An algorithm based on the Marquardt-Levenberg least-square optimization method has been shown by S. Kollias and D. Anastassiou (IEEE Trans. on Circuits Syst. vol.36, no.8, p.1092-101, Aug. 1989) to be a much more efficient training method than gradient descent, when applied to some small feedforward neural networks. Yet, for many applications, the increase in computational complexity of the method outweighs any gain in learning rate obtained over current training methods. However, the least-squares method can be more efficiently implemented on parallel architectures than standard methods. This is demonstrated by comparing computation times and learning rates for the least-squares method implemented …

This paper describes the testing methodology for the Broadcast Translation Circuit. It covers logic simulation, timing simulation, and a single push-button test for the device. The document is intended to be a supplement to documents WUCS-89-52 and WUCS-90-19, which outline the design of the BTC in full details. The intent of a push-button test is to have a single test that causes the device to process every type of packets that it could receive. This would include various combination of RC and OP fields, a test that examines every table entry thoroughly, as well as a test of the parity …

The Equivalence Of Connectionist Energy Minimization And Propositional Calculus Satisfiability, Gadi Pinkas
The Equivalence Of Connectionist Energy Minimization And Propositional Calculus Satisfiability, Gadi Pinkas
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Quadratic energy minimization is the essence of certain connectionist models. We define high order connectionist models to support the minimization of high order energy functions and we prove that high order energy functions are equivalent to quadratic ones. We show that the standard quadratic models can minimize high order functions using additional hidden units and we demonstrate trade-offs of size (number of hidden units), order of the model, and fan-out. We prove an equivalence between the problem of satisfiability in propositional calculus and the problem of minimization of energy functions. An energy function describes a Well Formed Formula (WFF) if …

The Fat-Pyramid: A Robust Network For Parallel Computation, Ronald I. Greenberg
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This paper shows that a fat-pyramid of area Theta(A) built from processors of size lg A requires only O(lg^2 A) slowdown in bit-times to simulate any network of area A under very general conditions. Specifically, there is no restriction on processor size (amount of attached memory) or number of processors in the competing network, nor is the assumption of unit wire delay required. This paper also derives upper bounds on the slowdown required by a fat-pyramid to simulate a network of larger area in the case of unit wire delay.

Diagnostics Software For Concurrent Processing Computer Systems, Robert L. Jones Iii
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Diagnostics software for analyzing ATAMM based concurrent processing systems is presented in this thesis. ATAMM (Algorithm to Architecture Mapping Model) is a new model developed by researchers at Old Dominion University and the NASA-Langley Research Center. ATAMM is capable of modeling the execution of large grain algorithms on distributed data flow architectures. Investigating a real or simulated ATAMM based system requires the aid of software tools. The software tool presented in this thesis can evaluate the behavior and performance of an ATAMM based system. The tool graphically portrays algorithm activities and processor activities. The tool's measurement capabilities indicate computing speed, …

This project provides a good case study of expert system development with untrained experts over a short period of time. We describe the development of a working medical screening and diagnosis expert system for use at the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) clinics in Madison County, Illinois. The system was designed and implemented over the period of four months. A large number of knowledge acquisition techniques were employed, some of them customized in ways that greatly increased their effectiveness. This paper explores the development of THE WIC Advisor, from problem definition through expert system delivery. The knowledge acquisition methods used …

Typically, those who discuss Risk management envision a two-step process wherein, first, Risk is more or less objectively appraised and, second, the acceptability of those Risks is subjectively evaluated. This paper questions the philosophical foundations of that approach.

Oxidation-Reduction Behavior Of Undoped And Sr-Doped Lamno3: Defect Structure, Electrical Conductivity, And Thermoelectric Power, J. H. Kuo, Harlan U. Anderson, Don M. Sparlin
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity measurements were performed for undoped and Sr-doped LaMnO3 as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure. The results of electrical conductivity showed typical p-type behavior. As reduction proceeded, the electrical conductivity of these LaMnO3-based perovskites decreased with P 1 4O2. The analysis of the electrical conductivity data was performed by extending the defect model from a previous thermogravimetric (TG) study. The measured Seebeck coefficients were found to be positive except for the most reducing conditions when the decomposition into multiple phases occurred. The Heikes formula was adopted to interpret …

A Model Of Dc Glow Discharges With Abnormal Cathode Fall, Karl H. Schoenbach, Hao Chen, G. Schaefer
Bioelectrics Publications
A model for an abnormal glow discharge, including a self‐consistent analysis of the cathode fall, was developed. It combines microscopic particle simulation by means of Monte Carlo methods with a fluid model of the gas discharge. The model allows calculations of the steady‐state electrical field distribution, the charged‐particle densities, and the current densities along the axis of the discharge. The model was used to simulate a glow discharge in 80% He and 20% SF6 at a pressure of 8 Torr with a current density of 1 A/cm2. The computed discharge voltage agrees well with measured values. The …

Pipe Network Simulation Analysis Computer Program - Netwk, Roland W. Jeppson
Reports
This manual describes the data that a versatile computer program USU-NETWK requires to complete a time dependent solution of flowrates and pressures throughout a pipe network. This program can be used for steady-state analysis and design, as well as simulation solutions through some period of time. In fact, unless specified otherwise, a steady-state solution is assumed.
In this user's manual there is no attempt to describe the methods used in USU-NETWK to provide solutions to either analysis or design problems. Rather this user's manual is devoted exclusive to describing the input data, and the use of USU-NETWK in solving various …

PEP Overview
A property Estimation Program (PEP), utilizing MCI-property, TSA-property and property correlations and UNIFAC-derived activity coefficients, has been developed for the Apple Macintosh microcomputer to provide the user with several approaches to estimate S, Kow, Pv, H, Koc, and BCF depending on the information available.
Structural information required for the MCi and UNIFAC calculation routines can be entered using either Simplified Molecular Identification and Line Entry System (SMILES) notation or connection tables generated with commercially available two-dimensional drawing programs. The TSA module accepts 3-D atomic coordinates entered manually or directly reads coordinate files generated by molecular modeling software. The …
