Energy From Thin Air: Compressed Air Power Harvesting Systems, Zachary Sadler, Matthew Jones Mar 2017

Energy From Thin Air: Compressed Air Power Harvesting Systems, Zachary Sadler, Matthew Jones

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Energy is an important resource within the world we live. The demand for power requires new energy resources. Much of the power that is generated is eventually wasted in the form of waste heat. As much as 435 GW of energy is transferred from virtually all energy conversion devices and processes to the atmosphere as wasted heat [1]. Converting as much as one percent of this waste heat into electrical power would eliminate the need for 18 average size (236 MW) [2] coal red power plants. A significant portion of this waste heat production is due to air compression …

Two-Phase Flow Pressure Drop In Superhydrophobic Channels, Kimberly A. Stevens, Julie Crockett, Daniel R. Maynes, Brian D. Iverson Mar 2017

Two-Phase Flow Pressure Drop In Superhydrophobic Channels, Kimberly A. Stevens, Julie Crockett, Daniel R. Maynes, Brian D. Iverson

Faculty Publications

Superhydrophobic surfaces have been shown to reduce drag in single-phase channel flow; however, little work has been done to characterize their drag-reducing ability found in two-phase flows. Adiabatic, airwater mixtures were used to explore the influence of hydrophobicity on two-phase flows and the hydrodynamics which might be present in flow condensation environments. Pressure drop measurements in a rectangular channel with one superhydrophobic wall (cross-section approximately 0.37 x 10 mm) and three transparent hydrophilic walls were obtained. Data for air/water mixtures with superficial Reynolds numbers ranging from 22–215 and 55–220, respectively, were obtained for superhydrophobic surfaces with three different cavity fractions. …

Influence Of Noise Generating Factors On Cross Correlation Ebsd Measurement Of Gnds, David T. Fullwood, Landon Hansen, Brian Jackson, Stewart I. Wright, Marc De Graef, Eric Richards Homer, Robert Wagoner Mar 2017

Influence Of Noise Generating Factors On Cross Correlation Ebsd Measurement Of Gnds, David T. Fullwood, Landon Hansen, Brian Jackson, Stewart I. Wright, Marc De Graef, Eric Richards Homer, Robert Wagoner

Faculty Publications

Studies of dislocation density evolution are fundamental to improved understanding in various areas of deformation mechanics. Recent advances in cross-correlation techniques, applied to EBSD data have particularly shed light on geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) behavior. However, the framework is relatively computationally expensive – patterns are typically saved from the EBSD scan and analyzed offline. A better understanding of the impact of EBSD pattern degradation, such as binning, compression, and various forms of noise, is vital to enable optimization of rapid and low cost GND analysis. This paper tackles the problem by setting up a set of simulated patterns that mimic …

Preserving Optical Confinement In Pecvd Sio2 Waveguides By Control Of Thin-Film Stress, Steven Jay Hammon Mar 2017

Preserving Optical Confinement In Pecvd Sio2 Waveguides By Control Of Thin-Film Stress, Steven Jay Hammon

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers at Brigham Young University (BYU) have developed an optical biosensor that can quickly analyze a sample to detect any type of nucleic acid based organism, such as viruses or bacteria. The biosensor's reliability over time is compromised due to water absorbing into the SiO2 waveguides of the chip. It was hypothesized that keeping the thin-film stress of the waveguides close to zero would slow or stop water absorption from occurring. Completion of this thin-film study relied upon a new plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) machine and a new 3-D optical profilometer, both of which were installed in …

Cloud-Based Analytic Element Groundwater Modeling, Jacob Baird Fullerton Mar 2017

Cloud-Based Analytic Element Groundwater Modeling, Jacob Baird Fullerton

Theses and Dissertations

Managing groundwater resources requires computer modeling software, which in turn brings its own costs in education and usage fees. Although many groundwater modeling programs can be obtained at relatively inexpensive rates the hidden costs of software training remain high in general. What has been done is to make both the software and training available online for free, but this method delegates all responsibility to the users for both accessing the software in addition to learning how to use it properly. In this research the accessibility of groundwater models has been improved upon by creating a web app of an open …

Characterizing Current And Geologic Phosphorus In Utah Lake Sediment Using Field Samples, Laboratory Methods, And Statistical Analysis: Implications For Water Quality Issues, Hani Yousef Abu Hmeidan Mar 2017

Characterizing Current And Geologic Phosphorus In Utah Lake Sediment Using Field Samples, Laboratory Methods, And Statistical Analysis: Implications For Water Quality Issues, Hani Yousef Abu Hmeidan

Theses and Dissertations

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for aquatic life forms and plays a major role in the algae blooms that occur in lakes and reservoirs. It is considered a primary limiting nutrient of phytoplankton growth in streams, lakes, and reservoirs. Excess amounts of phosphorous may cause excess growth and biomass of algae. If phosphorus is available in excess, often from sewage and industrial discharges, the high levels in a lake or reservoir can lead to eutrophication. Utah Lake is a shallow, basin-bottom lake in a semi-arid climate with sediments that are thousands of feet thick. Starting 165 years ago, humans have …

An Analytical Model To Predict The Length Of Oxygen-Assisted, Swirled, Coal And Biomass Flames, David Arthur Ashworth Mar 2017

An Analytical Model To Predict The Length Of Oxygen-Assisted, Swirled, Coal And Biomass Flames, David Arthur Ashworth

Theses and Dissertations

Government regulations to reduce pollutants and increasing environmental awareness in the power generation industry have encouraged coal power plants to begin firing biomass in their boilers. Biomass generally consists of larger particles which produce longer flames than coal for a given burner. The length of the flame is important in fixed-volume boilers because of its influence on heat transfer, corrosion, deposition, and pollutant formation. Many pulverized fuel burners employ a series of co-annular tubes with various flows of fuel and air to produce a stabilized flame. A variable swirl burner with three co-annular tubes, each of variable diameter, has been …

Binder-Jet Printing Of Fine Stainless Steel Powder With Varied Final Density, Mohsen Ziaee, Eric M. Tridas, Nathan B. Crane

Faculty Publications

Binder jetting is an additive manufacturing process that produces relatively weak porous parts that are strengthened through sintering and/or infiltration. This paper reports on two different methods of preparing fine 316 stainless steel powder and their impact on the final sintered density and dimensions relative to direct printing into -22 micron powder. The first method uses agglomerates of fine powder. In the second, nylon 12 powders are mixed with the steel powder as a fugitive space holder to increase porosity. Sintered density and sintering shrinkage of agglomerate material are shown to vary with the density of the spread powder bed. …

A Reconfigurable Trusted Platform Module, Matthew David James Mar 2017

A Reconfigurable Trusted Platform Module, Matthew David James

Theses and Dissertations

A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a security device included in most modern desktop and laptop computers. It helps keep the computing environment secure by isolating cryptographic functions and data from the CPU. A TPM is usually implemented with a small microcontroller which is near the main processor. In addition to a microcontroller, it may employ hardware acceleration to assist in cryptographic computations. When vulnerabilities are found, or new algorithms developed, TPMs become obsolete because the hardware accelerators cannot be upgraded. This thesis presents a proof of concept implementation of a TPM on an FPGA. By using an FPGA, the …

Extension Of The Quikscat Sea Ice Extent Data Set With Oscat And Ascat Data, Jordan Curtis Hill Mar 2017

Extension Of The Quikscat Sea Ice Extent Data Set With Oscat And Ascat Data, Jordan Curtis Hill

Theses and Dissertations

Polar sea ice measurements are an important contribution to global climate models. Passive and active microwave remote sensing instruments are used to track global trends in polar sea ice growth and retreat from day to day. A scatterometer sea ice extent data set is valuable for comparison with other radiometer data sets and ground based measurements. This scatterometer sea ice record began with the NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) and continued with the Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) data set. The Ku-band Oceansat-2 scatterometer (OSCAT) is very similar to the Quick Scatterometer, which operated from 1999 to 2009. OSCAT continues the Ku-band scatterometer data …

High-Sensitivity Phased Arrays For Radio Astronomy And Satellite Communications, Junming Diao Mar 2017

High-Sensitivity Phased Arrays For Radio Astronomy And Satellite Communications, Junming Diao

Theses and Dissertations

Radio astronomy is used to study stars, galaxies, black holes and gas clouds radiation at radio frequencies. Detecting extremely weak signals from deep space radio sources requires high sensitive feed system associated with large dish antennas. The key figure of merit is survey speed, or the time required to map a region of the sky to a given source flux density. Survey speed is proportional to the frequency bandwidth, the field of view or observable region of the sky, and the squared sensitivity, where sensitivity is related to reflector aperture efficiency and system noise temperature. Compared to the traditional single …

The Development Of A Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine Wake Model For Use In Wind Farm Layout Optimization With Noise Level Constraints, Eric Blaine Tingey Mar 2017

The Development Of A Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine Wake Model For Use In Wind Farm Layout Optimization With Noise Level Constraints, Eric Blaine Tingey

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on providing the means to use vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) in wind farms as an alternative form of harnessing wind energy in offshore and urban environments where both wake and acoustic effects of turbines are important considerations. In order for VAWTs to be used in wind farm layout analysis and optimization, a reduced-order wake model is needed to calculate velocities around a turbine quickly and accurately. However, a VAWT wake model has not been available to accomplish this task. Using vorticity data from computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations of VAWTs and cross-validated Gaussian distribution and polynomial surface …

Application Of The Rotating Cylinder Electrode In Molten Licl-Kcl Eutectic Containing Uranium(Iii)- And Magnesium(Ii)-Chloride, Devin Rappleye, Michael F. Simpson

Faculty Publications

The application of the rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) to molten LiCl-KCl eutectic mixtures for electroanalytical measurements is presented. This enabled the measurement of the limiting current which was observed to follow a linear trend with the rotational rate raised to 0.64–0.65 power on average, which closely agrees with existing RCE mass-transfer correlations. This is the first publication of electroanalytical RCE measurements in LiCl-KCl eutectic based molten salt mixtures, to our knowledge. These measurements were made in mixtures of molten LiCl-KCl eutectic containing UCl3 and MgCl2. Kinetic parameters were calculated for Mg2+ in LiCl-KCl eutectic. The exchange …

Examination Of The Effect Of Differential Molecular Diffusion In Dns Of Turbulent Non-Premixed Flames, Chao Han, David O. Lignell, Evatt R. Hawkes, Jacqueline H. Chen, Haifeng Wang

Faculty Publications

The effect of differential molecular diffusion (DMD) in turbulent non-premixed flames is studied by examining two previously reported DNS of temporally evolving planar jet flames, one with CO/H2 as the fuel and the other with C2H4 as the fuel. The effect of DMD in the CO/H2 DNS flames in which H2 is part of fuel is found to behave similar to laminar flamelet, while in the C2H4 DNS flames in which H2 is not present in the fuel it is similar to laminar flamelet in early stages but becomes different from laminar flamelet later. The scaling of the effect …

The Sub-Chronic Vascular Response To Water-Borne Embolic Coacervates., Joshua P. Jones, Monika Sima, Russell J. Stewart Feb 2017

The Sub-Chronic Vascular Response To Water-Borne Embolic Coacervates., Joshua P. Jones, Monika Sima, Russell J. Stewart

Biomedical Engineering Western Regional Conference

Water-borne coacervates that solidify in response to decreasing ionic strength have been developed as an agent for small vessel transcatheter embolization. Here, the sub-chronic vascular response to these agents will be presented. Embolic coacervates demonstrated a benign foreign body response, which supported tissue ingrowth and stabilized vessel occlusion out to 28 days. As with other liquid embolics, occlusion is dependent upon mechanical obstruction of the vessel and native thrombus. Over time, the thrombus becomes more organized by fibroblasts. Continuation of the processes seen at 28 days will likely result in fibrous encapsulation of the embolic coacervate, further stabilizing the occlusion.

Simulation Of Tremor Propagation In The Upper Limb, Thomas Corie, Steven K. Charles Dr

Biomedical Engineering Western Regional Conference

Essential tremor (ET) is the most common movement disorder and is estimated to affect between 1 and 12 million people in the US. Our long-term goal is to develop effective wearable tremor-suppressing devices. To reach this goal, we must first understand how tremor propagates from its mechanical origin (muscle) to the hand, where it matters most. The purpose of the current work is to characterize the extent to which tremor in different muscles or muscle groups contributes to tremor at the hand.

Differentiation And Containment Of Derived Pancreatic Beta Cells, Caden Duffy, Alonzo Cook Ph.D.

Biomedical Engineering Western Regional Conference

Currently, the only permanent cure for Type 1 Diabetes is a pancreatic or islet transplant. With the shortage of donors, we are progressing research towards alternative therapies by differentiating induced pluripotent stem cells into derived pancreatic β-cells that can be transplanted and used as treatment for Type 1 Diabetes. We are investigating methods to increase the yield of fully derived, insulin producing pancreatic β-cells and are additionally researching the use of hydrophilized expanded polytetrafluoroethylene for use in cell containment devices. These devices could offer a future alternative for islet transplantation in human patients.

Despite modern technology and developments in heart disease treatment and prevention, heart disease remains the number one cause of death in America. With an inability to meet an ever-increasing demand for heart transplants and the dangers of immunosuppressant drugs, any potential alternative to cardiac transplantation must be pursued. The end goal of this research is to engineer biocompatible tissues that are fully functional to repair or replace damaged portions of the heart following the loss of cardiac function. This research investigates the effect of porcine extracellular matrix as the scaffold for beating IPS-differentiated cardiomyocytes.
