The goal of this project was to create a unique type of guitar distortion effects pedal. The initial plan was to use a Hilbert Transformer, also called a Phase Splitter, to produce a vibrato type distortion. Later during the circuit design phase, it appeared that a tremolo effect could be easily implemented in addition to the vibrato. Both the tremolo and vibrato effects were implemented in the final design. Although there are many different types of vibrato and tremolo pedals already in existence, it does not appear that any current designs use a Hilbert Transformer or phase splitter. This final year project combines hardware and software components to create an alcohol breathalyzer that is compatible with the iPhone. The final design of the circuit and the iPhone application is original and combines multiple components to create the final product. The purpose of this project is to build a DC-DC converter for the wall outlet of the DC House. This report focuses on the development of the DC -DC converter, and explains the design process as well as summarize the final results. The proposed system using the Buck or Step Down topology takes input voltage of 48V and output 12V at 100W. Results show the ability of the converter to fulfill such tasks while maintaining efficiency about 90% at all load.

The space environment possesses numerous unique and unusual attributes, creating challenges that must be considered in order to accomplish a successful space mission. Two of the detrimental aspects of the space environment include Atomic Oxygen, AO, and Ultraviolet, UV, radiation. UV radiation becomes more severe in space as there is no atmosphere to attenuate incoming photons, thereby exposing spacecraft to radiation that never reaches the surface of the Earth. A new detection reagent that could possibly augment or replace antibodies research and diagnosis methods are aptamers. Aptamers are ssDNA, RNA or polypeptide constructs that function like active antibodies. Antibodies and aptamers both specifically bind to selected target molecules, and as such they enable the detection or targeting of the presence or absence of a specific antigen.

In order to ensure that ssDNA aptamers perform similarly to antibodies, anti-VEGF-A polyclonal antibody and anti-VEGF-A ssDNA aptamer were evaluated against vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) using Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR). Histology performed by Cal Poly students for research projects and labs are currently performed by hand using a dipping technique. This technique is time consuming, expensive, imprecise, and often unrepeatable. Central Coast Pathology donated a Dako Autostainer to the Biomedical Engineering Department that can perform immunohistological stains of up to 48 samples simultaneously using tightly controlled reagent volumes and incubation times. Protocols are programmed into the machine and can be repeated under the same conditions every time with minimal preparation and exposure to potentially dangerous reagents. This project’s goal was to analyze the properties of the cortical femur on 100 mice bones from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Analysis was limited to imaging which determined the ratio of bone volume to total volume (BV/TV) and osteocyte lacunae density. Mice were altered to knock out their SOST gene: a negative regulator of bone formation. Twelve groups were created to differentiate their treatment, duration, and phenotype. Transgenic (TG) mice had an overexpression of the SOST gene: they carried a bacterial artificial chromosome. This study evaluates the potential effects of silver salts on biocompatible metals used for prostheses during the chemical reduction process to produce a silver antimicrobial layer on the metal’s surface. Samples of two biocompatible metals were obtained: Stainless Steel 316L and ASTM F75 Cobalt Chromium Alloy. Three different silver salts were also acquired: silver nitrate, silver sulfadiazine, and silver chloride. Specimens of each metal were cut to size using a 4-1/2 inch aluminum oxide, 40 grit, cut off wheel for metal, attached to a Dewalt Angle Grinder. This project designed, fabricated, and partially tested a compensated pulsed alternator (compulsator) to power an electromagnetic rail gun (EMRG) in a multidisciplinary team. The EMRG team includes two master’s AERO students, two senior EE students, and three senior ME students. Design of the compulsator began with research through conference and research papers. This design was changed throughout the project as system analysis and component testing exposed unforeseen system limitations. This project proposes a power plant design that provides a supplemental source of electricity for appliances, machinery, and lighting at Hearst Castle and Ranch. The design concept includes a turbine-generator combination to convert kinetic and gravitational potential energy from the existing water distribution system to electrical energy: also known as a hydroelectric plant.
