Development Of A Low Cost Pc Based Robot Vision System, Raghunandan Jadhav Jan 1988

Development Of A Low Cost Pc Based Robot Vision System, Raghunandan Jadhav

Theses

There has been a continued. interest in utilizing machine vision systems for robot guidance applications. Commercial vision systems can be programmed to give information about the parts in the robot work area and this information can be used by the robot computer to guide the robot. In most applications, however, the vision information cannot be easily integrated with the robot control language. This thesis considers implementation of part identification routines directly into a robot guidance language. This makes all the complicated machine vision algorithms transparent to the user and allows him to treat higher level vision functions as an extension …

Calculation Of Heat Transfer At The Center Of A Round Plate, In Forced Convection Stagnation Flow, Ali Rohafza Jan 1988

Calculation Of Heat Transfer At The Center Of A Round Plate, In Forced Convection Stagnation Flow, Ali Rohafza

Theses

The theoretical study presented here examines heat transfer at the center of a round plate, in forced convection stagnation flow.

Note that in the region of stagnation point, the flow is always laminar.

Important results presented include the variations of the similarity function f and its derivative f’ with the vertical coordinate; these results were found by using the power series method to solve the governing non-linear differential equation. In order to do that , certain things were assumed like, for example, as the point at which two solutions were spliced, η0 =2.0, or assuming the solution at η …

Proposed Scheduling Methods For Printed Circuit Board Assembly, Tali Freed, Ezey M. Dar-El, Oded Z. Maimon

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The current practice in the assembly of electronic components on printed circuit boards (PCB's) is serial production, a process characterized by very long set-up times.

However. with the advent of efficient on-line process information, new production control methods are now possible. This paper proposes two new production methods - the Grouped Set-up (GSU) method and the Sequence-Dependent Scheduling (SDS) method, which can significantly reduce set-up times.

It is shown that the GSU always performs better than the SDS method in terms of total production flow (throughput). while the SDS performs better than the GSU method in terms of work-in-process (WIP) …

Other resources

The purpose of the work was to critically re-examine and investigate the evaluation of refrigerant compressors and to determine and discriminate between the factors which influence their characteristics. The objectives also included the investigation of techniques by which the characteristics can be established and the suggestion of ways in which compressor performance can be described and quantified. The particular compressor which was tested was of the reciprocating open type. Existing theories relating to the efficiency of displacement utilisation are extended to yield an overall framework in which the various influences can be described and quantified. Conventional parameters for the quantification …

Investigation Of Wear Of Materials By Laser Speckle Photography, Mohamed A. Seif Jan 1988

Investigation Of Wear Of Materials By Laser Speckle Photography, Mohamed A. Seif

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study utilizes a non-contact technique, laser speckle photography, to measure deformations associated with sliding wear. These deformations are those which occur on the "side" of a rectangular-section pin which is in sliding contact against a counterface disc. The "side" of the pin is illuminated by a pulsed ruby laser beam, and a double exposure specklegram is made to obtain deformations which occur between laser pulses. So, by appropriately sequencing pulses, deformation histories can be obtained, in situ. Since the exposed "side" of the thin pin specimen represents the "cover" layer under which subsurface sections lie, the deformation history observable …

Theoretical Thermodynamic Properties Of Low Temperature Fluids, Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal Dec 1987

Theoretical Thermodynamic Properties Of Low Temperature Fluids, Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal

Masters Theses

The thermodynamic functions for low temperature fluids are computed using parametric integral equations and perturbation theory. Parametric integral equation N is applied to a low temperature Lennard-Jones gas. It is found that there is no significant improvement over the better known parametric integral equation C. The two parameter integral equation T is applied to a low temperature square-well potential and is found to be unsatisfactory at reduced temperatures of T*= 1.4 and 1.6, but quite accurate at T* = 2.2. The equation T results for T* = 2.2 are used as the reference system in perturbation theory computations. Tables of …

Definition Of An Asymmetric Domain For Intercrystalline Misorientation In Cubic Materials In The Space Of Euler Angles, Brent L. Adams, Junwu Zhao Dec 1987

Definition Of An Asymmetric Domain For Intercrystalline Misorientation In Cubic Materials In The Space Of Euler Angles, Brent L. Adams, Junwu Zhao

Faculty Publications

The authors wish to acknowledge the support of the United States Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, under grant No. DE-FG02-85ER45203. Critical review by Professor Dorian Hatch of the Physics Department at Brigham Young University is gratefully acknowledged. A new asymmetric domain for intercrystalline misorientation is defined in the space of Euler angles for materials exhibiting cubic (Oh point-group) lattice symmetry. The invariant measure for this new domain is nearly constant; this is in significant contrast to the previous domain defined by MacKenzie [Biornetrika (1958), 45, 229-240]. Distribution functions in the misorientation can now be represented with greater …

Investigation Of The Excessive Bending Stiffness Of The Four Node Plane Stress/Plane Strain Quadrilateral Finite Element, William Lee Hacker Nov 1987

Investigation Of The Excessive Bending Stiffness Of The Four Node Plane Stress/Plane Strain Quadrilateral Finite Element, William Lee Hacker

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

An eigenvalue-eigenvector approach is taken to study the details of the causes of and remedies for the overly stiff behavior exhibited by this element. The exact functional variation of the eigenpairs with element aspect ratio and material properties are derived for rectangular elements. These analytic expressions for the eigenpairs have not previously appeared in the literature. It is then shown that only the eigenvalues of the two flexure modes are decreased by the lower integration rules that are often applied, thereby causing a more flexible response. Knowing the variation in the eigenvalues with the various integrations then allows the element …

Development Of A Parametric Analysis Microcomputer Model For Evaluating The Thermodynamic Performance Of A Reciprocating Brayton Cycle Engine, Thomas Joseph White Nov 1987

Development Of A Parametric Analysis Microcomputer Model For Evaluating The Thermodynamic Performance Of A Reciprocating Brayton Cycle Engine, Thomas Joseph White

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, applicable data from research on IC engines have been adapted to PACE engine designs. Data from studies on heat transfer, friction, and pressure losses, in particular, have been used. Certain parameters which define operation and design characteristics appear to influence PACE engine performance very strongly. Some of the more critical parameters, notably friction and heat transfer coefficients, must be determined experimentally if accurate model results are to be expected. Pressure ratio, compressor RPM, and maximum combustor temperature, the independent operating parameters, also have a dramatic effect on engine performance. Other design or operating characteristics and working fluid …
