Descriptive Statistical Analysis Of Oshpd Quality Inspections On California Hospital Projects, Philip L. Barlow Apr 2015

Descriptive Statistical Analysis Of Oshpd Quality Inspections On California Hospital Projects, Philip L. Barlow

Construction Management

California hospital construction projects are large, complex, and extremely difficult projects to execute and navigate successfully. One of the primary reasons for this is the OSHPD permit, review, and inspection process. The quality control rigor imposed by this third party inspection procedure has caused great angst amongst most general contractors and subcontractors. This study examined over 60,000 OSHPD inspections, spanning six California hospital projects and forty-one separate subcontractors. Specifically, this paper conducts descriptive statistical analysis on the total number of inspections conducted and the percentage of failed inspections (or re-inspections) that occurred. The analysis, conducted on major subcontractors working on …

The Development Of An Integrated Residential Construction Management Course, Scott D. Kelting, Eric A. Holt

Construction Management

This paper presents the recent changes to different delivery methods for a residential construction management course at a major university. The project-based course was delivered similarly to a capstone course by combining Residential Methods, Estimating, Scheduling, and Contracts into one class with one overall final project. The course introduced students to land acquisition, land development, construction services, operations, finance, marketing, and sales. Information about the course’s 14 different delivery methods and the recent changes is provided in this paper. The recent changes are based on a survey that was conducted to obtain the students’ perspectives about the course delivery methods …

Green Building Policy, School Performance, And Educational Leaders’ Perspectives In Usa, Scott D. Kelting, Michael Montoya Jul 2011

Green Building Policy, School Performance, And Educational Leaders’ Perspectives In Usa, Scott D. Kelting, Michael Montoya

Construction Management

The movement to construct high performance “green” buildings has had unprecedented market growth and continues to become mainstream practice for constructing schools in the United States. Green schools have economic, environmental and health benefits. Research provides information on the use of increased student performance found in green schools to justify building schools to a higher standard of indoor environment quality. There is clear and compelling evidence that schools currently built to specific green standards of indoor environmental quality, (e.g. thermal comfort, indoor air quality, acoustics and lighting,) result in healthier and more productive students and teachers. Current green building policies …

Development Of An Integrated Project-Based Course: A Jobsite Management Class Case Study, Philip L. Barlow

Construction Management

At universities offering professional degrees, such as construction management, some programs are moving towards and exploring alternative delivery methods for achieving the curriculum’s goals and objectives. This paper describes a curriculum integrated course founded in a project-based learning environment applied to a jobsite construction management undergraduate course being taught at a major university. A course overview describing the various delivery methods used (such as lectures, reading assignments, supplemental materials, guest lecturers, lab assignments, technology, and a jobsite visit) is presented. The benefits of course integration in a construction management undergraduate curriculum are emphasized and more fully explained. The unique student …

Green Building Policy And School Performance, S. Kelting, M. Montoya

Construction Management

The movement to construct high performance “green” buildings has had unprecedented market growth and continues to become a mainstream practice for constructing schools in the United States. This paper will consider how the results of government requirements for higher performance school buildings may affect the health and performance of students. The research focuses on educational leaders’ perceptions of how they would prioritize green building strategies based on recent governmental policy that requires building green schools. There is clear and compelling evidence that schools currently built to specific green standards of indoor environmental quality, specifically lighting, result in healthier and more …

Cost Of Quality In The Construction Industry, Philip L. Barlow Dec 2009

Cost Of Quality In The Construction Industry, Philip L. Barlow

Construction Management

The construction industry needs to decrease its costs due to nonconformance by implementing an objective model for analyzing the excessive cost of poor quality and the overall savings realized from good quality. Direct cost estimates from rework in commercial building construction average about 5%. A simple calculation based on U.S. construction industry expenditures of $1.246 trillion in 2007 reveals that $62 billion is wasted just on the direct cost construction rework alone! The term quality can be applied in many different ways to various aspects of the construction process. This paper proposes a model which helps illustrate how the various …

Case Study In Implementing A Service-Learning Class In A Construction Management Curriculum, Philip L. Barlow Apr 2009

Case Study In Implementing A Service-Learning Class In A Construction Management Curriculum, Philip L. Barlow

Construction Management

Service-learning is a pedagogical approach which gives the students an opportunity to develop professional and social skills in concert with learning and reflecting on curricular material. This is achieved through a student’s active participation in a meaningful community service project, open and interactive reflection, formal class lectures, and discussions. This case study discusses the results of implementing a pilot service-learning undergraduate class in a state university construction management program. The course was offered as a two-credit hour voluntary technical elective in the Spring quarter of 2008. The organization of this study first puts service-learning into context by giving a brief …
