Experimental Investigation Of The Long-Term Bending Deflection And Creep Performance Of Cross-Laminated Timber (Clt), Aaron Desantis
Experimental Investigation Of The Long-Term Bending Deflection And Creep Performance Of Cross-Laminated Timber (Clt), Aaron Desantis
All Theses
Rising popularity in mass timber construction for residential and commercial projects has escalated the need to develop and increase understanding of mass timber products both from a strength and serviceability perspective. For cross-laminated timber (CLT) there is a significant lack of research on the creep characteristics also known as long-term deflection behavior. Creep is particularly important for products such as CLT that are used for floors with longer spans. Full-scale creep testing was conducted using 5-ply CLT panels over the course of 6 months in a controlled environment under dry service condition. Testing resulted in average final deflections 1.73 times …

The Effect Of Package Types On Fresh Peaches In The Direct-To-Consumer Distribution Environment, Brennan Lytle
All Theses
The direct-to-consumer (DTC) shipping mode presents new opportunity for fresh peach sales in North America where demand over the past four decades has steadily declined. The hazards in this distribution mode are severe, and fresh peaches are fragile emphasizing the need for proper protection. A full analysis that not only encompasses the effects of the direct-to-consumer distribution environment, but also incorporates analyses of the environmental and economic impact of the packages utilized for transit of peaches is necessary. In this study, we use the metrics of peach grade, firmness, soluble solids concentration, and percent softness before and after the distribution …
In Vitro And In Vivo Diabetic Models For Assessment Of Tissue Engineered Vascular Grafts, Juan Carlos Carrillo Garcia
In Vitro And In Vivo Diabetic Models For Assessment Of Tissue Engineered Vascular Grafts, Juan Carlos Carrillo Garcia
All Dissertations
Diabetes has become one of the leading causes of lower-limb loss worldwide. Every 30 seconds, a person loses a limb due to diabetic-related vascular complications. About one-third of patients needing lower-limb bypass surgery have debilitated autologous vessels unsuitable for use, and no other good long-term options are available. These detrimental effects on the vasculature are caused mainly by the hyperglycemic and hyperlipidemic conditions derived from diabetes. Under these conditions, an increase in advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and reactive oxygen species leads to irreversible crosslinks of extracellular matrix proteins, accelerating vascular pathology through vascular stiffening, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, atherosclerosis, fibrosis, …
Accurate Orientation Control Of Tendon Driven Continuum Robots That Exhibit Elasticity, Manu Srivastava
Accurate Orientation Control Of Tendon Driven Continuum Robots That Exhibit Elasticity, Manu Srivastava
All Dissertations
This dissertation makes new contributions to the modeling and implementation of Tendon Driven Continuum Robots (TDCRs). Specifically, motivated by 3D printing of concrete using a continuum hose robot in construction applications, we focus on TDCRs featuring compliance in the robot backbone and actuating tendons, e.g. surgical robots/endoscopes/catheters with tendon actuation. We expand previous mechanics-based models to show how and why such compliance significantly restricts performance when traditional kinematics-based planning and control techniques are applied.
The main contribution of this work is a new Elasticity Compensation(EC) model that explains why the ad hoc approach of preloading/pretensioning the tendons compensates for compliance …
Energy-Aware Coordination Of Automated Vehicles, Nathan Goulet
Energy-Aware Coordination Of Automated Vehicles, Nathan Goulet
All Dissertations
Energy is an inherently limited resource for two reasons: the sources utilized to obtain energy are limited; and the methods used most often to convert energy also generate pollutants that the planet has a limited capacity to absorb or compensate for without adverse effects. Efficiently utilizing energy is, therefore, an important topic. As around 16% of the energy consumed in the United States is by light vehicles, a significant impact can be made if vehicle energy consumption is reduced. The advent of connected and automated vehicles offers unprecedented opportunities to optimize their behavior with respect to energy consumption through trajectory …

The convenience of commercially available CFD software and advancements made in computing hardware have been the impetus behind this growing popularity. However, obtaining accurate results using these software packages is not a trivial process and requires an in-depth understanding of the underlying numerical methodology and sub models for various physical phenomena. Specific to the ICEs, CFD simulation often entails the use of models for detailed chemistry and combustion, …
Improved Vehicle-Bridge Interaction Modeling And Automation Of Bridge System Identification Techniques, Omar Abuodeh
Improved Vehicle-Bridge Interaction Modeling And Automation Of Bridge System Identification Techniques, Omar Abuodeh
All Dissertations
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recognizes the necessity for cost-effective and practical system identification (SI) techniques within structural health monitoring (SHM) frameworks for asset management applications. Indirect health monitoring (IHM), a promising SHM approach, utilizes accelerometer-equipped vehicles to measure bridge modal properties (e.g., natural frequencies, damping ratios, mode shapes) through bridge vibration data to assess the bridge's condition. However, engineers and researchers often encounter noise from road roughness, environmental factors, and vehicular components in collected vehicle signals. This noise contaminates the vehicle signal with spurious modes corresponding to stochastic frequencies, impacting damage monitoring assessments. Thus, an efficient and reliable SI …

All Dissertations
Improving patient safety in anesthesia has proven to be an arduous and challenging task. Despite the many strategies and interventions to improve patient safety that have been employed, patient harm in anesthesia remains a problem. The struggle to reduce patient harm in anesthesia is both attributable to and representative of the complexity of the anesthesia system. In navigating this complex system, anesthesia providers have different approaches to how they accomplish their work, which results in variability in anesthesia practice. This variability provides an immense challenge to designing and implementing efforts to improve patient safety, as rigid interventions are often met …

The heterogeneous structure is essential to obtain excellent performance in many ceramics or glass devices/components. Conventional fabrication on these heterogeneous structure composites usually requires multiple treatments, specific molds for certain structures, and post-processing to get desired structure and properties. Therefore, the flexibility of the structure is limited, and a long fabrication time is required.
Integrated additive/subtractive manufacturing and laser-based technologies have caught researchers` attention in ceramics/glass heterogeneous structure fabrication. This is because the integration of additive manufacturing (AM) with subtractive manufacturing (SM) not only maintained the advantages of AM in rapid prototyping, design complexity, and reduced material wastage but also …
Essays On Integer Programming Approaches To Analyze Equilibrium Solutions In Games, Lucky Cho
Essays On Integer Programming Approaches To Analyze Equilibrium Solutions In Games, Lucky Cho
All Dissertations
In this dissertation, we present three applications of integer programming to analyze non-cooperative games. In a non-cooperative game, players of the game act selfishly and choose the best response given every other player's decision. The game reaches a Nash equilibrium when no player can benefit by changing its decisions. Our goal is to create an integer program that can identify these Nash equilibriums by modeling the best response of the game's players in the constraints. We prove a one-to-one correspondence between the game's Nash equilibrium and the feasible solution of a corresponding integer program. The one-to-one correspondence allows us to …
Extensional Flows Of Polymer Solutions In Planar Microchannels, Mahmud Kamal Raihan
Extensional Flows Of Polymer Solutions In Planar Microchannels, Mahmud Kamal Raihan
All Dissertations
Non-Newtonian fluids such as polymer solutions often flow under microscale extensional conditions in many natural and engineering flow fields such as in microfluidic chips, porous rocks, biological membranes and filters, printheads in additive manufacturing, etc. The changing cross sectional areas of the internal flow passages therein exert additional extension on the flow along with the shearing. Numerous studies have been dedicated to understanding the extensional flows of polymer solutions over the years. However, most of these studies only focused on flexible polymers exhibiting elasticity in their macroscopic rheology, whereas rigid polymers that portray shear-thinning but often elude elasticity in the …
Activated Carbon Synthesis From Lignin-Rich Byproduct Streams Of Biorefineries, Chengjun Wu
Activated Carbon Synthesis From Lignin-Rich Byproduct Streams Of Biorefineries, Chengjun Wu
All Dissertations
Over the past decade, the production of biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass has steadily increased to offset the use of fuels from petroleum. To make biofuels cost-competitive, it is necessary to add value to the “ligno-” components (up to 30% by mass) of the biomass. Instead of just burning it for heat and electricity generation, direct conversion of lignin carbon into a product provides a complementary path to carbon capture, promoting a more environmentally conscious approach. However, the utilization of these lignin-rich byproduct streams, which are separated from the biofuels production, for industrial products can be challenging. The use of specific …

Improving Lignin Recovery From Paper Mill And Biorefinery Waste Streams Via Liquid-Phase Splitting, Carter Fitzgerald
All Dissertations
Lignin is an abundant biopolymer with significant promise due to its aromaticity. It has been targeted as a replacement for a number of petroleum-based products including adhesives, coatings, polyurethane foams, activated carbon, and carbon fibers. However, commercially available bulk lignins are too polydisperse, and contain too many residual metals from the pulping process that are detrimental to the properties of the final product.
The Sequential Liquid-lignin Recovery and Purification (SLRP) process was developed by Michael Lake and John Blackburn, in collaboration with Clemson, with the intention of creating a continuous method for recovering lignin from paper-mill black liquors. Thies and …

Hurricanes are a significant natural hazard, which cause significant damage and financial losses in the coastal areas of the United States almost every year. For example, the devastating nature of North Atlantic Ocean (NAO) storms can easily be understood from the 2005 Hurricane Katrina, which was the most damaging NAO storm in modern history, causing more than 1,800 deaths and a financial loss of at least 161.3 billion USD. It has been found that the formations of hurricanes depend heavily on climate conditions, which implies a direct relationship between the changes in climate extremes and the occurrences of hurricanes or …
Design Of Bamboo Reinforced Concrete Beams Considering Variability In Tensile Strength Of Bamboo, Bibek Bhardwaj, Michael Stoner, Weichiang Pang
Design Of Bamboo Reinforced Concrete Beams Considering Variability In Tensile Strength Of Bamboo, Bibek Bhardwaj, Michael Stoner, Weichiang Pang
Publications
In recent years, the price of steel has soared, making steel reinforcement in concrete structures unaffordable for households in low-income countries. Seismic activities in low-income households, particularly those in developing countries, pose a significant threat to life and property to unreinforced concrete structures. The application of bamboo as an alternative to steel in reinforced concrete is still in its early stages of development. Unlike steel, bamboo is a natural material, and its structural properties vary greatly based on species, location, age, and geometric properties. Thus, the design of bamboo-reinforced concrete involves more uncertainties than steel-reinforced concrete. This research investigates the …

The automotive industry has witnessed a massive shift in terms of materials used, ranging from being a metallic heavyweight in the 1950s to employing a hybrid sandwich of multiple material systems. This apparent shift can be attributed to achieving improvements in performance, safety and fuel efficiency, along with responding to the various environmental regulations imposed by different governments. The recent advocacy of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard of 54.5 MPG by 2025 by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions [1] has spurred the sector at large towards the use of lightweight materials.

Composites 4.0 is the implementation of Industry 4.0 concepts to plastics and composites manufacturing with the goal to overcome the complexities associated with these materials. Due to very complex process-structure-property relationships associated with plastics and composites, a wide range of process parameters need to be tracked and monitored. Furthermore, these parameters are often affected by the tool and machinery, human intervention and variability and should thus, be monitored by integrating intelligence and connectivity in manufacturing systems. Retrofitting legacy manufacturing systems with modern sensing and control systems is emerging as one of the more cost-effective approaches as it circumvents the substantial …
Understanding The Effect Of Nanointerfaces On Nanostructure And Mechanical Properties Of Semicrystalline Polymers Using Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamic Simulations, Nayoung Kim
Honors College Theses
Polymer crystallization is a classical problem of polymer research. Many synthetic and natural polymers take the semi-crystalline form. Crystallization of polymers is a complex process associated with the partial alignment of their molecular chains. The final physical properties of semicrystalline polymers are determined by the degree of crystallinity and the size and orientation of the crystallites (nano- to micro-sized crystalline regions). Although it has been studied for many years, we still lack a fundamental understanding of the types of factors that influence the semicrystalline structure and how the structure affects the final properties. It is difficult because crystalline polymers are …

Enabling High Throughput And Reliable Low Latency Communication Over Vehicular Mobility In Next-Generation Cellular Networks, Snigdhaswin Kar
All Dissertations
The fifth-generation (5G) networks and beyond need paradigm shifts to realize the exponentially increasing demands of next-generation services for high throughputs, low latencies, and reliable communication under various mobility scenarios. However, these promising features have critical gaps that need to be filled before they can be fully implemented for mobile applications in complex environments like smart cities. Although the sub-6 GHz bands can provide reliable and larger coverage, they cannot provide high data rates with low latencies due to a scarcity of spectrum available in these bands. Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is a key enabler for a significant increase in …

Assesment Of Structure, Function, And Microevolutionary Dynamics Of Extrachromosomal Circular Dna In Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Dylan Chitwood
All Dissertations
Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell lines are among the most popular expression hosts used in biopharmaceutical manufacturing due to relative ease of culture, capacity to perform human-like post-translational modifications, and non-susceptibility to viruses. However, the intrinsic plasticity of the CHO genome can lead to undesired genetic rearrangements, phenotypic shifts, reduced product quality, and early culture termination that prevents continuous biomanufacturing. A characteristic of plastic and unstable genomes that is poorly understood in CHO cells is extrachromosomal circular DNA (eccDNA). EccDNAs are focal amplifications of the genome that reside in the extranuclear space. These plasmid-like entities are structurally complex and are …
