Fuel-Nox Formation During Low-Grade Fuel Combustion In A Swirling-Flow Burner, Chunyang Wu Jan 2006

Fuel-Nox Formation During Low-Grade Fuel Combustion In A Swirling-Flow Burner, Chunyang Wu

Theses and Dissertations

Insufficient knowledge of fireside behavior in the near-burner region during biomass combustion is one of major factors preventing widespread use of this renewable fuel in pulverized coal power plants. The current research is aimed to investigate the impact of biomass cofiring on NO formation in the near-burner region through interpretation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions and data collected from a series of biomass tests in a pilot-scale (0.2 MW), swirling flow burner. Two-dimensional gas species mole fraction data were collected with state-of-theart instruments from nine experiments, composing one herbaceous biomass (straw), one woody biomass (sawdust), a low sulfur sub-bituminous …

A Framework For An Implantable Wireless Pressure And Volume Sensor Focusing On The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Shunt Failure In Hydrocephalus Patients, Donald Monte Wichern Jan 2006

A Framework For An Implantable Wireless Pressure And Volume Sensor Focusing On The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Shunt Failure In Hydrocephalus Patients, Donald Monte Wichern

Theses and Dissertations

The framework for a permanently implantable wireless compliance sensor was developed and validated using laboratory experiments. The proposed sensor would measure the intracranial pressure and fluid volume in the brain and return this information to a monitoring device. The designed sensor received power remotely from the monitoring device negating the need for an implanted power source. Impedance measurement estimation techniques were suggested, studied and applied to the compliance sensing system. A new impedance measurement technique, accounting for multiple variability in the domain, was developed. An extensive simulation environment was designed and used to develop the laboratory experiments and hardware. The …

Lattice-Based Structures For Studying Percolation In Two-Dimensional Grain Networks, Brent L. Adams, John A. Basinger, David T. Fullwood Jan 2006

Lattice-Based Structures For Studying Percolation In Two-Dimensional Grain Networks, Brent L. Adams, John A. Basinger, David T. Fullwood

Faculty Publications

This work was supported primarily by the MRSEC program of the National Science Foundation under DMR-0079996. The applicability of standard lattice percolation models to a random 2-D grain structure is explored. A random network based on the triangle lattice is proposed as a more appropriate model, and results in a higher percolation threshold (0.711 compared with 0.653 for the standard hexagonal lattice). The triple junction constraint inherent in grain boundary structures is subsequently applied to the new network. This results in a lowering of the percolation threshold to 0.686; this is opposite to its effect on the standard hexagonal lattice. …

Satisficing Negotiations, Wynn C. Stirling, James K. Archibald, Jared C. Hill, F. Ryan Johnson Jan 2006

Satisficing Negotiations, Wynn C. Stirling, James K. Archibald, Jared C. Hill, F. Ryan Johnson

Faculty Publications

Negotiation procedures that are founded on the doctrine of individual rationality, where each participant is committed to maximizing its own satisfaction, are limited in their ability to accommodate the interests of others, and therefore, may unnecessarily constrain the negotiability of a decision maker, particularly in cooperative environments. Satisficing game theory provides a distinct alternative to the hyperrationality of conventional rational choice by waiving reliance on the individual rationality premise and offering an approach to negotiatory decision making that is based on a well-defined mathematical notion of satisficing, or being good enough, that permits the modeling of complex interrelationships between agents. …

Techniques In The Design Of Thermomechanical Microactuators, Larry L. Howell, Timothy W. Mclain, Michael S. Baker, Christian D. Lott Jan 2006

Techniques In The Design Of Thermomechanical Microactuators, Larry L. Howell, Timothy W. Mclain, Michael S. Baker, Christian D. Lott

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this chapter is to provide fundamental background for the design of thermomechanical microactuators. Actuation has been a particularly challenging aspect of microsystem development. Many actuation approaches used at the macro level, such as hydraulics, pneumatics, electric motors, internal combustion engines and turbines, are either too difficult to fabricate at the micro level or do not work well at that scale. Electrostatic attraction is one approach that has been widely used for actuation of microsystems; however, electrostatic actuators tend to have high voltage requirements and low output force capabilities. While electrostatic actuation is suitable for many applications, some …

Robust Design And Model Validation Of Nonlinear Compliant, Michael S. Baker, Larry Howell, Jonathan W. Walker Jan 2006

Robust Design And Model Validation Of Nonlinear Compliant, Michael S. Baker, Larry Howell, Jonathan W. Walker

Faculty Publications

Although the use of compliance or elastic flexibility in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) helps eliminate friction, wear, and backlash, compliant MEMS are known to be sensitive to variations in material properties and feature geometry, resulting in large uncertainties in performance. This paper proposes an approach for design stage uncertainty analysis, model validation, and robust optimization of nonlinear MEMS to account for critical process uncertainties including residual stress, layer thicknesses, edge bias, and material stiffness. A fully compliant bistable micromechanism (FCBM) is used as an example, demonstrating that the approach can be used to handle complex devices involving nonlinear finite element models. …

Quantification Of Doxorubicin Concentration In Rat Tissues Using Polymeric Micelles In Ultrasonic-Drug Delivery, William G. Pitt, Beverly Roeder, Bryant J. Staples Jan 2006

Quantification Of Doxorubicin Concentration In Rat Tissues Using Polymeric Micelles In Ultrasonic-Drug Delivery, William G. Pitt, Beverly Roeder, Bryant J. Staples

Faculty Publications

The triblock copolymer, Pluronic P105, has been found to be an ideal ultrasonically activated drug delivery vehicle because it forms micelles with hydrophobic polypropylene oxide cores that sequester hydrophobic drugs (Fig. 1). These micelles release their contents upon the application of low frequency ultrasound [1]such that drugs can be released specifically at the ultrasonicated region (Fig. 2). Such ultrasonically controlled release has been effective against cancer cells in vitro [2] and in vivo [3]. The purpose of this research is to assess the use of these novel polymeric micelles in ultrasonically-activated Doxorubicin® (DOX) delivery to tumors. This cancer therapy involves …

Microwave Observations Of Daily Antarctic Sea-Ice Edge Expansion And Contraction Rates, David G. Long, Jeffrey R. Allen Jan 2006

Microwave Observations Of Daily Antarctic Sea-Ice Edge Expansion And Contraction Rates, David G. Long, Jeffrey R. Allen

Faculty Publications

Algorithms for estimating sea-ice extent from remotely sensed microwave sensor data can benefit from knowledge of the "a priori" distribution of the daily expansion and contraction of the sea-ice pack. To estimate the probability distribution of daily Antarctic sea-ice extent change, two independent sea-ice datasets are analyzed: sea-ice extent derived from the QuikSCAT scatterometer and ice concentration estimates from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager. The daily sea-ice advance and retreat is tracked over a four-year period. The distribution of the daily sea-ice advance/retreat from each sensor is similar and is approximately double-exponential. Daily ice-pack statistics are presented.

This research was supported by NASA under STTR contract No. NNA04AA19C to Scientific Systems Company, Inc (SSCI) and Brigham Young University (BYU), and by AFOSR grants F49620-01-1-0091 and F49620-02-C- 0094. The objective of this paper is to explore the feasibility of using multiple low-altitude, short endurance (LASE) unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) to cooperatively monitor and track the propagation of large forest fires. A real-time algorithm for tracking the perimeter of a fire with an on-board infrared sensor is developed. Using this algorithm, we develop a decentralized multiple-UAV approach to monitoring the perimeter of the fire. The UAVs are assumed to …

Extending Taylor Plasticity Theory For Microscopic Slip Transfer Conditions, Brent L. Adams, Ray M. Merrill, John A. Basinger, Bassem S. El-Dasher Jan 2006

Extending Taylor Plasticity Theory For Microscopic Slip Transfer Conditions, Brent L. Adams, Ray M. Merrill, John A. Basinger, Bassem S. El-Dasher

Faculty Publications

This work was supported primarily by the MRSEC Program of the National Science Foundation under DMR-0079996. Most studies in crystal plasticity are based upon Taylor's original 1938 work. Within Taylor's framework the dependence of yield strength on microstructure, beyond lattice orientation, is carried within the critical resolved shear stress for slip. Thus, as the grain size decreases, the critical resolved shear stress is required to increase. This increase in critical resolved shear stress is applied, uniformly across the entire interior of the slipping grains according to the basic assumption of the model (uniform plastic strain or strain rate). It is …

Faculty Publications

This work was supported primarily by the MRSEC program of the National Science Foundation under Award Number DMR-0079996. Microstructure controls the properties of most useful materials. Thus an ability to control microstructure through the processing of materials is a key to optimization of materials performance. Most materials are polycrystalline and their grain structure is a very important aspect of their microstructure. Thanks to their complexity there is a great variety of grain boundary types even in relatively isotropic materials such as the cubic metals. Simply describing the crystallography requires five (macroscopic) parameters (e.g. disorientation and inclination). Evidently, acquiring a knowledge …

Reducing Energy In Fpga Multipliers Through Glitch Reduction - Clock Power And Digit-Serial Addendum, Nathaniel Rollins, Michael J. Wirthlin Jan 2006

Reducing Energy In Fpga Multipliers Through Glitch Reduction - Clock Power And Digit-Serial Addendum, Nathaniel Rollins, Michael J. Wirthlin

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: NASA. In a previous paper it was shown that reducing the amount of glitches in digital designs can significantly reduce the amount of dynamic power consumption. Pipelined multipliers and a bit-serial multiplier design were used to show this. The paper failed to mention how much of the dynamic power consumption was due to the clock distribution. Also the only digit- serial multiplier digit size investigated was a digit size of 1. This paper addresses the issue of dynamic clocking power and includes results of digit-serial multipliers with larger digit sizes.

Use Of Thermally Induced Higher Order Modes Of A Microcantilever For Mercury Vapor Detection, Gregory P. Nordin, Michael A. George, Ashwini R. Kadam Jan 2006

Use Of Thermally Induced Higher Order Modes Of A Microcantilever For Mercury Vapor Detection, Gregory P. Nordin, Michael A. George, Ashwini R. Kadam

Faculty Publications

We demonstrate the use of thermally induced higher order modes of a microcantilever as an alternate detection technique by studying Au-Hg interactions. The first four thermally induced flexural modes - i.e., the fundamental and first three higher order modes - have been examined for two different Au coatings. In the first case, 50 nm thick Au is sputter deposited along the entire length of a rectangular Si microcantilever. In the second case the Au is confined to a 30 µm length at the tip of the Si microcantilever. In both cases the microcantilever spectral response and deflection has been studied …

Predicted Redidual Strength Of Damaged Isotrussâ® Structures, Travis S. Carroll Dec 2005

Predicted Redidual Strength Of Damaged Isotrussâ® Structures, Travis S. Carroll

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis utilized a linear analytical approach to explore the damage tolerance or residual strength as a function of increasing damage in traditional single and hybrid-grid IsoTruss® structures. Residual strength was studied for structures subjected to axial compression, torsion and flexural bending, independently. Carbon/epoxy material properties were applied in all load cases, and fiberglass/epoxy material properties were also applied in the flexural bending case. Prior to imposing damage conditions, the IsoTruss® structures were parametrically optimized to achieve the highest strength-to-weight ratios. Typical compression strut, driveshaft, and utility pole specifications governed the design strength dimensions and boundary conditions. Damage growth was …

Fully Compliant Tensural Bistable Micro-Mechanisms (Ftbm), D. L. Wilcox, Larry L. Howell Dec 2005

Fully Compliant Tensural Bistable Micro-Mechanisms (Ftbm), D. L. Wilcox, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

A new class of bistable mechanisms, the fully compliant tensural bistable micromechanism (FTBM) class, is introduced. The class consists of linear bistable micromechanisms that undergo tension loads, in addition to the bending loads present, through their range of motion. Proof-of-concept designs fabricated in two different microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) surface micromachining processes were demonstrated. Three sets of refined designs within the FTBM class were designed using optimization methods linked with nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA), then fabricated and tested. Measured force and displacement performance are compared to values obtained by FEA. On-chip actuation of the bistable mechanisms was achieved using thermomechanical …

Statnamic Lateral Load Testing And Analysis Of A Drilled Shaft In Liquefied Sand, Seth I. Bowles Dec 2005

Statnamic Lateral Load Testing And Analysis Of A Drilled Shaft In Liquefied Sand, Seth I. Bowles

Theses and Dissertations

Three progressively larger statnamic lateral load tests were performed on a 2.59 m diameter drilled shaft foundation after the surrounding soil was liquefied using down-hole explosive charges. An attempt to develop p-y curves from strain data along the pile was made. Due to low quality and lack of strain data, p-y curves along the test shaft could not be reliably determined. Therefore, the statnamic load tests were analyzed using a ten degree-of-freedom model of the pile-soil system to determine the equivalent static load-deflection curve for each test. The equivalent static load-deflection curves had shapes very similar to that obtained from …

A Detailed Approach For Concept Generation And Evaluation In A Technology Push Product Development Environment, Andrew Nelson Dec 2005

A Detailed Approach For Concept Generation And Evaluation In A Technology Push Product Development Environment, Andrew Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Many companies rely on successful product development as a means to increase their revenues and expand their operations. Market pull, the most common form of product development, begins with a specific customer, and focuses on how to satisfy that customer's needs. Technology push is a product development process where a technology is first discovered, then embodied in products that may be marketed to specific customers. Technology push presents several obstacles not encountered in market pull processes, such as a lack of a defined market, lack of established processes and difficulty in execution. These complications keep technology push from being more …

Performance Analysis Of Common Detectors For Shaped Offset Qpsk And Feher's Qpsk, Tom Nelson, Michael D. Rice, Erik Perrins

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: US Air Force Grant FA9302-05-C-0001. A detector architecture capable of detecting both shaped offset quadrature phase shift keying (SOQPSK-TG) and Feher's quadrature phase shift keying (FQPSK-JR) is developed and analyzed. Both modulations are embodied as fully interoperable modulations in the Interrange Instrumentation Group (IRIG) standard IRIG-106. It is shown that the common detector achieves near optimal bit error rate performance without knowledge of which modulation is used by the transmitter. The detection techniques are based on a common trellis-coded modulation representation and a common continuous phase modulation (CPM) representation for these two modulations. In addition the common pulse amplitude …

Modeling Microwave Emissions Of Erg Surfaces In The Sahara Desert, David G. Long, Haroon Stephen Dec 2005

Modeling Microwave Emissions Of Erg Surfaces In The Sahara Desert, David G. Long, Haroon Stephen

Faculty Publications

Sand seas (ergs) of the Sahara are the most dynamic parts of the desert. Aeolian erosion, transportation, and deposition continue to reshape the surface of the ergs. The large-scale features (dunes) of these bedforms reflect the characteristics of the sand and the long-term wind. Radiometric emissions from the ergs have strong dependence on the surface geometry. We model the erg surface as composed of tilted rough facets. Each facet is characterized by a tilt distribution dependent upon the surface roughness of the facet. The radiometric temperature (Tb) of ergs is then the weighted sum of the Tb from all the …

Preliminary Design Approach For Prosthetic Ankle Joints Using Compliant Mechanisms, Jason Matthew Wiersdorf Dec 2005

Preliminary Design Approach For Prosthetic Ankle Joints Using Compliant Mechanisms, Jason Matthew Wiersdorf

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to develop design approaches and models for prosthetic ankle joints using kinematic models of the human ankle and compliant mechanisms technology. Compliant mechanisms offer several potential design advantages over traditional rigid-body designs including high reliability and low cost. These design advantages are ideal for use in prosthetics. Some prosthetic ankle/foot systems currently on the market have multiple degrees of freedom yet are expensive. Additionally, even though these systems have multiple degrees of freedom, none of them are designed after the actual movements of the biological ankle. In this thesis a two, single degree-of-freedom hinge …

An Analysis Of Seawinds-Based Rain Retrieval In Severe Weather Events, David G. Long, Jeffrey R. Allen Dec 2005

An Analysis Of Seawinds-Based Rain Retrieval In Severe Weather Events, David G. Long, Jeffrey R. Allen

Faculty Publications

The Ku-band SeaWinds scatterometer estimates near-surface ocean wind vectors by relating measured backscatter to a geophysical model function for the near-surface vector wind. The conventional wind retrieval algorithm does not explicitly account for SeaWinds' sensitivity to rain, resulting in rain-caused wind retrieval error. A new retrieval method, termed "simultaneous wind/rain retrieval," that estimates both wind and rain from rain-contaminated measurements has been previously proposed and validated with Tropical Rain Measuring Mission data. Here, the accuracy of rains retrieved by the new method is validated through comparison with the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) in coastal storm events. The rains detected …

A New Method For The Rapid Calculation Of Finely-Gridded Reservoir Simulation Pressures, Benjamin Arik Hardy Nov 2005

A New Method For The Rapid Calculation Of Finely-Gridded Reservoir Simulation Pressures, Benjamin Arik Hardy

Theses and Dissertations

A new method for the determination of finely-gridded reservoir simulation pressures has been developed. It is estimated to be as much as hundreds to thousands of times faster than other methods for very large reservoir simulation grids. The method extends the work of Weber et al. Weber demonstrated accuracies for the pressure solution normally requiring millions of cells using traditional finite-difference equations with only hundreds of cells. This was accomplished through the use of finite-difference equations that incorporate the physics of the flow. Although these coarse-grid solutions achieve accuracies normally requiring orders of magnitude more resolution, their coarse resolution does …
