The Vertebrate Integrative Physiology (VIP) lab monitors the population of northern elephant seals at the largest mainland breeding colony, located at Piedras Blancas (San Simeon, CA). As the population expands, more human-seal interactions and conflicts over land use occur. The VIP lab's work informs California State Parks and helps with the management of the rookery. Currently, members of the VIP lab fly a drone over the beaches, capture multiple images, and manually count the seals, which takes around 14 to 21 hours of analysis per survey. In this research, we advance the domain of public safety by developing a machine learning model that utilizes the YOLO v8 architecture for real-time detection of firearms in video streams. A diverse and extensive dataset, capturing a range of firearms in varying lighting and backgrounds, was meticulously assembled and preprocessed to enhance the model's adaptability to real-world scenarios. Leveraging the YOLO v8 framework, known for its real-time object detection accuracy, the model was fine-tuned to accurately identify firearms across different shapes and orientations.

Understanding the temporal evolution of cells poses a significant challenge in developmental biology. This study embarks on a comparative analysis of various machine-learning techniques to classify cell colony images across different timestamps, thereby aiming to capture dynamic transitions of cellular states. By performing Transfer Learning with state-of-the-art classification networks, we achieve high accuracy in categorizing single-timestamp images. Kohn-Sham density functional theory is the work horse of computational material science research. The core of Kohn-Sham density functional theory, the Kohn-Sham equations, output charge density, energy levels and wavefunctions. In principle, the electron density can be used to obtain several other properties of interest including total potential energy of the system, atomic forces, binding energies and electric constants. The ever-increasing frequency of occurrence and sophistication of DDoS attacks pose a serious threat to network security. Accurate classification of DDoS attacks with efficiency is crucial in order to develop effective defense mechanisms. In this thesis, we propose a novel approach for DDoS classification using the CatBoost algorithm, on CICDDoS2019, a benchmark dataset containing 12 variations of DDoS attacks and legitimate traffic using real-world traffic traces. With a developed ensemble feature selection method and feature engineering, our model proves to be a good fit for DDoS attack type prediction. The Herculaneum scrolls were buried and carbonized by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 and represent the only classical library discovered in situ. Charred by the heat of the eruption, the scrolls are extremely fragile. Since their discovery two centuries ago, some scrolls have been physically opened, leading to some textual recovery but also widespread damage. Many other scrolls remain in rolled form, with unknown contents. More recently, various noninvasive methods have been attempted to reveal the hidden contents of these scrolls using advanced imaging. Navigating safely and independently presents considerable challenges for people who are blind or have low vision (BLV), as it requires a comprehensive understanding of their neighborhood environment. Our user study reveals that materials and objects on sidewalks play a crucial role in navigation tasks. Unfortunately, current methods for assessing sidewalk materials are suboptimal, often relying on labor-intensive and expensive manual assessments that fail to capture the full range of sidewalk features critical to individuals with BLV.

From 2003 to 2014, the number of journalists assigned to cover the proceedings in state houses has declined by more than 30\%. During the same time period, non-profit projects such as Digital Democracy sought to collect and store legislative bill and hearing information on behalf of the public. More recently, AI4Reporters, an offshoot of Digital Democracy, seeks to actively summarize interesting legislative data.

The World Happiness Report is released every year, ranking each country by who is “happier” and explaining the variables and data they have used. This project attempts to build from that base and create a machine learning algorithm that can predict if a country will be in a “happy” or “could be happier” category. Findings show that taking a broader scope of variables can better help predict happiness. Policy implications are discussed in using both big data and considering social indicators to make better and lasting policies.

SEABEM, the Stacked Ensemble Algorithms Biomass Estimator Model, is a web application with a stacked ensemble of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms running on the backend to predict cover crop biomass for locations in Sub-Saharan. The SEABEM model was developed using a previously developed database of crop growth and yield that included site characteristics such as latitude, longitude, soil texture (sand, silt, and clay percentages), temperature, and precipitation.
