Mineralization and subsequent calculus formation is a common complication of biofilm infections. In the urinary tract, these infected calculi often arise from infections by urease-producing bacteria. Ammonia, liberated by bacterial urease activity, increases urine pH, resulting in the precipitation of Ca and Mg as carbonateapatite {Ca₁₀(PO₄,CO₃)₆(OH,CO₃)₂} and struvite (NH₄MgP0₄·6H₂O). These minerals become entrapped in the organic matrix which surrounds the infecting organisms and ultimately grow into mature calculi. Weight bearing (WB) is an important factor influencing bone remodelling. The present study evaluates the effects of weight bearing and non-weight bearing (S) (achieved by tail suspension and hindlimb elevation) on the healing of a fibular osteotomy in adult male rats. After 9, 18 or 36 days under WB or S conditions, periosteum near the callus formed at the osteotomy site was compared to periosteum of the contralateral fibula (which did not receive an osteotomy) or to periosteum of fibula of control animals which did not receive an osteotomy. The use of backscattered electron (BSE) imaging as a tool for the qualitative measurement of mineral content in bone has been well documented. The challenge still remains to develop BSE imaging as a tool for quantitative mineral content analysis in bone. The limiting factor has been the ability to standardize the BSE signal within and between laboratories. Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDX) has been proposed as a method to standardize the BSE operating environment. A Lattice Boltzmann Subgrid Model For High Reynolds Number Flows, S. Hou, James D. Sterling, S. Chen, G. D. Doolen

A sub grid turbulence model for the lattice Boltzmann method is proposed for high Reynolds number fluid flow applications. The method, based on the standard Smagorinsky sub grid model and a single-time relaxation lattice Boltzmann method, incorporates the advantages of the lattice Boltzmann method for handling arbitrary boundaries and is easily implemented on parallel machines. The method is applied to a two-dimensional driven cavity flow for studying dynamics and the Reynolds number dependence of the flow structures. The substitution of other sub grid models, such as the dynamic sub grid model, in the framework of the LB method is discussed.

In this paper we analyze the reflection of non-reacting shock waves as oblique detonation waves. The 2D, steady, inviscid analysis makes use of detonation polar diagrams to identify incident shock angles that lead to reflected detonations, with and without detonation Mach stem formation. The implications of the results for design and operation of superdetonative ram accelerators are explored. The influence of the projectile forebody geometry, the propellant composition, and the takeover velocity is described. We conclude with a discussion of the significance of these parameters on superdetonative ram accelerator unstart phenomena.

In this paper, we discuss the cyclic operation of an enhanced combustion pulsejet engine (ECPE) applicable in the Mach number range of 0 to 3. The geometry of this engine naturally provides for integration into a new combined cycle engine with ramjets. As in the operation of conventional pulsejets, an ECPE provides engine aspiration, charge compression, combustion and expansion without the use of turbomachinery. The use of modern electronics, fuel injection, and feedback control offers the potential for performance improvements that could make the ECPE a cost-effective competitor for the turbojet engine. In this article we report steady, two-dimensional, inviscid solutions for the near field and far field of a supersonic reactive flow over a variable-double-ramp geometry. The incident shock wave compresses and heats the reactants that will combust after flowing some induction length. Upon reaction, a detonation wave forms and intersects the leading wave at some distance from the ramp surface. In this article, reaction-polar diagrams are developed, and the detonation branch solutions are used to investigate the wave interaction processes that may lead to a steady three-wave structure. This study examined the effect of the implementation of a risk management program tool on worker safety knowledge in a composite building material fabrication facility whose workers suffered from an increasingly high injury (incidence) rate in recent years. Risk assessment codes (RACs) and job safety analyses (JSAs) were the primary tools used to introduce workers to the concept of risk. Because employee involvement is a crucial element in JSA development. employee input was frequently solicited throughout JSA development.

This thesis describes new algorithms to localize regions-of-interests (ROIs) three dimensionally from a pair of digitized mammograms. This work is intended to add a layer of sophistication to computer aided diagnosis by putting to use the fixed and measurable parameters of mammographic imaging. The fixed parameters are the source to film orientation and the podium-image distance. Measurable parameters are the rotation angle of the x-ray tube from the horizontal and the compression depth (the distance from compression paddle to contact podium distance) at the time of imaging. A method is presented for the application of binary-pair partitioned neural networks to the task of speaker verification. This technique is based on a previously developed neural network classifier for speaker identification.

The main focus of this research was the development and testing of the algorithms necessary to extend the binary-pair partitioning approach from speaker identification to speaker verification. The method is based on the development of a user profile which is obtained from discriminative data provided by the binary-pair partitioned neural networks.

Experimental results are provided which demonstrate the viability of this approach, using the TIMIT speech corpus for …

Specimens of three Pd-Cu-Ga dental alloys cast five years ago and subsequently stored at room temperature were reexamined and observed to have lower amounts of the eutectic constituents in the near-surface region than originally present, along with other microstructural changes. This previously unreported room temperature aging behavior of these alloys is attributed to the presence of high-diffusivity paths in the non-equilibrium ascast eutectic structures and to the essential role of the surface for the vacancy diffusion mechanism. These results may have important clinical significance for the ill vivo corrosion resistance and long-term biocompatibility of the Pd-Cu-Ga alloys.

Total body bone absorptiometry reveals low mineral density in both postmenopausal osteoporosis and osteomalacia patients. The method was used to investigate the effect of calcitriol administration on patients suffering from one of these conditions. In osteomalacia, the administration of calcitriol resulted in a dramatic improvement in bone mineral density (sometimes up to 50% in 12 months), indicating the rapid mineralization of previously uncalcified bone tissue as a result of the normalization of the Ca x P product. In osteoporosis a similar treatment was seen to halt the progressive decrease in bone mineral levels and sometimes resulted in minor increases in …

Bone chamber intravital microscopy combines the control volume of in vitro models and the chemical complexity of in vivo models to optimize the study of bone physiology in situ. As an optical tool it provides a window to dynamic events at the tissue level of magnification. In particular, it allows measures of microvascular events: (1) in space by magnifying local perfused vasculature and microcirculation at any instant, and (2) in time by providing the same volume of tissue for weekly viewing of an evolving process such as bone healing. A physical model of the bladder has been used to study the process of urinary catheter encrustation. Techniques have been devised for the preparation of sections through these encrustations in situ on the luminal surfaces of catheters and for mapping the distribution of calcium and magnesium in the biofilms. Transmission electron microscopy on these sections showed struvite-like crystals lying in the matrix and in direct contact with the catheter surface. Calcium phosphate ("bioapatite") was distributed throughout the film and many of these amorphous particles appear to have cells at their cores. This study explores an information-theoretic/log-linear approach to multivariate time series analysis. The method is applied to daily rainfall data(4 sites, 9 years), originally quantitative but here treated as dichotomous. The analysis ascertains which lagged variables are most predictive of future rainfall and how season can be optimally defined as an auxiliary predicting parameter. Breast cancer is a disease that accounts for a disturbingly large number of deaths in females each year. Its prevalence is a topic of concern to all of us since it can affect our families, friends, and coworkers. Although mammographic screening is the most effective method currently available for the early detection of breast cancer, it is far from being an infallible procedure. Mammographic reading is error prone, partly because of the complexity of the task and partly because of the variability in human performance.
