Measurement Of Cerebral Blood Flow Using Arterial Spin Labeling Method Across Lifespan, Ciwen Wang Jan 2015

Measurement Of Cerebral Blood Flow Using Arterial Spin Labeling Method Across Lifespan, Ciwen Wang

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) is one family of perfusion-weighted contrast imaging techniques of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) that measures cerebral blood flow by labeling spins in arterial blood with inversion and then waiting for a certain period of time for the labeled arterial blood to enter the imaging plane, and then acquiring MR image at the image plane. In compare with PET, ASL is a noninvasive new technology. But as a new technology, it is not very commonly used because of the relatively low signal to noise ratio, less robust mechanism, and more important, there is no standard for clinical …

Remediation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Soil Using Hemoglobin-Catalytic Mechanism, Guyoung Kang, Kapsung Park, Jaechang Cho, David King Stevens, Namhyun Chung

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

It is suggested in this paper that recalcitrant organopollutants can be degraded efficiently by a hemoglobin-catalytic reaction in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (i.e., H2O2). The catalytic mechanism was studied with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) as a compound for oxidation. Various evidence suggests that the catalytic mechanism is very similar to those of horseradish peroxidase and lignin peroxidase. The catalytic intermediates are known to oxidize various chemicals, indicating that the intermediates of hemoglobin can nonspecifically degrade many different types of organopollutants. To prove the hypothesis, an attempt was made to remediate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated field soil. The results showed that …

Can Suspended Fine Sediment Transport In Shallow Lakes Be Predicted Using Mvrvm With Limited Observations?, H. A. Batt Ph.D., David King Stevens

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The study of sediment transport in water natural bodies is a challenging task. There have been several attempts to describe sediment mathematically using hydraulic characteristics of water bodies. Most researchers who developed empirical formulas to describe sediment transport performed laboratory experiments with assumptions that did not take into account variations of hydraulic parameters and the fine sediment sizes that are part of this phenomenon. Recently, new approaches for studying sediment transport have been developed involving the use of machine-learning algorithms that have proven accuracy and efficiency in predicting sediment transport. A novel machinelearning method, the Multivariate Relevance Vector Machine (MVRVM), …

Study And Manipulation Of Electron Tunneling Through Quantum Dots, Pradeep Krishna Bhadrachalam Dec 2014

Study And Manipulation Of Electron Tunneling Through Quantum Dots, Pradeep Krishna Bhadrachalam

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Fermi-Dirac distribution is the fundamental property which governs the electron energy distribution in solids. At finite temperatures, Fermi-Dirac thermal smearing of electron energies limits the operation of many electronic, opto-electronic and spintronic devices. Examples include single electron transistors, quantum dot resonant tunnel diodes for single photon detection, and single electron turnstile devices. To overcome this intrinsic limitation of Fermi-Dirac thermal smearing, these devices have typically been operated at cryogenic temperatures. Room temperature operation of these devices could be realized, however, if the thermal smearing of electron energies could be suppressed. Until now, studies in the fields of electron-tunneling refrigerators and …

For the last few decades, Moore's law has been driving the microelectronics industry to achieve high performance with small form-factors at a reasonable cost. The continued miniaturization of the transistors has resulted in unparalleled growth in the electronics industry. Further performance increment via size scaling; however, will not be costeffective and difficult to manufacture. To achieve further performance enhancement at a reasonable cost, advanced packaging is being leveraged. Advanced packaging technologies such as System-on-chip (SOCs), system-in-package (SiPs), and 3-D TSV ICs provide significant power and performance enhancement without having the need to migrate to the higher technology node. As planar …

Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of Variable Transportation Cooling For Reusable Thermal Protection Systems, Stefano Gulli

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This research work is focused on the numerical and experimental investigation of the transpiration cooling technique for reusable thermal protection systems. The transpiration cooling has been considered because of its higher cooling effectiveness, with respect to other active cooling techniques, in terms of minimum amount of coolant to be used and minimum interference to the external flow. An innovative approach based on the coupling of the hypersonic boundary layer with the thermal response of porous materials is used to numerically study the thermal management potential of the transpiration cooling technique. The new concept of the variable transpiration is introduced by …

An Ic Design For Wireless Batteryless Multi-Sensing Platform For Biomedical Applications, Young-Sik Seo Dec 2014

An Ic Design For Wireless Batteryless Multi-Sensing Platform For Biomedical Applications, Young-Sik Seo

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This work proposed an integrated circuit (IC) design that provides the required functionality for a wireless, batteryless implant. For biomedical applications, the physiological signals can be detected if the parameter of interest can be converted to a change in electrical parameters such as capacitance, resistance or an amperometric signal. The implantable transponder is suitable for sensors that generate one of the aforementioned analog signals. In the proposed universal platform, a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) was used to detect variations of voltage or current. Similarly, a relaxation oscillator (RO) was used to detect changes in capacitance or resistance. Thus, the VCO and …

Temperature-Dependence Of Stress-Related Phenomena, Rahmat Saptono Dec 2014

Temperature-Dependence Of Stress-Related Phenomena, Rahmat Saptono

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Efforts have been made to develop a simple but physically sound model. The model was specifically proposed to capture, explain, and estimate the temperature sensitivity and strengthening mechanism phenomena in small volume material with particular reference to the roles grain boundary and surface. Model-inspired phenomenology approach was applied to reveal the key mechanisms and find directions for a more complete constitutive model. The model was developed in the limited space where diffusion is insignificant. It was assumed that the plastic flow was predominantly governed by the thermally-activated process of dislocation glide overcoming barriers. Simple mathematical functions were formulated and evaluated …

Experimental And Numerical Study Of Phase Transition Of Lifepo₄ Material In Lithium Ion Batteries, Md Noor E Alam Siddique Dec 2014

Experimental And Numerical Study Of Phase Transition Of Lifepo₄ Material In Lithium Ion Batteries, Md Noor E Alam Siddique

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Phase transition behavior of LiFePO4 material has been studied in this work. During electrochemical charge/discharge processes, LiFePO4 transforms into FePO4 and this electrochemically driven phase transition of the two-phase system results in a potential plateau in a battery discharge curve. Besides, battery performance, especially under high rates, depends critically on this two-phase transition. However, this phase transition mechanism in the LiFePO4 crystal structure has yet not been understood in details. Developing better understanding is essential for designing high performing, safe and stable batteries.Currently available phase transition models for LiFePO4, such as the classical `core-shrinking model' and recently the `domino cascade …

Biased perspectives of fisheries researchers may hinder scientific progress and effective management if limiting factors controlling productivity go unrecognized. We investigated whether river and lake researchers used different approaches when studying salmonid production and whether any differences were ecologically supported. We assessed 564 peer-reviewed papers published between 1966 and 2012 that studied salmonid production or surrogate variables (e.g., abundance, growth, biomass, population) and classified them into five major predictor variable categories: physical habitat, fertility (i.e., nutrients, bottom-up), biotic, temperature, and pollution. The review demonstrated that river researchers primarily analyzed physical habitat (65% of studies) and lake researchers primarily analyzed fertility …

How To Utilize Relevance Vectors To Collect Required Data For Modeling Water Quality Constitu-Ents, And Fine Sediment In Natural Systems? Case Study: Mud Lake, Idaho, Hussein Aly Batt, David King Stevens

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The development of monitoring programs for water quality and habitat assessment in surface waters is an ongoing challenge because of inherent difficulties in determining the effective spatial and temporal distribution of sites and trips. Recent advances in statistical learning theory, in which system characteristics are learned from data, point to the possibility of using the information content of data to shed light on monitoring results that provide sensitive and independent results. One of those techniques, multivariate relevance vector machines (MVRVM), creates as part of its algorithm subsets of a data set, called relevant vectors (RVs), that are most relevant for …

Basin-fill aquifers of the Southwestern United States are associated with elevated concentrations of arsenic (As) in groundwater. Many private domestic wells in the Cache Valley Basin, UT, have As concentrations in excess of the U.S. EPA drinking water limit. Thirteen sediment cores were collected from the center of the valley at the depth of the shallow groundwater and were sectioned into layers based on redoxmorphic features. Three of the layers, two from redox transition zones and one from a depletion zone, were used to establish microcosms. Microcosms were treated with groundwater (GW) or groundwater plus glucose (GW+G) to investigate the …

Study Of The Effect Of Wind Speed On Evaporation From Soil Through Integrated Modeling Of The Atmospheric Boundary Layer And Shallow Subsurface, Hossein Davarzani, Kathleen Smits, Ryan M. T Tolene, Tissa Illangasekare

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

In an effort to develop methods based on integrating the subsurface to the atmospheric boundary layer to estimate evaporation, we developed a model based on the coupling of Navier-Stokes free flow and Darcy flow in porous medium. The model was tested using experimental data to study the effect of wind speed on evaporation. The model consists of the coupled equations of mass conservation for two-phase flow in porous medium with single-phase flow in the free-flow domain under nonisothermal, nonequilibrium phase change conditions. In this model, the evaporation rate and soil surface temperature and relative humidity at the interface come directly …
