Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

© 1996-2012 IEEE. As an emerging multifunctional material, Gallium-based room temperature liquid metal has attracted a lot of attention for a variety of applications due to its mobility and deformability. However, controlling the motion of a liquid metal droplet accurately still remains unrevealed, which restricts its application in many fields. In this article, we propose a hybrid framework that would control the motion of a liquid metal droplet in a one-dimensional (1-D) fluidic channel. A dynamic model of a liquid metal droplet immersed in the electrolyte when an electrical field is applied to each end of the channel is discussed …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

© 2020, Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature. A systematic study was carried out to evaluate the effects of cold rolling and annealing processes on the ridging severity of ferritic stainless steel (FSS). Both microstructural refinement and texture optimisation were achieved with an optimised processing schedule to improve the ridging resistance of FSS. Coarse grain bands comprising of primarily {112} oriented grains were found to form inside cold-rolled and annealed FSS sheets. The effects of annealing schedules and the resultant microstructure and texture on the ridging behaviour of FSS are discussed. The results indicate that the reduction in the …

Admissibilisation Of Singular Interval Type-2 Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Systems With Time Delay, Zhiguang Feng, Huayang Zhang, Haiping Du, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

© The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2020. This study investigates the admissibility analysis and stabilisation problems for singular interval type-2 Takagi- Sugeno fuzzy systems with time delay. A generalised integral inequality method is used to obtain the delay-dependent condition. The criteria for admissibility analysis and controller synthesis are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities. In order to reduce the conservatism of the system, some free weighting matrices and advanced integral inequalities are introduced. Finally, two illustrative examples are exhibited to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Cartan Subalgebras For Non-Principal Twisted Groupoid C⁎-Algebras, Anna L. Duwenig, E Gillaspy, R Norton, S Reznikoff, S Wright

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

2020 Elsevier Inc. Renault proved in 2008 [22, Theorem 5.2] that if G is a topologically principal groupoid, then C0(G(0)) is a Cartan subalgebra in Cr⁎(G,Σ) for any twist Σ over G. However, there are many groupoids which are not topologically principal, yet their (twisted) C⁎-algebras admit Cartan subalgebras. This paper gives a dynamical description of a class of such Cartan subalgebras, by identifying conditions on a 2-cocycle c on G and a subgroupoid S⊆G under which Cr⁎(S,c) is Cartan in Cr⁎(G,c). When G is a discrete group, we also describe the Weyl groupoid and twist associated to these Cartan …

An Unsupervised Deep Learning Technique For Susceptibility Artifact Correction In Reversed Phase-Encoding Epi Images, Soan Duong, Son Lam Phung, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Mark M. Schira

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

© 2020 Elsevier Inc. Echo planar imaging (EPI) is a fast and non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging technique that supports data acquisition at high spatial and temporal resolutions. However, susceptibility artifacts, which cause the misalignment to the underlying structural image, are unavoidable distortions in EPI. Traditional susceptibility artifact correction (SAC) methods estimate the displacement field by optimizing an objective function that involves one or more pairs of reversed phase-encoding (PE) images. The estimated displacement field is then used to unwarp the distorted images and produce the corrected images. Since this conventional approach is time-consuming, we propose an end-to-end deep learning technique, …

Period-One Microwave Photonic Sensing By A Laser Diode With Optical Feedback, Bairun Nie, Yuxi Ruan, Yanguang Yu, Qinghua Guo, Jiangtao Xi, Jun Tong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

With external optical feedback (EOF), a laser diode (LD) can operate at different dynamic states. In this work, an LD with EOF is set at period-one (P1) oscillation state to generate microwave photonic (MWP) signal for sensing. Firstly, the P1 state boundary of the LD is determined and then the influence of the LD controllable parameters on the boundary is studied by solving the well-known Lang-Kobayashi equations. A set of parameters selection rule for designing an LD based MWP sensing system is obtained. In addition, a measurement algorithm for recovering the displacement from an MWP sensing signal is developed. By …

Using Cost-Sensitive Learning And Feature Selection Algorithms To Improve The Performance Of Imbalanced Classification, Fang Feng, Kuan-Ching Li, Jun Shen, Qingguo Zhou, Xuhui Yang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Imbalanced data problem is widely present in network intrusion detection, spam filtering, biomedical engineering, finance, science, being a challenge in many real-life data-intensive applications. Classifier bias occurs when traditional classification algorithms are used to deal with imbalanced data. As already known, the General Vector Machine (GVM) algorithm has good generalization ability, though it does not work well for the imbalanced classification. Additionally, the state-of-the-art Binary Ant Lion Optimizer (BALO) algorithm has high exploitability and fast convergence rate. Based on these facts, we have proposed in this paper a Cost-sensitive Feature selection General Vector Machine (CFGVM) algorithm based on GVM and …

Thermionic Emission In Nodal-Ring Semimetals, Suguo Chen, Sunchao Huang, Wenye Duan, Wei Shi, C Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

© 2020 Author(s). We theoretically investigate the thermionic emission from nodal-ring semimetals. The thermionic emission is found to be anisotropic in the x- and y-directions. The anisotropic emission can be enhanced by increasing the radius of nodal-ring b. The main feature of nodal-ring semimetals not only results in anisotropic thermionic emission but also affects the value of thermionic emission current density (TECD). The TECD of the lower branch of the energy-momentum dispersion increases with b, while the TECD of the upper branch decreases with b. Unlike in conventional materials, the TECD in nodal-ring semimetals depends on Fermi energy that is …

Effect Of Quantum Reflection Over The Barrier On Thermionic Refrigeration, Zeyu Zhang, Zelong Peng, Zhongshui Ma, C Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

© 2020 Author(s). We study the effect of quantum reflection over the barrier (ROB) in a thermionic cooling device. We find that the performance of refrigerators can be enhanced by the ROB effect if the bias voltage and the lattice thermal resistance of the semiconductor in the barrier region are both sufficiently high. Furthermore, the figure of merit Z T can be higher due to the ROB effect if the workfunction of the cathode is low and the lattice thermal resistance is high. The overall optimum Z T calculated with and without the ROB effect are 6.5 and 7.1, respectively. …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

© 2020 Author(s). A magnetic field sensor is designed and fabricated using a piezoelectric face shear mode Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT)/Metglas magneto-electric (ME) composite. An outstanding ME coupling coefficient up to 1600 V/(cm Oe) was experimentally achieved, being ∼50% higher than the value from the extensional PMN-PT/Metglas ME composite with the same volume. The detection limit was found to be 2 × 10-6 Oe for the DC magnetic field, while it was 2 × 10-8 Oe for the AC magnetic field. The sensitivity of the face shear mode PMN-PT/Metglas ME composite is about one order of magnitude higher than that of a …

Reachable Set Estimation For Neutral Markovian Jump Systems With Mode-Dependent Time-Varying Delays, Xiangli Jiang, Guihua Xia, Zhiguang Feng, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

© 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd This study, under zero initial condition, aims to characterize the reachable set bound for a class of neutral Markovian jump systems (NMJSs) with interval time-varying delays and bounded disturbances. To begin with, the time-delays are considered to be mode-dependent while delay mode and system mode are different. By utilizing free-weighting matrix method and reciprocally convex combination technique, an ellipsoid-like bound is characterized for the concerned NMJS with completely known transition probabilities. Based on the provided analytical framework, the case of same delay mode and system mode is also handled. Then, benefitting from a …

Optimization Of Maintenances Following Proof Tests For The Final Element Of A Safety-Instrumented System, Aibo Zhang, Tieling Zhang, Anne Barros, Yiliu Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

2019 The Authors Safety-instrumented systems (SISs) have been widely installed to prevent accidental events and mitigate their consequences. Mechanical final elements of SISs often become vulnerable with time due to degradations, but the particulars in SIS operations and assessment impede the adaption of state-of-art research results on maintenances into this domain. This paper models the degradation of SIS final element as a stochastic process. Based on the observed information during a proof test, it is essential to determine an optimal maintenance strategy by choosing a preventive maintenance (PM) or corrective maintenance (CM), as well deciding what degree of mitigation of …

Performance Of Ballast Influenced By Deformation And Degradation: Laboratory Testing And Numerical Modeling, Buddhima Indraratna, Ngoc Trung Ngo, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This paper presents a study on the deformation and degradation responses of railway ballast using large-scale laboratory testing and computational modeling approaches. A series of large-scale triaxial tests were carried out to investigate the ballast breakage responses under cyclic train loading subjected to varying frequencies, f=10-40  Hz. The role of recycled rubber energy-absorbing mats (REAMs) on reducing ballast breakage was also examined. Laboratory test results show that the ballast experiences significant degradation (breakage) and deformation, while the inclusion of REAMs can reduce the ballast breakage up to about 35%. Numerical modeling using the coupled discrete-continuum approach [coupled discrete-element method-finite-difference method …
