High Thermal Conductivity In Soft Elastomers With Elongated Liquid Metal Inclusions, Michael D. Bartlett, Navid Kazem, Matthew J. Powell-Palm, Xiaonan Huang, Wenhuan Sun, Jonathan A. Malen, Carmel Majidi Majidi Dec 2016

High Thermal Conductivity In Soft Elastomers With Elongated Liquid Metal Inclusions, Michael D. Bartlett, Navid Kazem, Matthew J. Powell-Palm, Xiaonan Huang, Wenhuan Sun, Jonathan A. Malen, Carmel Majidi Majidi

Michael Bartlett

Soft dielectric materials typically exhibit poor heat transfer properties due to the dynamics of phonon transport, which constrain thermal conductivity (k) to decrease monotonically with decreasing elastic modulus (E). This thermal−mechanical trade-off is limiting for wearable computing, soft robotics, and other emerging applications that require materials with both high thermal conductivity and low mechanical stiffness. Here, we overcome this constraint with an electrically insulating composite that exhibits an unprecedented combination of metal-like thermal conductivity, an elastic compliance similar to soft biological tissue (Young’s modulus < 100 kPa), and the capability to undergo extreme deformations (>600% strain). By incorporating liquid metal …

Massive Open Online Courses: Integrating Open Source Technology And Open Access Literature Into Technology Based Degrees, Maurice Dawson, Sharon Burton, Dustin Bessette, Jorja Wright

Maurice Dawson

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a new phenomenon of course delivery for students, faculty, and administrators to use.  As this technology continues to grow in the short term it is essential to develop a method in which Open Source Software (OSS), open source technologies, and open access literature can be incorporated to strengthen the MOOC environment. Strengthening the MOOC environment can be used as a method to increase retention as well as increase enrollment in higher education.  As Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs are going online it is imperative that the tools meet the demands of today’s …

Printed Dot Quality In Response To Doctor Blade Angle, Bilge N. Altay, Alexandra Pekarovicova, Paul D. Fleming Dec 2016

Printed Dot Quality In Response To Doctor Blade Angle, Bilge N. Altay, Alexandra Pekarovicova, Paul D. Fleming

Bilge Nazli Altay

Doctor blade is one of the critical machine part of the gravure printing press that controls the amount of ink transfer on the substrate. The angle of the blade can be varied; however, an improper angle may cause major problems. In this study, the doctor blade angle was positioned at three different level to address its effect on the printed dot quality. Print trials were made on a web-fed gravure press at the speed of 650 ft./min. A high-resolution overhead camera was used to analyze the key dot attributes. The results showed that measuring only the density of printed dot …

Irresistible Bargains: Navigating The Surveillance Society, Robert M. Pallitto Dec 2016

Irresistible Bargains: Navigating The Surveillance Society, Robert M. Pallitto

Robert M Pallitto

Agents in contemporary societies are faced continually with choices regarding engagement with technological artifacts. They can choose to engage or decline engagement after considering the costs and benefits in each case. However, certain aspects of the surveillance society may be irresistible in a number of ways, so that refusal to engage with them is not a realistic option. The proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT), particularly as embedded in “smart city” initiatives, helps to make surveillance technologies potentially irresistible. After laying the conceptual groundwork for discussing irresistible bargains, this essay offers a two-part normative critique, focusing on the asymmetrical …

Impact Of Mismatch Angle On Electronic Transport Across Grain Boundaries And Interfaces In 2d Materials, Zlatan Aksamija Dec 2016

Impact Of Mismatch Angle On Electronic Transport Across Grain Boundaries And Interfaces In 2d Materials, Zlatan Aksamija

Zlatan Aksamija

We study the impact of grain boundaries (GB) and misorientation angles between grains on electronic
transport in 2-dimensional materials. Here we have developed a numerical model based on the firstprinciples
electronic bandstructure calculations in conjunction with a method which computes electron
transmission coefficients from simultaneous conservation of energy and momentum at the interface to
essentially evaluate GB/interface resistance in a Landauer formalism. We find that the resistance across
graphene GBs vary over a wide range depending on misorientation angles and type of GBs, starting
from 53 Ω μm for low-mismatch angles in twin (symmetric) GBs to about 1020 Ω μm …

Impact Of Building Vibrations On Vibrocardiographic Signal Collection, Bolivar Perez Dec 2016

Impact Of Building Vibrations On Vibrocardiographic Signal Collection, Bolivar Perez

Bolivar Perez

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, killing approximately 614,348 people a year (“Leading Causes of Death,” 2016). VCG signals, vibrocardiographic signals, can provide useful clinical information which may lead to develop new diagnostic methods. However, due to the sensitive equipment used to collect accurate results, any amount of outside noise or vibrations will taint the data collected and provide inaccurate results. Thus, the building vibrations and those of the surrounding areas where the VCG signals are being collected can potentially impact the end …

Identifying Growth In India By Assessment Of Quality Of Products And Services, Romesh G. Mulgi, Dec 2016

Identifying Growth In India By Assessment Of Quality Of Products And Services, Romesh G. Mulgi,

International Scientific Journals

SMEs contribute about 40 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in India. Research has shown that in most countries, SMEs generate by far more employment opportunities than big companies or the public sector. Employment is the major source of livelihood globally. No wonder the search for employment is one of the greatest reasons that accounts for the Rural-Urban migration. Many studies have been conducted to determine factors that influence growth on SMEs. The mixed results can perhaps be explained by contextual differences or the mix of variables observed. This study looked at the quality of the goods produced …
