Online Neuro-Adaptive Learning For Power System Dynamic State Estimation, Rahul Birari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the increased penetration of renewable generation in the smart grid , it is crucial to have knowledge of rapid changes of system states. The information of real-time electro-mechanical dynamic states of generators are essential to ensuring reliability and detecting instability of the grid. The conventional SCADA based Dynamic State Estimation (DSE) was limited by the slow sampling rates (2-4 Hz). With the advent of PMU based synchro-phasor technology in tandem with Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS), it has become possible to avail rapid real-time measurements at the network nodes. These measurements can be exploited for better estimates of system …

Audio-Based Productivity Forecasting Of Construction Cyclic Activities, Chris A. Sabillon Jan 2017

Audio-Based Productivity Forecasting Of Construction Cyclic Activities, Chris A. Sabillon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to its high cost, project managers must be able to monitor the performance of construction heavy equipment promptly. This cannot be achieved through traditional management techniques, which are based on direct observation or on estimations from historical data. Some manufacturers have started to integrate their proprietary technologies, but construction contractors are unlikely to have a fleet of entirely new and single manufacturer equipment for this to represent a solution. Third party automated approaches include the use of active sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, passive technologies such as computer vision and image processing, and audio signal processing. Hitherto, most …

Voltage Regulation Of Low Voltage Distribution Networks, Manisha Maharjan Jan 2017

Voltage Regulation Of Low Voltage Distribution Networks, Manisha Maharjan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The modern voltage distribution systems consist of distributed generation (DG), like photovoltaics (PV) and wind. These resources are inexhaustible and environmentally friendly. The existing low voltage (LV) distribution networks are typically designed for unidirectional power flow. The integration of DG makes the LV distribution networks prone to difficulties related to voltage, frequency, and power quality. The main challenges in the integration of DG occur due to the intermittent nature of DG. The amount of DG compared with the total generation resource on a power system network is measured as penetration. The system undergoes through reverse power flow when there is …

Engineering Of Photo-Rechargeable Energy Storage, Ashim Gurung

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Solar photovoltaics (PV) is a very promising renewable energy technologies as it is abundant and pollution-free. However, the major drawback of PV power is its intermittency. Integration of batteries with solar modules can reduce overall PV system costs and increase the practicality of PV power. Integration of the photovoltaic cells with supercapacitor storage proved feasibility of combined photovoltaic energy generation and storage but the supercapacitors had low energy storage capacity. Photovoltaic cells with integrated Li-ion batteries as energy storage were demonstrated but had a complex structure due to multiple PV cells; low efficiency due to a mismatch between the PV …

Porous silicon has exhibited lower reflectance and higher surface area than the pristine silicon. This property of porous silicon can be applied to photovoltaic (PV) application for more efficient silicon solar cells and for higher performance of supercapacitors. NH4Fl electrolytic etching solution has been used to fabricate porous silicon, but the control of pore morphology of silicon is achieved only by controlling the time. Therefore, it is urgently required to use other etching parameters such as voltage and current to achieve flexible control of pore properties. Porous silicon can also be used to fabricate supercapacitors. An established approach to make …
