Optimal Decomposition Strategy For Tree Edit Distance, Shaofeng Jiang Dec 2017

Optimal Decomposition Strategy For Tree Edit Distance, Shaofeng Jiang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

An ordered labeled tree is a tree where the left-to-right order among siblings is significant. Given two ordered labeled trees, the edit distance between them is the minimum cost edit operations that convert one tree to the other.

In this thesis, we present an algorithm for the tree edit distance problem by using the optimal tree decomposition strategy. By combining the vertical compression of trees with optimal decomposition we can significantly reduce the running time of the algorithm. We compare our method with other methods both theoretically and experimentally. The test results show that our strategies on compressed trees are …

A New Single-Phase Single-Stage Ac-Dc Stacked Flyback Converter With Active Clamp Zvs, Yuntong Li Dec 2017

A New Single-Phase Single-Stage Ac-Dc Stacked Flyback Converter With Active Clamp Zvs, Yuntong Li

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Single-stage AC-DC converters integrate an AC-DC front-end converter with a DC-DC back-end converter. Compared with conventional two-stage AC-DC converters, single-stage AC-DC converters use less components and only one controller, which is used to regulate the output voltage. As a result, the cost, size and complexity of AC-DC converters can be reduced, but single-stage converters do not perform as well as two-stage converters, and most have drawbacks that are related to the fact that the DC bus voltage is not controlled an can become excessive.

A new single-phase single-stage AC-DC converter that uses stacked flyback converters is proposed in this thesis. …

A Novel Ac-Dc Interleaved Zcs-Pwm Boost Converter, Ramtin Rasoulinezhad Dec 2017

A Novel Ac-Dc Interleaved Zcs-Pwm Boost Converter, Ramtin Rasoulinezhad

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

AC-DC converters with input power factor correction (PFC) that consist of two or more interleaved boost converter modules are popular in industry. PFC is a must in today’s AC-DC converters as their input current must meet harmonic standards set by regulatory agencies. With interleaving, the input current of each module can make to be discontinuous and the size of their input inductors since interleaving can reduce the high ripple in each module and produce a net input current with a ripple that is comparable to that achieved with a single boost converter module with a large input inductor.

In high- …

Skills Assessment In Arthroscopic Surgery By Processing Kinematic, Force, And Bio-Signal Data, Behnaz Poursartip

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Arthroscopic surgery is a type of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) performed in human joints, which can be used for diagnostic or treatment purposes. The nature of this type of surgery makes it such that surgeons require extensive training to become experts at performing surgical tasks in tight environments and with reduced force feedback. MIS increases the possibility of erroneous actions, which could result in injury to the patient. Many of these injuries can be prevented by implementing appropriate training and skills assessment methods.

Various performance methods, including Global Rating Scales and technical measures, have been proposed in the literature. However, …

A Comparison Between Different Snubbers For Flyback Converters, Adel Alganidi Dec 2017

A Comparison Between Different Snubbers For Flyback Converters, Adel Alganidi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The DC-DC flyback power converter is widely used in low power commercial and industrial applications ( > 150 W) such as in computers, telecom, consumer electronics because it is one of the simplest and least expensive converter topologies with transformer isolation. Its main power circuit consists of just a semiconductor device like a MOSFET operating as a switch, a transformer, an output diode and an output filter capacitor. The converter switch, however, is susceptible to high voltage spikes due to the interaction between its output capacitance and the leakage inductance of the transformer. These spikes can exceed the ratings of the …

Hybrid Attitude Control And Estimation On So(3), Soulaimane Berkane

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis presents a general framework for hybrid attitude control and estimation design on the Special Orthogonal group SO(3). First, the attitude stabilization problem on SO(3) is considered. It is shown that, using a min-switch hybrid control strategy designed from a family of potential functions on SO(3), global exponential stabilization on SO(3) can be achieved when this family of potential functions satisfies certain properties. Then, a systematic methodology to construct these potential functions is developed. The proposed hybrid control technique is applied to the attitude tracking problem for rigid body systems. A smoothing mechanism is proposed to filter out the …

Realtime Implementation Of An Internal-Model-Principle Signal Identifier, Edris Saleh Mohsen Nov 2017

Realtime Implementation Of An Internal-Model-Principle Signal Identifier, Edris Saleh Mohsen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis presents a new means approach of tuning an adaptive internal model principle based signal identification algorithm whose computational costs are low enough to allow a realtime implementation. The algorithm allows an instantaneous Fourier decomposition of nonstationary signals that have a strongly predictable component. The algorithm is implemented as a feedback loop resulting in a closed loop system with a frequency response of a bandpass filter with notches at the frequencies of the Fourier decomposition. This is achieved through real time selection of the coefficients of the transfer functions in the feedback loop. Previous work showed how the dynamics …

Installations of large scale PV solar farms are rapidly increasing, worldwide. This is causing a growing apprehension that inertialess power injections from these inverter based generators will result in a decline in power system stability. Instead, this thesis presents novel applications of a patent pending technology whereby the PV solar farms actually help significantly increase system stability. A novel 24/7 (night and day) control of a large-scale PV solar farm as a dynamic reactive power compensator STATCOM, termed PV-STATCOM, is presented for damping low-frequency electromechanical power oscillations resulting in a significant improvement in power transfer capability of existing power transmission …

Grouping Environmental Factors Influencing Individual Decision-Making Behavior In Software Projects: A Cluster Analysis, Luiz Fernando Capretz Oct 2017

Grouping Environmental Factors Influencing Individual Decision-Making Behavior In Software Projects: A Cluster Analysis, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

An individual’s decision-making behavior is heavily influenced by and adapted to external environmental factors. Given that software development is a human-centered activity, individual decision-making behavior may affect the software project quality. Although environmental factors affecting decision-making behavior in software projects have been identified in prior literature, there is not yet an objective and a full taxonomy of these factors. Thus, it is not trivial to manage these complex and diverse factors. To address this deficiency, we first design a semantic similarity algorithm between words by utilizing the synonymy and hypernymy relationships in WordNet. Further, we propose a method to measure …

Comparison Of Dc Motors And Dielectric Elastomer Actuators For Wearable Wrist Exoskeletons, Myles Lidka

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Paralysis or loss of strength resulting from stroke requires patients to undergo extensive rehabilitation therapy. It is known that intensive therapy contributes significantly to recovery, but as the number of surviving stroke patients increases, it is difficult for clinics to provide patients with the optimal level of therapy. Robotic devices for wrist rehabilitation have been developed to lessen these problems, but at the moment they are physically large and must be used within a clinical setting. More benefit could be obtained if the devices were portable, so that they could be used by the patients on a daily basis. To …

Grasp Evaluation Method For Applying Static Loads Leading To Beam Failure, Mahyar Abdeetedal, Mehrdad Kermani Ph.D., P.Eng.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

This paper deals with the problem of purposefully failing or yielding an object by a robotic gripper. We propose a grasp quality measure fabricated for robotic harvesting in which picking a crop from its stem is desired. The proposed metric characterizes a suitable grasp configuration for systematically controlling the failure behavior of an object to break it at the desired location while avoiding damage on other areas. Our approach is based on failure task information and gripper wrench insertion capability. Failure task definition is accomplished using failure theories. Gripper wrench insertion capability is formulated by modeling the friction between the …

Secure multi party computation allows two or more parties to jointly compute a function under encryption without leaking information about their private inputs. These secure computations are vital in many fields including law enforcement, secure voting and bioinformatics because the privacy of the information is of paramount importance.

One common reference problem for secure multi party computation is the Millionaires' problem which was first introduced by Turing Award winner Yao in his paper "Protocols for secure computation". The Millionaires' problem considers two millionaires who want to know who is richer without disclosing their actual worth.

There are public-key cryptosystems that …

Force Sensing Surgical Grasper With Folding Capacitive Sensor, Dave Bp Tripp Aug 2017

Force Sensing Surgical Grasper With Folding Capacitive Sensor, Dave Bp Tripp

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Minimally-invasive surgery (MIS) has brought many benefits to the operating room, however, MIS procedures result in an absence of force feedback, and surgeons cannot as accurately feel the tissue they are working on, or the forces that they are applying. One of the barriers to introducing MIS instruments with force feedback systems is the high cost of manufacturing and assembly. Instruments must also be sterilized before every use, a process that can destroy embedded sensing systems. An instrument that can be disposed of after a single use and produced in bulk at a low cost is desirable. Printed circuit micro-electro-mechanical …

Pulmonary imaging, including pulmonary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), provides a way to sensitively and regionally measure spatially heterogeneous lung structural-functional abnormalities. These unique imaging biomarkers offer the potential for better understanding pulmonary disease mechanisms, monitoring disease progression and response to therapy, and developing novel treatments for improved patient care. To generate these regional lung structure-function measurements and enable broad clinical applications of quantitative pulmonary MRI and CT biomarkers, as a first step, accurate, reproducible and rapid lung segmentation and registration methods are required. In this regard, we first developed a 1H MRI lung segmentation algorithm that …

Fault Location In High Voltage Shunt Capacitor Banks, Hessamoddin Jouybari Moghaddam Aug 2017

Fault Location In High Voltage Shunt Capacitor Banks, Hessamoddin Jouybari Moghaddam

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

High Voltage Shunt Capacitor Banks (HV-SCBs) are critical substation assets that are primarily used to improve power factor and thus power transmission capability. Over temperature, over voltages, manufacturing defects can cause internal failures of capacitor elements. With today’s sensitive protection available in numerical relays these failures will be detected and SCBs will be taken out of service. But determining the phase and section in which capacitor elements have failed is important for utilities to decrease downtime of SCBs. This thesis proposes methods to address the challenges in fault location of SCBs. The proposed methods apply calibrating factors that compensate for …

Predictive Energy Management Of Islanded Microgrids With Photovoltaics And Energy Storage, Dennis G. Michaelson

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Islanded microgrids powered primarily by photovoltaic (PV) arrays present a challenging control problem due to the intermittent production and the relatively close scale between the sources and the loads. Energy storage in such microgrids plays an important role in balancing supply with demand, and in extending operation during periods when the PV supply is not available or insufficient. The efficient operation of such microgrids requires effective management of all resources. A predictive energy management strategy can potentially avoid or effectively mitigate upcoming outages. This thesis presents an energy management system (EMS) for such microgrids. The EMS uses a predictive approach …

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become a readily available prognostic and diagnostic method, providing invaluable information for the clinical treatment of neurological diseases. Multimodal neuroimaging allows integration of complementary data from various aspects such as functional and anatomical properties; thus, it has the potential to overcome the limitations of each individual modality. Specifically, functional and diffusion MRI are two non-invasive neuroimaging techniques customized to capture brain activity and microstructural properties, respectively. Data from these two modalities is inherently complex, and interactive visualization can assist with data comprehension.

The current thesis presents the design, development, and validation of visualization and computation …

Design And Implementation Of Smart Sensors With Capabilities Of Process Fault Detection And Variable Prediction, An He Jun 2017

Design And Implementation Of Smart Sensors With Capabilities Of Process Fault Detection And Variable Prediction, An He

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A typical sensor consists of a sensing element and a transmitter. The major functions of a transmitter are limited to data acquisition and communication. The recently developed transmitters with ‘smart’ functions have been focused on easy setup/maintenance of the transmitter itself such as self-calibration and self-configuration. Recognizing the growing computational capabilities of microcontroller units (MCUs) used in these transmitters and underutilized computational resources, this thesis investigates the feasibility of adding additional functionalities to a transmitter to make it ‘smart’ without modifying its foot-print, nor adding supplementary hardware. Hence, a smart sensor is defined as sensing elements combined with a smart …

Efficient Macromodeling And Fast Transient Simulation Of High Speed Distributed Interconnects, Sadia Wahid Jun 2017

Efficient Macromodeling And Fast Transient Simulation Of High Speed Distributed Interconnects, Sadia Wahid

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In the first part of the thesis, an efficient macromodeling technique based on Loewner Matrix (LM) approach has been presented to model multi-port distributed systems using tabulated noisy data. In the proposed method, Loewner Model data from previous rational approximation are used to create less noisy eigenvectors in an iterative manner. As a result, the biasing effect of the LM model approximated by the noisy data is reduced. It is illustrated that this method improves the accuracy of the Loewner Matrix modeling for noisy frequency data.

In the second part, a fast and robust algorithm is introduced for time-domain simulation …

Advanced Signal Processing Methods For Plane-Wave Color Doppler Ultrasound Imaging, Omar Mansour Mar 2017

Advanced Signal Processing Methods For Plane-Wave Color Doppler Ultrasound Imaging, Omar Mansour

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Conventional medical ultrasound imaging uses focused beams to scan the imaging scene line-by-line, but recently however, plane-wave imaging, in which plane-waves are used to illuminate the entire imaging scene, has been gaining popularity due its ability to achieve high frame rates, thus allowing the capture of fast dynamic events and producing continuous Doppler data. In most implementations, multiple low-resolution images from different plane wave tilt angles are coherently averaged (compounded) to form a single high-resolution image, albeit with the undesirable side effect of reducing the frame rate, and attenuating signals with high Doppler shifts.

This thesis introduces a spread-spectrum color …

A Framework For Tumor Localization In Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery, Nikita Chopra

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Manual palpation of tissue is frequently used in open surgery, e.g., for localization of tumors and buried vessels and for tissue characterization. The overall objective of this work is to explore how tissue palpation can be performed in Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery (RAMIS) using laparoscopic instruments conventionally used in RAMIS. This thesis presents a framework where a surgical tool is moved teleoperatively in a manner analogous to the repetitive pressing motion of a finger during manual palpation. We interpret the changes in parameters due to this motion such as the applied force and the resulting indentation depth to accurately determine …
