suggests a line of research that explores the interaction between computer mediated communications (CMC) and stalking, which is a common form of disjunctive relationships. Field data from cyberstalking cases will be used to look at the effects of CMC channels on …

Guideline Model For Digital Forensic Investigation, Salma Abdalla, Sherif Hazem, Sherif Hashem Apr 2007

Guideline Model For Digital Forensic Investigation, Salma Abdalla, Sherif Hazem, Sherif Hashem

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This paper proposes a detailed guideline model for digital forensics; the proposed model consists of five main phases, Preparation phase, Physical Forensics and Investigation Phase, Digital Forensics Phase, Reporting and Presentation Phase, and Closure Phase.

Most of the existing models in this field do not cover all aspects of digital forensic investigations, as they focus mainly on the processing of digital evidence or on the legal points. Although they gave good information to base on it a guide, but they are not detailed enough to describe fully the investigative process in a way that can be used by investigators during …

New Federal Rules And Digital Evidence, Gavin W. Manes, Elizabeth Downing, Lance Watson, Christopher Thrutchley Apr 2007

New Federal Rules And Digital Evidence, Gavin W. Manes, Elizabeth Downing, Lance Watson, Christopher Thrutchley

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The newly revised Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and developments under the Federal Rules of Evidence have a significant impact on the use, collection, and treatment of digital evidence for legal proceedings. The Rules now formally grant electronic documents and digital evidence the same status as paper and other forms of tangible evidence. As a result, the availability and proper preservation of potentially relevant electronic evidence must be considered, at the very latest, in the preliminary stages of litigation and, at the earliest, as soon as litigation is reasonably anticipated. It is important for professionals to be familiar with the …

The General Digital Forensics Model, Steven Rigby, Marcus K. Rogers Apr 2007

The General Digital Forensics Model, Steven Rigby, Marcus K. Rogers

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The lack of a graphical representation of all of the principles, processes, and phases necessary to carry out an digital forensic investigation is a key inhibitor to effective education in this newly emerging field of study. Many digital forensic models have been suggested for this purpose but they lack explanatory power as they are merely a collection of lists or one-dimensional figures. This paper presents a new multi-dimensional model, the General Digital Forensics Model (GDFM), that shows the relationships and inter-connectedness of the principles and processes needed within the domain of digital forensics.

The Evolution Of Internet Legal Regulation In Addressing Crime And Terrorism, Murdoch Watney Apr 2007

The Evolution Of Internet Legal Regulation In Addressing Crime And Terrorism, Murdoch Watney

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Internet regulation has evolved from self-regulation to the criminalization of conduct to state control of information available, accessed and submitted. Criticism has been leveled at the different forms of state control and the methods employed to enforce state control. After the terrorist attack on the USA on 11 September 2001, governments justify Internet state control as a law enforcement and national security tool against the abuse and misuse of the Internet for the commission of serious crimes, such as phishing, child pornography; terrorism and copyright infringement. Some Internet users and civil rights groups perceive state control as an abomination which …

Fabrication And Compressive Behavior Of Corrugated Aramid-Epoxy Cellular Solids, Jeffrey Arthur Schneider Apr 2007

Fabrication And Compressive Behavior Of Corrugated Aramid-Epoxy Cellular Solids, Jeffrey Arthur Schneider

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Cellular solids are materials whose base material does not always occupy the entire solid fraction available. A number of cellular solids can provide blast protection and absorb impact energy, but few perform well resisting blunt object (ballistic) penetration. In this thesis, a method is proposed for fabricating cellular solids from aramid-epoxy composites that can absorb impact energy and resist blunt object penetration. The aramid-epoxy samples were fabricated using wet-layup techniques, with two different styles of Kevlar 49 woven fabric in a variety of orientations. Test sample density ranged from 0.08 0.23 g/cm3. Different lamination orientations, assembly techniques, and bonding adhesives …

Investigation Of Magnetic Field Profile Effects In Hall Thrusters, Oren Kornberg Apr 2007

Investigation Of Magnetic Field Profile Effects In Hall Thrusters, Oren Kornberg

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to show the relationship of different magnetic field profiles to the acceleration region length of a Hall thruster. The general transport equations were simplified and solved using a one-dimensional analysis. Some of the model assumptions include quasineutrality, Maxwellian electrons, and negligible thruster wall effects. The solved equation kept magnetic field as an input to the model for the analysis. The magnetic field was altered by changing the shape through the thruster, while keeping the maximum point fixed, and by shifting the profile, while keeping the shape fixed. Results indicate a strong correlation between the …

Derivation And Application Of A Conserved Orbital Energy For The Inverted Pendulum Bipedal Walking Model, Jerry E. Pratt, Sergey V. Drakunov Apr 2007

Derivation And Application Of A Conserved Orbital Energy For The Inverted Pendulum Bipedal Walking Model, Jerry E. Pratt, Sergey V. Drakunov

Publications

We present an analysis of a point mass, point foot, planar inverted pendulum model for bipedal walking. Using this model, we derive expressions for a conserved quantity, the “Orbital Energy”, given a smooth Center of Mass trajectory. Given a closed form Center of Mass Trajectory, the equation for the Orbital Energy is a closed form expression except for an integral term, which we show to be the first moment of area under the Center of Mass path. Hence, given a Center of Mass trajectory, it is straightforward and computationally simple to compute phase portraits for the system. In fact, for …

Nanosecond Near-Spinodal Homogeneous Boiling Of Water Superheated By Pulsed Co/Sub 2/ Laser, Sergey I. Kudryashov, Kevin Lyon, Susan D. Allen Mar 2007

Nanosecond Near-Spinodal Homogeneous Boiling Of Water Superheated By Pulsed Co/Sub 2/ Laser, Sergey I. Kudryashov, Kevin Lyon, Susan D. Allen

Mechanical Engineering - Daytona Beach

The fast boiling dynamics of superheated surface layers of bulk water cavitating under near-spinodal conditions during nanosecond C O2 laser heating pulses was studied using contact broad-band photoacoustic spectroscopy. Characteristic pressure-tension cycles recorded by an acoustic transducer at different incident laser fluences represent (a) weak random oscillations of transient nanometer-sized near-critical bubbles-precursors and (b) well-defined stimulated oscillations of micron-sized supercritical bubbles and their submicrosecond coalescence products. These findings provide an important insight into basic thermodynamic parameters, spatial and temporal scales of bubble nucleation during explosive liquid/vapor transformations in absorbing liquids ablated by short laser pulses in the thermal confinement regime. …

Distance Learning For Instrument Flight: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Virtual Mentor, Andrew S. Mendolia Jan 2007

Distance Learning For Instrument Flight: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Virtual Mentor, Andrew S. Mendolia

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

PC-based flight simulators are sometimes used as an alternative to traditional forms of instrument training. This type of training typically requires an instructor to be present with the student in order to facilitate training. Flight instructors play many important roles in aviation training, one of which is the role of mentor. The premise of this study was to examine the use of synchronous web-based instruction for instrument flight via Microsoft Flight Simulator’s (10.0) “shared-cockpit” feature, where the instructors serves as a mentor from a distance. The results indicate that web-based instruction is no more effective than practice without instruction. Although …

Control System Design And Simulation Of Spacecraft Formations Via Virtual Formation Approach, Pavan Donepudi Jan 2007

Control System Design And Simulation Of Spacecraft Formations Via Virtual Formation Approach, Pavan Donepudi

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The problem of formation control of multiple spacecraft using the virtual structure approach is studied. The thesis first summarizes the progress made in the area of spacecraft formation control and then provides an overview of the virtual structure method. Modifying earlier established control design techniques, new feedback laws are constructed to control both the rotational and translational motion of a group of spacecraft. Several computer simulations are performed to illustrate the effectiveness of the modified control laws. The ephemeris and attitude data files generated via Matlab are exported to Satellite Tool Kit (STK) to create 3D animations. Various formation scenarios …
