A theory of fracture is proposed for brittle and near brittle fracture. The theory includes the Griffith-Irwin theory as a special case. Developed for opening mode loading in plane geometry, the theory is based on a solution for a slit in an infinite elastic plate with an arbitrary relative displacement along the slit. Particular relative displacement functions are chosen and studied in detail by calculating the mean stress, maximum shear stress, maximum tensile stress, and energy density fields as well as the tractions applied on the slit. "The objective of the research being reported in this thesis was to conduct a series of experiments on two commonly used structural metals in several different environmental pressures so that a graphical representation of the material response both to yielding and fracture could be ascertained. It was further intended to show that parameters herein defined and called effective stress, effective strain, and pressure are useful parameters for graphically representing the material response. "A study has been made of the application of impact dampers to two types of continuous systems, a simply supported and a clamped beam. Previous efforts have included the effect of impact dampers on single degree of freedom and other systems with finite numbers of degrees of freedom.

Experimental models were tested in the laboratory and finite element computer programs were developed to calculate response. Results from calculations agree favorably with experimental tests. Further, results from the first few natural modes also compare reasonably with data published on systems with finite number of degrees of freedom.

"A "Schmidt filter" is proposed to compute an optimal orthonormal basis for a set of "noisy" filter input functions. Procedures for determining the transfer function and inverse transfer function of the filter are given. The Schmidt filter is applied to the problem of determining mathematical models of discrete, stationary, linear, dynamic systems for the case where measurements may be corrupted by noise of unknown statistics. The identification problem is reconsidered for the case where noise and signal moments are specified. "The exact formulations for the radiative flux and the emissive power are presented for a two-dimensional, finite, planar, absorbing and emitting, gray medium in radiative equilibrium. Exact expressions are obtained for the medium subjected to the following types of boundary conditions: (1) cosine varying diffuse, (2) cosine varying collimated, (3) constant temperature strip, and (4) the strip illuminated by a uniform collimated flux. The solutions for the physically unrealistic cosine varying models are used to construct the solutions for the more practical finite strip models. 1. To determine the viscoelastic properties of polymers on creep test under constant load;
2. To determine the internal friction (loss factor) of polymers under periodic loading condition;
3. To determine the delayed time or life time on fracture of the polymer under constant loading ; and
4. To verify the relationship, theoretically predicted, between the time to fracture and the material characteristics of the polymer with experimental observations.

The elastic strain waves resulting from the impact of two 3/4-in-dia 6061-T6 aluminum bars are studied experimentally and analytically. Experimental data are obtained from strain gages on the center line and outer surface of the bar, located at various distances from the impact end of the bar. Experimental data are compared to numerical results obtained from integrating the exact equations of two-dimensional motion. In general, agreement between the numerical and experimental results is very good. © 1972 by ASME.

Linear stability of the developing laminar flow of an electrically conducting, incompressible fluid in a parallel-plate channel under a transverse magnetic field is investigated. The case of small magnetic Reynolds numbers is treated. The developing flows whose stability characteristics are studied correspond to those induced by a uniform and a parabolic velocity distribution at the channel inlet. The stability of the fully developed Hartmann flow is also reexamined. Neutral stability curves and axial variations of the critical Reynolds number are presented for a range of Hartmann numbers between 0 and 4. It is found that for Hartmann numbers larger than …

Lumped parameter models commonly used to describe continuous one-dimensional and Bernoulli-Elder beam vibration problems have been compared on the basis of maximum system, strain energy. The consistent mass matrix approach has been included in the comparison. Standard matrix techniques have been employed to mathematically obtain desired solutions. Closed form solutions and solutions via the models to Ike system strain energy were obtained for all systems in three dynamic states: Free vibrations, constant base acceleration, and half sine base acceleration.
