One very important part of research is the development of effective, reliable instruments. The measurement of turbulence in flow fields is a complex research problem. It depends heavily upon the hot-wire anemometer. This thesis describes the evaluation and use of a constant- current hot-wire anemometer, and presents the equations governing its use for turbulence measurements. The thesis first enumerates and explains some of the important parameters of turbulent flows, providing the basis for the discussion of their measurement which follows. The two most important areas involving the gas- particle mechanism are nuclear reactor heat exchangers and liquid and solid rockets.

The object of this work was to design and build equipment to measure the aerodynamic forces which will cause self-induced oscillations of a body having an unsymmetrical cross-section, such as a D-section. This self-induced oscillation has been called "stall flutter" or in electrical transmission lines, "galloping-transmission lines." It is hoped that this equipment will be used to gain basic Information about these aerodynamic forces.

In particular, shells of revolution have been widely utilized in the missile industry whereas shells of arbitrary shape have been incorporated in the architectural design of today's modern buildings.
