Uav Path-Planning Using Bézier Curves And A Receding Horizon Approach, Bryce Ingersoll, Kyle Ingersoll, Patrick Defranco, Andrew Ning Jun 2016

Uav Path-Planning Using Bézier Curves And A Receding Horizon Approach, Bryce Ingersoll, Kyle Ingersoll, Patrick Defranco, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are used in an increasing number of applications. Such applications may include navigating through heavy traffic and highly congested airways, where numerous static and dynamic obstacles impinge upon a UAV's flight. It is imperative that a UAV successfully avoids these obstacles, while improving its planned flight path according to certain criteria. We have modeled UAV path planning as a single objective optimization problem that utilizes a receding horizon approach, where the path is constrained to avoid obstacle collision and to account for flight aerodynamic constraints. The proposed method is gradient based, allowing for quick and robust …

Implementations Of Fourier Methods In Cfd To Analyze Distortion Transfer And Generation Through A Transonic Fan, Marshall Warren Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

Inlet flow distortion is a non-uniform total pressure, total temperature, or swirl (flow angularity) condition at an aircraft engine inlet. Inlet distortion is a critical consideration in modern fan and compressor design. This is especially true as the industry continues to increase the efficiency and operating range of air breathing gas turbine engines. The focus of this paper is to evaluate the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Harmonic Balance (HB) solver in STAR-CCM+ as a reduced order method for capturing inlet distortion as well as the associated distortion transfer and generation. New methods for quantitatively describing and analyzing distortion transfer and …

Friction Bit Joining Of Dissimilar Combinations Of Gadp 1180 Steel And Aa 7085 – T76 Aluminum, Lorne Steele Atwood

Theses and Dissertations

Friction Bit Joining (FBJ) is a method used to join lightweight metals to advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). The automotive industry is experiencing pressure to improve fuel efficiency in their vehicles. The use of AHSS and aluminum will reduce vehicle weight which will assist in reducing fuel consumption. Previous research achieved joint strengths well above that which was required in three out of the four standard joint strength tests using DP980 AHSS and 7075 aluminum. The joints were mechanically tested and passed the lap-shear tension, cross-tension, and fatigue cycling tests. The t-peel test configuration never passed the minimum requirements. The purpose …

Heteromorphic To Homeomorphic Shape Match Conversion Toward Fully Automated Mesh Morphing To Match Manufactured Geometry, Robert Ivan Yorgason Jun 2016

Heteromorphic To Homeomorphic Shape Match Conversion Toward Fully Automated Mesh Morphing To Match Manufactured Geometry, Robert Ivan Yorgason

Theses and Dissertations

The modern engineering design process includes computer software packages that require approximations to be made when representing geometries. These approximations lead to inherent discrepancies between the design geometry of a part or assembly and the corresponding manufactured geometry. Further approximations are made during the analysis portion of the design process. Manufacturing defects can also occur, which increase the discrepancies between the design and manufactured geometry. These approximations combined with manufacturing defects lead to discrepancies which, for high precision parts, such as jet engine compressor blades, can affect the modal analysis results. In order to account for the manufacturing defects during …

Reservoir Sedimentation: The Economics Of Sustainability, Matthew William George Jun 2016

Reservoir Sedimentation: The Economics Of Sustainability, Matthew William George

Theses and Dissertations

Despite mounting demand for a more sustainable worldwide water supply system, available reservoir capacity is relentlessly diminishing due to sedimentation. This fact, coupled with a decrease in the rate of dam construction, indicate an impending water supply dilemma. In the future, dams should be designed following a life cycle management approach rather than the typical short-sighted design life technique.Neither sustainable reservoir lifespans nor intergenerational equity is achieved through conventional cost-benefit analyses (CBA), which render all benefits and costs projected to occur more than several decades into a project as negligible. Consequently, future expenditures, including dam decommissioning or retrofitting with sediment …

Calibration Of Rapidscat Over-Land Σ0, Forrest Dayton Minor Jun 2016

Calibration Of Rapidscat Over-Land Σ0, Forrest Dayton Minor

Theses and Dissertations

RapidScat is a Ku-band radar that measures the normalized backscatter coefficient σ0 of the Earth's surface. Launched in 2015, it currently operates on the International Space Station. Nearly one year into its mission, RapidScat measurements began exhibiting strange behavior that is believed to be caused by a change in receiver gain. Changes in gain are compensated for during post-processing, but the measurements have a lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Calibration and validation of σ0 measurements from this low SNR state are performed using extended land targets with various signal strengths. Study areas include the Amazon rainforest, Congo rainforest, Argentina …

High Density 3d Printed Microfluidic Valves, Pumps, And Multiplexers, Hua Gong, Adam T. Woolley, Gregory P. Nordin

Faculty Publications

In this paper we demonstrate that 3D printing with a Digital Light Processor stereolithographic (DLP-SLA) 3D printer can be used to create high density microfluidic devices with active components such as valves and pumps. Leveraging our previous work on optical formulation of inexpensive resins (RSC Adv. 5, 106621, 2015), we demonstrate valves with only 10% of the volume of our original 3D printed valves (Biomicrofluidics 9, 016501, 2015), which were already the smallest that have been reported. Moreover, we show that inclusion of a thermal initiator in the resin formulation along with a post-print bake can dramatically improve the durability …

Relative Navigation In Gps Degraded Environments, Timothy Mclain, David Wheeler, Paul W. Nyholm, Daniel P. Koch, Gary J. Ellingson, Benjamin J. Lewis, Randall W. Beard May 2016

Relative Navigation In Gps Degraded Environments, Timothy Mclain, David Wheeler, Paul W. Nyholm, Daniel P. Koch, Gary J. Ellingson, Benjamin J. Lewis, Randall W. Beard

Faculty Publications

For unmanned aircraft systems to become fully integrated into society, safe and reliable methods for estimation and control are required even when global measurements such as GPS are degraded or unavailable. In these situations, estimating the vehicle's global state directly leads to inaccuracy and inconsistency. The relative navigation framework avoids these issues by estimating the vehicle's state with respect to a current local coordinate frame associated with a visual odometry algorithm. A globally consistent and localized pose-graph map is produced by compounding these local estimates and opportunistically incorporating additional constraints such as GPS measurements and loop closures. This architecture increases …

Order Reduction Of Dae Models, John Hedengren, Thomas F. Edgar May 2016

Order Reduction Of Dae Models, John Hedengren, Thomas F. Edgar

Faculty Publications

This report outlines a technique for the order reduction of differential algebraic equations (DAEs). The order reduction is accomplished in two steps. First, algebraic states are partitioned into successive implicit sets of variables and equations by reconstructing the sparsity pattern into lower triangular block form. Second, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is used to reduce the number of differential states. As a test case for the theory, a dynamic binary distillation column model is analyzed with the generalized approach. The index 1 DAE model of 52 differential and 178 algebraic states is reduced to an ODE model of 26 differential states.

Finite Element Modeling Of Shallowly Embedded Connections To Characterize Rotational Stiffness, Trevor Alexander Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Finite element models were created in Abaqus 6.14 to characterize the rotational stiffness of shallowly embedded column-foundation connections. Scripts were programmed to automate the model generation process and allow study of multiple independent variables, including embedment length, column size, baseplate geometry, concrete modulus, column orientation, cantilever height, and applied axial load. Three different connection types were investigated: a tied or one part model; a contact-based model; and a cohesive-zone based model. Cohesive-zone modeling was found to give the most accurate results. Agreement with previous experimental data was obtained to within 27%. Baseplate geometry was found to affect connection stiffness significantly, …

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast For Detect And Avoid On Small Unmanned Aircraft, Matthew Owen Duffield May 2016

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast For Detect And Avoid On Small Unmanned Aircraft, Matthew Owen Duffield

Theses and Dissertations

Small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are rapidly gaining popularity. As the excitement surrounding small UAS has grown, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has repeatedly stated that UAS must be capable of detecting and avoiding manned and unmanned aircraft. In developing detect-and-avoid (DAA) technology, one of the key challenges is identifying a suitable sensor. Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) has gained much attention in both the research and consumer sectors as a promising solution. While ADS-B has many positive characteristics, further analysis is necessary to determine if it is suitable as a DAA sensor in environments with high-density small UAS operations. To …

Error Propagation Dynamics Of Piv-Based Pressure Field Calculation, Zhao Pan May 2016

Error Propagation Dynamics Of Piv-Based Pressure Field Calculation, Zhao Pan

Theses and Dissertations

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) based pressure field calculation is becoming increasingly popular in experimental fluid dynamics due to its non-intrusive nature. Errors propagated from PIV results to pressure field calculations are unavoidable, and in most cases, non-negligible. However, the specific dynamics of this error propagation process have not been unveiled. This dissertation examines both why and how errors in the experimental data are propagated to the pressure field by direct analysis of the pressure Poisson equation. Error in the pressure calculations are bounded with the error level of the experimental data. The error bounds quantitatively explain why and how many …

Electrical And Manufacturing Limitations For The Miniaturization Of Ion Trap Devices With Digital Excitation, Derek Joseph Andrews May 2016

Electrical And Manufacturing Limitations For The Miniaturization Of Ion Trap Devices With Digital Excitation, Derek Joseph Andrews

Theses and Dissertations

Developing portable mass spectrometry systems is an active area of research due to its broad range of useful applications, including environmental monitoring, threat detection, and space exploration. The mass analyzer is one of the key elements of the mass spectrometry system to develop for a portable system. Ion traps are a good candidate for the mass analyzer in a portable mass spectrometry system because the operating pressure scales with size. This allows for scaling down the other components of the system including the vacuum and electrical systems. Researchers at BYU are making an effort to develop miniature ion traps based …

Theses and Dissertations

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an imaging modality that acquires an image with little to no damage to the tissue. MRI does not introduce foreign particles or high energy radiation into the body, making it one of the least invasive medical imaging modalities. MRI can achieve excellent soft tissue contrast and is therefore useful for diagnosis of a wide variety of diseases. While there are a wide variety of available techniques for generating contrast in MRI, there are still many open areas for research. For example, many tissues in the human body exhibit such rapid signal decay that they are …

Lateral Resistance Of H-Piles And Square Piles Behind An Mse Wall With Ribbed Strip And Welded Wire Reinforcements, Andrew I. Luna May 2016

Lateral Resistance Of H-Piles And Square Piles Behind An Mse Wall With Ribbed Strip And Welded Wire Reinforcements, Andrew I. Luna

Theses and Dissertations

Bridges often use pile foundations behind MSE walls to help resist lateral loading from seismic and thermal expansion and contraction loads. Overdesign of pile spacing and sizes occur owing to a lack of design code guidance for piles behind an MSE wall. However, space constraints necessitate the installation of piles near the wall. Full scale lateral load tests were conducted on piles behind an MSE wall. This study involves the testing of four HP12X74 H-piles and four HSS12X12X5/16 square piles. The H-piles were tested with ribbed strip soil reinforcement at a wall height of 15 feet, and the square piles …

Protein Synthesis Directly From Pcr: Progress And Applications Of Cell-Free Protein Synthesis With Linear Dna, Song-Min Schinn, Andrew Broadbent, William T. Bradley, Bradley Charles Bundy

Faculty Publications

A rapid, versatile method of protein expression and screening can greatly facilitate the future development of therapeutic biologics, proteomic drug targets and biocatalysts. An attractive candidate is cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS), a cell-lysate-based in vitro expression system, which can utilize linear DNA as expression templates, bypassing time-consuming cloning steps of plasmid-based methods. Traditionally, such linear DNA expression templates (LET) have been vulnerable to degradation by nucleases present in the cell lysate, leading to lower yields. This challenge has been significantly addressed in the recent past, propelling LET-based CFPS as a useful tool for studying, screening and engineering proteins in a …

Stiffness Reduction Strategies For Additively Manufactured Compliant Mechanisms, Ezekiel G. Merriam Apr 2016

Stiffness Reduction Strategies For Additively Manufactured Compliant Mechanisms, Ezekiel G. Merriam

Theses and Dissertations

This work develops and examines design strategies for reducing the stiffness of 3D-printed compliant mechanisms. The three aspects of a flexure that determine its stiffness are well known: material, boundary conditions, and geometry. In a highly constrained design space however, flexure stiffness may remain unacceptably high even while arriving at the limits of design constraints. In this work, changes to geometry and boundary conditions are examined that lead to drastically reduced stiffness behavior without changing flexure thickness, width, or length. Changes to geometry can result in very complex mechanisms. However, 3D printing enables almost arbitrarily complex geometries. This dissertation presents …

Mitigating Transients And Azeotropes During Natural Gas Processing, Edris Ebrahimzadeh Apr 2016

Mitigating Transients And Azeotropes During Natural Gas Processing, Edris Ebrahimzadeh

Theses and Dissertations

Cryogenic carbon capture process can be used to efficiently eliminate CO2 emissions from fossil-fueled power plants. The energy-storing embodiment of cryogenic carbon capture (ES-CCC) integrates energy storage with cryogenic carbon capture and uses natural gas as a refrigerant. ES-CCC captures CO2 from slowly varying or steady-state sources even as it absorbs and replaces large amounts of energy on the grid for energy storage. These large transients occur in the LNG generation as the process moves through energy storing to energy recovery operations. Additionally, raw natural gas often includes CO2 that forms an azeotrope with ethane. Breaking this azeotrope and separating …

Droplet Impingement On Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Cristian Esteban Clavijo Angeles Apr 2016

Droplet Impingement On Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Cristian Esteban Clavijo Angeles

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the physics of droplet impingement on superhydrophobic surfaces. The research is divided in three categories. First, the effect of a slip boundary condition on droplet spreading/retracting is considered. A model is developed based on energy conservation to evaluate spreading rates on surfaces exhibiting isotropic and anisotropic slip. The results show that larger slip causes the droplet to spread out farther owing to reduced friction at the interface for both slip scenarios. Furthermore, effects of slip become magnified for large Weber numbers due to the larger solid-liquid contact area during the process. On surfaces with anisotropic slip, droplets …

Process-based hydrological models have a long history dating back to the 1960s. Criticized by some as over-parameterized, overly complex, and difficult to use, a more nuanced view is that these tools are necessary in many situations and, in a certain class of problems, they are the most appropriate type of hydrological model. This is especially the case in situations where knowledge of flow paths or distributed state variables and/or preservation of physical constraints is important. Examples of this include: spatiotemporal variability of soil moisture, groundwater flow and runoff generation, sediment and contaminant transport, or when feedbacks among various Earth’s system …
