Minerrouter : Effective Message Routing Using Contact-Graphs And Location Prediction In Underground Mine, Abhay Goyal, Sanjay Madria, Samuel Frimpong
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Location-based distributed communication in underground mines has been a hard problem to solve due to unreliable centralized architecture such as leaky feeder systems, high attenuation, and the unavailability of GPS signals. Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) enable decentralized message routing using the store-carry-forward method that can help in creating situational awareness needed to handle emergency and disaster scenarios. The ability to predict where the DTN nodes (miner) might have been at/are headed to (with respect to the mine regions and pillars) at different times, combined with contact-based routing and intelligent handling of buffer, can be used for better delivery of messages. …

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
Equipment performance assessment or prediction has usually been done using the conventional approach. Organization is often too busy to focus on improvement opportunities for equipment performance. Opportunities identifications are heavily reliant on expert opinion and the methods used often vary from one person to another depending on the knowledge they possess. The benefits of simplistic and realistic equipment performance prediction would significantly improve maintenance costs and hence could help to reduce the total operating cost of the asset. In this research work, a surface condenser was used as a case study. The solution proposed in this research work is to …

Low-cost biosensors that can rapidly and widely detect viruses are critical for faster diagnosis and treatment decision-making, especially for infections. The commonly used field-effect transistor is sensitive to the biomarker's detection but struggles with precise detection, particularly of nontargets such as ions and proteins. To overcome this limitation, we developed a field-effect transistor biosensor design based on MXene-graphene materials to increase the accuracy and sensitivity of virus detection. Based on the hybridization process between two complementary DNA strands, single-stranded nucleic acids were immobilized on the sensing surface via 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and glutaraldehyde to capture the nucleic acids of the target virus. …

An Algorithm Based On Priority Rules For Solving A Multi-Drone Routing Problem In Hazardous Waste Collection, Youssef Harrath Dr., Jihene Kaabi Dr.
Research & Publications
This research investigates the problem of assigning pre-scheduled trips to multiple drones to collect hazardous waste from different sites in the minimum time. Each drone is subject to essential restrictions: maximum flying capacity and recharge operation. The goal is to assign the trips to the drones so that the waste is collected in the minimum time. This is done if the total flying time is equally distributed among the drones. An algorithm was developed to solve the problem. The algorithm is based on two main ideas: sort the trips according to a given priority rule and assign the current trip …

L∞ Bounds For Transient Growth In Repetitive And Iterative Learning Control Systems, Douglas A. Bristow, John R. Singler
L∞ Bounds For Transient Growth In Repetitive And Iterative Learning Control Systems, Douglas A. Bristow, John R. Singler
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper revisits the problem of large transient growth in Iterative Learning Control (ILC) and Repetitive Process Control (RPC) systems. In ILC and RPC problems a process is repeated iteratively, with new control calculations occurring in between each iteration. Large transient growth refers to the propensity of some control algorithms to grow error exponentially before eventually converging. While robust monotonic convergence algorithms (in which monotonic convergence is guaranteed usually in exchange for a small loss in performance) have largely eliminated the concern for large transient growth in ILC, similar results cannot always be obtained in RPC. The emergence of additive …

Telemedicine has the potential to improve access and delivery of healthcare to diverse and aging populations. Recent advances in technology allow for remote monitoring of physiological measures such as heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood glucose, and blood pressure. However, the ability to accurately detect falls and monitor physical activity remotely without invading privacy or remembering to wear a costly device remains an ongoing concern. Our proposed system utilizes a millimeter-wave (mmwave) radar sensor (IWR6843ISK-ODS) connected to an NVIDIA Jetson Nano board for continuous monitoring of human activity. We developed a PointNet neural network for real-time human activity monitoring that can …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become instrumental in advancing multi-frame image super-resolution (SR), a technique that merges multiple low-resolution images of the same scene into a high-resolution image. In this paper, a novel deep learning multi-frame SR algorithm is introduced. The proposed CNN model, named Exponential Fusion of Interpolated Frames Network (EFIF-Net), seamlessly integrates fusion and restoration within an end-to-end network. Key features of the new EFIF-Net include a custom exponentially weighted fusion (EWF) layer for image fusion and a modification of the Residual Channel Attention Network for restoration to deblur the fused image. Input frames are registered with subpixel …

Pleated Plasma Membrane Complex In Spermatids Of The Western Siren, Siren Nettingi (Caudata: Sirenidae), S.E. Trauth
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
I investigated the pleated plasma membrane complex of linear folds and biflagellar entities in developing spermatids of the Western Siren, Siren nettingi. My primary goal was to reveal the ultrastructural morphology of these distinctive cellular folds (usually 8 in number) as they support the flagellar formation of biflagellated sperm found in this salamander and in other members in the family Sirenidae. My results reveal that the biflagellar components (2 sets of axonemes, undulating membranes, and axial fibers), termed biflagellar complex, develop between folds or are attached onto these folds. The folds themselves are transitory and do not directly contribute to …

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper introduces a path planning algorithm for a system with squid dynamics in a cluttered environment. We capture the complex interactions of fin, arms, and body patterning by analyzing experimental data collected from observing squid motion. We extract nine motion primitives to build the control sequence for a time-optimal trajectory. This task is formulated as a mixed-integer program, and we generate the minimum-time trajectory using a sample-based approach. Numerical simulations illustrate the efficacy of this strategy and motivate ongoing and future efforts to exploration of squid motion features, improvement of the modeling, and experimental demonstrations of the motion planning …

Enhancing Multilingual Sentence Representation Learning For The Job Recruitment Domain, Napat Laosaengpha
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
With the advancement in natural language processing (NLP), there has been significant development in multilingual pretraining sentence encoder. Typically, these pretraining models are trained on large-scale datasets that consist of general text data from various sources such as Wikipedia. However, the general proposed models aren't enough to understand contexts in such a domain-specific, especially in the job recruitment domain. It is due to its niche nature and the lack of readily available related information. To enhance the existing multilingual pretraining sentence encoder and mitigate the aforementioned problems, we first propose multi-task dual-encoder framework to improve the sentence encoder for general-purpose …

Quantification Of Antiviral Drug Tenofovir (Tfv) By Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (Sers) Using Cumulative Distribution Functions (Cdfs), Marguerite R. Butler, Jana Hrncirova, Meredith Clark, Sucharita Dutta, John B. Cooper
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an ultrasensitive spectroscopic technique that generates signal-enhanced fingerprint vibrational spectra of small molecules. However, without rigorous control of SERS substrate active sites, geometry, surface area, or surface functionality, SERS is notoriously irreproducible, complicating the consistent quantitative analysis of small molecules. While evaporatively prepared samples yield significant SERS enhancement resulting in lower detection limits, the distribution of these enhancements along the SERS surface is inherently stochastic. Acquiring spatially resolved SERS spectra of these dried surfaces, we have shown that this enhancement is governed by a power law as a function of analyte concentration. Consequently, by definition, …

Enabling machines to learn measures of human activity from bioelectric signals has many applications in human-machine interaction and healthcare. However, labeled activity recognition datasets are costly to collect and highly varied, which challenges machine learning techniques that rely on large datasets. Furthermore, activity recognition in practice needs to account for user trust - models are motivated to enable interpretability, usability, and information privacy. The objective of this dissertation is to improve adaptability and trustworthiness of machine learning models for human activity recognition from bioelectric signals. We improve adaptability by developing pretraining techniques that initialize models for later specialization to unseen …

Predicting Quality Of Life In Driving Scene Using Image Recognition Techniques And User Group Information, Ployrada Suvarnakuta
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study presents a machine learning approach for predicting perceived urban Quality of Life (QoL) by integrating visual features from street-level imagery with personal attributes, including demographic, socioeconomic, and travel behavior data. Using datasets from Bangkok and London, we trained supervised models—Support Vector Machines and Multilayer Perceptrons—under multiple input configurations to evaluate the contribution of each data type. Results show that combining visual and personal features improves prediction accuracy compared to using visual features alone. Statistical feature selection identified income, education, housing stability, and travel patterns as consistently important predictors, with some variation across urban contexts. These findings underscore the …
