Vision-Assisted Control Of A Hovering Air Vehicle In An Indoor Setting, Neil G. Johnson
Vision-Assisted Control Of A Hovering Air Vehicle In An Indoor Setting, Neil G. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The quadrotor helicopter is a unique flying vehicle which uses the thrust from four motors to provide hover flight capability. The uncoupled nature of the longitudinal and lateral axes and its ability to support large payloads with respect to its size make it an attractive vehicle for autonomous vehicle research. In this thesis, the quadrotor is modeled based on first principles and a proportional-derivative control method is applied for attitude stabilization and position control. A unique means of using an optic flow sensor for velocity and position estimation in an indoor setting is presented with flight results. Reliable hover flight …

Development And Characterization Of Friction Bit Joining: A New Solid State Spot Joining Technology Applied To Dissimilar Al/Steel Joints, Brandon Raymond Siemssen
Theses and Dissertations
Friction bit joining (FBJ) is a new solid-state spot joining technology developed in cooperation between Brigham Young University of Provo Utah, and MegaStir Technologies of West Bountiful Utah. Although capable of joining several different material combinations, this research focuses on the application of FBJ to joining 5754 aluminum to DP 980 steel, two alloys commonly used in automotive applications. The thicknesses of the materials used were 0.070 inches (1.78 mm) and 0.065 inches (1.65 mm), respectively. The FBJ process employs a consumable 4140 steel bit and is carried out on a purpose built research machine. In the first stage of …
A Surveillance System To Create And Distribute Geo-Referenced Mosaics Using Suav Video, Evan D. Andersen
A Surveillance System To Create And Distribute Geo-Referenced Mosaics Using Suav Video, Evan D. Andersen
Theses and Dissertations
Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (SUAVs) are an attractive choice for many surveillance tasks. However, video from an SUAV can be difficult to use in its raw form. In addition, the limitations inherent in the SUAV platform inhibit the distribution of video to remote users. To solve the problems with using SUAV video, we propose a system to automatically create geo-referenced mosiacs of video frames. We also present three novel techniques we have developed to improve ortho-rectification and geo-location accuracy of the mosaics. The most successful of these techniques is able to reduce geo-location error by a factor of 15 with …
An Optimization-Based Framework For Designing Robust Cam-Based Constant-Force Compliant Mechanisms, John Christian Meaders
An Optimization-Based Framework For Designing Robust Cam-Based Constant-Force Compliant Mechanisms, John Christian Meaders
Theses and Dissertations
Constant-force mechanisms are mechanical devices that provide a near-constant output force over a prescribed deflection range. This thesis develops various optimization-based methods for designing robust constant-force mechanisms. The configuration of the mechanisms that are the focus of this research comprises a cam and a compliant spring fixed at one end while making contact with the cam at the other end. This configuration has proven to be an innovative solution in several applications because of its simplicity in manufacturing and operation. In this work, several methods are introduced to design these mechanisms, and reduce the sensitivity of these mechanisms to manufacturing …
Monitoring The Antarctic Ice Sheet From Space, Benjamin Rule Lambert
Monitoring The Antarctic Ice Sheet From Space, Benjamin Rule Lambert
Theses and Dissertations
The Antarctic ice sheet is a geophysically - and in an age of growing concern about global warming, geopolitically - important portion of Earth. The composition and dynamics of the Antarctic ice sheet influence global climate patterns, global sea level and the planet's radiation budget. Recent evidence also suggests that the long term stability of portions of the ice sheet may be in jeopardy. In this thesis I use data from three Ku-band space-borne scatterometers to monitor changes in the backscatter signature of the Antarctic ice sheet from 1978 through 2007. Significant changes in backscatter, which result from geophysical changes …
Material Flow Behavior In Friction Stir Welding, Brian C. Liechty
Material Flow Behavior In Friction Stir Welding, Brian C. Liechty
Theses and Dissertations
Material flow in friction stir welding is largely uncharacterized due to the difficulty in material flow measurement and visualization in metals. This study investigates plasticine for use as an analog for modeling material flow in friction stir welding (FSW) of metals. Qualitative comparisons between welded plasticine and metal sections exhibit many similarities. The transient temperature response of the plasticine also shows the same qualitative behavior as welds conducted in metal. To quantify its similarity to metal, the plasticine is further analyzed through compression tests to characterize its strain, strain-rate, and temperature sensitivities. A detailed analysis is presented which defines the …
Efficiencies And System Temperature For A Beamforming Array, Karl F. Warnick, Brian D. Jeffs
Efficiencies And System Temperature For A Beamforming Array, Karl F. Warnick, Brian D. Jeffs
Faculty Publications
For an active beamforming array, standard definitions for efficiencies and system temperature are not available. We use noise considerations to generalize the single-antenna conventions for aperture efficiency, spillover efficiency, radiation efficiency, and system temperature to arrays. The treatment leads to a new noise matching efficiency that quantifies the effect of mutual coupling on amplifier noise. Numerical results for a phased array feed indicate that the noise increase caused by mutual coupling can be significant.

Minimizing The Noise Penalty Due To Mutual Coupling For A Receiving Array, Karl F. Warnick, Leonid Belostotski, Peter Russer
Faculty Publications
For phased array receivers, mutual coupling leads to beam-dependent effective impedances at array element ports. Front end amplifiers can be matched for optimal noise performance for one beam steering direction, but noise performance becomes poor at other steering directions. We analyze this noise penalty in terms of beam equivalent noise temperature for various amplifier noise matching conditions, and develop a new matching condition that minimizes the average beam equivalent receiver noise temperature over multiple beams. For non-beamforming applications such as MIMO communications, we show that noise performance for coupled arrays can be quantified using the spectrum of an available receiver …
Adaptive Quaternion Control Of A Miniature Tailsitter Uav, Nathan B. Knoebel, Timothy W. Mclain
Adaptive Quaternion Control Of A Miniature Tailsitter Uav, Nathan B. Knoebel, Timothy W. Mclain
Faculty Publications
The miniature tailsitter is a unique aircraft with inherent advantages over typical unmanned aerial vehicles. With the capabilities of both hover and level flight, these small, portable systems can produce efficient maneuvers for enhanced surveillance and autonomy with little threat to surroundings and the system itself. Such vehicles create control challenges due to the two different flight regimes. These challenges are addressed with a computationally efficient adaptive quaternion control algorithm. A backstepping method for model cancellation and consistent tracking of reference model attitude dynamics is derived. This is used in conjunction with a regularized data-weighting recursive least-squares algorithm for the …

Nano-Polymeric Carrier Influences Ultrasonic Drug Delivery To Tumors, Odgerel Badamjav, Ghaleb A. Husseini, Peter Jones, William G. Pitt, Beverly L. Roeder
Faculty Publications
Our overall research goal is to alleviate the severe side effects of chemotherapy while enhancing the effectiveness of the treatment by localizing the delivery of anti-cancer drugs to the cancer tissue only. To this end we are synthesizing ultrasonically-activated delivery systems that can control drug delivery in space and time. Ultrasound (US) is non-invasive (no surgery required) and can be focused on the specific tissue to be treated. Our past research has developed a nano-sized polymeric drug carrier that sequesters the therapeutic drug, such as Doxorubicin (Dox), within the carrier and releases the drug upon insonation by ultrasound. This drug-containing …

Evaluation Of Laboratory Durability Tests For Stabilized Subgrade Soils, John Wesley Parker
Theses and Dissertations
The Portland Cement Association commissioned a research project at Brigham Young University to compare selected laboratory durability tests available for assessing stabilized subgrade materials. Improved understanding of these tests is needed to enable more objective selection of durability tests by design engineers and to facilitate more meaningful comparisons of data obtained for different stabilizer treatments using different evaluation procedures. The laboratory research associated with this project involved two subgrade materials, four stabilizers at three concentrations each, and three durability tests in a full-factorial experimental design. The two subgrade soils used were a silty sand and a lean clay, while the …

Near Optimal Common Detection Techniques For Shaped Offset Qpsk And Feher's Qpsk, Tom Nelson, Michael D. Rice, Erik Perrins
Faculty Publications
This paper compares three candidate detection techniques for shaped offset QPSK (SOQPSK-TG) and Feher's QPSK (FQPSK-JR) modulations which are embodied as fully interoperable modulations in the Interrange Instrumentation Group standard IRIG-106. The techniques are based on a common trellis-coded modulation representation and a common continuous phase modulation (CPM) representation for these two modulations. In addition the pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) decomposition of the common CPM representation is developed. All three techniques achieve near-optimal bit error rate performance. The PAM-based detector offers the best performance-complexity trade-off.
Impact Of Jet Grouting On The Lateral Strength Of Soil Surrounding Driven Pile Foundations, Matthew E. Adsero
Impact Of Jet Grouting On The Lateral Strength Of Soil Surrounding Driven Pile Foundations, Matthew E. Adsero
Theses and Dissertations
Jet grouting was used to strengthen the soft soil surrounding the piles and the pile cap of two full-scale driven pile foundations. Soilcrete columns, created by jet grouting, were placed underneath the pile cap and surrounding the piles of the first foundation. Two rows of soilcrete columns were placed around the perimeter of one-side of the second. All of the jet grouting took place after construction of the pile caps. Laboratory testing of the soilcrete slurry showed the columns as having a design unconfined compressive strength of 550-650 psi, compared with the native soil strength of only 6-8 psi (850-1150 …

Stabilization And Control Of A Quad-Rotor Micro-Uav Using Vision Sensors, Spencer G. Fowers
Theses and Dissertations
Quad-rotor micro-UAVs have become an important tool in the field of indoor UAV research. Indoor flight poses problems not experienced in outdoor applications. The ability to be location- and movement-aware is paramount because of the close proximity of obstacles (walls, doorways, desks). The Helio-copter, an indoor quad-rotor platform that utilizes a compact FPGA board called Helios has been developed in the Robotic Vision Lab at Brigham Young University. Helios allows researchers to perform on-board vision processing and feature tracking without the aid of a ground station or wireless transmission. Using this on-board feature tracking system a drift stabilization control system …

Measurements And Modeling Of Coal Ash Deposition In An Entrained-Flow Reactor, Ryan P. Blanchard
Theses and Dissertations
Coal plays a significant role in meeting the world's need for energy and will continue to do so for many years to come. Economic, environmental, and public opinion are requiring coal derived energy to be cleaner and operate in a more narrow window of operating conditions. Fouling and slagging of heat transfer surfaces continues to be a challenge for maintaining boiler availability and expanding the use of available fuels and operating conditions. The work incorporates existing information in the literature on ash deposition into a User-Defined Function (UDF) for a commercial comprehensive combustion and CFD code. Results from the new …
Parametric Optimization Design System For A Fluid Domain Assembly, Matthew Jackson Fisher
Parametric Optimization Design System For A Fluid Domain Assembly, Matthew Jackson Fisher
Theses and Dissertations
Automated solid modeling, integrated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and optimization of a 3D jet turbine engine has never been accomplished. This is due mainly to the computational power required, and the lack of associative parametric modeling tools and techniques necessary to adjust and optimize the design. As an example, the fluid domain of a simple household fan with three blades may contain 500,000 elements per blade passage. Therefore, a complete turbine engine that includes many stages, with sets of thirty or more blades each, will have hundreds of millions of elements. The fluid domains associated with each blade creates …
Development Of A Miniature Vtol Tail-Sitter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Jeffrey V. Hogge
Development Of A Miniature Vtol Tail-Sitter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Jeffrey V. Hogge
Theses and Dissertations
The design, analysis, construction and flight testing of a miniature Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) tail-sitter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) prototype is presented in detail. Classic aircraft design methods were combined with numerical analysis to estimate the aircraft performance and flight characteristics. The numerical analysis employed a propeller blade-element theory coupled with momentum equations to predict the influence of a propeller slipstream on the freestream flow field, then the aircraft was analyzed using 3-D vortex lifting-line theory to model finite wings immersed in the flow field. Four prototypes were designed, built, and tested and the evolution of these prototypes is …
Nrcs Curve Number Calibration Using Usgs Regression Equations, Charlotte M. Mecham
Nrcs Curve Number Calibration Using Usgs Regression Equations, Charlotte M. Mecham
Theses and Dissertations
The Curve Number (CN) method of estimating the direct runoff response to rainfall events was originally developed in the 1950's primarily for agricultural purposes in the mid-western United States. The accuracy of the CN method is greatly affected by variation of the soil type and land use of the region. Curve Numbers developed for a given region are not appropriate for application in other regions. In order to produce reliable, consistent results, Curve Numbers must be calibrated for the area in which the CN method is to be applied. Calibration is ideally accomplished by direct measurement using several rain and …

Exploring The Common Design Space Of Dissimilar Assembly Parameterizations For Interdisciplinary Design, Brady M. Larson
Theses and Dissertations
The use of parametric CAD models in engineering, analysis, and optimization has greatly enhanced the effectiveness and efficiency of the product development process. Parametric models provide an attractive avenue for expansive design exploration. There still exists, however, a great challenge for products requiring design input from multiple disciplines. The collaboration of engineering disciplines can be hampered by many factors including: competing design objectives, communication of design changes, the use of different design and analysis software, and different geometry definitions. These obstacles become compounded when developing products at the assembly level. The use of solid parametric assembly models is not readily …
Generating Cad Parametric Features Based On Topology Optimization Results, William R. Blattman
Generating Cad Parametric Features Based On Topology Optimization Results, William R. Blattman
Theses and Dissertations
Shape optimization has become an important tool in industry to minimize weight and generate new designs. At the same time, companies are turning to CAD-centric design strategies where robust parametric CAD models are used to generate new designs and part-families of current designs, as well as the tooling and manufacturing procedures. However, due to its complexity, the optimal topology results are often discarded or recreated by hand into a CAD model. From a design stand point, the results can be improved with the use of manufacturing constraints on the shape optimization process. These constraints improve the manufacturability based on common …

Numerical Analysis Of Passive Force On Skewed Bridgeabutments With Reinforced Concrete Wingwalls, Scott Karl Snow
Theses and Dissertations
Numerical Analysis of Passive Force on Skewed BridgeAbutments with Reinforced Concrete WingwallsScott Karl SnowDepartment of Civil and Environmental Engineering, BYU Master of Science Historically bridges with skewed abutments have proven more likely to fail during earthquake loadings (Toro et al, 2013) when compared to non-skewed bridges (Apirakvorapinit et al. 2012; Elnashai et al. 2010). Previous studies including small-scale laboratory tests by Jessee (2012), large-scale field tests by Smith (2014), and numerical modeling by Shamsabadi et al. (2006) have shown that 45° skewed bridge abutments experience a reduction in peak passive force by about 65%. With numerous skewed bridges in the …

Compact Waveguide Splitter Networks, Seunghyun Kim, Gregory P. Nordin, Weisheng Hu, Yusheng Qian, Jiguo Song
Faculty Publications
We demonstrate compact waveguide splitter networks in siliconon-insulator (SOI) rib waveguides using trench-based splitters (TBSs) and bends (TBBs). Rather than a 90° geometry, we use 105° TBSs to facilitate reliable fabrication of high aspect ratio trenches suitable for 50/50 splitting when filled with SU8. Three dimensional (3D) finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation is used for splitter and bend design. Measured TBB and TBS optical efficiencies are 84% and 68%, respectively. Compact 105° 1 x 4, 1 x 8, and 1 x 32 trench-based splitter networks (TBSNs) are demonstrated. The measured total optical loss of the 1 x 32 TBSN …
Impact Of Mass Mixing On The Lateral Resistance Of Driven-Pile Foundations, Mark Alan Herbst
Impact Of Mass Mixing On The Lateral Resistance Of Driven-Pile Foundations, Mark Alan Herbst
Theses and Dissertations
Although it has been established that in-situ soil mixing has improved the bearing capacity of soils, additional research is needed to better understand the effect of soil mixing on lateral resistance of pile caps. To do this, in-situ soil mixing was used to strengthen weak clay adjacent to a pile cap of a driven pile foundation. The mass stabilization method or mass mixing was used to treat an 11 ft wide, 4 ft thick, and 10 ft deep zone consisting of an average 475 psf clay that was adjacent to a 9-pile group in 3x3 pile configuration capped with a …
Characterization Of Synthetic, Self-Oscillating Vocal Fold Models, James S. Drechsel
Characterization Of Synthetic, Self-Oscillating Vocal Fold Models, James S. Drechsel
Theses and Dissertations
The vocal folds are essential for speech production, and a better understanding of vocal fold vibration characteristics may help improve treatments of voice disorders. However, studying real vocal folds presents significant challenges. In-vivo studies are limited by access and safety issues. Excised larynges have a short useable lifetime (on the order of minutes) and are difficult to parameterize. In contrast, synthetic vocal fold models have long useable lifetimes and can be easily parameterized. In this thesis, a series of tests performed on recently developed synthetic, self-oscillating models of the human vocal folds are discussed. These tests include measurements of vibration …
Liquefaction Mitigation Using Vertical Composite Drains And Liquefaction Induced Downdrag On Piles: Implications For Deep Foundation Design, Spencer R. Strand
Liquefaction Mitigation Using Vertical Composite Drains And Liquefaction Induced Downdrag On Piles: Implications For Deep Foundation Design, Spencer R. Strand
Theses and Dissertations
Deep foundations constructed in liquefiable soils require specialized design. The design engineer of such foundations must consider the effects of liquefaction on the foundation and overlying structure, such as excessive settlement, loss of skin friction at the soil-pile interface, and the development of downdrag on the pile. Controlled blasting was employed to liquefy a loose, saturated sand in order to test the liquefaction prevention capabilities of full-scale, vertical composite earthquake (EQ) drains and to investigate the development of downdrag on full-scale test piles. Blasting produced liquefaction at a test site without EQ drains which eventually resulted in 270 mm of …
Automated Quadrilateral Coarsening By Ring Collapse, Mark William Dewey
Automated Quadrilateral Coarsening By Ring Collapse, Mark William Dewey
Theses and Dissertations
In most finite element analysis, a uniform mesh is not the optimum way to model the problem. Mesh adaptation is the ability to modify a finite element model to include regions of the mesh with higher and lower node density. Mesh adaptation has received extensive study in both computational mechanics and computer graphics to increase the resolution or accuracy of the solution in specific areas. The algorithm developed in this thesis, the Automated Quadrilateral Coarsening by Ring Collapse (AQCRC) algorithm, provides a unique solution to allow conformal coarsening of both structured and unstructured quadrilateral finite element meshes. The algorithm is …
Parallel Processing Of Reactive Transport Models Using Openmp, Jared D. Mclaughlin
Parallel Processing Of Reactive Transport Models Using Openmp, Jared D. Mclaughlin
Theses and Dissertations
Transport codes are beginning to be parallelized in order to allow more complex add-ons, such as geochemical packages, to utilize finer, more accurate grids, and to reduce solution times making stochastic and Monte Carlo simulations more feasible. Most codes parallelized via MPI (message passing interface) offer good results, but require the development of a new parallel code. OpenMP, the shared-memory standard, offers incremental parallelization, allowing sequential codes to remain relatively intact with minimal changes or additions. OpenMP allows speedup to be seen on personal computers with dual processors or greater, unlike some other parallelization approaches that require a supercomputer. An …
