Flowunsteady: An Interactional Aerodynamics Solver For Multirotor Aircraft And Wind Energy, Eduardo Alvarez, Judd Mehr, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

The ability to accurately and rapidly assess unsteady interactional aerodynamics is a shortcoming and bottleneck in the design of various next-generation aerospace systems: from electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to airborne wind energy (AWE) and wind farms. In this study, we present a meshless CFD framework based on the reformulated vortex particle method (rVPM) for the analysis of complex interactional aerodynamics. The rVPM is a large eddy simulation (LES) solving the Navier-Stokes equations in their vorticity form. It uses a meshless Lagrangian scheme, which not only avoids the hurdles of mesh generation, but it also conserves the vortical …

Faculty Publications

Cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV) and other electroanalytical methods have been applied to molten chloride salts to study metal ion behavior. These studies have been useful for understanding and optimizing the electrowinning of metals. Notable ions that have been studied are rare earth and actinide metal ions in LiCl-KCl salts. However, the behavior of lanthanum (La3+) ions in some molten chlorides or chloride mixtures (e.g., CaCl2) has not been studied. CV experiments were conducted to evaluate La3+ behavior in CaCl2-LiCl and CaCl2 and were compared to La3+ behavior in …

Temperature And Radiation Measurements In A Pressurized Oxy-Coal Reactor, Dustin Peter Badger May 2022

Temperature And Radiation Measurements In A Pressurized Oxy-Coal Reactor, Dustin Peter Badger

Theses and Dissertations

To understand the behavior and performance of a new 100 kW pilot scale pressurized oxy-coal reactor, radiation measurements of the flame have been made using a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. From these radiation measurements, gas temperatures were obtained using integrated spectral infrared (ISIR) emission from the CO2 and water vapor of the combustion product gases. Radiative emission from the product gases in the reactor were collected through a quartz window 1.524 m downstream of the burner. An optical probe focused culminated emission from the combustion chamber into a silica fiber which transported the radiative signal to the spectrometer. The …

Multi-Material 3d-Printed Silicone Vocal Fold Models, Clayton Adam Young

Theses and Dissertations

Self-oscillating synthetic vocal fold (VF) models are often used to study human voice production. In this thesis, a method for fabricating multi-layer self-oscillating synthetic VF models using silicone 3D printing is presented. Multi-material 3D printing enables faster fabrication times with more complex geometries than traditional casting methods and builds a foundation for producing VF models with potentially more life-like geometries, materials, and vibratory characteristics. The printing method in this study used a custom dual extruder and slicing software to print UV-curable liquid silicone into a gel-like support matrix. The extruder was fabricated using high-torque stepper motors with high resolution leadscrews …

Investigation Of Skid Resistance On Asphalt Pavements In Utah, Aaron B. Smith May 2022

Investigation Of Skid Resistance On Asphalt Pavements In Utah, Aaron B. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Friction is one of the essential aspects of pavement performance and safety. Unfortunately, the rate at which the friction data are being collected exceeds the rate at which the data can be proficiently analyzed. Furthermore, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) lacks long-term trend analysis for the many years of locked-wheel skid trailer (LWST) data collected in Utah. In addition, UDOT is missing a statistically adequate correlation equation between friction-testing devices. Likewise, only one method is used in Utah to prequalify aggregates for use in pavements. Finally, there has not been an investigation of the potential use of lithium silicate …

Large Eddy Simulation Of The Wakes Of Three Urban Air Mobility Vehicles, Denis-Gabriel Caprace, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

Recent advances in urban air mobility have driven the development of many new VTOL concepts. These vehicles often feature original designs and futuristic shapes. Due to their novelty, the wake characteristics of such aircraft are unknown. However, large wake-induced velocities, should they exist, may be dangerous for any other vehicle evolving in their close proximity. Therefore, improved knowledge about the wakes of VTOL vehicles is needed to guarantee the safety of urban air mobility operations. In this work, we study the wake of three VTOL aircraft in cruise by means of large eddy simulation. We present a two-stage numerical procedure …

Acoustofluidics For Simultaneous Nanoparticle-Based Drug Loading And Exosome Encapsulation, Zeyu Wang, Joseph Rich, Nanjing Hao, Yuyang Gu, Chuyi Chen, Shujie Yang, Peiran Zhang, Tony Jun Huang

Faculty Publications

Nanocarrier and exosome encapsulation has been found to significantly increase the efficacy of targeted drug delivery while also minimizing unwanted side effects. However, the development of exosome-encapsulated drug nanocarriers is limited by low drug loading efficiencies and/or complex, time-consuming drug loading processes. Herein, we have developed an acoustofluidic device that simultaneously performs both drug loading and exosome encapsulation. By synergistically leveraging the acoustic radiation force, acoustic microstreaming, and shear stresses in a rotating droplet, the concentration, and fusion of exosomes, drugs, and porous silica nanoparticles is achieved. The final product consists of drug-loaded silica nanocarriers that are encased within an …

Improving Predictions Of Vapor Pressure, Liquid Heat Capacity, And Heat Of Vaporization In Associating Fluids, Joseph C. Bloxham

Theses and Dissertations

Vapor pressure, heat of vaporization, and liquid heat capacity are linked through fundamental thermodynamic relationships. These related properties are essential for the safe design of many industrial processes, and measurement and prediction of these properties remains an essential part of modern thermodynamics research. DIPPR uses the fundamental relationships connecting these properties as a prediction method for all three, referred to as "the derivative method." DIPPR regards values predicted using the derivative method as highly accurate, even when compared to more traditional predictions. Despite the widespread interest in improving understanding of these properties, many questions remain regarding their prediction. Foremost among …

Evaluating Ramp Meter Wait Time In Utah, Tanner Jeffrey Daines Apr 2022

Evaluating Ramp Meter Wait Time In Utah, Tanner Jeffrey Daines

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop an algorithm that could predict ramp meter wait time at metered freeway on-ramps throughout the state of Utah using existing loop detector systems on the ramps. The loop detectors provided data in 60-second increments that include volume, occupancy, and the metering rate. Using these data sources, several ramp meter queue length algorithms were applied; these predicted queue lengths were then converted into wait times by using the metering rate provided by the detector data. A conservation model and several variations of a Kalman filter model generated predicted queue lengths and wait times …

Prediction Of Springback In Aa6016-T4 Sheets Using Isotropic Finite Element And Epsc Modeling Approaches, Dane Roger Sargeant

Theses and Dissertations

Strain path changes are common in complex automotive stampings, where sheet materials undergo a combination of drawing, stretching, and bending to achieve a desired part shape. Aluminum sheet alloys are increasingly used in vehicle structure light-weighting efforts, but limited formability and high levels of springback present challenges to the manufacturing and assembly processes. The current work explores springback levels in AA6016-T4 sheet after various pure bending operations, where sheets were first pre-strained in uniaxial, plane-strain, and biaxial tension. Finite element modeling of the pre-straining and subsequent bending operations will be performed using both isotropic and elasto-plastic self-consistent (EPSC) crystal plasticity …

Defining And Evaluating Design Patterns To Increase "This Is Not A Game" (Tinag), Lucia A. Mata

Theses and Dissertations

TINAG, which stands for This is Not a Game, can be defined as "the concept that there are pervasive games, often ARGs, that are designed to immerse players in such a way that they suspend their disbelief in a fictional narrative and act like the world they have entered is real during their play time" (Pohjola 2004). Many designers and educators want to create games that appear real, but they are unsure of how to accomplish this. Increasing TINAG allows designers to create more realistic games while taking advantage of the many benefits that TINAG experiences offer. The purpose of …

3D printing for microfluidic device fabrication has received considerable interest in recent years, in part driven by the potential to dramatically speed up device development by reducing device fabrication time to the minutes timescale. Moreover, in contrast to traditional cleanroom-based fabrication processes that require manual production and stacking of a limited number of layers, 3D printing allows full use of the 3D fabrication volume to lay out microfluidic elements with complex yet compact 3D geometries. The Nordin group has successfully developed multiple generations of high resolution printers and materials for microfluidic devices that achieve this vision. However, because of the …

The Effects Of Various Inlet Distortion Profiles On Transonic Fan Performance, Andrew Michael Bedke Apr 2022

The Effects Of Various Inlet Distortion Profiles On Transonic Fan Performance, Andrew Michael Bedke

Theses and Dissertations

An increased understanding of how inlet flow distortion affects transonic fans enables improved fan design and performance prediction. Inlet distortion refers to non-uniformities in the incoming flow properties. Complex inlet ducts in high performance aircraft result in distorted flow at the fan inlet. In this thesis, two studies were performed using Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (URANS) simulations. The first study focused on understanding how the transition abruptness between the clean and distorted sector in the inlet Pt profile as well as the circumferential extent of the distorted sector affect distortion transfer and generation through a transonic fan. Simulations on two …

Mechanisms For Improvement Of Key Mechanical Properties In Polymer Powder Bed Fusion Processes, Clinton Spencer Abbott Apr 2022

Mechanisms For Improvement Of Key Mechanical Properties In Polymer Powder Bed Fusion Processes, Clinton Spencer Abbott

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work is to understand the reasons for varied mechanical properties among three polymer Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes. Parts for this work were manufactured from Polyamide 12 (PA12) using the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF), Multi-Jet Fusion (MJF), and the recently developed Large Area Projection Sintering (LAPS) processes. Previous works have shown that LAPS parts demonstrate significantly higher density, ductility, and toughness than parts from the L-PBF and MJF processes. A hot isostatic pressing (HIP) treatment was developed to reduce porosity in L-PBF and MJF parts and determine if increasing part density would …

Systems Engineering Of The Global L-Band Observatory For Water Cycle Studies, James Nathan Smith Apr 2022

Systems Engineering Of The Global L-Band Observatory For Water Cycle Studies, James Nathan Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The Global L-band Observatory for Water Cycle Studies (GLOWS) is designed as a follow-on to the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) observatory launched in 2015. While GLOWS is essentially copying many aspects of the SMAP mission, a key change has been made in the antenna technology. SMAP uses a reflector antenna and to reduce mission costs GLOWS uses a metamaterial lens antenna. This type of antenna is less efficient, so it must be proven that GLOWS can achieve the same uncertainty levels in soil moisture measurements as SMAP. In this work, a unified framework for modeling and analyzing GLOWS' ability …

Effects Of Optical Configuration And Sampling Efficiency On The Response Of Low-Cost Optical Particle Counters, Brady Scott Hales

Theses and Dissertations

Hazards associated with air pollution motivate the search for technologies capable of monitoring individual exposure to gaseous pollutants and particulate matter (PM). A Low-cost Optical Particle Counter (OPC), costing less than 50 USD, is an example of such technologies. Currently, OPCs are widely used to measure the concentration of particle matter in ambient air. While these low-cost air quality sensors are widely available, the accuracy and precision of these devices is highly uncertain. Consequently, the purpose of this thesis is to present an analytical model of two generic, low-cost OPCs based on the Laws of Conservation of Mass, Momentum, and …

Gradient-Based Wind Farm Layout Optimization, Jared Joseph Thomas Apr 2022

Gradient-Based Wind Farm Layout Optimization, Jared Joseph Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

As wind energy technology continues to mature, farm sizes grow and wind farm layout design becomes more difficult, in part due to the number of design variables and constraints. Wind farm layout optimization is typically approached using gradient-free methods because of the highly multi-modal shape of the wind farm layout design space. Gradient-free method performance generally degrades with increasing problem size, making it difficult to find optimal layouts for larger wind farms. However, gradient-based optimization methods can effectively and efficiently solve large-scale problems with many variables and constraints. To pave the way for effective and efficient wind farm layout optimization …

Implementation Of An Api For And The Folding Of Fpga Routing Resource Graphs In Vtr, Ethan Steiner Rogers Apr 2022

Implementation Of An Api For And The Folding Of Fpga Routing Resource Graphs In Vtr, Ethan Steiner Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

FPGAs provide parallel computing that is fit for speeding up the computation of a large range of problems. Programming an FPGA involves a complex tool flow for which several CAD tools have been developed. These tools compute solutions to many problems such as packing, placement, and routing, which map a circuit design onto an FPGA. These computations require a great deal of memory, of which the Routing Resource Graph contributes the most of any individual data structure. If the RRGraph could be represented in a more compact manner, performance of the tool flow algorithms may be improved due to an …
