The Effects Of Trace Organic Carbon On Aluminum Solubility, Fernand J. Tiblier Jan 1986

The Effects Of Trace Organic Carbon On Aluminum Solubility, Fernand J. Tiblier

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Alum jar tests were performed on raw portable waters of varying TOC. Parameters monitored include alum dose, pH and mixing conditions. Finished waters were analyzed for residual aluminum, residual TOC and hardness in order to investigate the effects of TOC on aluminum residual as would be encountered by alum coagulation and lime softening process in practice.

Three-dimensional graphs of residual aluminum, residual TOC and pH were constructed to illustrate the relationship among these measured parameters for the different sources. Statistical analyses were conducted to verify aluminum-organic complexation at reduced alum dosages for varying TOCs; initial TOC, reaction pH and dose …

An Algorithm For Resource Allocation Requiring Low Overhead Communication, Ann Marks Jan 1986

An Algorithm For Resource Allocation Requiring Low Overhead Communication, Ann Marks

Computer Science Technical Reports

A heuristic algorithm for allocating resource units to sites in a distributed system is presented. Starting with a given allocation of sites, the algorithm performs a series of optimizations involving pairs of sites in an attempt to improve the worst pair-wise imbalance present in the system; termination occurs when no further improvement is possible. After outlining the general form of the algorithm, which effectively defines an entire family of algorithms, we present theoretical results that speak to the performance of the algorithm as measured in the number of optimizations that can be done, the amount of control communication required and …

Finding Largest Empty Circles With Location Constraints, L Paul Chew, Robert L. Scot Drysdale Jan 1986

Finding Largest Empty Circles With Location Constraints, L Paul Chew, Robert L. Scot Drysdale

Computer Science Technical Reports

Let S be a set of n points in the plane and let CH(S) represent the convex hull of S. The Largest Empty Circle (LEC) problem is the problem of finding the largest circle centered with CH(S) such that no point of S lies within the circle. Shamos and Hoey (SH75) outlined an algorithm for solving this problem in time O(n log n) by first computing the Voronoi diagram, V(S), in time O(n log n), then using V(S) and CH(S) to compute the largest empty circle in time O(n). In a recent paper [Tou83], Toussaint pointed out some problems with …

Producing Software Using Tools In A Workstation Environment, Mark Sherman, Robert L. Scot Drysdale

Computer Science Technical Reports

We discuss how we taught students to build and use translation, interpretive, editing and monitoring tools in an undergraduate software engineering course. Students used the tools on low-cost workstations (Macintoshes) to build large, group projects. The students' projects used all available features of workstation environments, including graphics, windows, fonts, mice, networks, and sound generators. We found that 1) the use of tools increased student productivity, 2) a shift in a data structure and algorithm topics is needed to cover material relevant for workstation environments, 3) new topics in system design are required for a workstation environment, 4) traditional material can …

The Pairwise Intersection Problem For Monotone Polygons, David B. Levine Jan 1986

The Pairwise Intersection Problem For Monotone Polygons, David B. Levine

Computer Science Technical Reports

Geometric intersection problems arise in a number of areas of computer science including graphics and VLSI design rule checking. Previous work has concentrated on solving the pairwise intersection problem for line segments and iso-oriented rectangles. This thesis extends that work by presenting efficient algorithms to solve the pairwise intersection problem for monotone polygons. For general segments, the problem has been solved in O(N+I)*logN) time using a sweeping line technique, where N is the number of segments and I is the number of intersections reported. We combine this technique with approaches taken to solve the iso-oriented rectangle problem to yield an …

Water Quality Management Studies For Water Resources Development In The Bear River Basin, Darwin L. Sorensen, Craig Caupp, William J. Grenney, Steve Eberl, Jay J. Messer, Phillip Ludvigsen, Charles W. Ariss Jan 1986

Water Quality Management Studies For Water Resources Development In The Bear River Basin, Darwin L. Sorensen, Craig Caupp, William J. Grenney, Steve Eberl, Jay J. Messer, Phillip Ludvigsen, Charles W. Ariss

Reports

Summary: The quality of water that develops in the proposed reservoirs of the Upper Bear River Storage Project will determine the possible uses of the water. Previous studies of water quality in the Bear River and its tributaries have reported water quality problems relating to nitrate ion, sanitary indicator bacteria, suspended solids, and phosphorus concentrations. Most point sources of water pollution inthe basin have been eliminated or improved in quality, but nonpoint sources of pollution continue to degrade the quality of the Bear River. Concentrations of phosphours have been sufficiently high to encourage dense algal growth and create eutrophic conditions …

Feasibility Of Incorporating Aquaculture, Solar Pond Energy, And Mineral Extraction Technologies To Control Localized Sources Of Salinity In River Systems, J. Paul Riley Jan 1986

Feasibility Of Incorporating Aquaculture, Solar Pond Energy, And Mineral Extraction Technologies To Control Localized Sources Of Salinity In River Systems, J. Paul Riley

Reports

Salinity poses a serious and continuing problem to the full utilization of water resources in many river basins of western U.S. A variety of management measures have been employed to mitigate the damaging effects of salinity on agricultural crops as well as on municipal and industrial uses of water. The Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Act illustrates the logic of addressing the problem on a basin wide basis under a strategy that give priority to those localized sources of salinity that contribute disproportionately large amounts of salt to the system. It remains then to devise control measures specific to each …

On The Mean Time Between Failures For Repairable Systems, Max Engelhardt, Lee J. Bain Jan 1986

On The Mean Time Between Failures For Repairable Systems, Max Engelhardt, Lee J. Bain

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Much of the recent work on modeling repairable systems involves Poisson processes with nonconstant intensity functions, viz, nonhomogeneous Poisson processes. Since times between failures are not identically distributed when the process is nonhomogeneous, it is not clear what concept should take the place of the mean time between failures in assessing the reliability of a repairable system. A number of alternate concepts can be found in the literature. We investigate the relationship between two of the most frequently considered alternatives: the reciprocal of the intensity function, and the mean waiting time from t until the next failure. Theorem 1 states …

An Exact Analysis For Efficient Computation Of Random-Pattern Testability In Combinational Circuits, Sharad C. Seth, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Vishwani Agrawal Jan 1986

An Exact Analysis For Efficient Computation Of Random-Pattern Testability In Combinational Circuits, Sharad C. Seth, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Vishwani Agrawal

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Experimental evidence shows that low testability in a typical circuit is much more likely due to poor observability than poor controllability. Thus, from theoretical and practical standpoints, it is important to develop an accurate model for observability computation. One such model, in terms of supergates, is proposed in the first part of this paper thus complimenting our earlier work. It is now possible to obtain exact random-pattern testability for each line in a circuit.

The second part of the paper analyzes the supegate structure of a circuit from a graph theoretic viewpoint. Finding a supergate is related to determining the …

Economic Evaluation Of Conservation Concepts For Municipal Water Systems, Trevor C. Hughes, Rangesan Narayanan, Mac Mckee, A. Bruce Bishop, Robert Leconte, Sumani Al-Hassan

Reports

Five concepts for conservation of municipal water supply are analyzed from an economic efficiency perspectice. They include: 1) seasonal pricing (for reduction of peak period water use), 2) dual water systems (separate high quality drinking water and untreated outdoor irrigation systems), 3) imported water transmission facility capacity optimization, 4) flow restricting devices, and 5) short-term rationing concepts. Optimization models, including generalized model generators, were developed for analysis of the first three concepts and demonstrated by applications to cities in Utah. The flow restricting device and short-term rationsing concept analyses applied approaches taken from the literature to example sites in Utah. …

Total Refraction At Oblique Incidence By A Transparent Bilayer Coating On A High-Index Transparent Or Absorbing Substrate, R. M.A. Azzam, Karim Javily Dec 1985

Total Refraction At Oblique Incidence By A Transparent Bilayer Coating On A High-Index Transparent Or Absorbing Substrate, R. M.A. Azzam, Karim Javily

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Transparent bilayer coatings that produce total refraction (TR) of obliquely incident monochromatic light into an underlying substrate are considered. When the substrate is transparent, it is shown that TR takes place without any accompanying change of polarization. Totally refracting bilayers are realizable in the IR where high-refractive-index substrates are available. This is illustrated by a BaF2–ZnSe bilayer on a Ge substrate at a 10.6-μm (CO2-laser) wavelength and 45° angle of incidence. Limited changes of the angle of incidence, wavelength, and refractive indices and thicknesses of the two films of the bilayer are introduced, and their effects …

Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee Dec 1985

Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Using SPICE experiments, it has been possible to verify most of the important aspects of electronic holography. The generation and properties of dynamic echoes under different types of nonlinearities have been extensively tested, and some new information has been garnered in the process. The case of pulse and generalized memory echoes has also been tested, and the results have been fairly satisfactory. Most of all, the simplicity with which the intriguing concept of memory echoes has translated into the circuit implementation on SPICE, and the closeness of the results to predicted behavior have been somewhat of a pleasant surprise.

Characterizing Soil Deformation By Direct Measurement Within The Profile, Randall K. Wood, Larry G. Wells Nov 1985

Characterizing Soil Deformation By Direct Measurement Within The Profile, Randall K. Wood, Larry G. Wells

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A unique feature of the University of Kentucky soil bin enables deformation to be characterized by studying a cross-sectional soil profile grid pattern. Modular sections of the bin are laterally removed to expose the cross-section after passes of a pneumatic tire.

The measured displacements of the grid points were converted to values of volumetric strain and then compared to soil density as measured by a dual probe gamma-ray density gauge following tests at various soil conditions. Final soil bulk density determinations using the two methods were not statistically different..
