System Identification And Control Of Cavity Noise Reduction, Chien-Hsun Kuo Apr 1998

System Identification And Control Of Cavity Noise Reduction, Chien-Hsun Kuo

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation first presents indirect closed-loop system identification through residual whitening, then identifies the cavity noise system and applies controllers to reduce the noise. High speed air flow over the cavity produces a complex oscillatory flow-field and induces pressure oscillations within the cavity. The existence of cavities induces large pressure fluctuations which generate undesirable and loud noise. This may have an adverse effect on the objects, such as reducing the stability and performance of overall system, or damaging the sensitive instruments within the cavity.

System identification is the process of building mathematical models of dynamical systems based on the available …

Inversion And Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Atmospheric Water Vapor Measurements At 940nm, Jack Cutler Larsen Apr 1998

Inversion And Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Atmospheric Water Vapor Measurements At 940nm, Jack Cutler Larsen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The understanding and acceptance of remotely sensed atmospheric data depends strongly on the steps taken to characterize experiment error and validate observations through comparisons to other independent measurements. A formal error analysis of the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment II (SAGE II) water vapor operational inversion algorithm is performed and compared to previous results. Random measurement errors were characterized by segmented least-squares profile fitting of the slant path absorption which found the error to be uncorrelated in the stratosphere with estimated variances significantly smaller than expected from 18-30 km. Estimates of null space error were developed from radiosonde hygrometers in …

Ir-Hot Gas Heat Source For Automated Tow Placement, Ray Walton Grenoble Apr 1998

Ir-Hot Gas Heat Source For Automated Tow Placement, Ray Walton Grenoble

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A series of five experiments on the NASA Langley automated tow placement robot revealed stagnation of gas flow in the nip region. Since the torches could not heat effectively in the nip region, the roller temperature was the dominant influence on interlaminar bond strength. The roller temperatures required for high bond strength caused resin and fiber on the panel top surface to adhere to the compaction roller. Resin and fiber was pulled from the panel surface and wrapped around the roller, which was a severe processing problem. A supplemental radiant heat source was designed to permit reductions in roller temperature. …

Building Lms Adaptive Filters With Register-Based Fpgas, Li Ding Apr 1998

Building Lms Adaptive Filters With Register-Based Fpgas, Li Ding

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, an 8-bit least mean squares (LMS) adaptive digital filter with 16 coefficients is implemented on a single FPGA, using the MaxPlus+2 design environment. The system is constructed as a hierarchical structure, using four different levels of design hierarchy. Subdesigns at each level of the hierarchy project are complied, fitted and simulated to test and verify their functional correctness. The complete system is tested and verified by checking the MaxPlus+2 simulator results against fixed-point integer arithmetic simulations written in Matlab. The resulting adaptive filter is subsequently mapped to the Alters FLEX I OK20TC144-3 device, resulting in a 14,500 …

Material Evaluation By Pulsed Diode Laser Optoacoustics, Xiaodong Xu Apr 1998

Material Evaluation By Pulsed Diode Laser Optoacoustics, Xiaodong Xu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Pulsed diode laser optoacoustic diagnostics were carried out to characterize solid sample materials. The apparatus developed is compact, portable, cost-effective and therefore very promising for both industrial as well as laboratory applications. To our knowledge, this is the first time that optoacoustic characterization and measurement have been performed with a diode laser. The method was successfully applied to measure the thickness of a multilayer structure non-intrusively. Internal cracks of the material were detected by this technique.

A theory for optoacoustic signal generation, propagation and detection is given. A numerical analysis technique is developed to solve for the expected signal. In …

Diophantinized Fractional Representations For Nonlinear Elastomeric Media, Joe Padovan, Jerzy T. Sawicki Mar 1998

Diophantinized Fractional Representations For Nonlinear Elastomeric Media, Joe Padovan, Jerzy T. Sawicki

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper explores the use of diophantinized fractional fits for the nonlinear constitutive representation of elastomeric media. These are caste in terms of either the principal stretches or the strain invariants. Both polynomial and rational forms are considered. To construct the requisite complete and physically admissible basis space, the diophantinized set of fractional powers is bound by the curvature properties of the experimental data set. This set is then employed in conjunction with a remezed least square scheme to obtain an optimal fit. To verify the scheme a sample application case is presented.

Determination Of The Asymmetry Parameter And Scattering Coefficient Of Turbid Media From Spatially Resolved Reflectance Measurments, Matthew R. Jones, Yukio Yamada Mar 1998

Determination Of The Asymmetry Parameter And Scattering Coefficient Of Turbid Media From Spatially Resolved Reflectance Measurments, Matthew R. Jones, Yukio Yamada

Faculty Publications

We present a technique for determining the asymmetry parameter and scattering coefficient of turbid media from spatially resolved reflectance measurements. This technique will contribute to the development of medical applications in which it is necessary to predict the distribution and propagation of light in tissue. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, we derived correlations which relate the reduced scattering coefficient and the asymmetry parameter to the relative reflectance curve. Initial estimates of the optical properties are obtained from these correlations. Final values are obtained by adjusting the optical parameters and repeating the Monte Carlo simulations until the simulated reflectance pattern matches …

Three-Dimensional Dynamic Analysis Of Wheelchair Propulsion, Mary M. Rodgers, Srinivas Tummarakota, Junghsen Lieh Feb 1998

Three-Dimensional Dynamic Analysis Of Wheelchair Propulsion, Mary M. Rodgers, Srinivas Tummarakota, Junghsen Lieh

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

A three-dimensional (3-D) inverse dynamic model of wheelchair propulsion was developed using the Newton-Euler method based on body coordinate systems. With this model, the arm was assumed to be three rigid segments (hand, forearm, and upper arm) connected by the wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints. A symbolic method was adopted to generate the equations of motion. The model was used to compute the joint forces and moments based on the inputs obtained from a 3-D motion analysis system, which included an instrumented wheelchair, video cameras, and a data acquisition system. The linear displacements of markers placed on the joints were …

Determination Of Bumper Styling And Engineering Parameters To Reduce Pedestrian Leg Injuries, Peter J. Schuster, Bradley Staines Feb 1998

Determination Of Bumper Styling And Engineering Parameters To Reduce Pedestrian Leg Injuries, Peter J. Schuster, Bradley Staines

Mechanical Engineering

The European Commission is proposing legislation aimed at reducing the severity of injuries sustained by pedestrians in the event of an impact with the front-end of a motor vehicle. One aspect of this proposed legislation is reducing the pedestrian's leg injuries due to contact with the bumper and frontal surfaces of a vehicle, assessed using a 'pedestrian leg impact device,' or 'leg-form.'

This proposed legislation presents the challenge of designing a bumper system which achieves the required performance in the leg-form impact-without sacrificing the bumper's primary function of vehicle protection during low-speed impacts. The first step in meeting this challenge …

Numerical Study Of Three-Dimensional Free Convection From Semi-Enclosed Geometry And Discontinuous Heat Sources, Aklilu T.G. Giorges Jan 1998

Numerical Study Of Three-Dimensional Free Convection From Semi-Enclosed Geometry And Discontinuous Heat Sources, Aklilu T.G. Giorges

Dissertations

Three-dimensional natural convection from three-by-three array of isoflux heat sources mounted on one vertical wall of semi-enclosed region has been numerically investigated. Detailed thermal information of this important engineering configuration is currently not available. The major objective of this study was to obtain this needed thermal and velocity information.

The semi-enclosed geometry can be viewed as a thin rectangular region with four closed and two open sides. The open surfaces are located at the top and adjacent side. For the fluid air, Pr = 0.71, the study covered a heat flux based Rayleigh number (Ra) range of (102 ≤ …

Dynamic Friction Measurement, Modeling, And Compensation For Precise Motion Control, Simon Cohn Jan 1998

Dynamic Friction Measurement, Modeling, And Compensation For Precise Motion Control, Simon Cohn

Theses

In this thesis, measurements of dynamic friction in a hydrodynamic journal bearing were performed for varying sinusoidal velocity excitations, loads, and lubricants. The results indicate that the friction data displays a negative slope in the mixed region of friction vs. velocity (f-v) curves, and also shows that the dynamic friction is not just a function of current velocity, but also a function of velocity history (hysteresis). These results are in agreement with previous experimental investigations by other investigators in lubricated friction.

Secondly, a dynamic friction model is fully explored and partially extended to provide quantitative agreement to measured friction values. …

Parameter Optimization For Curl Distortion In Building Parts Using 3-D Laser Stereolithography, Laurel A. Hanesian Jan 1998

Parameter Optimization For Curl Distortion In Building Parts Using 3-D Laser Stereolithography, Laurel A. Hanesian

Theses

The curl distortions in rapid prototyping using 3-D laser stereo lithography occur as the top layers shrink after being drawn and attaching to the bottom layers. The amount of curl is dependent upon the how much shrinkage the layer has finished prior to adhesion. It is also dependent on how deep the cure of the top layer amounts to as it adheres into the bottom layer. This thesis investigated the effect of build parameters on the distortions associated with the diagnostic 'Letter-H' shaped test part. The same parameters were also considered in a time optimization study, using calculated, predicted results …

Kinematic Analysis Of A Swash-Plate Mechanism Using Transformation Matrices, David Edgar Evans Jan 1998

Kinematic Analysis Of A Swash-Plate Mechanism Using Transformation Matrices, David Edgar Evans

Theses

The swash-plate mechanism is used to transfer rotational motion into translational motion and vice versa. Using transformation matrices to describe each joint, the displacements of the swash-plate mechanism were analyzed. The general transformation matrix model for the plane joint, not previously developed using transformation matrices, was presented. The solution was tested using a computer program. Examples of three different swash-plate angles; 10, 45, and 25' were considered. The solution was found to agree with previous solutions while offering a more complete description of the mechanism. Future work in this area could include a complete static, velocity, and/or dynamic analysis of …

Optimal Synthesis Of A Planar Four-Bar Function Generator Based On Imderect Measure Of Structural Error, Robert Ellis Jan 1998

Optimal Synthesis Of A Planar Four-Bar Function Generator Based On Imderect Measure Of Structural Error, Robert Ellis

Theses

A novel technique for optimal synthesis of a planar four-bar function generator is presented. An indirect measure of structural error is used to formulate an objective function which, along with its derivatives, is straightforward to evaluate and results in an elegant and robust algorithm. Lagrange multipliers are used to incorporate the loop closure constraint into the objective function.

In this thesis, the formulation of the objective function and the minimization algorithm are described, examples are presented, and the virtues and shortcomings of the algorithm are discussed.

Leaking Electricity: Individual Field Measurement Of Consumer Electronics, Florida Solar Energy Center, David Floyd Jan 1998

Leaking Electricity: Individual Field Measurement Of Consumer Electronics, Florida Solar Energy Center, David Floyd

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Leaking electricity or "parasitic load" is energy wasted by electronic devices when they are not performing any useful function, typically in an "off" or "standby" state. Before this study, little was known about the magnitude or source of this waste. While whole house losses have been estimated to be approximately 50 watts, little data has been available to quantify energy waste from individual loads. This paper summarizes measurements of over 600 consumer electronic devices taken by researchers at both the Florida Solar Energy Center and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Combined they form the largest data set of consumer electronic loads …

Daylighting: Measuring The Performance Of Light Shelves And Occupant-Controlled Blinds On A Dimmed Lighting System, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker Jan 1998

Daylighting: Measuring The Performance Of Light Shelves And Occupant-Controlled Blinds On A Dimmed Lighting System, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The design of a daylighted space is both an art and a science. The biggest challenge facing the lighting designer is to admit only as much light as necessary and distribute it evenly throughout the space without introducing glare or heat. In warm climates such as Florida, it has become common practice in windowed spaces to specify blinds and glazing with high shading coefficients to control glare and minimize heat gain. However, this practice reduces the effectiveness of lighting systems that dim automatically. Improved systems are needed to capture natural daylight and distribute it uniformly throughout a space while controlling …

The Restoration Of A Wwii Avenger Provides Projects For Wpi Students, Donald N. Zwiep, William W. Durgin, Nathan H. Mayo Jan 1998

The Restoration Of A Wwii Avenger Provides Projects For Wpi Students, Donald N. Zwiep, William W. Durgin, Nathan H. Mayo

Office of the Provost Scholarship

In 1970 WPI completely revised its traditional approach to engineering education. The resulting program, the WPI Plan, emphasized the use of projects as a distinctive process for achieving educational goals. Every student, as a degree requirement, had to successfully complete two major projects: one in a student's major field, the Major Qualifying Project (MQP) and the second, the Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP), which related science and technology to societal issues.

The IQP's related to the restoration of the WWII Avenger at Mayocraft, Inc. for the Collings Foundation in Stow, Massachusetts enabled the students working with the authors as advisors to …

Lateral Resistance Of Ring-Shank Nail Connections In Southern Pine Lumber, R D. Theilen, D A. Bender, David Pollock, S G. Winistorfer Jan 1998

Lateral Resistance Of Ring-Shank Nail Connections In Southern Pine Lumber, R D. Theilen, D A. Bender, David Pollock, S G. Winistorfer

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Ring-shank nails are used in engineered structures with lateral connection design values based on theoretically derived equations which were validated only for common nails. The goal of this study was to quantify the input parameters and lateral connection strength of several types of ring-shank nails in Southern Pine lumber and critically evaluate the applicability of the theoretical equations for ring-shank nails.

Two sizes of galvanized and ungalvanized, hardened steel ring-shank nails from two manufacturers were studied. The hardened, ring-shank nails carried significantly higher loads than the common wire nails studied. Because the current method of determining yield load does not …

Personal Reflections On Psi In Engineering Mechanics, David Haws Jan 1998

Personal Reflections On Psi In Engineering Mechanics, David Haws

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

There seems to be little argument that our students need to be encouraged toward educational selfdirectedness. Yet self-direction must be based on past learning success and present learning readiness. There is at least a potential conflict here: students needs to assume responsibility for their own education, directing it to topics of their own choosing, but their learning must also at least occasionally be directed along a hierarchical path of sequentially dependent learning objectives (which path may not be so obvious to the uninitiated). The Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) seems to enable both of these not-always-compatible goals. PSI allows the …

Chemical Kinetic Modeling Of A Methane Opposed-Flow Diffusion Flame And Comparison To Experiments, N. M. Marinov, W. J. Pitz, C. K. Westbrook, Andrew E. Lutz, A. M. Vincitore, S. M. Senkan

All Faculty Presentations - School of Engineering and Computer Science

The chemical structure of an opposed-flow, methane diffusion flame is studied using a chemical kinetic model and the results are compared with experimental measurements. The chemical kinetic paths leading to aromatics and polycyclic aromatics hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the diffusion flame are identified. These paths all involve resonantly stabilized radicals that include propargyl, allyl, cyclopentadienyl, and benzyl radicals. The modeling results show reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements for the large hydrocarbon aliphatic compounds, aromatics, two-ring PAHs, and three-ring PAHs, but not for four-ring PAHs. The benzene was predicted to be formed primarily by the reaction sequence of Allyl + Propargyl …

Battery-Operated Atomic Force Microscope, Burford J. Furman, J. Christman, M. Kearny, F. Wojcik, M. Tortonese

Faculty Publications, Mechanical Engineering

The design of a battery-operated atomic force microscope (AFM) using a piezoresistive cantilever is described. The AFM is designed so that all power to drive the scanning tube and detection electronics comes from a self-contained battery. The prototype AFM uses a 6 V, Ni–Cd, camcorder battery, however, any battery that supplies between 6 and 12 V may be used. Scanner control and data acquisition are implemented using commercially available software running on an external computer. The prototype AFM achieves a scan area of 53 by 53 μm, consumes 1.8 W of power, and can scan continuously for about 7 h …

Building Cavities Used As Ducts: Air Leakage Characteristics And Impacts In Light Commercial Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, James Cummings

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Field testing in 70 small commercial buildings in central Florida identified that building cavities were used as part of the air distribution system in 33 buildings. The various building cavity types (# of buildings in parentheses) are: enclosed air handler support platforms (10), mechanical closets (8), mechanical rooms (6), ceiling spaces (7), wall cavities (6), chases (1), and "other" building cavities (2). Testing found that these building cavities are considerably more leaky than standard ducts and plenums because they are generally not built to the same airtightness standard as ducts. Actual air leakage is a function not only of duct …
