Morphological, Structural, And Optical Studies Of Undoped And Doped-Zno Nanostructure., Ramin Yousefi

Student Works (2010-2019)

Research concerning one-dimensional nanomaterials has grown tremendously ever since carbon nanotubes were discovered by Iijima (1991), silicon nanowires were grown by Lieber's group (1998), and ZnO nanowires and nanobelts were found by Wang's group from Georgia Tech (Pan et al., 2001). Such researches on one-dimensional structures have been one of the most important branches of science during recent decades. We can now observe the impact of these studies on the technology of one-dimensional materials and also the advanced prospect of developing new technologies. Based on this motivation, this thesis attempts to investigate some unknown properties of ZnO nanostructures as …

Architectural Support For Improving Computer Security, Jingfei Kong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Computer security and privacy are becoming extremely important nowadays. The task of protecting computer systems from malicious attacks and potential subsequent catastrophic losses is, however, challenged by the ever increasing complexity and size of modern hardware and software design. We propose several methods to improve computer security and privacy from architectural point of view. They provide strong protection as well as performance efficiency. In our first approach, we propose a new dynamic information flow method to protect systems from popular software attacks such as buffer overflow and format string attacks. In our second approach, we propose to deploy encryption schemes …

Real-Time Cinematic Design Of Visual Aspects In Computer-Generated Images, Juraj Obert Jan 2010

Real-Time Cinematic Design Of Visual Aspects In Computer-Generated Images, Juraj Obert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Creation of visually-pleasing images has always been one of the main goals of computer graphics. Two important components are necessary to achieve this goal --- artists who design visual aspects of an image (such as materials or lighting) and sophisticated algorithms that render the image. Traditionally, rendering has been of greater interest to researchers, while the design part has always been deemed as secondary. This has led to many inefficiencies, as artists, in order to create a stunning image, are often forced to resort to the traditional, creativity-baring, pipelines consisting of repeated rendering and parameter tweaking. Our work shifts the …

A New Framework For Qos Provisioning In Wireless Lans Using The P-Persistent Mac Protocol, Kiran Babu Anna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The support of multimedia traffic over IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs) has recently received considerable attention. This dissertation has proposed a new framework that provides efficient channel access, service differentiation and statistical QoS guarantees in the enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) protocol of IEEE 802.11e. In the first part of the dissertation, the new framework to provide QoS support in IEEE 802.11e is presented. The framework uses three independent components, namely, a core MAC layer, a scheduler, and an admission control. The core MAC layer concentrates on the channel access mechanism to improve the overall system efficiency. The …

Spatio-Temporal Maximum Average Correlation Height Templates In Action Recognition And Video Summarization, Mikel Rodriguez Jan 2010

Spatio-Temporal Maximum Average Correlation Height Templates In Action Recognition And Video Summarization, Mikel Rodriguez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Action recognition represents one of the most difficult problems in computer vision given that it embodies the combination of several uncertain attributes, such as the subtle variability associated with individual human behavior and the challenges that come with viewpoint variations, scale changes and different temporal extents. Nevertheless, action recognition solutions are critical in a great number of domains, such video surveillance, assisted living environments, video search, interfaces, and virtual reality. In this dissertation, we investigate template-based action recognition algorithms that can incorporate the information contained in a set of training examples, and we explore how these algorithms perform in action …

Interplay Between The Lattice And Spin Degrees Of Freedom In (Sr1−Xcax)3ru2o7, Jin Peng, David Fobes, Tijian Liu, Xiaoshan Wu, H M. Pham, Leonard Spinu, Z Q. Mao Jan 2010

Interplay Between The Lattice And Spin Degrees Of Freedom In (Sr1−Xcax)3ru2o7, Jin Peng, David Fobes, Tijian Liu, Xiaoshan Wu, H M. Pham, Leonard Spinu, Z Q. Mao

Physics Faculty Publications

The Sr1−xCax3Ru2O7 solid solution series exhibits complex magnetic ground states, ranging from an itinerant metamagnetic state, to a quasi-two-dimensional 2D heavy-mass nearly ferromagneticFM state, and finally to a long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state Z. Qu et al. Phys. Rev. B. 78, R180407 2008. In this paper, we investigate the evolution of structural distortion and magnetic anisotropy with Ca content in this material system. Our results show that both the magnetic phase transitions and magnetic anistropy of this system couple with the evolution of structure distortion. The transformation from the itinerant metamagnetic to the nearly ferromagnetic state is accompanied …

Programmable Design And Implementation Of A Chaotic System Utilizing Multiple Nonlinear Functions, Recai̇ Kiliç, Fatma Yildirim Dalkiran Jan 2010

Programmable Design And Implementation Of A Chaotic System Utilizing Multiple Nonlinear Functions, Recai̇ Kiliç, Fatma Yildirim Dalkiran

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In addition to exhibiting a rich variety of bifurcation and chaos via tuning parameters, a chaotic system introduced by Sprott can be modeled and realized with a fixed main system block and many different changeable nonlinear function blocks such as piecewise-linear function, cubic function and other trigonometric functions. This system is very suitable for implementing a programmable chaos generator according to its changeable nonlinearity. This paper presents a FPAA (Field Programmable Analog Array)-based programmable implementation of this system. Nonlinear function blocks used in this chaotic system are modeled with FPAA programming and a model is rapidly changed for realizing other …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A [Ru(Bpy)2(Ncs)2] Derivative For Use As A Dye-Sensitizer In Nanocrystalline Solar Cells, Joel Thomas Kirner Jan 2010

Synthesis And Characterization Of A [Ru(Bpy)2(Ncs)2] Derivative For Use As A Dye-Sensitizer In Nanocrystalline Solar Cells, Joel Thomas Kirner

Honors Program Theses

After extensive review of the field of dye-sensitized solar cells, the molecule [Ru(4,4’- dicarboxy-2,2’-bipyridine)(4,4’-di-(2-(2-pyridyl)ethenyl)-2,2’-bipyridine)(NCS)2] has been designed as an original contribution to the field. This dye sensitizer was chosen by derivatizing upon the structure of the standard sensitizer, cis-diisothiocyanatobis(4,4’-dicarboxylic acid-2,2’- bipyridine)ruthenium(II) (N3), by extending the conjugation of one bipyridine ligand. This structural derivatization should enhance light harvesting by red-shifting the dye’s absorbance and increasing the dye’s molar absorptivity, which should result in a dye-sensitized solar cell with higher efficiency. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) molecular orbital calculations of the new dye complex indicate that the HOMO is highly localized …

Destruction Of Α -Synuclein Based Amyloid Fibrils By A Low Temperature Plasma Jet, Erdinc Karakas, Agatha Munyanyi, Lesley Greene, Mounir Laroussi Jan 2010

Destruction Of Α -Synuclein Based Amyloid Fibrils By A Low Temperature Plasma Jet, Erdinc Karakas, Agatha Munyanyi, Lesley Greene, Mounir Laroussi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Amyloid fibrils are ordered beta-sheet aggregates that are associated with a number of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer and Parkinson. At present, there is no cure for these progressive and debilitating diseases. Here we report initial studies that indicate that low temperature atmospheric pressure plasma can break amyloid fibrils into smaller units in vitro. The plasma was generated by the plasma pencil, a device capable of emitting a long, low temperature plasma plume/jet. This avenue of research may facilitate the development of a plasma-based medical treatment.
