Autostereoscopic 3d Display Based On Micromirror Array, Gregory P. Nordin, C. H. Ahn, H. J. Cho, S. T. Kowel, J. H. Kulick, J. Yan

Faculty Publications

A novel approach for three-dimensional (3-D) display systems implemented with a micromirror array was proposed, designed, realized, and tested. The major advantages of this approach include the following: 1 micromirrors are reflective and hence achromatic (panchromatic), 2 a wide variety of displays can be used as image sources, and 3 time multiplexing can be introduced on top of space multiplexing to optimize the viewing zone arrangements. A two-view (left and right) 3-D autostereoscopic display system was first constructed. Left- and right-eye views in the forms of both still and motion 3-D scenes were displayed, and viewers were able to fuse …

Effects Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Fusion Welded 304l Stainless Steel, Colin J. Sterling Jun 2004

Effects Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Fusion Welded 304l Stainless Steel, Colin J. Sterling

Theses and Dissertations

Friction stir processing (FSP) has been utilized to locally process regions of arc weldments in 304L stainless steel to improve the microstructure and mechanical performance. The cast microstructure and coarse delta-ferrite has been replaced with a fine-grained wrought microstructure. Furthermore, twins were introduced throughout the friction stir processed region. Although sub-surface sigma and carbides were introduced during FSP, their presence is not expected to adversely affect the resulting mechanical or corrosion properties of friction stir processed 304L arc welds. The resulting mechanical properties of FS processed weldments were also an improvement over as-welded arc welds. FSP resulted in an increase …

Correlation And Covariance Of Satellite Scatterometer Measurements, David G. Long, Peter K. Yoho Jun 2004

Correlation And Covariance Of Satellite Scatterometer Measurements, David G. Long, Peter K. Yoho

Faculty Publications

Capable scatterometer designs have been developed that seek improved resolution through the use of higher pulse sampling rates. The high sampling rates bring the traditional scatterometry assumption of measurement independence into question. This paper uses fundamental scattering theory to derive general expressions for correlation and covariance between scatterometer measurements and provides practical analysis using current and future instruments as examples. The paper derives expressions for the measurement variance parameter Kp when measurement correlation due to Rayleigh fading effects is present and relates Kp to the statistics of multiple pulse measurements. A function of the transmit signal modulation and receive processing, …

Modeling And Control Of Surface Micromachined Thermal Actuators, Robert K. Messenger May 2004

Modeling And Control Of Surface Micromachined Thermal Actuators, Robert K. Messenger

Theses and Dissertations

A model that accurately describes the transient and steady-state response of thermal microactuators is desirable to provide guidance for design and operation. However, modeling the full response of thermal actuators is challenging due to the temperature-dependent material properties and nonlinear deformations that must be included to obtain accurate results. To meet these challenges a three-dimensional multi-physics nonlinear finite-element model was developed using commercial code. The Thermomechanical Inplane Microactuator (TIM) was chosen as a candidate application to validate the model. TIMs were fabricated using the SUMMiT V™ process and their response was measured using a high-speed camera. The TIMs were modeled …

Linear Voltage To Current Conversion Using Submicron Cmos Devices, David J. Comer, Donald Comer, Aaron Shreeve

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: AMIS--American Micro-Systems, Inc. This paper investigates the linearity of submicron gate length CMOS devices and their behavior in open loop voltage to current (V-I) converters. Methods are developed to estimate the deviation from linearity in V-I converters due to short-channel effects. Using these methods, a converter is designed and fabricated on a 0.35 micron process. The measured deviation from linearity is less than 1% and the simulated bandwidth is 1 GHz.

Design And Analysis Of Charge-Transfer Amplifiers For Low-Power Analog-To-Digital Converter Applications, William Joel Marble Apr 2004

Design And Analysis Of Charge-Transfer Amplifiers For Low-Power Analog-To-Digital Converter Applications, William Joel Marble

Theses and Dissertations

The demand for low-power A/D conversion techniques has motivated the exploration of charge-transfer amplifiers (CTAs) to construct efficient, precise voltage comparators. Despite notable advantages over classical, continuous-time architectures, little is understood about the dynamic behavior of CTAs or their utility in precision A/D converters. Accordingly, this dissertation presents several advancements related to the design and analysis of charge-transfer amplifiers for low-power data conversion.

First, an analysis methodology is proposed which leads to a deterministic model of the voltage transfer function. The model is generalized to any timing scheme and can be extended to account for nonlinear threshold modulation. The model …

On Noncoherent Detection Of Cpm, Michael D. Rice, Erik Perrins Apr 2004

On Noncoherent Detection Of Cpm, Michael D. Rice, Erik Perrins

Faculty Publications

This work was supported under a grant from the Air Force ARTM program (Contracts F04700-02-P-0080 and F04700-02-P-0081). It is well understood that the performance of noncoherent receivers with multi-symbol observation intervals approaches that of coherent receivers as the observation interval grows arbitrarily large. However, since complexity also grows exponentially with observation length, there are practical limits to this approach. In this paper we present a noncoherent receiver for continuous phase modulation (CPM) whose structure is a hybrid between existing coherent and noncoherent receiver architectures. The presentation is given in the most general M-ary multi-h terms, with some emphasis on the …

Numerical Modeling Of Friction Stir Welding: A Comparison Of Alegra And Forge3, Alma H. Oliphant Apr 2004

Numerical Modeling Of Friction Stir Welding: A Comparison Of Alegra And Forge3, Alma H. Oliphant

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research was to evaluate the capabilities of ALEGRA, a Sandia National Labs hydrocode, and Forge3, a Transvalor S.A. product, to accurately model the Friction Stir Welding Process. ALEGRA and Forge3 are discussed in light of the inherent challenges of modeling Friction Stir Welding, and a rotational boundary condition is added to ALEGRA. Results are presented from Friction Stir Welding modeling outputs from both ALEGRA and Forge3. ALEGRA is shown to be incapable of modeling the Friction Stir Welding process, in large part due to its focus on shock propagation, which causes extremely small time steps. Forge3 …

Molecular-Dynamics Simulation Of The Effect Of Ions On A Liquid–Liquid Interface For A Partially Miscible Mixture, Richard L. Rowley, Kent E. Wardle, Eric Carlson, Douglas Henderson Apr 2004

Molecular-Dynamics Simulation Of The Effect Of Ions On A Liquid–Liquid Interface For A Partially Miscible Mixture, Richard L. Rowley, Kent E. Wardle, Eric Carlson, Douglas Henderson

Faculty Publications

Molecular-dynamics simulations were performed to model the effect of added salt ions on the liquid-liquid interface in a partially miscible system. Simulations of the interface between saturated phases of a model 1-hexanol + water system show a bilayer structure of 1-hexanol molecules at the interface with OH heads of the first layer directed into the water phase and the opposite orientation for the second layer. The alignment of the polar OH groups at the interface stabilizes a charge separation of sodium and chloride ions when salt is introduced into the aqueous phase, producing an electrical double layer. Chloride ions aggregate …

Gradient-Based Non-Linear Microstructure Design, Brent L. Adams, M. Lyon Apr 2004

Gradient-Based Non-Linear Microstructure Design, Brent L. Adams, M. Lyon

Faculty Publications

The support of this research by the Army Research Office is gratefully acknowledged. M. Lyon is supported by a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Fourier analysis is implemented on the orientation distribution of a polycrystalline microstructure. The linearity and convexity of the Fourier space, with respect to orientation, allows one to consider all possible distributions by considering all linear combinations of single-grain orientations. The limits of the Fourier space are therefore defined by the solutions to a set of linear programming problems. A unique approach to the linear programming, similar to the Krylov subspace methods for obtaining solutions to …

Hardware Synthesis Of Synchronous Data Flow Models, Matthew R. Koecher Apr 2004

Hardware Synthesis Of Synchronous Data Flow Models, Matthew R. Koecher

Theses and Dissertations

Synchronous Dataflow (SDF) graphs are a convenient way to represent many signal processing and dataflow operations. Nodes within SDF graphs represent computation while arcs represent dependencies between nodes. Using a graph representation, SDF graphs formally specify a dataflow algorithm without any assumptions on the final implementation. This allows an SDF model to be synthesized into a variety of implementation techniques including both software and hardware.

This thesis presents a technique for generating an abstract hardware representation from SDF models. The techniques presented here operate on SDF models defined structurally within the Ptolemy modeling environment. The behavior of the nodes within …

Source Level Debugging Of Circuits Synthesized From High Level Language Descriptions, Karl S. Hemmert Apr 2004

Source Level Debugging Of Circuits Synthesized From High Level Language Descriptions, Karl S. Hemmert

Theses and Dissertations

The rapid increase in the density of modern FPGAs has allowed ever increasingly complex designs to be mapped to FPGAs. However, this increase in logic resources is accompanied by an increase in the complexity of describing and verifying the operation of an application. This has prompted the search for new approaches to the design, debug and verification of circuits. The desire to find more effecient approaches to designing these large FPGA circuits has led to the creation of synthesizing compilers that can create hardware from high-level descriptions based on general purpose programming languages. Being able to describe the application at …

Metrics For Human Driving Of Multiple Robots, Dan R. Olsen Jr., Jonathan Turner, Stephen Bart Wood Apr 2004

Metrics For Human Driving Of Multiple Robots, Dan R. Olsen Jr., Jonathan Turner, Stephen Bart Wood

Faculty Publications

A goal of human-robot interaction is to expand the capability of human beings so that they can control multiple robots simultaneously. This provides leverage for human attention beyond single robot interaction. The number of such robots that can be operated is called the fan-out of a human-robot team. We define the concepts of neglect-tolerance as a measure of autonomy and interaction-effort as a measure of required human attention. A model for fan-out is presented that predicts a human's ability to control multiple robots. We validate this model using robot simulations and user studies. Using the validated model we demonstrate enhanced …

Coordinated Uav Target Assignment Using Distributed Calculation Of Target-Task Tours, David H. Walker Mar 2004

Coordinated Uav Target Assignment Using Distributed Calculation Of Target-Task Tours, David H. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the improvement of cooperative task allocation to vehicles in multiple-vehicle, multiple-target scenarios through the use of more effective preplanned tours. Effective allocation of vehicles to targets requires knowledge of both the team objectives and the contributions that individual vehicles can make toward accomplishing team goals. This is primarily an issue of individual vehicle path planning --- determining the path the vehicles will follow to accomplish individual and team goals. Conventional methods plan optimal point-to-point path segments that often result in lengthy and suboptimal tours because the trajectory neither considers future tasks nor the overall path. However, cooperation …

A Comprehensive Model For Technology Push Product Development, Gregory Loren Bishop Mar 2004

A Comprehensive Model For Technology Push Product Development, Gregory Loren Bishop

Theses and Dissertations

Successful product development has been a fundamental part of many of today's companies and their continued prosperity depends on continuing to develop new products in the future. There are many models of product development. The two most common classes of development are market pull (MP) and technology push (TP). TP product development differs from MP in that the development begins with a specified technology rather than a specified customer. Because TP development is generally considered more difficult and challenging, most of the product development research has focused on MP development and many researchers and practitioners favor MP development over TP …

Transmission Strategies For Wireless Multi-User, Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output Communication Channels, Quentin H. Spencer Mar 2004

Transmission Strategies For Wireless Multi-User, Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output Communication Channels, Quentin H. Spencer

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) processing techniques for wireless communication are of interest for next-generation systems because of their potential to dramatically improve capacity in some propagation environments. When used in applications such as wireless LAN and cellular telephony, the MIMO processing methods must be adapted for the situation where a base station is communicating with many users simultaneously. This dissertation focuses on the downlink of such a channel, where the base station and all of the users have antenna arrays. If the transmitter has advance knowledge of the users' channel transfer functions, it can use that information to minimize the interuser …

High-Torque Capacity Compliant Centrifugal Clutches, Ryan G. Weight Mar 2004

High-Torque Capacity Compliant Centrifugal Clutches, Ryan G. Weight

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis developed high-torque-capacity floating opposing arm clutches that are manufactured with standard economical manufacturing processes, while maintaining critical performance characteristics. Contact engagement speed and torque capacity models were created for the Hoffco-Comet, floating-opposing-arm (FOA), and floating 1 (F1) clutches. Sensitivity analyses were performed to identify key design parameters. A robust compliant FOA clutch was designed by minimizing the tolerance for both contact engagement speed and torque capacity. The robust design insures that the clutch will operate within the prescribed application constraints. Additional modeling showed that using a layered clutch would significantly tighten the contact engagement speed and torque performance …

Floodplain Risk Analysis Using Flood Probability And Annual Exceedance Probability Maps, Christopher M. Smemoe Mar 2004

Floodplain Risk Analysis Using Flood Probability And Annual Exceedance Probability Maps, Christopher M. Smemoe

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents two approaches to determining the effects of natural variability and model uncertainty on the extents of computed floodplain boundaries. The first approach represents the floodplain boundary as a spatial map of flood probabilities -- with values between 0 and 100%. Instead of representing the floodplain boundary at a certain recurrence interval as a single line, this approach creates a spatial map that shows the probability of flooding at each point in the floodplain. This flood probability map is a useful tool for visualizing the uncertainty of a floodplain boundary. However, engineers are still required to determine a …

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an examination of the jitter performance of different oscillator types in the presence of flicker noise, white noise and power supply noise. Key results are achieved using time domain simulations to determine cycle jitter of several different oscillator architectures, semiconductor processes and component features. In the end, a design procedure is developed for creating a low-jitter oscillator in a TSMC .25mm CMOS semiconductor process.

Full-Scale Lateral-Load Tests Of A 3x5 Pile Group In Soft Clays And Silts, Jeffrey L. Snyder Mar 2004

Full-Scale Lateral-Load Tests Of A 3x5 Pile Group In Soft Clays And Silts, Jeffrey L. Snyder

Theses and Dissertations

A series of static lateral load tests were conducted on a group of fifteen piles arranged in a 3x5 pattern. The piles were placed at a center-to-center spacing of 3.92 pile diameters. A single isolated pile was also tested for comparison to the group response. The subsurface profile consisted of cohesive layers of soft to medium consistency underlain by interbedded layers of sands and fine-grained soils. The piles were instrumented to measure pile-head deflection, rotation, and load, as well as strain versus pile depth.

Autonomous Landing Of A Rotary Unmanned Aerial Vehicle In A Non-Cooperative Environment Using Machine Vision, Joshua Martin Hintze Mar 2004

Autonomous Landing Of A Rotary Unmanned Aerial Vehicle In A Non-Cooperative Environment Using Machine Vision, Joshua Martin Hintze

Theses and Dissertations

Landing an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is a non-trivial problem. Removing the ability to cooperate with the landing site further increases the complexity. This thesis develops a multi-stage process that allows a UAV to locate the safest landing site, and then land without a georeference. Machine vision is the vehicle sensor used to locate potential landing hazards and generate an estimated UAV position. A description of the algorithms, along with validation results, are presented. The thesis shows that software-simulated landing performs adequately, and that future hardware integration looks promising.

Design Of A High Speed Mixed Signal Cmos Mutliplying Circuit, David Ray Bartholomew Mar 2004

Design Of A High Speed Mixed Signal Cmos Mutliplying Circuit, David Ray Bartholomew

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the design of a mixed-signal CMOS multiplier implemented with short-channel PMOS transistors. The multiplier presented here forms the product of a differential input voltage and a five-bit digital code. A TSMC 0.18 µm MOSFET model is used to simulate the circuit in Cadence Design Systems. The research presented in this thesis reveals a configuration that allows the multiplier to run at a speed of 8.2 GHz with end-point nonlinearity less than 5%. The high speed and low nonlinearity make this circuit ideal for applications such as filtering and digital to analog conversion.

Implementation Issues Of Real-Time Trajectory Generation On Small Uavs, Derek B. Kingston Mar 2004

Implementation Issues Of Real-Time Trajectory Generation On Small Uavs, Derek B. Kingston

Theses and Dissertations

The transition from a mathematical algorithm to a physical hardware implementation is non-trivial. This thesis discusses the issues involved in the transition from the theory of real-time trajectory generation all the way through a hardware experiment. Documentation of the validation process as well as modifications to the existing theory as a result of hardware testing are treated at length. The results of hardware experimentation show that trajectory generation can be done in real-time in a manner facilitating coordination of multiple small UAVs.

Influence Of Consolidation And Interweaving On Compression Behavior Of Isotruss™ Structures, Steven Matthew Hansen Mar 2004

Influence Of Consolidation And Interweaving On Compression Behavior Of Isotruss™ Structures, Steven Matthew Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Composite IsoTruss™ structures incorporate intersecting longitudinal and helical members. At the intersections, the fiber tows can be interwoven to achieve mechanical interlocking for increased joint integrity. Interlocking introduces gaps and curvilinear fiber paths similar to the crossovers in filament-wound structures, potentially facilitating local delamination within the members, thus reducing the strength and/or damage tolerance of the structure. Optimizing the interlocking pattern at the joints along with efficient consolidation minimizes these effects.

Joint specimens were fabricated using a specially designed machine. Specific tow intersection patterns at the joint were: 1) Completely encapsulating the longitudinal member with the tows of the helical …

Percolation Paths Of Three-Dimensions In Sensitized Stainless Steel, Alisa Jean Henrie Mar 2004

Percolation Paths Of Three-Dimensions In Sensitized Stainless Steel, Alisa Jean Henrie

Theses and Dissertations

The study of three-dimensional percolation paths through materials is important in its contribution to understanding defect sensitive properties of materials. This work shows the importance of grain boundary character in modeling defect sensitive boundaries. Also presented are trends of percolation of sensitized grain boundaries in 304 stainless steel (304SS). Of particular interest is how open paths form in a three-dimensional model created through serial sectioning. Evidence is presented that triple or quadruple points that contain typically two boundaries with special character that intersect the percolation path break up the path. Some grains with no known special qualities (i.e., CSL) have …

Beamforming Techniques And Interference Mitigation Using A Multiple Feed Array For Radio Astronomy, Chad K. Hansen Mar 2004

Beamforming Techniques And Interference Mitigation Using A Multiple Feed Array For Radio Astronomy, Chad K. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Radio frequency interference has become a large problem to radio astronomers. This thesis proposes the idea that radio frequency interference can be mitigated using a phased array feed in conjunction with a large reflector. A phased array feed would allow radio astronomers to observe fainter signals than is currently possible, while at the same time enabling rapid sky surveys. A phased array feed was designed and simulated, and sensitivity optimization was performed on the array feed. It was shown that higher sensitivity can be achieved using a 7-element phased array feed than with a conventional waveguide feed. Simulations were ran …

Development Of Commercially Viable Compliant Mechanisms Using The Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model: Case Studies Of Parallel Mechanisms, Christopher A. Mattson, Larry L. Howell, Spencer P. Magleby Mar 2004

Development Of Commercially Viable Compliant Mechanisms Using The Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model: Case Studies Of Parallel Mechanisms, Christopher A. Mattson, Larry L. Howell, Spencer P. Magleby

Faculty Publications

Analysis and synthesis of compliant mechanisms has recently been the subject of significant study in the research community. This focus has led to a number of design approaches for developing compliant mechanisms. This paper describes the value of using the Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model (PRBM) to design compliant mechanisms for commercial products. Application of the PRBM is illustrated through the development of two parallel mechanisms: a bicycle derailleur and parallel-motion bicycle brakes. The PRBM allows compliant mechanisms to be modeled and analyzed as rigid-body mechanisms and significantly reduces the complexity of analysis. Mechanisms with straightforward properties are used to demonstrate the use …

Analysis Of Electromagnetic Field Polarizations In Multi-Antenna Systems, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace, Thomas Svantesson Mar 2004

Analysis Of Electromagnetic Field Polarizations In Multi-Antenna Systems, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace, Thomas Svantesson

Faculty Publications

This paper provides an analytical framework useful for assessing the use of all six electric and magnetic electromagnetic field polarizations for multiantenna communications systems. The approach uses a mapping between the induced signal currents and the received electromagnetic field in order to formulate a diversity interpretation of the six-polarization problem. Application of the framework to a simple, yet representative, channel model demonstrates that for full multipath elevation and azimuthal angle spread, six communication modes are theoretically possible. However, to implement the system requires more antenna design work since a straightforward implementation is found to reduce the potential number of modes …

Effects Of Friction Stir Welding On Polymer Microstructure, Seth R. Strand Feb 2004

Effects Of Friction Stir Welding On Polymer Microstructure, Seth R. Strand

Theses and Dissertations

This work establishes the relationships between several key Friction Stir Welding process parameters and the resulting microstructural and flexural properties of the welded joint. A series of four single parameter experiments were run. The parameters investigated were pin diameter, feedrate, shoe temperature, and pressure time. Butt welds were made in 6 mm thick stress-relieved extruded polypropylene sheet. Three-point bend tests were used to determine the ultimate flexural strength and coincident strain. The maximum bend angle before failure was used to label the welds as "good or bad." An optical microscope capable of cross polarization was used to examine and photograph …
