Endoplanar: Deformable Planar-Based Gaussian Splatting For Surgical Scene Reconstruction, Thatphum Paonim Jan 2025

Endoplanar: Deformable Planar-Based Gaussian Splatting For Surgical Scene Reconstruction, Thatphum Paonim

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Precise modeling of deformable anatomical structures from stereoscopic endoscopic footage plays a critical role in advancing surgical guidance and robotic automation within image-assisted medical procedures. Recent advances in Gaussian splatting have demonstrated real-time visualization capabilities with notable quality on endoscopic data; however, traditional 3D Gaussian representations introduce volumetric artifacts that compromise geometric fidelity and depth accuracy. We address these challenges through EndoPlanar, a deformable planar Gaussian framework that projects volumetric primitives onto planar surfaces. This planar formulation facilitates bias-free depth calculation and normal vector derivation—capabilities that remain elusive with standard ellipsoidal representations. We further incorporate a regularization mechanism to ensure …

Advancing Voice Spoofing Detection In Thai : A Comprehensive Dataset And Performance Analysis On Speaking Styles And Channel Effects, Ticho Urai Jan 2025

Advancing Voice Spoofing Detection In Thai : A Comprehensive Dataset And Performance Analysis On Speaking Styles And Channel Effects, Ticho Urai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Voice authentication is increasingly used in applications such as banking and call center verification, but it faces serious risks from spoofed voices. Recent advances in text-to-speech (TTS) and voice cloning make it possible to generate highly natural fake speech, creating an urgent need for robust anti-spoofing systems. While most prior work focuses on English, little research addresses the Thai language. To fill this gap, we present the Chula Spoofed Speech (CSS) dataset, a large-scale Thai corpus containing 1.3M utterances of both bona fide and synthetic speech. The synthetic samples are generated using five state-of-the-art TTS systems from the same utterances …

Optimal Control Of Queueing Systems With Error-Prone Servers, Junqi Hu, Sigrún Andradóttir, Hayriye Ayhan Jan 2025

Optimal Control Of Queueing Systems With Error-Prone Servers, Junqi Hu, Sigrún Andradóttir, Hayriye Ayhan

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

Consider a Markovian tandem line with finite intermediate buffers and an equal number of stations and servers. Servers are flexible but noncollaborative, so that a job can be processed by at most one server at any time. When a job is being processed, it can be damaged and wasted depending on the proficiency of the server. We identify the dynamic server assignment policy that maximizes the long-run average throughput of the system with two stations and two servers. We find that the optimal policy is either a single or a double threshold policy on the number of jobs in the …

Development Of An Ecg-Based Deep Learning Model For Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease (Chd) Diagnosis, Annbar Mekouar Jan 2025

Development Of An Ecg-Based Deep Learning Model For Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease (Chd) Diagnosis, Annbar Mekouar

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Congenital heart disease (CHD) stands as the leading congenital anomaly which affects pediatric populations throughout the world. The effectiveness of treatment depends on both early diagnosis and accurate identification but echocardiography requires manual interpretation which proves time-consuming and inconsistent especially when examining pediatric patients with their distinct cardiac systems. The research aims to create a deep learning-based diagnostic framework which uses ECG data to identify coronary artery disease subtypes in pediatric patients. The model uses high-quality datasets from Dr. Ignacio Lugones to extract R-R intervals and QRS durations through convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The system addresses pediatric-specific challenges while enhancing …

An Analytical Model Of Motion Artifacts In A Measured Arterial Pulse Signal—Part I: Accelerometers And Ppg Sensors, Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Subodh Toraskar, Mamun Hasan, Zhili Hao Jan 2025

An Analytical Model Of Motion Artifacts In A Measured Arterial Pulse Signal—Part I: Accelerometers And Ppg Sensors, Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Subodh Toraskar, Mamun Hasan, Zhili Hao

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper, the first of two parts, presents an analytical model of motion artifacts (MAs) in measured pulse signals by accelerometers and photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors. As the transmission path from the true pulse signal in an artery to the sensor output (measured pulse signal), the tissue-contact-sensor (TCS) stack is modeled as a 1DOF (degree-of-freedom) system. MAs cause baseline drift of the mass and simultaneously time-varying system parameters (TVSPs) of the TCS stack. With arterial wall displacement and pulsatile pressure serving separately as the true pulse signal, an analytical model is developed to mathematically relate baseline drift and TVSP to a …

Optimal Control And Structurally-Informed Gradient Optimization Of A Custom 4-Dof Rigid-Body, Brock Marcinczyk, Logan E. Beaver Jan 2025

Optimal Control And Structurally-Informed Gradient Optimization Of A Custom 4-Dof Rigid-Body, Brock Marcinczyk, Logan E. Beaver

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

This work develops a control-centric framework for a custom 4-DOF rigid-body manipulator by coupling a reduced-order Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle (PMP) controller with a physics-informed Gradient Descent stage. The reduced PMP model provides a closed-form optimal control law for the joint accelerations, while the Gradient Descent module determines the corresponding time horizons by minimizing a cost functional built directly from the full Rigid-Body Dynamics. Structural-mechanics reaction analysis is used only to initialize feasible joint velocities—most critically the azimuthal component—ensuring that the optimizer begins in a physically admissible region. The resulting kinematic trajectories and dynamically consistent time horizons are then supplied to …

Outgassing Measurements Of Bare And Magnetite-Coated Low-Carbon Steel Vacuum Chambers, Aiman H. Al-Allaq, Md Abdullah Mamun, Matt Poelker, Abdelmageed Elmustafa

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The outgassing properties of bare and magnetite-coated AISI 1020 low-carbon steel vacuum chambers were evaluated to establish material selection criteria for extreme high vacuum applications, namely, to explore the possibility of using these materials to build next-generation spin-polarized photoelectron guns. Water outgassing measurements using the throughput method revealed that the magnetite-coated chamber exhibited five times lower outgassing at room temperature prior to baking, but this advantage disappears after 80 °C baking. Hydrogen outgassing measurements demonstrated significant differences after intensive heat treatment: the bare low-carbon steel vacuum chamber achieved a specific outgassing rate of 9.6 × 10−16 Torr L s …

From Cyclones To Cybersecurity: A Call For Convergence In Risk And Crisis Communications Research, Ann Marie Reinhold, Ross J. Gore, Barry Ezell, Clemente I. Izurieta, Elizabeth A. Shanahan Jan 2025

From Cyclones To Cybersecurity: A Call For Convergence In Risk And Crisis Communications Research, Ann Marie Reinhold, Ross J. Gore, Barry Ezell, Clemente I. Izurieta, Elizabeth A. Shanahan

VMASC Publications

Effective risk and crisis communication can improve health and safety and reduce harmful effects of hazards and disasters. A robust body of literature investigates mechanisms for improving risk and crisis communication. While effective risk and crisis communication strategies are equally desired across different hazard types (e.g., natural hazards, cyber security), the extent to which risk and crisis communication experts utilize the “lessons learned” from scientific domains outside their own is suspect. Therefore, we hypothesized that risk and crisis communication research is siloed according to academic disciplines at the detriment to the advancement of the field of risk communications research writ …

Applying Transfer Learning For Street-Scale Nuisance Flood Forecasting In Coastal-Urban Cities, Binata Roy, Jonathan L. Goodall, Diana Mcspadden, Chetan Kumar, Steven Goldenberg, Yidi Wang, Malachi Schram

VMASC Publications

An important challenge with Machine Learning (ML) is its transferability; i.e., whether a ML model trained on one set of data can be applied to a second set of data without requiring full re-training of the model. Transfer Learning (TL) addresses this challenge by transferring knowledge learned in the source domain (the data it was trained on) to the target domain (a second set of data that is statistically different but related, which the model was not trained on). This study investigates the use of TL for street-scale nuisance flood forecasting by exploring whether a ML model trained for one …

Age Of Information-Based Optimal Scheduling With Energy Cost Trade-Off For Smart Warehouse: A Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Approach, Sandip Roy, Abhishek Bisht, Ashok Kumar Das, Sachin Shetty

VMASC Publications

Recent advances in the integration of high-speed mobile networks and real-time IoT devices have facilitated in building of smart warehouses, where a set of beacons and Internet of Things (IoT) devices (or source nodes) can monitor the status of various physical processes in a time-critical way. In real-time status monitoring systems, like smart warehouses, quantifying the freshness of the Internet of Things (IoT) data based on the age of information (AoI) metrics becomes quite crucial. As source nodes are battery-constrained, a balanced trade-off between AoI minimization and preservation of source node battery energy is essential. In this paper, in a …

Faithful Narratives From Complex Conceptual Models: Should Modelers Or Large Language Models Simplify Causal Maps, Tyler J. Gandee, Philippe J. Giabbanelli Jan 2025

Faithful Narratives From Complex Conceptual Models: Should Modelers Or Large Language Models Simplify Causal Maps, Tyler J. Gandee, Philippe J. Giabbanelli

VMASC Publications

(1) Background: Comprehensive conceptual models can result in complex artifacts, consisting of many concepts that interact through multiple mechanisms. This complexity can be acceptable and even expected when generating rich models, for instance to support ensuing analyses that find central concepts or decompose models into parts that can be managed by different actors. However, complexity can become a barrier when the conceptual model is used directly by individuals. A ‘transparent’ model can support learning among stakeholders (e.g., in group model building) and it can motivate the adoption of specific interventions (i.e., using a model as evidence base). Although advances in …

Physics-Informed Deep Learning With Kalman Filter Mixture For Traffic State Prediction, Niharika Deshpande, Hyoshin (John) Park

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Accurate traffic forecasting is crucial for understanding and managing congestion for efficient transportation planning. However, conventional approaches often neglect epistemic uncertainty, which arises from incomplete knowledge across different spatiotemporal scales. This study addresses this challenge by introducing a novel methodology to establish dynamic spatiotemporal correlations that captures the unobserved heterogeneity in travel time through distinct peaks in probability density functions, guided by physics-based principles. We propose an innovative approach to modifying both prediction and correction steps of the Kalman Filter (KF) algorithm by leveraging established spatiotemporal correlations. Central to our approach is the development of a novel deep learning model …

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The quality of input data is critical to the performance of time-series classification models, particularly in the domain for industrial sensor data where noise and anomalies are frequent. This study investigates how various filtering-based preprocessing techniques impact the accuracy and robustness of a Transformer model that predicts power efficiency states (Normal, Caution, Warning) from minute-level IIoT sensor data. We evaluated five techniques: a baseline, Simple Moving Average, Median filter, Hampel filter, and Kalman filter. For each technique, we conducted systematic experiments across time windows (360 and 720 min) that reflect real-world industrial inspection cycles, along with five prediction offsets (up …

A Comparison Of Microcrystal Electron Diffraction And X-Ray Powder Diffraction For The Structural Analysis Of Metal-Organic Frameworks, Erik Biehler, Silvana Pagola, Daniel Stam, Johannes Merkelbach, Christian Jandl, Tarek M. Abdel-Fattah

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

This study successfully implemented microcrystal electron diffraction (microED) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) for the crystal structure determination of a new phase, TAF-CNU-1, Ni(C₈H₄O₄)·3H₂O, solved by microED from single microcrystals in the powder and refined at the kinematic and dynamic electron diffraction theory levels. This nickel metal–organic framework (MOF), together with its cobalt and manganese analogues with formula M (C₈H₄O₄)·2H₂O with M = Mn II or CoII, were synthesized in aqueous media as one-pot preparations from the corresponding hydrated metal chlorides and sodium terephthalate, as a promising `green' synthetic route to moisture-stable MOFs. The crystal structures of the …

Metathesis Or Isomerization: Counteranion Directed Reactivity Of Grubbs I, Paul D. Miller, Joe B. Calkins, Craig A. Bayse, Trandon A. Bender

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Catalytic isomerization of alkenes has garnered interest for many years, but there are remaining challenges when it comes to thermodynamic selectivity and uncontrolled isomerization. Nonbiased substrates, be it sterically or thermodynamically, remain challenging for many catalysts, with a few examples available in the more modern literature. Herein, we present the controlled isomerization of linear alkenes with a cocatalytic mixture of commercially available catalyst and reagents: Grubbs I, tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane, and triethylsilane. DFT calculations indicate that an observed alkylidyne hydride intermediate is in rapid equilibrium with an alkylidene that binds the alkene substrate. This combination results in a pi-acidic metal and a …

Stack Bonding In Pentacene And Its Derivatives, Craig A. Bayse

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Understanding the nature of π-stacking interactions is important to molecular recognition, self-assembly, and organic semiconductors. The stack bonding order (SBO) model of π-stacking has shown that the conformations of dimers occur when the combinations of monomer MOs are overall stack bonding in character. DFT calculations show that minima found on the potential energy surface for the π-stacked dimers of pentacene and perfluoropentacene occur when the dimer MOs are constructed from combinations of monomer MOs with an allowed SBO. An ex-amination of the MOs of π-stacked dimers extracted from X-ray structures of alkynyl derivatives like TIPS-pentacene pack at one or more …

Methods: The latest transmembrane-electrostatically localized protons/cations charges (TELC) theory is employed for numerical analysis to calculate the neural touch signal transduction responding time required to fire an action potential spike.

Results: A neural action potential spike was constructed successfully using newly developed time-dependent TELC-based neural transmembrane potential integral equations (Equations 5, 6, and 7). The results explicated that the TELC curve has an inverse relationship with neural transmembrane potential since its curve appears …

Organic electronics, featuring π-conjugated small molecules and polymers, have gained significant attention for their potential in flexible, lightweight devices. However, characterization of the ordered, π-stacking domains within these materials using microscopy or X-ray diffraction (XRD) is challenging with complex systems or when crystallography is impractical. This study applied 1D ¹³C multiple cross-polarization magic angle spinning (multiCP/MAS) and 2D ¹H-¹³C heteronuclear correlation (HetCor) solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) to systematically characterize π-stacking motifs in a series of N,N'-dialkyl naphthalene diimides (NDIs). These techniques were shown to distinguish between the electronic environments attributed to different π-stacking motifs adopted in these NDIs, such …

Nature in cities is essential for human well-being. Quantifying and valuing the goods and services provided by nature to city dwellers is missing in tropical contexts. Yet, as cities worldwide face similar challenges, understanding the services provided by tropical urban ecosystems becomes imperative for effective management. Here, we present the first Natural Capital Assessment of a tropical city, unveiling three critical insights. Firstly, we demonstrate the vital reliance of a developed tropical city on nature, particularly for climate change mitigation through regulating services. Secondly, we identify intact natural areas as Singapore’s most valuable assets, stressing the significance of the quality …

Access to healthcare remains a critical challenge for rural populations, particularly in flood-prone coastal communities where transportation barriers limit access to essential medical services. This study evaluates the effectiveness of drone-based medication delivery in improving healthcare accessibility for vulnerable populations on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Compared to traditional personal vehicle travel, drone delivery reduced trip times from up to 50 minutes to under 10 minutes for more than 80% of the population, including elderly patients. Using publicly available datasets, we developed two transportation vulnerability indices that incorporate age, travel time, and flood risk to prioritize patients for drone-based pharmaceutical delivery. These …
