Coal Geology & Exploration
In recent years, breakthroughs have been achieved in the exploration of deep coalbed methane (CBM) in China based on fine-scale geological research and techniques such as multistage hydraulic fracturing using proppants in a horizontal well. As a result, some wells yielded daily gas production of up to 100000 m3, inspiring confidence again in the CBM industry. However, since deep coal reservoirs occur in a complex geological environment characterized by high in-situ stress, high geotemperature, high pore pressure, and low permeability, there is an urgent need to reveal the typical parameters of coal reservoirs at different depths and the …

Mechanisms And Technological Parameter Optimization Of Near-Wellbore Laser Thermal Fracturing For Deep Coal Seams, Zhao Haifeng, Yang Ziyi, Liang Wei, Zhong Junbing
Coal Geology & Exploration
China boasts abundant deep coalbed methane (CBM) resources, which play a significant role in further CBM production. However, deep coal seams exhibit low porosities and ultra-low permeabilities due to intricate geological conditions. In the drilling process, drilling fluids enter the reservoirs, prone to cause near-wellbore contamination. Although conventional hydraulic fracturing technology tends to create fractures in the direction of the maximum horizontal principal stress, it is challenging for this technology to achieve blockage removing throughout the whole borehole. Laser thermal fracturing technology can break rocks in a short time. Furthermore, it allows for the laser irradiation angle to change freely …

Coal Geology & Exploration
This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of factors restricting the commingled production of coal-measure gas and boost the contributions of various pay zones to gas production. To this end, it analyzed the essential factors of the dynamic, channel, and gas source conditions in the commingled production. The dynamic conditions for the commingled exploitation of multiple reservoirs can be met by (1) enhancing the flow conductivity of reservoirs by altering the crustal stress state and (2) changing reservoir fluid pressure by layers. Following this principle, this study proposed a method for the commingled production of coal-measure gas through layered …

Journal of Sustainable Mining
More than 50% of the radiation dose received by underground mine workers is mainly due to the inhalation of radon (222Rn) gas and its decay products in an underground mine working space. Monitoring and controlling of 222Rn exhalation in the underground mine working plays a vital role in minimizing the radiation risk hazards to the mine-workers. This study discusses the contribution of mine water and uranium ore to 222Rn activity concentration in mine air and its health risk assessment. The annual effective radiation dose (ERn) due to inhalation of 222Rn for mine workers is estimated 0.10 mSv/y. Furthermore, the estimated …

Journal of Sustainable Mining
Since the closure of mining activities in 2003, the coal basin of Gardanne in South-East France has experienced thousands of small-magnitude earthquake events, mostly triggered by the flooding of mine workings. Some of these events have been powerful enough to be strongly felt by the population, generating nuisance and concern about potential damage to buildings. The aim of this study is to improve the characterisation of the level of ground motion at the surface, by developing a ground-motion model for post-mining induced seismicity, based on several years of recorded data. A Bayesian-based method is applied to the data in order …

Exposure to coal dust in underground coal mines poses significant health risks to workers, including the development of diseases such as coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis. Current available methods for monitoring coal dust exposure are expensive and time-consuming, necessitating the exploration of alternative approaches. Low-cost light scattering particulate matter sensors offer a promising solution, and its development in recent years has demonstrated some success in air quality monitoring However, its application in sensing coal particles is limited partially due to that the operating condition in a mine is different than the atmosphere. Thus, the objective of this paper is to …

The Outburst Probability Index (Ww) As A New Tool In The Coal Seam Outburst Hazard Forecasting, Marcin Dreger, Piotr Celary
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Gas and rock outbursts are one of the most unpredictable natural hazards in Polish and worldwide underground mining. The complexity and unpredictability of this phenomenon make forecasting and underground prevention difficult to achieve. Gas-geodynamic phenomenon occurs in greater intensity in the southern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB) – close to the Bzie-Czechowice fault zone. The relatively low firmness of coal combined with high methane content and pressure may result in a coal seam outburst. To forecast the gas and rock outburst occurrence, the sorption capacity and gas diffusion parameters are used in Polish coal mining. To provide …

Major Challenges Of Deep Geothermal Systems And An Innovative Development Mode Of Regs Integrated With Energy Storage, Hou Zhengmeng, Wu Xuning, Luo Jiashun, Zhang Liehui, Li Zaoyuan, Cao Cheng, Wu Lin, Chen Qianjun
Coal Geology & Exploration
China has long been a global leader in the direct utilization of moderate- to low-temperature geothermal energy, in contrast to its sluggish progress in power generation using deep geothermal energy. Rocks in deep reservoirs exhibit decreased permeability under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, necessitating the establishment of engineered geothermal system (EGS) for the exploitation of deep geothermal energy. In an EGS, hydraulic fracturing is employed for reservoir stimulation to create artificially enhanced geothermal reservoirs with higher permeability. The current techniques for deep geothermal reservoir stimulation are predominantly borrowed from hydraulic fracturing processes employed in the oil and gas sector, placing limitations …
