A Unified Model For Shared-Memory And Message-Passing Systems, Kenneth Goldman, Katherine Yelick Jan 1993

A Unified Model For Shared-Memory And Message-Passing Systems, Kenneth Goldman, Katherine Yelick

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

A unified model of distributed systems that accomodates both shared-memory and message-passing communication is proposed. An extension of the I/O automaton model of Lynch and Tuttle, the model provides a full range of types of atomic accesses to shared memory, from basic reads and writes to read-modify-write. In addition to supporting the specification and verification of shared memory algorithms, the unified model is particularly helpful for proving correspondences between atomic shared objects and invocation-response systems and for proving the correctness of systems that contain both message passing and shared memory (such as a network of shared-memory multiprocessors or a distributed …

Symphony: A Hardware, Operating System, And Protocol Processing Architecture For Distributed Multimedia Applications, Andreas D. Bovopoulos, R. Gopalakrishnan, Saied Hosseini Jan 1993

Symphony: A Hardware, Operating System, And Protocol Processing Architecture For Distributed Multimedia Applications, Andreas D. Bovopoulos, R. Gopalakrishnan, Saied Hosseini

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper explores the architectural requirements for computers to be able to process multimedia data streams such as video and audio. The I/O subsystem is shown to be a bottleneck, and a network backplane approach is suggested to alleviate this. The need to provide end-to-end performance guarantees requires predictable performance of intra-machine communication, and a schedulable bus with reservation is proposed to achieve this. In addition this requires operating system (OS) mechanisms to negotiate and enforce QoS requirements of applications. A real-time microkernel executive is proposed for each autonomous unit. Requirements for real-time microkernel exeutive is proposed for each autonomous …

A Comparison Of Queueing, Cluster And Distributed Computing Systems, Joseph A. Kaplan, Michael L. Nelson Jan 1993

A Comparison Of Queueing, Cluster And Distributed Computing Systems, Joseph A. Kaplan, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Using workstation clusters for distributed computing has become popular with the proliferation of inexpensive, powerful workstations. Workstation clusters offer both a cost effective alternative to batch processing and an easy entry into parallel computing. However, a number of workstations on a network does not constitute a cluster. Cluster management software is necessary to harness the collective computing power. A variety of cluster management and queuing systems are compared: Distributed Queueing Systems (DQS), Condor, Load Leveler, Load Balancer, Load Sharing Facility (LSF - formerly Utopia), Distributed Job Manager (DJM), Computing in Distributed Networked Environments (CODINE), and NQS/Exec. The systems differ in …

Studies Of Electron-Beam Penetration And Free-Carrier Generation In Diamond Films, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach, C. Molina, W. W. Hofer Jan 1993

Studies Of Electron-Beam Penetration And Free-Carrier Generation In Diamond Films, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach, C. Molina, W. W. Hofer

Bioelectrics Publications

Experimental observations of the energy‐dependent electron‐beam penetration in type II‐A natural diamond are reported. The experimental data are compared with results obtained from numerical Monte Carlo simulations, and the results are in very good agreement. The results also reveal that a threshold energy of about 125 keV is necessary for complete penetration for a 35 μm sample. It is found that over the 30–180 keV range, the energy dependence of the penetration depth and total path length exhibits a power‐law relation. Monte Carlo simulations have also been performed to investigate the excess carrier‐generation profiles within diamond for a set of …

Reliability Trend Analyses With Statistical Confidence Limits Using The Luke Reliability Trend Chart, Stephen R. Luke Jan 1993

Reliability Trend Analyses With Statistical Confidence Limits Using The Luke Reliability Trend Chart, Stephen R. Luke

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In electronic systems, it is interesting to understand exactly how the reliability is changing with time. Dynamic performance changes when a system passes from infant mortality stage into useful life phase and when the system passes from useful life phase into wearout phase. Dynamic performance also changes when the system is redesigned or when the system is acted on by a number of other outside forces such as a change in maintenance policy, escalation of alignment problems, or a change in training program. It is important to know when a system is changing dynamically in order to assess design, policy …

The Use Of A Factory Simulation To Evaluate A Flexible Control Structure For Integrated Manufacturing, Ling Ling Pan Jan 1993

The Use Of A Factory Simulation To Evaluate A Flexible Control Structure For Integrated Manufacturing, Ling Ling Pan

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Once a control structure for an integrated manufacturing system is decided upon, manufacturing activities are limited by that structure. A flexible control structure is presented as an approach for accommodating a variety of manufacturing activities, without being limited to a single control structure. A flexible control structure is one that allows multiple types of control structure in the manufacturing process. For example, both hierarchical and non-hierarchical structures may be used in a flexible structure. The properties of a flexible control structure are discussed from the point of view of graph theory.

Control structures for automated manufacturing are difficult to evaluate …

Exact Dominance Without Search In Decision Trees, Nilesh L. Jain, Ronald P. Loui Dec 1992

Exact Dominance Without Search In Decision Trees, Nilesh L. Jain, Ronald P. Loui

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In order to improve understanding of how planning and decision analysis relate, we propose a hybrid model containing concepts from both. This model is comparable to [Hartman90], with slightly more detail. Dominance is simple concept in decision theory. In a restricted version of our model, we give conditions under which dominance can be detected without search: that is, it can be used as a pruning strategy to avoid growing large trees. This investigation follows the lead of [Wellman87]. The conditions seem hard to meet, but may nevertheless be useful in forward-chaining situations without focus, such as [Breese87]. It may be …

A Synthetic Environment For Satellite Modeling And Satellite Orbital Motion, David L. Pond Dec 1992

A Synthetic Environment For Satellite Modeling And Satellite Orbital Motion, David L. Pond

Theses and Dissertations

Analysts tasked to study satellites moving in space must often rely on photographs to conduct their analysis. Often these photographs do not adequately represent how satellites move in space, their spatial relationships, or their interaction with other satellites. What analysts need is a three- dimensional synthetic environment that depicts satellites as they actually move and interact in space. This thesis addresses the early development of the Satellite Modeler (SM), a system that allows analysts to study, satellite motion and maneuvering of computer aided design (CAD) models of those satellites in a three-dimensional orbit. The system contains equipment that allows analysts …

A Synthetic Environment Flight Simulator: The Afit Virtual Cockpit, John C. Switzer

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the design and implementation of a part of the Virtual Cockpit: a synthetic environment, distributed network flight simulator. The goal of the project was to prove the concept that this type of flight simulator could fill the gap between high-end, very expensive flight simulators and low-end game quality flight simulators. Discussed are: object-oriented design techniques, multi-processor utilization, the flight dynamics model, synthetic environment technology, the frame-rate vs. realism issue, and the interfaces to a realistic joystick and throttle.

Detection Of Spoofing, Jamming, Or Failure Of A Global Positioning System (Gps), Juan R. Vasquez Dec 1992

Detection Of Spoofing, Jamming, Or Failure Of A Global Positioning System (Gps), Juan R. Vasquez

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force has equipped its aircraft with avionic systems such as Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Guidance Systems (INS) capable of providing accurate navigation solutions. The aircrews flying these aircraft require a system that can either survive the hostile environments encountered in combat or notify the aircrew that their performance has been significantly degraded. This research focuses on failure detection and isolation techniques using an extended Kalman filter and generalized likelihood ratios using matched filters. Analysis is conducted using a Kalman filter development package known as the Multimode Simulation for Optimal Filter Evaluation (MSOFE). Both a large order …

A Computer Simulation Of The Rotary Vacuum Filter Brown Stock Washing System Using Distribution Sampling, Edison G. Yiu Dec 1992

A Computer Simulation Of The Rotary Vacuum Filter Brown Stock Washing System Using Distribution Sampling, Edison G. Yiu

Masters Theses

A probabilistic model was utilized to simulate the brown stock washing system's error due to process variability and measurement noise. Mass balances of the washing system were performed using distribution sampling. This model relies on a nonlinear relationship between displacement and dilution, which permitted the generation of displacement ratio based upon wash liquor ratio. Experimental trials were performed on a pilotscale rotary vacuum single-stage washer. Nonlinear first-order relationship appears to characterize a pilotscale washer adequately. Differences were observed between the means and standard deviations of the measured results compared to the simulation output. Future work is needed to identify the …

Optical Haar Wavelet Transforms Using Computer Generated Holography, Peter G. Block Dec 1992

Optical Haar Wavelet Transforms Using Computer Generated Holography, Peter G. Block

Theses and Dissertations

This research introduces an optical implementation of the continuous wavelet transform to filter images. The wavelet transform is modeled as a correlation process and is implemented with a Vander Lugt correlator. The orthonormal basis set used is composed of two one-dimensional Haar functions and a two-dimensional Haar function. Each wavelet, as well as its first two dyadic scalings, is implemented with computer generated holography. The Interferogram method, which represents a function only in terms of its phase, is used to encode the wavelet functions. The results are imaged onto a CCD array and captured using a framegrabber. The optical results …

Real Image Visual Display System, James R. Brandt Dec 1992

Real Image Visual Display System, James R. Brandt

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates a technique for improving the perception of three-dimensionality in images generated by a Silicon Graphics workstation. The technique involves using a spherical mirror into which the graphics from the CRT are projected. A real image of the graphic is formed by the mirror and it appears to be floating at the image plane. The three-dimensional effect is improved by adding reflections or shadows of the displayed object. Additionally, a method of using real objects with computer generated shadows and computer generated objects with real shadows is investigated. This is done in an effort to quantify how far …

Object Tracking Through Adaptive Correlation, Dennis A. Montera Dec 1992

Object Tracking Through Adaptive Correlation, Dennis A. Montera

Theses and Dissertations

This paper discusses the use of a correlation based system to track, an object through a series of images based on templates derived from previous image frames. The ability to track is extended to sequences which include multiple objects of interest within the field of view. This is accomplishes by comparing the height and shape of the template autocorrelation to the peaks in the correlation of the template with the next scene. The result is to identify the region in the next scene which best matches the designated target. In addition to correlation plane postprocessing, an adaptive window is used …

Cathodoluminescence Spectroscopy Of Zinc Germanium Phosphide Zngep2, Michael R. Gregg Dec 1992

Cathodoluminescence Spectroscopy Of Zinc Germanium Phosphide Zngep2, Michael R. Gregg

Theses and Dissertations

Zinc Germanium Phosphide (ZnGeP2) is a nonlinear semiconductor suitable for use as a laser tuning element over the two to six micron wavelength range. Although this crystal has been studied in the past, its luminescent properties are not yet well understood. In this present study, ZnGeP2 has been examined using cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (CL). Specifically, the spectral dependence of the CL was obtained as a function of electron beam energy, beam current and temperature. The resulting CL was found to be polarized with a peak structure that was dependent on the polarization. This peak structure observed by CL …

Data Reduction With Least Squares Differential Correction Using Equinoctial Elements, Michael S. Wasson Dec 1992

Data Reduction With Least Squares Differential Correction Using Equinoctial Elements, Michael S. Wasson

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates earth satellite orbit estimation on a track of range, azimuth, and elevation data from a single tracking station. The estimation routine is a least squares batch filter based solely on two-body orbital motion. Using equinoctial elements for the reference orbit avoids the numerical difficulties of the classical elements at eccentricities near zero and inclinations near zero or 90 degrees. Orbits for Mir, DMSP, Explorer, Cosmos, and GPS are investigated. The goal of this study is to reduce orbit information from observations (range, azimuth, and elevation) to an element set and a covariance matrix without considering perturbation effects. …

Generalization And Parallelization Of Messy Genetic Algorithms And Communication In Parallel Genetic Algorithms, Laurence D. Merkle Dec 1992

Generalization And Parallelization Of Messy Genetic Algorithms And Communication In Parallel Genetic Algorithms, Laurence D. Merkle

Theses and Dissertations

Genetic algorithms (GA) are highly parallelizable, robust semi- optimization algorithms of polynomial complexity. The most commonly implemented GAs are 'simple' GAs (SGAs). Reproduction, crossover, and mutation operate on solution populations. Deceptive and GA-hard problems are provably difficult for simple GAs. Messy GAs (MGA) are designed to overcome these limitations. The MGA is generalized to solve permutation type optimization problems. Its performance is compared to another MGA's, an SGA's, and a permutation SGA's. Against a fully deceptive problem the generalized MGA (GMGA) consistently performs better than the simple GA. Against an NP-complete permutation problem, the GMGA performs better than the other …

Solution To A Multicriteria Aircraft Routing Problem Utilizing Parallel Search Techniques, James J. Grimm Iii Dec 1992

Solution To A Multicriteria Aircraft Routing Problem Utilizing Parallel Search Techniques, James J. Grimm Iii

Theses and Dissertations

Pilots select routes based on factors such as threats, fuel, time on target, distance, and refueling points. This is a time consuming task. This thesis presents the software engineering synthesis of a software tool, based on a parallelized A* search algorithm, to select routes. For simplicity only threats and distance are used. A centralized open list is used with one processor managing the list while the other processors perform the node expansions. This decomposition result in a dynamically load balanced system. A number of parameters are changed to study their impact on the execution time. The use of a branch …

A Vhdl Interpreter For Model-Based Diagnoses, David R. Griffin Dec 1992

A Vhdl Interpreter For Model-Based Diagnoses, David R. Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

Model-based reasoning permits diagnostic applications to be written without waiting for someone to become an 'expert' of the system. For model-based diagnostics, there must be a model to reason from. This thesis explores using a VHDL description of the system as that model. A system based around a VHDL interpreter was written specifically for a model-based diagnostic algorithm. Currently, the diagnostic system uses an algorithm by Dries. This algorithm was derived from Scarl's Full Consistency Algorithm. The system was designed to be modular so that different diagnostic techniques could be implemented. It is divided into three parts: a VHDL parser, …

An Intelligent Real-Time System Architecture Implemented In Ada, Michael A. Whelan Dec 1992

An Intelligent Real-Time System Architecture Implemented In Ada, Michael A. Whelan

Theses and Dissertations

Conventional real-time systems are fully deterministic allowing for off-line, optimal, task scheduling under all circumstances. Real-time intelligent systems add non-deterministic task execution times and non- deterministic task sets for scheduling purposes. Non-deterministic task sets force intelligent real-time systems to trade-off execution time with solution quality during run-time and perform dynamic task scheduling. Four basic design considerations addressing those tradeoffs have been identified: control reasoning, focus of attention, parallelism, and algorithm efficacy. Non-real- time intelligent systems contain an environment sensor, a model of the environment, a reasoning process, and a large collection of procedural processes. Real-time intelligent systems add to these …

Creating And Manipulating Formalized Software Architectures To Support A Domain-Oriented Application Composition System, Cynthia G. Anderson Dec 1992

Creating And Manipulating Formalized Software Architectures To Support A Domain-Oriented Application Composition System, Cynthia G. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated technology which enables sophisticated users to specify, generate, and maintain application software in domain-oriented terms. To realize this new technology, a development environment, called Architect, was designed and implemented. Using canonical formal specifications of domain objects, Architect rapidly composes these specifications into a software application and executes a prototype of that application as a means to demonstrate its correctness before any programming language specific code is generated. Architect depends upon the existence of a formal object base (or domain model) which was investigated by another student in related research. The research described in this thesis relied on …

Version And Transaction Management In Osmagic: An Object-Oriented Database Implementation Of The Magic Vlsi Layout Design Tool, Gary M. Lightner

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis was to study the feasibility of using an object-oriented database management system to provide the functionality and performance needed to support a complex computer-aided design tool. We do this by modifying OSMagic, a prototype system of the Magic very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuit design tool implemented on the ObjectStore object- oriented database management system. OSMagic was changed to support three different interfaces to ObjectStore and to work in a networking environment. We then designed and examined the use of version and transaction management models as a means of addressing the weaknesses of the prototype …

Formalizing, Validating, And Verifying Real-Time System Requirements With Reacto And Vhdl, Frank C. Young

Theses and Dissertations

We develop a methodology for formalizing, verifying, and validating the requirements specification of real-time systems based on a graphical and formal hierarchical Finite State Machine (FSM) language Reacto. We define a means to quantify time and express real-time constraints in Reacto and a transformation from Reacto to the Very High Speed Integrated Circuit (VHSIC) hardware Description Language (VHDL). Reacto's high level abstractions, graphical nature, and theorem prover produce efficient, accurate, and easily understood specifications. We use VHDL's event driven simulation capability, concurrency, and temporal operators to thoroughly examine temporal dependencies between the state machine transitions, and to increase simulation power …

Theory And Implementation Of Wavelet Analyses In Rational Resolution Decompositions, Bruce P. Anderson Dec 1992

Theory And Implementation Of Wavelet Analyses In Rational Resolution Decompositions, Bruce P. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The multiresolution analysis (MRA) developed by Mallat and Meyer and further discussed by Daubechies is a useful tool in the analysis of sampled signals such as images and speech. This thesis develops the theory and implementation of a rational-resolution analysis (RRA) as an extension of the dyadic MRA for arbitrary rational dilation factors. We present a method to calculate families of compactly-supported scaling functions and wavelets based on arbitrary integer dilation factors and provide examples. The perfect- reconstruction properties of the RRA are discussed and it is demonstrated that the compactly-supported scaling functions and wavelets do not yield perfect- reconstruction. …

Etann Hardware Implementation For Radar Emitter Identification, James B. Calvin Jr. Dec 1992

Etann Hardware Implementation For Radar Emitter Identification, James B. Calvin Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated classification of 30 radar emitters with 16 signal features using Intel's 80170NX chip, the Electronically Trainable Analog Neural Network (ETANN). Software tools were developed to characterize the ETANN sigmoidal transfer function for use in a custom simulator, known as Neural Graphics. Neural Graphics operates on a Silicon Graphics workstation. The Intel Neural Network Training System simulators were used in early experiments, but were found to be inefficient in training on data used in this research. Using a modified Neural Graphics simulator, single chip and multi-chip experiments were performed to provide benchmark results prior to performing chip-in-loop training. …

Design And Characterization Of Optically Pumped Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers, Richard J. Bagnell Dec 1992

Design And Characterization Of Optically Pumped Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers, Richard J. Bagnell

Theses and Dissertations

Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are a form of semiconductor laser which have their cavity oriented orthogonally to the plane of the wafer. The orientation necessitates short cavities, highly reflective mirrors and a relatively high gain/loss ratio. Even so, the resultant superior exit beam characteristics and the tight packing density of the finished lasers provide strong motivation for pursuing the growth of these structures. This thesis details the design of an optically pumped InGaAs multiple quantum well periodic gain structure VCSEL with a 950 nm lasing wavelength. These growths were to be a first attempt at VCSEL construction, so …

Remote Sensing Of Turbulence And Transverse Atmospheric Wind Profiles Using Optical Reference Sources, Steven C. Koeffler Dec 1992

Remote Sensing Of Turbulence And Transverse Atmospheric Wind Profiles Using Optical Reference Sources, Steven C. Koeffler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines a remote sensing technique for measuring the atmospheric structure constant and the transverse atmospheric wind velocity as a function of altitude by performing temporal and spatial correlations of band pass filtered wave front slope sensor measurements. Two point sources are used to illuminate two pairs-of cc>-located wave front slope sensors. The sources and sensors are arranged to give rise to crossed optical paths. For each pair of wave front slope sensors, the output of the larger sensor is subtracted from the output of the smaller sensor. This band pass filters the smaller sensor's output. The filtered …

A Generic Template Extractor (Gentex) In C For Vlsi Design Verification, Kenneth J. Mcclellan Jr. Dec 1992

A Generic Template Extractor (Gentex) In C For Vlsi Design Verification, Kenneth J. Mcclellan Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of VLSI design verification through circuit extraction was analyzed. The problems of creating a simple template format, the permutability of pins, maintaining connectivity, and performance were focused on. A generic template extractor (GENTEX) was developed in the C programming language for use as a testbed to find solutions to these problems. Six different extraction algorithms were tested with GENTEX and compared based on performance. EDIF translation programs were used to interface with GENTEX on both the input and output sides. One translation program converted an EDIF representation of a schematic into the template format used by GENTEX. The …
