Cam And Design For Manufacturing: Developing A Project-Based Learning Course, Stephen Pierson
Cam And Design For Manufacturing: Developing A Project-Based Learning Course, Stephen Pierson
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
To effectively serve student career success, mechanical engineering programs must teach students how to account for manufacturing considerations in design. Despite this, manufacturing education is a glaring area of need in current engineering curricula. In fact, basic manufacturing knowledge is one of the only hard skills consistently ranked as one of the greatest weaknesses of mechanical engineering hires in surveys of industrial employers over the last few decades. Without radically changing departmental curriculum to include more emphasis on design-build projects, one solution to combat this is to incubate a lab course in mechanical engineering programs in which undergraduates would practice …

Characterizing Brain And Skull Mechanics In The Minipig Using Magnetic Resonance Elastography, Shuaihu Wang
Characterizing Brain And Skull Mechanics In The Minipig Using Magnetic Resonance Elastography, Shuaihu Wang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Computational models and simulation are important tools to investigate the mechanisms underlying traumatic brain injury (TBI); their accuracy depends strongly on accurate model parameters, including the mechanical properties of the brain and its interactions with the skull. However, most existing TBI modeling studies are performed using material properties derived from animal tissue obtained after death. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) provides a non-invasive method for estimating the mechanical properties of soft tissue. The overall objective of this thesis is to characterize the biomechanical properties of brain tissue and brain-skull interface in the minipig by using MRE. This was achieved through pursuit …

Experimental Analysis Study Wave Drift Force Of Moored Floating Production Units (Fpu), Arifin Rifliansah, Wibowo Harso Nugroho
Makara Journal of Technology
Drift forces caused by sea waves and currents are an important aspect that needs to be studied in planning moored floating structures, especially Floating Production Units (FPU) type ships which are operated for oil and gas exploration. This study describes the drift forces on the FPU which is subjected to environmental loads in the form of waves. The slow-drift movement that occurs in a moored FPU, and experiencing irregular waves is a very important problem. The complexity of determining drift forces analytically and numerically requires the use of hydrodynamics model test. In the model test on a certain model scale …

As a way of accelerating the deployment of affordable and clean renewable energy generation technologies, applying a pump working as a turbine coupled to a self-excited induction generator is gaining popularity in various areas including energy recovery and micro hydro systems. However, it is currently challenging to predict the performance of the PAT-SEIG system and there is no agreed-upon rule on the selection of the appropriate system to be installed at a particular site. This paper has presented multi-objective optimization to select the best operating point of the PAT-SEIG system. The results show that the peak efficiencies for the PAT …
Optimal Load Shedding During Service Restoration In Electrical Secondary Distribution Network Based On Reinforcement Learning, Rukia J. Mwifunyi
Optimal Load Shedding During Service Restoration In Electrical Secondary Distribution Network Based On Reinforcement Learning, Rukia J. Mwifunyi
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Increased stress in traditional power systems results in blackouts due to voltage instability attributed to a mismatch between available capacity and load demand, especially in distribution networks. Service restoration schemes are designed to return power supply to the affected parts of the networks. The availability of insufficient supply is a complex problem that requires operational experience or an automatic system. The stochastic nature of load demand significantly impacts service restoration as it results in increased restored demand in case a fault occurs during off-peak hours and helps reduce overload if the fault occurs during peak hours. The study adopts an …

An Optimization Tool For A Standalone Photovoltaic System, Johanes Kasilima
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Stand-alone photovoltaic systems (SAPV) are often used in remote areas where access to grid electricity is limited. This system depends on solar energy. However, Photovoltaic (PV) systems need a greater initial investment than conventional sources of energy, and their effectiveness is reliant on a number of environmental conditions such as the unpredictable solar radiation. One step in reducing the investment cost of a PV system is determining the optimal size of solar PV components that minimize costs. This paper presents a Particle Swarm based optimization tool for sizing Stand-alone PV systems. The optimization tool selects the optimal Levelized Cost of …

Electron-Phonon Interaction Mediated Gigantic Enhancement Of Thermoelectric Power Factor Induced By Topological Phase Transition., Zhi Li, Koushik Pal, Huiju Lee, Chris Wolverton, Yi Xia
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
We propose an effective strategy to significantly enhance the thermoelectric power factor (PF) of a series of 2D semimetals and semiconductors by driving them toward a topological phase transition (TPT). Employing first-principles calculations with an explicit consideration of electron-phonon interactions, we analyze the electronic transport properties of germanene across the TPT by applying hydrogenation and biaxial strain. We reveal that the nontrivial semimetal phase, hydrogenated germanene with 8% biaxial strain, achieves a considerable 4-fold PF enhancement, attributed to the highly asymmetric electronic structure and semimetallic nature of the nontrivial phase. We extend the strategy to another two representative 2D materials …

Analyzing The Effects Of Atmospheric Turbulent Fluctuations On The Wake Structure Of Wind Turbines And Their Blade Vibrational Dynamics, Alayna Farrell, Fernando Ponta, Apurva Baruah
Michigan Tech Publications
In recent trends, a rising demand for renewable energy has driven wind turbines to larger proportions, where lighter blade designs are often adopted to reduce the costs associated with logistics and production. This causes modern utility-scale wind turbine blades to be inherently more flexible, and their amplified aeroelastic sensitivity results in complex multi-physics reactions to variant atmospheric conditions, including dynamic patterns of aerodynamic loading at the rotor and vortex structure evolutions within the wake. In this paper, we analyze the influence of inflow variance for wind turbines with large, flexible rotors through simulations of the National Rotor Testbed (NRT) turbine, …

Measuring Soot In A Novel Configuration For Diffusion Flames Fueled By Ethylene Doped With Iso-Dodecane, Christian Bjork
Honors Scholar Theses
Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) are seen as the path forward for decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors. Using SAFs over traditional fossil fuels abates carbon dioxide emissions but still may present soot emission problems. A milestone in the abatement of soot would be understating its formation mechanisms.
This study aims to quantify soot products resulting from an ethylene flame doped with iso-dodecane, a surrogate SAF component. The burner selected for the investigation is the novel Planar Mixing Layer Flame (PMLF) which allows the tracking of soot formation with the height above the burner (HAB) in a stable diffusion flame. A baseline ethylene-fueled flame …

Aerodynamic Design And Analysis Of A Modified 2006 Mazda Miata, William N. Recher
Aerodynamic Design And Analysis Of A Modified 2006 Mazda Miata, William N. Recher
Honors College Theses
Aerodynamic forces developed by automobiles have destabilizing effects at high speed. These forces tend to skew toward a vehicle’s rear which can present safety concerns, especially for rear-wheel-drive automobiles like the Mazda Miata. To address oversteer and high-speed instability, a vehicle’s design can be tailored to bring about aerodynamic balance and improve traction. LiDAR was used to bring the physical automobile into the digital space. Then, a splitter and diffuser were added to reduce the magnitude of the destabilizing forces. Next, the size and shape of the rear-wing required to balance the vehicle was calculated using a combination of parameters …

Experimental Investigation Of Various Hydrogen Knock Limit Extension Strategies On A Hydrogen-Gasoline Dual Fuel Spark Ignition Engine, Sanad Puthan Purayil
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Hydrogen is a clean and carbon free substitute with the ability to significantly cut down the harmful emissions while enhancing the energy efficiency of internal combustion engines (ICE) typically powered by conventional fossil fuels. Hydrogen is the most abundant element which can be easily obtained from sources like water and biomass. The wide flammability range and high laminar flame velocity outstands hydrogen from other fuels. However, hydrogen fueled engines are more prone to abnormal combustion like knock and backfire due to its low ignition energy and high adiabatic flame temperature. To avoid backfire, several well-developed approaches have been reported. Unlike …

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is an important tool for predicting thermo-mechanical properties of polymer resins at the nanometer length scale, which is particularly important for efficient computationally driven design of advanced composite materials and structures. Because of the statistical nature of modeling amorphous materials on the nanometer length scale, multiple MD models (replicates) are typically built and simulated for statistical sampling of predicted properties. Larger replicates generally provide higher precision in the predictions but result in higher simulation times. Unfortunately, there is insufficient information in the literature to establish guidelines between MD model size and the resulting precision in predicted …
