Multitier Decentralized Control Scheme Using Energy Storage Unit And Load Management In Inverter-Based Ac Microgrids, Sara Nourollah, Abolfazl Pirayesh, Matthias Fripp

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The use of renewable energies, such as wind and solar, is rising in microgrids. However, because of their intermittent nature, achieving a stable system in spite of the fluctuations of generation and demand is very difficult. Aiming to increase the stability margin of AC islanded microgrids comprising nondeterministic resources, properly share real power (P), and keep the network frequency ($f)$ at nominal value, this study exploits the presence of energy storage units (ESUs) along with a load-shedding scheme. To this end, this study proposes a multitier decentralized control strategy that is based on frequency and includes three control schemes, distributed …

Turkish Synonym Identification From Multiple Resources: Monolingual Corpus, Mono/Bilingual Online Dictionaries, And Wordnet, Tuğba Yildiz, Banu Di̇ri̇, Savaş Yildirim

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a model is proposed to determine synonymy by incorporating several resources. The model extracts the features from monolingual online dictionaries, a bilingual online dictionary, WordNet, and a monolingual Turkish corpus. Once it has built a candidate list, it determines the synonymy for a given word by means of those features. All these resources and the approaches are evaluated. Taking all features into account and applying machine learning algorithms, the model shows good performance of F-measure with 81.4%. The study contributes to the literature by integrating several resources and attempting the first corpus-driven synonym detection system for Turkish.

Design And Walking Pattern Generation Of A Biped Robot, Tolga Olcay, Ahmet Özkurt

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents the design of a biped robot, the walking trajectory generation method, and experimental results about biped walking. Walking trajectory generation is one of the deterministic factors in walking robot applications. Different approaches for stable walking trajectory are worked on in robotic research. The linear inverted pendulum model (LIPM) is an effective method used with the zero moment point (ZMP) criteria. Biped robot trunk and feet moving patterns are generated depending on these fundamental methods. In this study, generated trajectories were tested by a 12 degree of freedom (DOF) biped robot RUBI built at Dokuz Eylül University. In …

A Novel Ddcc+ Based First-Order Current-Mode Active-C All-Pass Filter Using A Grounded Capacitor, Remzi̇ Arslanalp

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a novel first-order current-mode active-C all-pass filter based on a companding idea is proposed. In the design of the filter, a state space method is used. The proposed structure consists of only two plus-type differential difference current conveyors, nine external MOSFETs, and a single grounded capacitor. The dominant advantages of the proposed filter are briefly described as follows: offering resistorless design, consuming low power, having an electronic tunability property of its pole frequency, and not suffering from the disadvantage of any passive component matching conditions. By cascading two all-pass filters in a closed negative feedback loop, a …

Full Occlusion Handling For Pedestrian Tracking Via Hybrid System, Xiaoyu Zhang, Shiqiang Hu, Huanlong Zhang, Xing Hu Jan 2017

Full Occlusion Handling For Pedestrian Tracking Via Hybrid System, Xiaoyu Zhang, Shiqiang Hu, Huanlong Zhang, Xing Hu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Occlusion and lack of visibility even in sparse crowd scenes make it difficult to track individual pedestrians correctly and consistently, particularly in a single view. We present a novel pedestrian tracking approach that connects tracking with reidentification to locate and maintain the identity of certain people who may be occluded for a long time. First, two models are constructed. One model tracks the pedestrian and trains a classifier, while the other model reidentifies the pedestrian of interest from detection results with the trained classifier. Secondly, we design a set of transition rules for model switching. Finally, the two models work …

An Optimized Buffer Insertion Algorithm With Delay-Power Constraints For Vlsi Layouts, Chessda Uttraphan, Nasir Shaikh-Husin, Mohamed Khalil Hani Jan 2017

An Optimized Buffer Insertion Algorithm With Delay-Power Constraints For Vlsi Layouts, Chessda Uttraphan, Nasir Shaikh-Husin, Mohamed Khalil Hani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

We propose a grid-graph algorithm for interconnect routing and buffer insertion in nanometer VLSI layout designs. The algorithm is designed to handle multiconstraint optimizations, namely timing performance and power dissipation. The proposed algorithm is called HRTB-LA, which stands for hybrid routing tree and buffer insertion with look-ahead. In recent VLSI designs, interconnect delay has become a dominant factor compared to gate delay. The well-known technique to minimize the interconnect delay is by inserting buffers along the interconnect wires. However, the buffer itself consumes power and it has been shown that power dissipation overhead due to buffer insertions is significantly high. …

A Combined Approach Based On Fuzzy Ahp And Fuzzy Inference System To Rank Reviewers In Online Communities, Hossein Abbasimehr, Mohammadjafar Tarokh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Online product review communities allow users to share their ideas and opinions about various products and services. Although online reviews as user-generated content can be considered as an invaluable source of information for both consumers and firms, these reviews tend to be of very different quality. To tackle the problem of low quality reviews, we address reviewer credibility and propose an innovative framework. The framework comprises five critical phases for ranking reviewers in terms of credibility using a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy inference system. To determine the weights of the features, a fuzzy AHP method was applied. …

An Effective Empirical Approach To Voip Traffic Classification, Nazar Abbas Saqib, Yaqoot Shakeel, Moazzam Ali Khan, Hasan Mehmood, Muhammad Zia

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

It is beneficial for telecommunication authorities and Internet service providers (ISPs) to classify and detect voice traffic. It can help them to block unsubscribed users from using their services, which saves them huge revenues. Voice packets can be detected easily, but it becomes complicated when the application or port information in the packet header is hidden due to some secure mechanism such as encryption. This work provides effective voice packet classification and detection based on behavioral and statistical analysis, which is independent of any application, security protocol, or encryption mechanism. First we have made initial assessments through packet feature analysis …

A Metaheuristic Based On The Tabu Search For Hardware-Software Partitioning, Mehdi Jemai, Sonia Dimassi, Bouraoui Ouni, Abdellatif Mtibaa

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Several metaheuristics have become increasingly interesting in solving combinatorial problems. In this paper, we present an algorithm involving a metaheuristic based on tabu search and binary search trees to address the problem of hardware-software partitioning. Metaheuristics do not guarantee an optimum solution, but they can produce acceptable solutions in a reasonable time. Our proposed algorithm seeks to find the efficient hardware-software partitioning that minimizes the logic area of a system on a programmable chip under the condition of time constraints. Our goal is to have a better trade-off between the logic area of the application and its execution time. Finally, …

A Self-Tuning Neurofuzzy Feedback Linearization-Based Damping Control Strategy For Multiple Hvdc Links, Saghir Ahmad, Laiq Khan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This research work proposes a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) online adaptive feedback linearization NeuroFuzzy control (AFLNFC) scheme to improve the damping of low frequency oscillations (LFOs) in an AC/DC power system. Optimized NeuroFuzzy identification architecture online captures the oscillatory dynamics of the power system through wide area measurement system (WAMS)-based measured speed signals of machines. Based on the identified power system model, the appropriate control law is derived through feedback linearization control with a self-tuned coefficient vector. The generated control signal modulates the real power flow through a high voltage direct current (HVDC) link during perturbed operating conditions and enhances system …

Nonlinear Acoustic Echo Cancellation Using An Adaptive Hammerstein Block Structure Based On A Generalized Basis Function, Tuğba Özge Onur, Rifat Hacioğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

We investigated adaptive algorithms for a Hammerstein block structure in which a static nonlinear block and dynamic linear block are cascaded. The approach considered here is to use generalized orthonormal basis functions in a Hammerstein block structure by using fixed pole filter banks. We applied the normalized least mean square approach to the developed adaptive algorithm in order to acquire Hammerstein block structure parameters. Performance comparison of the proposed approach was investigated considering convergence speed and parametric complexity for acoustic echo cancellation application. The results indicated that in the developed algorithm along with appropriate selection of fixed poles, the algorithm …

A Novel Wound Field Flux Switching Machine With Salient Pole Rotor And Nonoverlapping Windings, Faisal Khan, Erwan Sulaiman, Md Zarafi Ahmad Jan 2017

A Novel Wound Field Flux Switching Machine With Salient Pole Rotor And Nonoverlapping Windings, Faisal Khan, Erwan Sulaiman, Md Zarafi Ahmad

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A flux switching machine (FSM) with a segmented rotor and nonoverlapping windings is an attractive alternative for driving high torque density applications. However, a rotor with segments makes the motor less robust as well as difficult to be assembled, while a FSM with salient rotor and overlapping windings inherits high copper losses and less efficiency due to high coil volume. In this paper, a novel structure of FSM with nonoverlapping windings and salient rotor is proposed, making it different from the 10Slot-8Pole segmental and salient rotor FSM. Several design parameters defined in the rotor, armature coil, and field excitation coil …

Single Event Multiple Upset-Tolerant Sram Cell Designs For Nano-Scale Cmos Technology, Ramin Rajaei, Bahar Asgari, Mahmoud Tabandeh, Mahdi Fazeli

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this article, two soft error tolerant SRAM cells, the so-called RATF1 and RATF2, are proposed and evaluated. The proposed radiation hardened SRAM cells are capable of fully tolerating single event upsets (SEUs). Moreover, they show a high degree of robustness against single event multiple upsets (SEMUs). Over the previous SRAM cells, RATF1 and RATF2 offer lower area and power overhead. The Hspice simulation results through comparison with some prominent and state-of-the-art soft error tolerant SRAM cells show that our proposed robust SRAM cells have smaller area overhead (RAFT1 offers 58% smaller area than DICE), lower power delay product (RATF1 …

In this paper we intend to design a reduced ultrawideband band-pass filter using new models of coupled transmission lines. In this paper, by providing a new model of resonators, the bandwidth of band-pass filters (which are among the most crucial elements in communication systems) will be moderately increased, while their size and volume decreases. According to the change of their equations and consequent changes in basic parameters of these models, optimization and dependency among these parameters and also the frequency response of these filters will be developed to utilize notches in the pass-band, and a reduced ultrawideband band-pass filter with …

On The Application Of The Spectral Element Method In Electromagnetic Problems Involving Domain Decomposition, Ibrahim Mahariq Jan 2017

On The Application Of The Spectral Element Method In Electromagnetic Problems Involving Domain Decomposition, Ibrahim Mahariq

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

One of the challenges in electromagnetics is to solve electromagnetic fields originated from a radiating source or a scattering object in distances that largely exceed the dimensions of the source or scatterer. In this paper, domain decomposition based on the application reasoning of the perfectly matched layer (PML) is studied by the spectral element method (SEM) for the first time in order to solve near and far electromagnetic fields without requiring substantially computational resources. Scattering from a loss-free dielectric cylinder and radiated fields from a line source are the problems utilized for the purpose of numerical demonstration in two dimensions …

Universal And Stable Medical Image Generation For Tissue Segmentation (The Unistable Method), Ihab Elaff, Ali El-Kemany, Mohammed Kholif Jan 2017

Universal And Stable Medical Image Generation For Tissue Segmentation (The Unistable Method), Ihab Elaff, Ali El-Kemany, Mohammed Kholif

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Segmentation of medical images has been one of the most important research areas because of its impact in modeling and diagnosing the structure and the functions of various organs. The lack of unique solution for the segmentation problem of medical images is caused by the wide range of selections among different medical imaging modalities and clustering methods where each setting has its own estimates for solving this problem. The unistable method is a novel method that generates enhanced images with high contrast, which can reduce boundary overlap between different tissues. This is accomplished by fusion of different clustering maps, which …

A Methodology To Include Real-Life Failure Data In The Failure Rate Estimation Of Power Distribution Systems, Mojtaba Gilvanejad, Hossein Askarian Abyaneh, Kazem Mazlumi Jan 2017

A Methodology To Include Real-Life Failure Data In The Failure Rate Estimation Of Power Distribution Systems, Mojtaba Gilvanejad, Hossein Askarian Abyaneh, Kazem Mazlumi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Random failure rates are usually assumed as constant values in reliability calculations. In this paper, this topic is investigated using stochastic models of uncertain phenomena like lightning, cold load pickup, and overloading, which result in random failures. An algorithm is developed to estimate the random failure rates in distribution networks during their lifetime. This algorithm stochastically generates the random failures as well as sustained failures as a result of equipment wear-out state due to the aging process and finally estimates the total number of temporary/sustained failures in a period of the network lifetime. The results of applying this algorithm to …

An Inductorless Wideband Lna With A New Noise Canceling Technique, Pouria Pazhouhesh Moghadam, Adib Abrishamifar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

An inductorless wideband low-noise amplifier (LNA) employing a new noise canceling technique for multistandard applications is presented. The main amplifier has a cascode common gate structure, which provides good input impedance matching and isolation. The proposed noise canceling technique not only improves the noise figure and power gain but also embeds a g$_{m}$-boosting technique in itself, which reduces the power consumption of the main amplifier. Using current-steering and current-reuse techniques in the noise canceling branch makes the design realizable and low power. The proposed LNA is simulated and optimized in 0.13 $\mu $m CMOS technology. The LNA achieves a noise …

Advanced Probabilistic Power Flow Methodology For Power Systems With Renewable Resources, Dinh Duong Le, Nhi Thi Ai Nguyen, Van Duong Ngo, Alberto Berizzi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Renewable~resources have added additional uncertainty to power grids. Deterministic power flow does not provide sufficient information for power system calculation and analysis, since all sources of uncertainty are not taken into account. To handle uncertainties PPF has been introduced and used as an efficient tool. In this paper, we present a cumulant-based PPF approach that can account for various sources of uncertainty in power systems with renewable resources such as wind and photovoltaic energy. We also propose the use of a new methodology to estimate probability distribution for wind power output based on measured data. The proposed approach is carried …

Traffic Density Estimation Via Kde And Nonlinear Ls, Mi̇kai̇l Erdem, Mehmet Kemal Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

With increasing population, the determination of traffic density becomes critical in managing urban city roads for safer driving and low carbon emissions. In this study, kernel density estimation is utilized in order to estimate traffic density more accurately when the speeds of vehicles are available for a given region. For the proposed approach, as a first step, the probability density function of the speed data is modeled by kernel density estimation. Then the speed centers from the density function are modeled as clusters. The cumulative distribution function of the speed data is then determined by Kolmogorov--Smirnov test, whose complexity is …

Implementation Of A Flywheel Energy Storage System For Space Applications, Reşat Çeli̇kel, Mehmet Özdemi̇r, Ömür Aydoğmuş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A satellite power system requires solar panels to provide energy and orientation. There are two regions in the orbital path of the satellite: the dark and bright region. The energy is provided by solar panels in the bright region and by flywheel energy storage system (FESS) in the dark region. Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are widely used in the FESS due to their low weight, high power density, high efficiency, high reliability, and high speed. Some mechanical resonances may occur due to physical features of the mechanical parts. Therefore, the current of the BLDC is dramatically increased because of the …

Assessing The Importance Of Features For Detection Of Hard Exudates In Retinal Images, Kemal Akyol, Baha Şen, Şafak Bayir, Hasan Basri̇ Çakmak

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Diabetes disrupts the operation of the eye and leads to vision loss, affecting particularly the nerve layer and capillary vessels in this layer by changes in the blood vessels of the retina.~Suddenly loss and blurred vision problems occur in the image, depending on the phase of the disease, called diabetic retinopathy. Hard exudates are one of the primary signs of diabetic retinopathy. Automatic recognition of hard exudates in retinal images can contribute to detection of the disease. We present an automatic screening system for the detection of hard exudates. This system consists of two main steps. Firstly, the features were …

Performance Evaluation Of Simple Csrz-Qdpsk Transmitter Configurations For 20-Gbps Pon Applications, Rimmya Chitravelu, Ganesh Madhan Muthu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The performance of 1 and 2 Mach--Zehnder modulator (MZM)-based simple carrier suppressed return to zero differential quadrature phase shift keying (CSRZ-QDPSK) transmitters is analyzed in a 20 Gb/s single-mode fiber optic link. The link's performance under the transmitter schemes is evaluated by analyzing the received constellation, eye diagram, quality factor, and eye opening penalty (EOP) in a passive optical networks (PON) scenario. It is observed that the simple transmitter provides performance closer to the case of the standard 3 MZM CSRZ-QDPSK-based transmitter reported in the literature and implemented in experiments.

Dvcc-Based Floating Capacitance Multiplier Design, Hali̇l Alpaslan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a floating capacitance multiplier including two multioutput differential voltage current conveyors, two grounded resistors, and a grounded capacitor is proposed. The proposed floating capacitance multiplier can realize high capacitor values with two small-valued resistors. It is more suitable for integrated circuit technology because it has only grounded passive components without needing any critical passive component matching conditions. Its performances are examined with several simulations using the SPICE program. As an application example, a third-order notch filter using three resistors and three capacitors is given.
