Effects Of Elevated Temperature On The Physical Aging Of A High Temperature Thermoplastic Resin And Composite, Mark Feldman Jul 1996

Effects Of Elevated Temperature On The Physical Aging Of A High Temperature Thermoplastic Resin And Composite, Mark Feldman

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Development of a High Speed Civil Transport is considered by the commercial aviation industry to be one of the next big challenges for our national aircraft industry. Critical to the success of this aircraft is the development of advanced polymeric composites for both the primary and secondary structures and the predictive methodology necessary for assessment of long term durability. While polymeric composites offer an excellent strength to weight ratio a key disadvantage is the time dependent properties exhibited by the polymer matrix which can age and ultimately effect the resultant stiffness of a laminate.

Experimental studies were performed to determine …

Comprehensive Conjunctive-Use Management Of Connected Surface Water Groundwater Systems Using Stochastic Inputs And Uncertainties, Seshadri Suryanarayana Jul 1996

Comprehensive Conjunctive-Use Management Of Connected Surface Water Groundwater Systems Using Stochastic Inputs And Uncertainties, Seshadri Suryanarayana

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A comprehensive conjunctive-use management model is developed. The dynamics of flow and solute transport processes in connected surface water groundwater systems are integrated by a dual programming management model. The governing aquifer flow parameters and streamflows are treated as stochastic random processes. Multiple realizations of the random field are generated and are explicitly incorporated in a non-linear optimization model along with other system, environmental, and management constraints. To facilitate management of large aquifer systems, a linked simulation-optimization approach is used. The simulation program generates the response matrices for flow and transport processes. The management model then determines optimal well discharges …

Reaction Based Grasp Force Assignment, Mark W. Hunter Jul 1996

Reaction Based Grasp Force Assignment, Mark W. Hunter

Theses and Dissertations

An iterative method is developed by which the contact forces required to apply an arbitrary wrench (six elements of force and moment) to a stably grasped object may be calculated quickly. The assignment of contact forces, given a required object wrench, is accomplished with the use of fuzzy logic. This concept is referred to as the fuzzy logic reactive system (FLRS). The solution is versatile with respect to goals inherent in the rulebase and the input parameters, and is also applicable for an arbitrary number of contacts. The goal presented in this research, to illustrate the concept of the FLRS, …

Surface Modification Of Titanium Foil Substrates In Experimental Solar Cells, Richard Nishimuro, Omar S. Es-Said

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works

A case study involving surface smoothing of titanium foil was obtained from a solar cell research company. It was believed that the rougher surface of metals was responsible for low solar cell efficiency when using titanium foil rather than glass as a substrate. A method was needed to reduce the surface asperity height of the titanium foil from the existing 1 μm to less than 0.1 μm. Several methods were investigated. The recommended method was the use of an excimer laser, a laser powered by excited noble gas-halide molecules as a lasing medium.

On The Excessive Porosity In The Welds Of Ams 4975 Titanium Air Compressor Rotor Duct, Stefanie Roberts, Rachel Hoang, Laura Pate, Joseph Foyos, Richard Nishimuro, Omar S. Es-Said

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works

This case study deals with the existence of excessive porosity in the welds of an air compressor rotor duct. The duct does not meet the testing criteria because the diameters of the pores in the weld exceeded allowable specifications. As such, the duct failed inspection for excessive pore diameter and shrinkage due to welding. At this point, the part was beyond repair, and it was scrapped. The possible causes of failure were analyzed, and it was concluded that the source of the problem was the welding technique.

Demonstration Of Cooling Savings Of Light Colored Roof Surfacing In Florida Commercial Buildings: Our Savior's School, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Architects and designers have long known that light-colored building roofs can reduce cooling needs. Recently, monitoring studies in Florida have made an effort to quantify these savings. Experiments in existing residences have shown that a white reflective roof can reduce cooling requirements by an average of 20%. However, until now there has been no investigation in Florida's climate to examine the potential in commercial scale buildings.

To remedy this need, a two year study was performed on a private elementary school building in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Our Savior's Elementary School was monitored for an entire year in a base line …

Modeling Of Macroscopic/Microscopic Transport Phenomena In Zeolite Crystal Solutions Under Microgravity Conditions, Andreas Alexandrou, Nikos A. Gatsonis, William W. Durgin, Albert Sacco, Jr.

Office of the Provost Scholarship

Crystals grown from special liquid solutions find important industrial applications. Most often the physics and chemistry of the growth processes are not well understood due to complex microscopic chemical and thermo-fluid phenomena. Microgravity could help elucidate these phenomena and allow the control of defect concentration and crystal size. We are proposing to study zeolites grown in silica solutions as a typical crystal growth system. By using macroscopic fluid dynamics, coupled with first-principle microscopic fluid physics and advanced particle simulations, we will study: (a) the effect of transport phenomena and nutrient flow under microgravity conditions along with (b) the nucleation process …

Global Fuzzy Control Based On Cell Mapping, Tea-Quin Kim May 1996

Global Fuzzy Control Based On Cell Mapping, Tea-Quin Kim

Dissertations

Cell mapping methods can generate global optimal controls for nonlinear dynamic systems. However, the implementation of this approach for on-line control is difficult due to its use of a table-based controller which requires a large amount of memory.

In this dissertation, a cell mapping based systematic method is developed to construct a fuzzy controller to replace the table-based controller for global optimal control of dynamic systems. The method consists of four steps: 1) An optimal control table is generated using a cell mapping algorithm. 2) The cells are linked into trajectories to characterize the optimal dynamic evolution of various cell. …

Reduction Of Inertia-Induced Forces In A General Spatial Mechanism, Sahidur Rahman May 1996

Reduction Of Inertia-Induced Forces In A General Spatial Mechanism, Sahidur Rahman

Dissertations

A computer-aided design procedure has been developed for minimizing the adverse effects of the inertia-induced forces by optimum mass redistribution amongst the links of high speed general spatial linkages. The evaluation of an optimality criterion for the mass redistribution of the mechanism will be carried out with the aid of a quadratic programming technique. This has been found to be successful in minimizing inertia induced forces and torques. The validity of the optimization procedure will be demonstrated by application to one kind of spatial linkage.

No literature has been found on the balancing of a general spatial mechanism, since its …

Relay Ladder Logic And Petri Nets For Discrete Event Control Design : A Comparative Study, Edward Twiss May 1996

Relay Ladder Logic And Petri Nets For Discrete Event Control Design : A Comparative Study, Edward Twiss

Theses

In the 1960's and earlier discrete event systems (DES) were controlled by hardwired electromechanical relay systems. In 1969 an electronic programmable logic controller (PLC) was introduced. PLC's have been programmed utilizing relay ladder logic (RLL). RLL is a graphical programming language with software "devices" used to emulate electromechanical devices. RLL programs, however, often become large and difficult to understand because its graphical representation of physical switching devices obscures the discrete event dynamics inherent in the process to be controlled. Petri nets are a methodology for modeling discrete event systems (DES). Using a Petri net based controller, a control strategy could …

In response to a natural disaster, photovoltaic (solar electric) modules offer a source of quite, safe, pollution-free electrical power. Photovoltaic (PV) power systems are capable of providing the electrical needs for vaccine refrigerators, microscopes, medical equipment, lighting, radios, …

Coupling And Attenuation Of Waves In Plates By Randomly Distributed Attached Impedances, Joseph A. Turner, Richard L. Weaver Apr 1996

Coupling And Attenuation Of Waves In Plates By Randomly Distributed Attached Impedances, Joseph A. Turner, Richard L. Weaver

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

The average response of an infinite thin plate with statistically homogeneous attached random impedances is examined. The added impedances, which represent typical heterogeneities that might occur on complex shells, provide light coupling between the extensional, shear, and flexural waves. The mean plate response is formulated in terms of the Dyson equation which is solved within the assumptions of the first-order smoothing approximation, or Keller approximation, valid when the heterogeneities are weak. Scattering attenuations are derived for each propagation mode. It is shown that the attenuation of one wave type due to coupling to another is proportional to the modal density …
