The Study Of The Growth Processes Of The Oxides On Lead Electrodes In Sulfuric Acid Solution, Hesheng Zhai, Xuguang Chen, Jinkua You, Yong Yang, Zugeng Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

The growth processes of PbO and PbO2 on lead electrodes have been investigatedby using in-situ methods that are combined with temporary AC resistance measurment technique and in-situ laser scanning photoelectrochemical microscopy. It is found that a linear relationship existsbetween the electrode resistance(R) and1/2 after the electrode is oxidized at +0.6 V(vs.Hg/H2SO4/35% H2SO4) for more than 5 min. This result suggests that the growth of PbO is well distributed during the early stage of oxidation. The study by using laser scanning photoelectrochemical microscopy has further proved this point. The results also …

The Electrode Process Of Y(Ⅲ) On Copper Electrode And Its Surface Metallizing, Chungen Zhou, Shuzhen Duan

Journal of Electrochemistry

The reduction of yttrium ion on copper electrode in NaCl-KCl-YCl3 molten saltshas been investigated. The results indicate that the formation of intermetallic compounds is occuredbefore the metallic yttrium to be formed. The formation of intermetallic compounds is controlled bythe process of which yttrium atoms are diffusing into copper electrode. The kinetic characters todiffusion of yttrium atoms were also discussed.

The Catalytic Behavior For Ni-W Electrode Modified By Carbon Ion Beam Implantion, Jishuang Zhang, Yaojiao Lv, Qinglian Li, Baoen Shen

Journal of Electrochemistry

The hydrogen evolution activity in acidic and basic mediums for Ni-W electrodemodified by carbon ion bean implantation was investigated. The experimental results show thiselectrode has superior catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction than that of the unmodified Ni-electrode. Long period testing of electrolysis under high current density show that this electrode hasalonger useful life hence it is a practical electrode material. The temperature effect of electrocatalytic property was also inverstigated. The experimental regularities are explained on the basis of the formation of surface multialloys of Ni-W-WC.

Scheduling Of Parallel Jobs On Dynamic, Heterogenous Networks, Dan Clark, Jeremy Casas, Steve Otto, Robert Prouty, Jonathan Walpole Jan 1995

Scheduling Of Parallel Jobs On Dynamic, Heterogenous Networks, Dan Clark, Jeremy Casas, Steve Otto, Robert Prouty, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In using a shared network of workstations for parallel processing, it is not only important to consider heterogeneity and differences in processing power between the workstations but also the dynamics of the system as a whole. In such a computing environment where the use of resources vary as other applications consume and release resources, intelligent scheduling of the parallel jobs onto the available resources is essential to maximize resource utilization. Despite this realization, however, there are few systems available that provide an infrastructure for the easy development and testing of these intelligent schedulers. In this paper, an infrastructure is presented …

Electrical Characterization Of The (La,Ca) (Cr,Co)O3 System, S. R. Sehlin, Harlan U. Anderson, Don M. Sparlin Jan 1995

Electrical Characterization Of The (La,Ca) (Cr,Co)O3 System, S. R. Sehlin, Harlan U. Anderson, Don M. Sparlin

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The results of electrical conductivity and thermopower measurements are presented for selected (La,Ca)(Cr,Co)O3 compositions. The La1 - xCaxCrO3 compounds are typical p-type small polaron conductors. The La1 - xCaxCrO3 compounds are found to be small polaron conductors at room temperature for x ≤ 0.20 with a higher electrical conductivity than the corresponding chromite's. The electrical conductivity at room temperature is lower for Co-rich compositions than for Cr-rich compositions for compositions containing 10 mol% and 20 mol% Ca. This fact is attributed to the trapping of p-type small polarons at energetically lower Cr sites, resulting in a broad room temperature conductivity …

Impact Of Erosion, Mass Wasting, And Sedimentation On Human Activities In The Río Grande Basin, Jujuy Province, Argentina, Waldo Chayle, William J. Wayne Jan 1995

Impact Of Erosion, Mass Wasting, And Sedimentation On Human Activities In The Río Grande Basin, Jujuy Province, Argentina, Waldo Chayle, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Nearly all dry mountainous regions are affected by severe erosion, floods, and debris flows during times of intense precipitation. The lithology, geologic structure, and climate in Jujuy Province, Argentina combine to place at serious risk the people who live along the Río Grande, the major river that drains the east side of the Cordillera Oriental and the west side of the Sierras Subandinas. Nearly all precipitation falls during summer (January–March) with little during the remainder of the year; most of the basin is semiarid to arid, although the southern end has a humid subtropical climate. Relief is great, as much …

Information Theoretic Mask Analysis Of Rainfall Time Series Data, Martin Zwick, Hui Shu, Roy Koch Jan 1995

Information Theoretic Mask Analysis Of Rainfall Time Series Data, Martin Zwick, Hui Shu, Roy Koch

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study explores an information-theoretic/log-linear approach to multivariate time series analysis. The method is applied to daily rainfall data(4 sites, 9 years), originally quantitative but here treated as dichotomous. The analysis ascertains which lagged variables are most predictive of future rainfall and how season can be optimally defined as an auxiliary predicting parameter. Call the rainfall variables at the four sites A...D, and collectively, Z, the lagged site variables at t-1, E,,,H, at t-2, I...L, etc. and the seasonal parameter, S. The best model, reducing the Shannon uncertainty, u(Z), by 22%. is HGFSJK Z, where the independent variables, H through …

Effectiveness Of Vegetative Filter Strips In Controlling Losses Of Surface-Applied Poultry Litter Constituents, Indrajeet Chaubey, Dwayne R. Edwards, Tommy C. Daniel, Philip A. Moore Jr., D. Jeff Nichols

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Vegetative filter strips (VFS) have been shown to have high potential for reducing nonpoint source pollution from cultivated agricultural source areas, but information from uncultivated source areas amended with poultry litter is limited. Simulated rainfall was used in analyzing effects of VFS length (0, 3.1, 6.1, 9.2, 15.2, and 21.4 m) on quality of runoff from fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) plots (1.5 x 24.4 m) amended with poultry litter (5 Mg/ha). The VFS reduced mass transport of ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ortho-phosphorus (PO4-P), total phosphorus (TP), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total suspended …

Atrazine And Alachlor Dissipation Rates From Field Experiments, Stephen R. Workman, Andrew D. Ward, Norman R. Fausey, Sue E. Nokes

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Chemical transport is being monitored in the root zone of three agricultural management systems at the Ohio Management Systems Evaluation Area (OMSEA). Atrazine and alachlor concentration data from soil cores taken to a depth of 0.9 m and partitioned into the increments of 0.0 to 0.15, 0.15 to 0.3, 0.45 to 0.6, and 0.75 to 0.9 m show the herbicides remained in the top 0.15 m of the profile during the 1991 and 1992 growing seasons. The slow movement of herbicides was partly due to below normal rainfall during the period. Since the herbicides have not been transported out of …

Electric Field Mapping System With Nanosecond Temporal Rosolution, F. E. Peterkin, R. Block, K. H. Schoenbach Jan 1995

Electric Field Mapping System With Nanosecond Temporal Rosolution, F. E. Peterkin, R. Block, K. H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

The electric field dependence of the absorption coefficient in semi‐insulating GaAs at the absorption edge was measured in a high‐voltage pulsed experiment. Pulse duration was kept below 50 ns in order to avoid thermal effects. A GaAs laser diode was used as a probe light source with wavelength varied from 902 to 911 nm. For fields up to 40 kV/cm the absorption coefficient increased from 3 to 17 cm−1 at 902 nm, with smaller absolute increases evident at the longer wavelengths. Calculation from theory was consistent with this behavior. The spatial variation of the electric field was also recorded …

Locally Weighted Polynomial Regression: Parameter Choice And Application To Forecasts Of The Great Salt Lake, Upmanu Lall, Young-Ii Moon, Ken Bosworth

Reports

Relationships between hydrologic variables are often nonlinear. Usually the functional form of such a relationship is not known a priori. A multivariate, nonparametric regression methodology is provided here for approximating the underlying regression function using locally veighted polynomials. Locally weighted polynomials consider the approximation of the target function through a Taylor series expansion of the function in the neighborhood of the point of estimate. Cross validatory procedures for the selection of the size of the neighborhood over which this approximation should take place, and for the order of the local polynomial to use are provided and shown for some simple …

Transient Data Sharing Among Mobile Programs, Jerome Plun, Gruia-Catalin Roman Jan 1995

Transient Data Sharing Among Mobile Programs, Jerome Plun, Gruia-Catalin Roman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Mobile computing represents a major point of departure from the traditional distributed computing paradigm. The potentially very large number of independent computing units, a decoupled computing style, frequent disconnections, continuous position changes, and the location-dependent nature of the behavior and communication patterns present designers with unprecedented challenges in the areas of modularity and dependability. This paper describes a modular approach to specifying and reasoning about of mobile computing. Its novelty rests with the notion of allowing transient (location-dependent) data sharing among programs which move in space. The notation is a direct extension of that used in UNITY and reasoning about …

Aras: Asynchronous Risc Architecture Simulator, Chia-Hsing Chien, Mark A. Franklin, Tienyo Pan, Prithvi Prabhu

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In this paper, an asynchronous pipeline instruction simulator, ARAS is presented. With this simulator, one can design selected instruction pipelines and check their performance. Performance measurements of the pipeline configuration are obtained by simulating the execution of benchmark programs on the machine architectures developed. Depending on the simulation results obtained by using ARAS, the pipeline configuration can be altered to improve its performance. Thus, one can explore the design space of aynchronous pipeline architectures.

Can Declared Strategy Voting Be An Effective Instrument For Group Decision-Making?, Lorrie Faith Cranor Jan 1995

Can Declared Strategy Voting Be An Effective Instrument For Group Decision-Making?, Lorrie Faith Cranor

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The goal of this research is to determine whether declared strategy voting can be an effective tool for group decision-making. Declared strategy voting is a novel group decision-making procedure in which preference is specified using voting strategies - first-order mathematical functions that specify a choice in terms of zero or more parameters. This research will focus on refining the declared strategy voting concept, developing an accessible implementation of declared strategy voting that can be used for mock elections, assessing the potential impacts of declared strategy voting, and evaluating the effectiveness of declared strategy voting for group decision-making. This proposal describes …

Hart's Critics On Defeasible Concepts And Ascriptivism, Ronald P. Loui Jan 1995

Hart's Critics On Defeasible Concepts And Ascriptivism, Ronald P. Loui

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Hart's "Ascription of Responsibility and Rights" is where we find perhaps the first clear pronouncement of defeasibility and the technical introduction of the term. The paper has been criticised, disavowed, and never quite fully redeemed. Its lurid history is now being used as an excuse for dismissing the importance of defeasibility. Quite to the contrary, Hart's introduction of defeasibility has uniformly been regarded as the most agreeable part of the paper. The critics' wish that defeasibility could be better expounded along the lines of a Wittgensteinian game-theoretic semantics has largely been fulfilled. Even the most contentious part of the paper, …

A General Matrix Iterative Model For Dynamic Load Balancing, Mark A. Franklin, Vasudha Govindan Jan 1995

A General Matrix Iterative Model For Dynamic Load Balancing, Mark A. Franklin, Vasudha Govindan

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Effective load balancing algorithms are crucial in fully realizing the performance potential of parallel computer systems. This paper proposes a general matrix iterative model to represent a range of dynamic load balancing algorithms. The model and associated performance measures are used to evaluate and compare vairous load balancing algorithms and derive optimal algorithms and associated parameters for a given application and multiprocessor system. The model is parameterized to represent three load balancing algorithms - the random strategy, diffusion and complete redistribution algorithms. The model is validated by comparing the results with measured performance on a realistic workload. The parallel N-body …

Maintaining High Throughput During Overload In Atm Switches, Jonathan S. Turner Jan 1995

Maintaining High Throughput During Overload In Atm Switches, Jonathan S. Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This report analyzes two popular heuristics for ensuring packet integrity in ATM switching systems. In particular, we analyze the behavior of packet tail discarding, in order to understand how the packet level link efficiency is dependent on the rates of individual virtual circuits and the degre of the imposed overload. In addition, we study early packet discard and show that the queue capacity needed to achieve high efficiency under worst-case conditions grows with the number of virtual circuits and we determine the efficiency obtainable with more limited queue capacities. Using the insights from these analyses, extensions to early packet discard …

A Survey Of Network Signaling, Dakang Wu Jan 1995

A Survey Of Network Signaling, Dakang Wu

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Abstract Network signaling is the process of transferring control information among components of a communication network to establish, maintain, and release connections, and to pass the network management information. The rapid evolution in the field of telecommunications has led to the rapid evolution of network signaling. In this paper, we review the evolution of network signaling. We emphasize the concepts and protocols used in modern fast packet switching networks especially in emerging ATM networks.

An Efficient Signaling Structure For Atm Networks, Dakang Wu Jan 1995

An Efficient Signaling Structure For Atm Networks, Dakang Wu

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

As ATM becomes widely accepted as the communication standard for high speed networks, the signaling system structure and protocols that support ATM become more and more important. To support existing, future and unknown applications, the signalign system has to be very flexible and efficient. In this paper we define the signaling problem, present several possible signaling system structures, compare the advantages and disadvantages of these systems, and then we propose a new signaling system structure. The fundamental idea of the new signaling system is the logical separation of the signaling system structure from the underlying communication network, even though they …

Pac Learing Of One-Dimensional Patterns, Paul W. Goldberg, Sally A. Goldman, Stephen D. Scott

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Developing the ability to recognize a landmark from a visual image of a robot's current location is a fundamental problem in robotics. We consider the problem of PAC-learning the concept class of geometric patterns where the target geometric pattern is a configuration of k points on the real line. Each instance is a configuration of n points on the real line, where it is labeled according to whether or not it visually resembles the target pattern. To capture the notion of visual resemblance we use the Hausdorff metric. Informally, two geometric patterns P and Q resemble each othe runder the …
