Preparation Of Poly (Bromophenol Blue) Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode And Its Electrocatalytic Activity, Wei Chen, Hong-Bin Luo, Xin-Hua Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

A film of poly (bromophenol blue) was formed on a glassy carbon electrode by using cyclic voltammetry. A stable film could be obtained with a potential range from -1.0 V to +1.8 V (vs.Ag/AgCl). The experimental results showed that the poly (bromophenol blue) modified glassy carbon electrode could catalyse the oxidation of ascorbic acid. It decreased the oxidation potential by about 270mV but increased the peak current. Meanwhile, this electrode showed a good linear current response for the ascorbic acid range from 2.5 to 250 (g/mL).

Influence Of Rare Earth Oxide On The Performance Of Secondary Zinc Electrodes, Xian-Ling Meng, Hua-Bin Yang, Jun-Hong Wang, Zuo-Xiang Zhou

Journal of Electrochemistry

Influence of La(OH)3 or Ce(OH)3 in secondary zinc electrode was investigated by the cyclic voltammetry, potentiodynamic polarizationand potentiostatic polarization tests and influence of La2O3 or CeO2 in the charge/discharge performance of Zn/Ni battery was studied by galvanostatic charge/discharge experiment. The results showed that the film of rare earth hydroxide prevented the zincate species from transferring toward solution, enhanced hydrogen overpotential and decreased thecorrosion current density (icorr), and therefore inhibited zinc corrosion. The potentiostatic polarization results at100mV overpotential showed that La(OH)3 or Ce(OH)3 oated on the zinc electrode effectively suppressed the …

Reinforcement Learning-Based Output Feedback Control Of Nonlinear Systems With Input Constraints, Pingan He, Jagannathan Sarangapani Feb 2005

Reinforcement Learning-Based Output Feedback Control Of Nonlinear Systems With Input Constraints, Pingan He, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel neural network (NN) -based output feedback controller with magnitude constraints is designed to deliver a desired tracking performance for a class of multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) discrete-time strict feedback nonlinear systems. Reinforcement learning in discrete time is proposed for the output feedback controller, which uses three NN: 1) a NN observer to estimate the system states with the input-output data; 2) a critic NN to approximate certain strategic utility function; and 3) an action NN to minimize both the strategic utility function and the unknown dynamics estimation errors. The magnitude constraints are manifested as saturation nonlinearities in the output feedback …

Smartacking: Improving Tcp Performance From The Receiving End, Daniel K. Blandford, Sally A. Goldman, Sergey Gorinsky, Yan Zhou, Daniel R. Dooly Jan 2005

Smartacking: Improving Tcp Performance From The Receiving End, Daniel K. Blandford, Sally A. Goldman, Sergey Gorinsky, Yan Zhou, Daniel R. Dooly

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We present smartacking, a technique that improves performance of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) via adaptive generation of acknowledgments (ACKs) at the receiver. When the bottleneck link is underutilized, the receiver transmits an ACK for each delivered data segment and thereby allows the connection to acquire the available capacity promptly. When the bottleneck link is at its capacity, the smartacking receiver sends ACKs with a lower frequency reducing the control traffic overhead and slowing down the congestion window growth to utilize the network capacity more effectively. To promote quick deployment of the technique, our primary implementation of smartacking modifies only the …

Advantageous Goes Ir Results For Ash Mapping At High Latitudes: Cleveland Eruptions 2001, Yingxin Gu, William I. Rose, David J. Schneider, Gregg J. S. Bluth, M. I. Watson

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

The February 2001 eruption of Cleveland Volcano, Alaska allowed for comparisons of volcanic ash detection using two-band thermal infrared (10–12 μm) remote sensing from MODIS, AVHRR, and GOES 10. Results show that high latitude GOES volcanic cloud sensing the range of about 50 to 65°N is significantly enhanced. For the Cleveland volcanic clouds the MODIS and AVHRR data have zenith angles 6–65 degrees and the GOES has zenith angles that are around 70 degrees. The enhancements are explained by distortion in the satellite view of the cloud's lateral extent because the satellite zenith angles result in a “side-looking” aspect and …

Creep Of Granular Ice With And Without Dispersed Particles, Min Song, David M. Cole, Ian Baker Jan 2005

Creep Of Granular Ice With And Without Dispersed Particles, Min Song, David M. Cole, Ian Baker

Dartmouth Scholarship

The effects of silt-sized particles (average diameter of 50 m m) on the compressive creep of polycrystalline ice have been studied at stress levels from 0.1 to 1.45MPa and temperatures of –12 8 C and –10 8 C. Dislocation densities during creep have been estimated using a dislocation-based model of anelasticity. The results indicate that at low concentrations (up to 4wt.% % ), particles increase the minimum creep rate. Power-law behavior with an exponent of 3 was observed for both particle-free ice and ice with 1 wt.% % particles when the stress was >0.3 MPa. In contrast, linear behavior was …

Effect Of Silicon Content On The Corrosion Resistance And Radiation-Induced Embrittlement Of Materials For Advanced Heavy Liquid Metal Nuclear Systems: Quarterly Progress Report (August 2004 – October 2004), Ajit K. Roy

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this collaborative research project involving the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Idaho State University (ISU) is to evaluate the effect of silicon (Si) content on the corrosion behavior and radiation-induced embrittlement of martensitic stainless steels having chemical compositions similar to that of the modified 9Cr-1Mo steel. Recent studies at LANL involving Alloy EP-823 of different Si content have demonstrated that increased Si content in this alloy may enhance the corrosion resistance in molten lead-bismutheutectic (LBE). Since very little data exists in the open literature on the beneficial effect of Si …

We study a multi-server queueing model in which the arrivals occur according to a Markovian arrival process. An arriving customer either (a) is lost due to all main servers being busy; or (b) enters into service with one of the main servers and leaves the system (as a satisfied primary customer); (c) enters into a service with one of the main servers, gets service in self-service mode, and is impatient to get a final service with one of the main servers, may leave the system (as a dissatisfied secondary customer); or (d) enters into service with one of the main …

Quantifying Savings From Improved Boiler Operation, Kevin Carpenter, J. Kelly Kissock Jan 2005

Quantifying Savings From Improved Boiler Operation, Kevin Carpenter, J. Kelly Kissock

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

On/off operation and excess combustion air reduce boiler energy efficiency. This paper presents methods to quantify energy savings from switching to modulation control mode and reducing excess air in natural gas fired boilers.

The methods include calculation of combustion temperature, calculation of the relationship between internal convection coefficient and gas flow rate, and calculation of overall heat transfer assuming a parallel-flow heat exchanger model. The method for estimating savings from changing from on/off to modulation control accounts for purge and drift losses through the boiler and the improved heat transfer within the boiler due to the reduced combustion gas flow …

In the past few years, the W3C has been establishing standards for the fundamental building blocks of the Semantic Web. With RDF a common data model has been provided. A major step was the introduction of the ontology definition languages RDFS—offering very basic semantics—and the Web Ontology Language OWL As these standards are still very new, only a limited support of tools for inferencing and querying exists. Still, the availability of such tools will be crucial for the development of the Semantic Web.

Literature Survey Of Wind Turbine Aeroelastic Stability, Scott M. Larwood Jan 2005

Literature Survey Of Wind Turbine Aeroelastic Stability, Scott M. Larwood

All Faculty Reports - School of Engineering and Computer Science

A literature survey of wind turbine aeroelastic stability is presented. The subject received early interest as the emergent wind industry looked to lessons from the helicopter industry. There has not been a utility-scale turbine with flutter problems, but there is a concern over the behavior of larger, more flexible turbines. Blades of innovative design with bend-twist coupling and tip sweep are also a concern. Much of the aerodynamic modeling was formulated in the 1930s by Theodorsen. Modern authors have developed finite element structural models for eigenvalue solutions to the stability models. Calculations for a 1.5 MW turbine blade with bend-twist …
