Energy use is an essential aspect of many human activities, from individual to industrial scale. However, increasing global energy demand and the challenges posed by environmental change make understanding energy use patterns crucial. Accurate predictions of future energy consumption can greatly influence decision-making, supply-demand stability and energy efficiency. Energy use data often exhibits time-series patterns, which creates complexity in forecasting. Classifying plant species within the Liliaceae and Amaryllidaceae families presents inherent challenges due to the complex genetic diversity and overlapping morphological traits among species. This study explores the difficulties in accurate classification by comparing 11 supervised learning algorithms applied to DNA barcode data, aiming to enhance the precision of species family classification in these taxonomically intricate plant families. The ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase large sub-unit (rbcL) gene, selected as a DNA barcode locus for plants, is used to represent species within the Amaryllidaceae and Liliaceae families. Subsea pipelines are a cost-effective and reliable way to transport hydrocarbons in offshore oil and gas development. However, dropped objects can pose hazards and cause damage to pipelines. This dissertation briefly introduces the hazards and hidden dangers caused by dropped containers, discusses motion simulation methods for different object shapes, and reviews risk assessment procedures for handling dropped objects in offshore operations. Ongoing research at the University of New Orleans' towing tank on dropped container models is also discussed. This article introduces a generative association rule (AR)-based recommendation system (RS) using a recurrent neural network approach implemented when a user searches for an item in a browsing session. It is proposed to overcome the limitations of the traditional AR-based RS which implements query-based sessions that are not adaptive to input series, thus failing to generate recommendations. Josephson junctions have garnered significant attention due to their unique electronic properties and applications in quantum devices. In this thesis, we investigate the fabrication processes and characterization of two-dimensional (2D) Josephson junctions consisting of layered van der Waals materials: niobium diselenide (2H-NbSe2) and few layered tungsten ditelluride (1T’-WTe2). The reduction of dimensionality can bring forth unique characteristics in certain materials that are not seen in their bulk counterparts, making them prime candidates for physical exploration. 2H-NbSe2 is an s-wave superconductor at temperatures near and below 7 K. 1T’-WTe2 is a semimetal in bulk but …

Serum amyloid A (SAA) is a family of proteins, the plasma levels of which may increase >1000-fold in acute inflammatory states. We investigated the role of SAA in sepsis using mice deficient in all three acute-phase SAA isoforms (SAA-TKO). SAA deficiency significantly increased mortality rates in the three experimental sepsis mouse models: cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), cecal slurry (CS) injection, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatments. SAA-TKO mice had exacerbated lung pathology compared to wild-type (WT) mice after CLP. With a growing human population, urbanization is impeding a plethora of natural waterways. Of these, urban ponds play a vital role in nutrient sequestration, flood prevention, and habitat sanctuaries. However, nutrient loading can reduce habitat effectiveness and promote harmful algae blooms. To reduce internal nutrient loads, a biological-chemical treatment strategy consisting of floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) and lanthanum were applied to two urban retention ponds, Densmore and Wilderness Ridge Ponds. To measure effectiveness, chlorophyll-a samples were collected and correlated with Sentinel-2. Dysregulated eEF2K expression is implicated in the pathogenesis of many human cancers, including triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), making it a plausible therapeutic target. However, specific eEF2K inhibitors with potent anti-cancer activity have not been available so far. Targeted protein degradation has emerged as a new strategy for drug discovery. Abstract—Objective: We propose a new neural network architecture that accepts point clouds and outputs 3D velocity profiles for aneurysm geometries. Methods: We generated a synthetic aneurysm 3D flow dataset using CFD and used it to train our model architecture and compare it with other popular architectures like U-net and PointNet. We incorporate tools for improving model performance such as incorporating a distance function, a physics-informed loss to enforce the law of mass conservation, and the Huber loss to learn patterns across heterogeneous velocity components of multiple dimensions. High-performance reconfigurable computers (HPRCs) make use of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) for efficient emulation of quantum algorithms. Generally, algorithm-specific architectures are implemented on the FPGAs and there is very little flexibility. Moreover, mapping a quantum algorithm onto its equivalent FPGA emulation architecture is challenging. In this work, we present an automation framework for converting quantum circuits to their equivalent FPGA emulation architectures. The framework processes quantum circuits represented in Quantum Assembly Language (QASM) and derives high-level descriptions of the hardware emulation architectures for High-Level Synthesis (HLS) on HPRCs. Recent advances in additive manufacturing technologies have already led to wide-scale adoption of 3D-printed parts in various industries. The expansion in choice of materials that can be processed, particularly using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and the steady advancements in dimensional accuracy control have extended the range of applications far beyond rapid prototyping. However, additive manufacturing still has considerable limitations compared to traditional and subtractive manufacturing processes. Running computer vision algorithms requires complex devices with lots of computing power, these types of devices are not well suited for space deployment. The harsh radiation environment and limited power budgets have hindered the ability of running advanced computer vision algorithms in space. This problem makes running an on-orbit servicing detection algorithm very difficult. This work proposes using a low powered FPGA to accelerate the computer vision algorithms that enable satellite component feature extraction. The San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum requested an interactive water vortex exhibit to both engage and entertain inquisitive guests, ages two to eight. The goal was to design and manufacture an exhibit that would educate its users on the fluid mechanics behind water vortices. They activate the mechanics by spinning a wheel, which is perceived as the catalyst to manipulate the flow of water to successfully create a whirlpool.
