Stress-Induced Depolarization Of Single-Layer Pzt 95/5 Ferroelectric Films, Sergey I. Shkuratov, Jason Baird, Vladimir G. Antipov, Jay B. Chase, Wesley Hackenberger Apr 2019

Stress-Induced Depolarization Of Single-Layer Pzt 95/5 Ferroelectric Films, Sergey I. Shkuratov, Jason Baird, Vladimir G. Antipov, Jay B. Chase, Wesley Hackenberger

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ferroelectric (FE) films are widely used in electronic devices and low-power FE transducers. There is significant interest in expanding the usage of FE films to ultrahigh-power systems. The results are reported herein on experimental investigations of stress-induced depolarization of single-layer PbZr0.95Ti0.05O3 doped 2% Nb (PZT 95/5) poled FE films subjected to uniaxial adiabatic compression perpendicular and antiparallel to the direction of polarization. It was found that at a stress of 2.4 GPa, the 32-μm-thick films underwent a pressure induced transition to a nonpolar antiferroelectric phase and became completely depolarized in both modes of high strain …

Emittance Spectroscopy And Broadband Thermal Remote Sensing Applied To Phosphorite And Its Utility In Geoexploration: A Study In The Parts Of Rajasthan, India, Arindam Guha, Yasushi Yamaguchi, Snehamoy Chatterjee, Komai Rani, Kumranchat Vinod Kumar Apr 2019

Emittance Spectroscopy And Broadband Thermal Remote Sensing Applied To Phosphorite And Its Utility In Geoexploration: A Study In The Parts Of Rajasthan, India, Arindam Guha, Yasushi Yamaguchi, Snehamoy Chatterjee, Komai Rani, Kumranchat Vinod Kumar

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The contrast in the emissivity spectra of phosphorite and associated carbonate rock can be used as a guide to delineate phosphorite within dolomite. The thermal emissivity spectrum of phosphorite is characterized by a strong doublet emissivity feature with their absorption minima at 9 µm and 9.5 µm; whereas, host rock dolomite has relatively subdued emissivity minima at ~9 µm. Using the contrast in the emissivity spectra of phosphorite and dolomite, data obtained by the thermal bands of Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) sensor were processed to delineate phosphorite within dolomite. A decorrelation stretched ASTER radiance composite could …

Investigation Of Properties Alternation During Super-Critical Co2 Injection In Shale, Sai Wang, Kouqi Liu, Juan Han, Kegang Ling, Hongsheng Wang, Bao Jia Apr 2019

Investigation Of Properties Alternation During Super-Critical Co2 Injection In Shale, Sai Wang, Kouqi Liu, Juan Han, Kegang Ling, Hongsheng Wang, Bao Jia

Petroleum Engineering Faculty Publications

The low recovery of oil from tight liquid-rich formations is still a major challenge for a tight reservoir. Thus, supercritical CO2 flooding was proposed as an immense potential recovery method for production improvement. While up to date, there have been few studies to account for the formation properties' variation during the CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) process, especially investigation at the micro-scale. This work conducted a series of measurements to evaluate the rock mechanical change, mineral alteration and the pore structure properties' variation through the supercritical CO2 (Sc-CO2) injection process. Corresponding to the time variation (0 days, 10 days, 20 …

Evidence Of Instability In Previously-Mapped Landslides As Measured Using Gps, Optical, And Sar Data Between 2007 And 2017: A Case Study In The Portuguese Bend Landslide Complex, California, El Hachemi Y. Bouali, Thomas Oommen, Rüdiger Escobar-Wolf Apr 2019

Evidence Of Instability In Previously-Mapped Landslides As Measured Using Gps, Optical, And Sar Data Between 2007 And 2017: A Case Study In The Portuguese Bend Landslide Complex, California, El Hachemi Y. Bouali, Thomas Oommen, Rüdiger Escobar-Wolf

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Velocity dictates the destructive potential of a landslide. A combination of synthetic aperture radar (SAR), optical, and GPS data were used to maximize spatial and temporal coverage to monitor continuously-moving portions of the Portuguese Bend landslide complex on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California. Forty SAR images from the COSMO-SkyMed satellite, acquired between 19 July 2012 and 27 September 2014, were processed using Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI). Eight optical images from the WorldView-2 satellite, acquired between 20 February 2011 and 16 February 2016, were processed using the Co-registration of Optically Sensed Images and Correlation (COSI-Corr) technique. Displacement measurements were …

Wall Control Blasting At The Orphan Boy Mine – Butte, Montana, Jewel Sakyi Apr 2019

Wall Control Blasting At The Orphan Boy Mine – Butte, Montana, Jewel Sakyi

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Blasting is often conducted to produce desirable fragment sizes to minimize production cost and energy consumption in downstream processes, including loading, hauling, and crushing. However, the venting of explosive energy in the rock formation sometimes causes unwanted damage beyond the desired perimeter of the blast area. Control blasting has mainly been used in surface mining operations to minimalize blast damage. To explore the applicability of control blasting in underground mining operations, protect the safety of students, faculty, and staff, prevent overbreak, and to ensure the stability of openings and workings, four experimental control blasts, comprising of three smooth blasts and …

Developing Trees Tolerant To Degraded Mine Soils, Francis Inkoom Apr 2019

Developing Trees Tolerant To Degraded Mine Soils, Francis Inkoom

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The project discussed in this thesis is part of a larger project developing trees that can tolerate and withstand heavy metals and acidic soils from historic mining operations in Butte Montana as a solution to re-establishing long-term tree growth on those sites. The project involved growing tree seedlings native to Butte, Montana and planting them on degraded mine soils, tailings, and processing wastes (mine waste) located within the Butte Priority Soil Operable Unit (BPSOU). The seedlings were grown for 34 weeks in a greenhouse located on Montana Tech’s campus before being transplanted to a contaminated site (the Clark Mill site) …
