Influence Of Fibroblasts On Functional Arteriogenesis In A Murine Chronic Hindlimb Ischemia Model, Ashli A. Santos
Influence Of Fibroblasts On Functional Arteriogenesis In A Murine Chronic Hindlimb Ischemia Model, Ashli A. Santos
Biomedical Engineering
Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) occurs when there is a narrowing or blockage – usually a buildup of plaque - within the arteries that reduces blood flow to tissues which can chronic ischemia. As with most diseases, early detection and proactive treatment are important to maximize prognosis. Exercise effectively treats PAOD, but due to ischemic pain in the limbs, or intermittent claudication (IC), exercise can become painful and difficult. Due to the buildup of plaque, occlusions create an ischemic environment that changes the pressure distribution in collateral networks and increases the shear stress in transverse collaterals. Those two responses signal …
Identifying And Reducing Variability, Improving Scaffold Morphology, And Investigating Alternative Materials For The Blood Vessel Mimic Lab Electrospinning Process, Evan M. Dowey
Master's Theses
The work of the Cal Poly Tissue Engineering Lab is primarily focused on the fabrication, characterization, and improvement of “Blood Vessel Mimics” (BVMs), tissue engineered constructs used to evaluate cellular response to vascular medical devices. Currently, cells are grown onto fibrous, porous tubes made using an in-house electrospinning process from PLGA, a biocompatible co-polymer. The adhesion and proliferation of cells in a BVM is reliant on the micro-scale structure of the PLGA scaffold, and as such it is of great importance for the electrospinning process to consistently produce scaffolds of similar morphologies. Additionally, it has been shown that cell proliferation …
Sex Differences And The Effects Of Exercise Training On Functional Vasodilation Following Arterial Occlusion In The Balb/C Mouse Spinotrapezius, Britta Nelson
Master's Theses
Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) often presents as intermittent claudication, which may be caused by impaired vasodilation. Impairment of resistance vessels may contribute to the pathogenesis of PAOD, and explain the poor correlation between resting blood flow and limb function. Collateral function following arterial occlusion is not well defined, however collaterals and arterialized collateral capillaries (ACCs) in male and female animal models exhibit impaired vasodilation following arterial occlusion, which can potentially be improved with exercise training. Furthermore, resistance vessels in the ischemic tree and stem are likely involved in the pathogenesis of PAOD, however the relative importance of each is …
Effects Of Support Structure Geometry On Slm Induced Residual Stresses In Overhanging Features, Ryan Baskett
Effects Of Support Structure Geometry On Slm Induced Residual Stresses In Overhanging Features, Ryan Baskett
Master's Theses
Selective laser melting (SLM) is a new and rapidly developing manufacturing method for producing full-density, geometrically complex metal parts. The SLM process is time and cost effective for small-scale production; however, wide-spread adoption of this technique is severely limited by residual stresses that can cause large deformations and in-process build failures. The issues associated with residual stress accumulation are most apparent in parts with overhanging features. Due to the complexity of the SLM process, the accumulation of residual stresses is difficult to assess a priori. The deformations and in-process failures caused by residual stress accumulation often lead to an expensive …

Usage Of Fomblin Y To Improve Water Repellence Of Surface Coatings, Shawn Pj Kirby, Jeffrey Alston, Andrew Guenthner
STAR Program Research Presentations
Fluoro-Decyl POSS (FDP) has shown strong potential as a water repellant surface coating. Additionally, Fomblin is a solvent believed to have the ability to control the crystallization of POSS compounds on surfaces. Controlling the crystallization is key to improving water repelling abilities of surfaces. Thus, dip coating FDP and Fomblin onto surfaces is being investigated for water repulsion, mechanical stability, and deposition feasibility. Relative water repelling abilities of different coatings were determined by measuring contact angle of surfaces with water. Coatings with and without POSS and Fomblin were compared. It was shown that the surfaces treated with both POSS and …

How Governmental Greenhouse Gas Science Has Been Weathered Through Time And Why It Matters, Christopher Apple
STAR Program Research Presentations
Global consumption of materials and energy is accelerating. The rate of plant and animal species extinction is accelerating. On a finite Earth with a growing population, current consumption cannot continue sustainably. Greenhouse gases (GHGs) tell us an important part of this story. The Global Greenhouse Gas Reference Network, managed by scientists at NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory, is the largest greenhouse gas analysis network in the world. It has been shaped by scientific questions, stagnant funding despite rises in research costs, and the task of understanding how the Earth system will respond to a changing climate. The Network began by …
Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (‘Drones’) To Collect Data From Tagged Fishers In The Environment, Vu A. Pham, Marc Horney, Aaron Drake
Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (‘Drones’) To Collect Data From Tagged Fishers In The Environment, Vu A. Pham, Marc Horney, Aaron Drake
STAR Program Research Presentations
Fisher (Pekania pennant) belongs to the weasel family. In October 2014, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service proposed to list the West Coast Distinct Population Segment of fisher as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. We wish to better define where fishers live within their habitats and use that information to improve conservation efforts. Previously, to track the behavior of wild fishers, researchers put tracker collars on the animals and relied on networks of fixed antennas on the ground in the environment to collect data. We are experimenting with using unmanned aerial vehicles (‘drones’) to collect data …

Removal Of Nitrates From Stormwater Using Nanoclays, Rubia Siddiqi
Removal Of Nitrates From Stormwater Using Nanoclays, Rubia Siddiqi
Master's Theses
Creeks and rivers are often polluted as a result of stormwater runoff that carries various contaminants in to open water bodies, causing adverse environmental and health effects. Low impact development (LID) techniques are currently employed to treat this runoff prior to discharge. Nitrate, however, is not consistently removed by these LID techniques. This study analyzed the ability of several nanoclays to remove nitrate in runoff and determined the feasibility of using them as a soil supplement for LID implementation. Six different nanoclays and HCl-treated clays were compared (pre-modified trimethyl stearyl ammonium nanoclay, pre-modified dimethyl dialkyl amine nanoclay, unmodified hydrophilic bentonite, …

Civil and Environmental Engineering
This investigation examines the effects of nonlinearity in the primary system of the coupled primary-secondary systems on accelerations in the secondary systems during seismic loading. The coupled primary-secondary systems considered in this investigation are those typically found in piers, wharves, and marine oil terminals. This investigation first examines the effects of nonlinearity in the primary system on acceleration at the point of attachment of the secondary system to the primary system and found that: The acceleration at the point of attachment of the secodnary system to the primary system decreases with increasing level of nonlinearity in the primary system. …
Radiation Exposure During Space Travel: Using Radioisotopes For A Comparative Study Of Human Feces And Urine As Integrated Shield Components, Noah L. Falck
Symposium
Earth’s atmosphere and magnetosphere deflect and absorb the majority of harmful radiation traversing Space; however, once outside Low Earth Orbit (LEO), payloads are exposed to Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR) and Solar Particle Events (SPEs). While humans possess capabilities that hardware does not, we are uniquely vulnerable to radiation. Detrimental effects range from nausea and dizziness brought by intense, short term doses to increased cancer risk and impaired cognitive function associated with chronic exposure. This paper aims to explore the use of human waste (feces and urine) as radiation shields in a comparative study of urine v. water and hydrated v. …

Narrow and broadband designs are fabricated; antenna input impedance and tag range tests confirm predictions.
Microwave Interferometry Diagnostic Applications For Measurements Of Explosives, Loren A. Kline
Microwave Interferometry Diagnostic Applications For Measurements Of Explosives, Loren A. Kline
Master's Theses
Microwave interferometry (MI) is a Doppler based diagnostic tool used to measure the detonation velocity of explosives, which has applications to explosive safety. The geometry used in existing MI experiments is cylindrical explosives pellets layered in a cylindrical case. It is of interest to Lawrence Livermore National Labs to measure additional geometries that may be overmoded, meaning that the geometries propagate higher-order transverse electromagnetic waves. The goal of my project is to measure and analyze the input reflection from a novel structure and to find a good frequency to use in an experiment using this structure. Two methods of determining …

Cal Poly Table Top, Kelsey M. Ishimatsu Jacobson, Andrew J. Whitney
Mechanical Engineering
Since many tables currently used at Cal Poly are not ideal for active design situations, we have designed, built and tested to be used in design classrooms with an emphasis on using the tables to quickly prototype ideas. This table is a standing height table in a trapezoidal shape which can comfortably seat four people. The modular design of the table allows multiple tables to be use to create different shapes so that the tables can be used in multiple ways.
Iota: Internet Of Things Assistant, Brandon M. Okumura
Iota: Internet Of Things Assistant, Brandon M. Okumura
Master's Theses
The Internet of Things is the networking of electronic devices, or “Things”, that enables them to collect and share data, as well as interact with their physical surround- ings. Analyzing this collected data allows us to make smarter economic decisions. These interconnected networks are usually driven by low-powered micro-controllers or cheap CPUs that are designed to function optimally with very little hardware. As scale and computational requirements increase, these micro-controllers are unable to grow without being physically replaced.
This thesis proposes a system, IoTA, that assists the Internet of Things by pro- viding a shared computational resource for endpoint devices. …
Emg-Driven Inverse Dynamic Analysis Of Knee Contact Forces During Gait And Cycling Using Opensim, Megan V. Pottinger, Katherine Mavrommati, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Emg-Driven Inverse Dynamic Analysis Of Knee Contact Forces During Gait And Cycling Using Opensim, Megan V. Pottinger, Katherine Mavrommati, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Biomedical Engineering
Joint contact forces determine the loading experienced by cartilage tissue and, thus, may be used to predict risk of cartilage tissue damage and osteoarthritis (OA). Participating in low impact and/or non-weight bearing activities such as cycling may help reduce knee OA risk by limiting forces exerted during exercise [1]. Cycling is a common recommendation for rehabilitative or fitness sustainment exercise for select patients [1]. Although knee joint contact forces have been directly measured in gait and cycling using instrumented knee implants [2,3] and calculated in gait using EMG-driven analysis [4]; they have not been calculated in cycling using EMG-driven analysis. …
Principal Component Analysis Of Gait And Cycling Experiments: Crosstalk Error Reduction And Corrected Knee Axes, Jordan Skaro, Harsh Goel, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Principal Component Analysis Of Gait And Cycling Experiments: Crosstalk Error Reduction And Corrected Knee Axes, Jordan Skaro, Harsh Goel, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Biomedical Engineering
Crosstalk is a leading source of error in motion analysis [1-2]. Due to incorrect flexion axis direction that develops from marker placement error, crosstalk results in a strong, anatomically incorrect correlation between flexion-extension (FE) and adduction-abduction (AA) motions [1-2]. Thus, crosstalk limits the ability of biomechanical models to reflect the “true” motion of the knee. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been proposed as a post-hoc correction for crosstalk in prior gait studies [1-2]; however, previous studies have not proposed a method to determine PCA corrected knee axes. Further, it is not clear how PCA should be implemented in motion analysis …
Elbow And Shoulder Joint Torques Are Correlated With Body Mass Index But Not Game Pitch Count In Youth Baseball Pitchers, Jim Douglas Darke, Eshan M. Dandekar, Arnel Aguinaldo, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Elbow And Shoulder Joint Torques Are Correlated With Body Mass Index But Not Game Pitch Count In Youth Baseball Pitchers, Jim Douglas Darke, Eshan M. Dandekar, Arnel Aguinaldo, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Biomedical Engineering
The number of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstructive (i.e. “Tommy John”) surgeries performed on youth baseball pitchers have more than doubled since 2000 [1]. Routinely pitching while fatigued is considered a leading factor associated with UCL injuries; adolescent pitchers who had elbow or shoulder surgery were 36 times more likely to have routinely pitched with arm fatigue [1]. MLB/USA Baseball Pitch Smart guidelines limit 9-10 yr. old pitchers to a maximum 75 pitches per game, a figure based on long-term studies related to injury prevention [2]. Several studies have shown that pitching kinematics (e.g. elbow flexion/extension and pronation/supination, scapulothoracic internal-external …
Knee Biomechanics During Cycling Are Similar For Normal Weight And Obese Subjects, Juan D. Gutierrez-Franco, Jordan Skaro, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Knee Biomechanics During Cycling Are Similar For Normal Weight And Obese Subjects, Juan D. Gutierrez-Franco, Jordan Skaro, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Biomedical Engineering
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease of cartilage and bone tissue, and is linked to more than 70% of total hip and knee replacements [1]. In 1994 the direct and indirect costs of OA in the United States were $155 billion [2] and in 2006 OA resulted in approximately $10.5 billion in hospital charges [3]. Obesity is a risk factor for OA [1, 3, 4], likely due to increased knee loading [5, 6] and varus malalignment [7] in gait. Seated cycling has been recommended as a weight-loss exercise with lower knee loads than walking or jogging [8]. However, lack of …

Enhancing Regional Ocean Modeling Simulation Performance With The Xeon Phi Architecture, Chris Lupo, Maria Pantoja, Paul Choboter
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Ocean studies are crucial to many scientific disciplines. Due to the difficulty in probing the deep layers of the ocean and the scarcity of data in some of the oceans, the scientific community relies heavily on ocean simulation models. Ocean modeling is complex and computationally intensive, and improving the performance of these models will greatly advance and improve the work of ocean scientists. This paper presents a detailed exploration of the acceleration of the Regional Ocean Model System (ROMS) software with the latest Intel Xeon Phi x200 architectures. Both shared-memory and distributed-memory parallel computing models are evaluated. Results show run …
Characterization Of Slm Printed 316l Stainless Steel And Investigation Of Microlattice Geometry, Finley H. Marbury
Characterization Of Slm Printed 316l Stainless Steel And Investigation Of Microlattice Geometry, Finley H. Marbury
Materials Engineering
The goal of this project was firstly to characterize Cal Poly’s SLM printed 316L stainless steel. SEM analysis showed Cal Poly’s as-printed 316L material to have a cellular dendritic microstructure containing mostly austenite and a small amount of δ-ferrite. After being heat treated to eliminate warp, its yeild and ultimate tensile strength were on par with the literature, however higher modulus and lower elongation were observed. XRD analysis confirmed residual stresses in the material, and that grains are preferentially oriented in both heat treated and non heat treated samples. The amount of porosity in the material was found to be …

Measurement And Analysis Of The Physical And Climatic Distribution Environment For Air Package Shipment, David Guadagnini
Master's Theses
The modern air parcel distribution industry has significantly grown to become one of the most commonly employed methods to quickly transport goods throughout the world. Although it comes with many benefits, including higher speed, greater reliability, and tighter security, the multimodal transport system within it can expose packages to a wide variety of climatic and physical distribution hazards. In a single route of transportation, packages could be included in different types of small delivery vans, large commercial semi trucks, cargo dollies, feeder aircraft, and high altitude commercial jetliners. The varying hazard level presented during distribution could directly weaken the packaging …
Multi-Criteria Flow-Shop Scheduling Optimization, Raviteja Arikati
Multi-Criteria Flow-Shop Scheduling Optimization, Raviteja Arikati
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
A flow-shop is a type of manufacturing job shop where similar jobs follow a similar, linear sequence through the shop. Every day, flow-shops receive several different orders and it is up to the scheduler to plan the daily schedule. This schedule should be designed to prevent bottlenecks in the shop, to have on-time delivery of products, and satisfy several other requirements. Often, schedulers perform subjective scheduling and utilize simple heuristics or just intuition to schedule the jobs. With computer-based scheduling, schedulers can now create schedules and determine quantitatively what sorts of schedules work best. Currently, much of the computer-based schedules …
Characterization Of The 15-5 Stainless Steel Electric Discharge Machining Recast Layer, Julian R. Lohser, Rhys W. Gilmore
Characterization Of The 15-5 Stainless Steel Electric Discharge Machining Recast Layer, Julian R. Lohser, Rhys W. Gilmore
Materials Engineering
Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a non-conventional machining process that is used for tough, hard materials or materials that require no tool force. Wire EDM produces a recast layer and heat-affected zone as a result of rapid melting and quenching at the surface of the cut. A secondary machining operation has been required to remove this layer. Previous estimates of the depth of the recast layer are likely too conservative due to improvements in the technology; therefore, the goal of this study is to characterize and more accurately investigate the size of the layer. Two EDM machine parameters, voltage and …
Inkjet Printing Of Nano-Silver Conductive Ink On Pet Substrate, Skyler Jiang
Inkjet Printing Of Nano-Silver Conductive Ink On Pet Substrate, Skyler Jiang
Materials Engineering
Printing of conductive ink traditionally uses copper-based ink and was used on high temperature metal substrates due to the high curing and sintering temperature of copper. In this experiment, however, Metalon JS-B25P nano-silver conductive ink was printed using an Epson Stylus C88+ inkjet printer on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) based Novele printing media made for low temperature applications. With silver’s lower sintering temperature, the nano-silver particles in this ink are desired to be able to sinter at a low enough temperature to be used on the PET substrate. The printed ink traces were cured with a temperature-controlled hotplate at 100℃, 120℃, …
Screen Printing Silver Stretchable Conductive Paste To High Density Synthetic Fabric, Allison Rose Tuuri, Wesley Graham Powell
Screen Printing Silver Stretchable Conductive Paste To High Density Synthetic Fabric, Allison Rose Tuuri, Wesley Graham Powell
Materials Engineering
This project investigated the viability of screen printing stretchable silver conductive paste directly onto fabric and how the resistance changed under cyclic mechanical loading. The paste tested was DuPont™ PE873 stretchable silver conductive paste, which forms a stretchable conductive path by suspending silver flakes in elastomer that can be elastically strained along with the underlying substrate. The silver pastes were printed directly onto two different high-density synthetic fabrics of different weaves. Other samples were prepared by first printing a base layer between the silver paste and the fabric. One base layer was a solvent-based dielectric (DuPont™ ME776) and a stretchable …

The Relationship Between Structural Parameters And Mechanical Properties Of Cactus Spines, Jorge Armando Martinez, Pamela Liz Szeto, Theresa Mae Stewart
The Relationship Between Structural Parameters And Mechanical Properties Of Cactus Spines, Jorge Armando Martinez, Pamela Liz Szeto, Theresa Mae Stewart
Materials Engineering
Considering an increasing interest in renewable, biodegradable resources that exhibit excellent mechanical properties, 24 species of cactus spines were investigated using three-point bend testing, X-ray diffraction (XRD) for structural parameters, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze fracture surfaces. Additionally, a density of about 1.3 g/cm3 was measured for each spine utilizing the displacement method, closely matching existing data from literature. The flexural modulus varied greatly between species, ranging from 1.22 GPa (Echinocactus polycephalus) to 43.58 GPa (Stenocereus thurberi). In addition, flexural strength and strain to failure was also measured for each spine. XRD analysis of …
