Optimization Of Circular Silencers Internally Hybridized With Multiple Reverse Chambers Using The Ga Method, Min-Chie Chiu, Ying-Chun Chang, Tian-Syung Lan, Ho-Sheng Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A noise abatement method using an eigen function in conjunction with an optimizer (Genetic Algorithm) under a space-constrain situation is proposed in this study concerning a high order wave propagation effect. An eigen function is used to describe an acoustical field and shorten the acoustical model in a four-pole transfer matrix form. The system’s four-pole matrix estimates the Transmission Loss (TL) for the silencers by multiplying individual four-pole matrices.
Additionally, a case study of an air compressor’s broadband noise elimination is introduced. Three types of circular reverse silencers (silencers A-C) internally hybridized with multiple straight chambers are adopted to efficiently …

Numerical Investigation Of The Uncertainty Of Typhoon Wave Parameters Retrieval Using Hf Radar, Toan Duy Dao, Hwa Chien
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The aim of this study was to identify the sources of uncertainties of typhoon wave field monitoring using HF radar and to quantitatively assess the bias of the wave parameters, such as significant wave height and mean period, retrieved under various conditions. The strategy was to apply a purely numerical simulation of the Doppler-range spectra and then compare the estimation results to the target. For the quantitative investigation, a numerical test-bed was established. The test-bed was used to simulate the Doppler spectra based on Barrick’s (1972) theory by using the input of the directional wave spectra. The typhoon wave spectra …

A Fused Data Based Real-Time Collision Warning System For Ferries In The Yangtze River, Xiaojia Liu, Ke Zhang, Han Xue, Yingtang Li
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The risks for ferries in the Yangtze River are relatively high, as they frequently cross the main traffic flows, leading to more intersections with other upwards and downwards ships. Although some studies have developed many models to assess collision risks in the Yangtze River, collision warning studies on ferries are scant. Meanwhile, most of the current collision studies evaluate risk based on AIS data, which are incapable of providing real-time ship information as they are discrete-time series data. In this work, fused data combining radar and AIS data are applied in a real-time ship collision warning model to assess the …

Experimental Study Of The Effect Of A Solid Wing Conveyor On Marine Debris Collection, Erik Sugianto, Jeng-Horng Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Marine debris is a global problem that has not been resolved. This has encouraged the emergence of marine debris cleaning technologies, one of which is a conveyor ship. However, how effective conveyors are in collecting waste has not been studied. In this paper, experimental research on conveyors as marine debris collectors is investigated. The capability of catamarans with or without solid wing conveyors to collect marine debris is explored. Three kinds of marine debris collection models are used: no-wing conveyor, a 12.5-cm-long wing conveyor, and an 18.75-cm-long wing conveyor. Artificial marine debris (AMD) is spread on the water surface in …

Solving Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems With Nonlinear Integral Boundary Conditions By Local And Nonlocal Boundary Shape Functions Methods, Chein-Shan Liu, Yung-Wei Chen, Jian-Hung Shen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The paper considers the second-order nonlinear boundary value problem (NBVP), which is equipped with nonlinear integral boundary conditions (BCs). Two novel iterative algorithms are developed to overcome the difficulty of NBVP with double nonlinearities involved. In the first iterative algorithm, two nonlocal shape functions incorporating the linear integral terms are derived, and a nonlocal boundary shape function (NBSF) is formulated to assist the solution. Let the solution be the NBSF so that the NBVP can be exactly transformed into an initial value problem. The new variable is a free function in the NBSF, and its initial values are given. For …

One of the most widely used metals on the periodic table is Platinum (Pt). The name is derived from the Spanish Platina, meaning “silver.” This malleable, ductile material is widely used in applications due to its unique chemical properties. A couple of these unique properties include a high melting point and good resistance to corrosion or chemical attack. Platinum materials have alloys that are indispensable in the chemical laboratory for electrodes. This allows for material applications in crucibles and dishes to withstand elevated temperatures. Platinum is used primarily in catalytic converters in vehicles converting emissions from the vehicle’s engine into …

ME 4133/6133 Mechanical Metallurgy
High-carbon steel can be processed through numerous methods. The method that will be focused on primarily is processing high-carbon steel through means of additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing is the industrial production name for 3D printing, a computer-controlled process that creates three-dimensional objects by depositing materials, usually in layers. AM methods like wire laser additive manufacturing (WLAM) and electron beam melting (EBM) are all common methods for fabricating high carbon steel. The perks associated with these methods are that they improve some drawbacks of the natural properties of high-carbon steel. This paper discusses the uses of these additive manufacturing methods along …

ME 4133/6133 Mechanical Metallurgy
The first known use of carbon steel dates back to 500 A.D. when a blacksmith mistakenly used iron ore as a primary material for smithing. This material, as the name suggests, is made up of both carbon and iron. This material, as one of the most abundant at the time, was used most frequently in European and Asian countries. “Carbon steel first appeared around the year 500 AD in Damascus steel swords as well as Japanese swords. They were prized for their sharp edges and sturdiness compared to other weapons of the era. The composition of these swords was very …
Integration Of Hadfield Steel Into Modern Body Armor, Jason T. Fridlund
Integration Of Hadfield Steel Into Modern Body Armor, Jason T. Fridlund
ME 4133/6133 Mechanical Metallurgy
The increased lethality of recently fielded projectiles mandates a proportional escalation in armor performance. Recent advancements in ceramic technologies have allowed designers to incorporate harder but more brittle materials into hard armor designs to defeat yet more capable penetrating projectiles. Ceramics suffer from the feature of shattering, however, even when impacted by threats below their design parameters. While this shattering mechanism is used effectively to dissipate energy from high-energy rifle projectiles, it is wasted on low-energy projectiles, and can result in easily damaged lifesaving gear, both of which are undesirable in combat. In contrast, steel body armor has been used …

Several industrial processes, such as stainless steel fabrication and textiles, produce heavy metal byproducts such as chromium. These heavy metals have detrimental effects on the surrounding environments and humans. Recently, electrochemical-driven sensors have been studied and show great potential in miniaturization while still providing measurements at a low cost. In addition, atomically thin allotropes of carbon, graphene, and graphene oxide have shown remarkable results in producing a highly responsive and selective sensor platform. These results are due to their excellent electrical conductivity, high surface area for utility, and physicochemical stability. The existing challenge for electrochemical-driven sensors is understanding the molecular …

Symposium of Student Scholars
In this research, we created supercoiled polymer with a nylon fishing line, conductive thread, silver paste, graphite, and graphene. The silver paste was used for conductive properties on crimping joints to allow electrical connections. Graphite and graphene help stimulate heat dissipation, resulting in quicker muscle motion, contraction, and elongation. Supercoiled polymer (polymer coil) actuators have many uses and are inexpensive compared to other actuators as they can be made of cheap materials such as sewing threads and fishing lines. Compared with recent actuators consist of memory shape alloys for their unique crystal structure, however they are expensive to produce, and …

Nanoscale Imaging Of Antiferromagnetic Domains In Epitaxial Films Of Cr2O3 Via Scanning Diamond Magnetic Probe Microscopy, Adam Erickson, Syed Qamar Abbas Shah, Ather Mahmood, Ilja Fescenko, Christian H. Binek, Adbelghani Laraoui
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We report direct imaging of boundary magnetization associated with antiferromagnetic domains in magnetoelectric epitaxial Cr2O3 thin films using diamond nitrogen vacancy microscopy. We found a correlation between magnetic domain size and structural grain size which we associate with the domain formation process. We performed field cooling, i.e., cooling from above to below the Néel temperature in the presence of a magnetic field, which resulted in the selection of one of the two otherwise degenerate 180° domains. Lifting of such a degeneracy is achievable with a magnetic field alone due to the Zeeman energy of a weak …

This work presents an in-depth numerical investigation into a hypothesized two-layer central pattern generator (CPG) that controls mammalian walking and how different parameter choices might affect the stepping of a simulated neuromechanical model. Particular attention is paid to the functional role of features that have not received a great deal of attention in previous work: the weak cross-excitatory connectivity within the rhythm generator and the synapse strength between the two layers. Sensitivity evaluations of deafferented CPG models and the combined neuromechanical model are performed. Locomotion frequency is increased in two different ways for both models to investigate whether the model’s …

Predictions Of Indentation Stiffness Of Musculoskeletal Regions Using Ultrasound, Sean Doherty
ETD Archive
Tissue indentation response is an important metric for understanding how different musculoskeletal regions respond to loading and is a function of the tissue’s form. Modem imaging techniques provide information about the internal structures of human tissue. Ultrasound remains one of the most common imaging techniques performed, given its portability and low costs. Prior work and data collection on 100 patients involved the collection of ultrasound images at eight different locations across the musculoskeletal extremities. Given the tissue structure information that the medical imaging provided, it was hypothesized that the mechanical properties of the tissue could be predicted from this data. …

Development And Control Of A Pediatric Lower Limb Exoskeleton For Gait Guidance, Anthony Clarence Goo
ETD Archive
Several genetic, developmental and neurological disorders can cause various levels of gait impairment in the pediatric population. Powered lower limb orthoses, or exoskeletons, have recently been used to address gait impairment and afford therapists alternative solutions and strategies for gait therapy. Most exoskeleton research has focused on the adult population while the pediatric population remains underserved. The limitations of current pediatric exoskeletons make them impractical for use in both community and clinical settings. Furthermore, exoskeleton controllers suitable for these environments should promote human volitional control while guiding the subject towards a dynamically stable healthy gait pattern.

In-Situ Tribology Of Engineered Surfaces With 3d-Printed Micro/Nano-Textures, Mahyar Afshar Mohajer
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Surface texturing is an effective way to reduce the adhesion and friction between two contacting surfaces by reducing the real area of contact between them, providing a potential solution for adhesion and friction-induced failures, for example, failures in micro-/nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). Surface texturing is also essential to the realization of functional surfaces such as superhydrophobic/philic and icephobic surfaces. However, textures are prone to deformation due to being subjected to higher contact pressures. The advancement of 3D nanoprinting by two-photon lithography (TPL), combined with the ability to make an in-situ observation of the interplay between the forces and the sliding surfaces …

Interfacial Engineering Of Nickel-Rich Layered Oxide Cathodes Via Atomic Layer Deposition (Ald), Xin Wang
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Layered nickel-rich cathodes LiNixMnyCozO2 (NMCs, x + y + z =1, x ≥ 0.6) are regarded as one of the most promising cathode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), given their remarkably reduced cost and increased capacity compared to the conventional LiCoO2 cathode. However, the deployment of these Ni-rich cathodes has been hindered by the continuous loss of practical capacity and reduction in average working voltage, inherently due to their interfacial, structural, and thermodynamic instability. To address these issues, interfacial engineering via surface modification has been well-recognized as an effective strategy and a large number of coating materials have been …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Cooperative systems, like any other dynamic systems, suffer in performance because of uncertainty yet there is an added layer of uncertainty due to the communication among agents. Therefore, analytic solution to these problems are hard if not impossible. With the advancements in the linear and non-linear methods, i.e. linear matrix inequalities (LMI) and non-linear transformations, robust performance analysis and controller synthesis for cooperative systems can be reformulated as optimization problems with LMI constraints as has been done in the last two decades. Another aspect of the problem becomes visible as the cooperative system grows larger and that necessitates faster solution …

Effect Of Centrifugal Force On The Load Capacity Of Thrust Gas Bearing, Rakan Mohammed Haidar
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
It has been known for many decades that both rigid and foil thrust bearings are two options in the market for high-speed turbomachinery systems. Their advantages encompass the lower manufacturing cost, the lighter weight, and the flexibility in allowing “component misalignment and runout.” When the operating fluid is air, the classical lubrication theory works perfectly. Any additional terms of the inertia effect might be somehow less significant and sometimes negligible since the viscous forces will be dominant, but this may not be the case if the bearing operates in a harsh environment, such as a high-pressure environment. Nonetheless, this is …

In recent years, applications including IoT (Internet of Things), content delivery, and 5G have created a large demand for low-latency access to data processing and data storage. Traditional centralized data centers weren’t designed with those use cases in mind. Small data centers such as edge computing data centers and colocation data centers house more than half of all servers across the United States. Rear Door Heat exchangers (RDHx) provide an energy-efficient cooling solution to traditional CRAC/CRAH - based cooling methods by localizing the heat removal from the rack. With more control over air distribution through a shorter path between the …

Harvesting energy from waste heat would benefit in creating sustainable systems. Specifically, thermoelectric energy conversion can be used for low-grade waste heat recovery. However, the efficiency of conventional solid-state (i.e., semiconductor) has reached to the upper limit and could not make any advancement for more than 30 years. As a paradigm shift from solid-state thermoelectric conversion, in this study, ionic thermoelectric phenomena in liquid are explored. An electrolyte, with disproportionate size of anions and cations, when subjected to a temperature gradient can experience induced ion separation. In the phenomenon known as “Soret effect”, the smaller ions with higher mobility move …
