Florida Photovoltaic Buildings Program: Mounting Methods For Rooftop Photovoltaic Arrays Shingle, Tile, And Metal Roofing Systems, Florida Solar Energy Center, Gerard Ventre Feb 1999

Florida Photovoltaic Buildings Program: Mounting Methods For Rooftop Photovoltaic Arrays Shingle, Tile, And Metal Roofing Systems, Florida Solar Energy Center, Gerard Ventre

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The decision to install a PV array on a rooftop should be followed by the questions where, what, and how. Site selection determines where the array will be installed. The system design provides details on what hardware will be used; and the selected mounting method determines how the array will be attached to the roof.

Investigation Of Thermal Contact Resistance At A Plastic-Metal Interface In Injection Molding, Lakshminarayanan Sridhar Jan 1999

Investigation Of Thermal Contact Resistance At A Plastic-Metal Interface In Injection Molding, Lakshminarayanan Sridhar

Dissertations

Thermal contact resistance (TCR) at the plastic-metal interface is one of the parameters required for the simulation of plastic processing techniques such as injection molding. However, the available data is both unreliable and insufficient due to the difficulties involved in measuring this parameter. The effects of thermal contact resistance on the heat transfer in plastics processing with particular reference to injection molding of thermoplastics is investigated using combined experimental measurement techniques, parametric studies and numerical analysis.

TCR under steady state conditions has been determined experimentally at typical thermoplastic-mold metal interfaces for an amorphous and a semi-crystalline polymer using a one-dimensional …

System Simulation And Modeling Of Electronics Demanufacturing Facilities, Ketan Giridhar Limaye Jan 1999

System Simulation And Modeling Of Electronics Demanufacturing Facilities, Ketan Giridhar Limaye

Theses

Over the last decade, pressure on the electronic industry has been increasing as concerns for product take-back, product stewardship and global warming have continued to grow. Various end-of-life management options are being expanded including recycling to recapture values from basic materials through reengineering and recovery of subassemblies and individual components for remanufacturing. While progress has been reported on life cycle assessment (LCA), disassembly planning, design for disassembly, and design for environment (DFE), very little research has been focused on demanufacturing from a systems perspective.

The objective of this thesis is to build an interface between the user who knows the …

Evaluation Of Rotating Fluidized Bed As A Dry Coater, William Christopher Dunphy Jan 1999

Evaluation Of Rotating Fluidized Bed As A Dry Coater, William Christopher Dunphy

Theses

Coating of particles is normally carried out with the use of environmentally unfriendly solvents. Development of dry coating methods is therefore quite important.

A Rotating Fluidized Bed was constructed, instrumented and verified as to operation. Twelve coating experiments were carried out with PMMA 200μm mean diameter as host and alumina 0.25μm primary particle size as guest with the RFB being operated in the fully fluidized range.

In all analyzed samples, coating was observed. Analysis was carried out on the qualitative basis by SEM and EDX.

Worn Tool Forces Based On Ploughing Stresses, Daniel Waldorf, Shiv G. Kapoor, Richard E. Devor Jan 1999

Worn Tool Forces Based On Ploughing Stresses, Daniel Waldorf, Shiv G. Kapoor, Richard E. Devor

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Recent work in modeling of the ploughing mechanism in basic metal machining may provide a means of estimating the additional forces to be expected when cutting with a worn tool. The results predict the rubbing stresses due to the finite radius of an unworn tool edge. Since an unworn tool can be thought of as a worn tool with a wear land width VB = 0, these stresses can make up part of a strategy for predicting the additional forces incurred by a worn tool. This paper develops a wear model by proposing a technique for utilizing the stresses predicted …

Bolt Bearing Behavior Of Engineered Wood Composites, Stephen J. Carstens, David Pollock Jan 1999

Bolt Bearing Behavior Of Engineered Wood Composites, Stephen J. Carstens, David Pollock

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

The goal of this research was to gain a better understanding of the bolt bearing behavior of engineered wood composites made from yellow poplar lumber. Lumber specimens included in this study were laminated veneer lumber, strandbased lumber, yellow poplar lumber, and Douglas-fir larch lumber. Testing followed the half-hole and full-hole configuration as set forth in ASTM Standard D5764 (1998).

In a previous study by Wilkinson (1991), a strong correlation was shown between bearing strength perpendicular to grain and bolt diameter. This study supports Wilkinson's finding for bearing strength perpendicular-to-grain based on the half hole test configuration. Other findings in this …

Analysis Of Ductile To Cleavage Transition In Part-Through Cracks Using The Cell Model Incorporating Statistics, Xiaosheng Gao, J. Faleskog, C. Fong Shih Jan 1999

Analysis Of Ductile To Cleavage Transition In Part-Through Cracks Using The Cell Model Incorporating Statistics, Xiaosheng Gao, J. Faleskog, C. Fong Shih

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

This paper describes an approach to study ductile/cleavage transition in ferritic steels using the methodology of a cell model for ductile tearing incorporating weakest link statistics. The model takes into account the constraint effects and puts no restriction on the extent of plastic deformation or amount of ductile tearing preceding cleavage failure. The parameters associated with the statistical model are calibrated using experimental cleavage fracture toughness data, and the effect of threshold stress on predicted cleavage fracture probability is investigated. The issue of two approaches to compute Weibull stress, the ‘history approach’ and the ‘current approach’, is also addressed. The …

The Presence Of Edge Contact And Its Influence On The Debonding Of Patched Panels, Anette M. Karlsson, W. J. Bottega Jan 1999

The Presence Of Edge Contact And Its Influence On The Debonding Of Patched Panels, Anette M. Karlsson, W. J. Bottega

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A formulation is presented which accounts for configurations of debonding patched cylindrical panels for which the edge of the debonded segment of the patch maintains sliding contact with the corresponding base structure. The formulation is incorporated with that which accounts for configurations for which a contact zone is present and for which no contact between the debonded segments of the patch and base structure occurs during debonding. Analyses are performed for two types of loading conditions: Applied circumferential tension and applied internal pressure. Results of numerical simulations based on analytical solutions of the problems of interest are presented in the …

Online Identification And Control Of Aerospace Vehicles Using Recurrent Networks, Zhenning Hu, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 1999

Online Identification And Control Of Aerospace Vehicles Using Recurrent Networks, Zhenning Hu, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Methods for estimating the aerospace system parameters and controlling them through two neural networks are presented in this study. We equate the energy function of Hopfield neural network to integral square of errors in the system dynamics and extract the parameters of a system. Parameter convergence is proved. For control, we equate the equilibrium status of a "modified" Hopfield neural network to the steady state Riccati solution with the system parameters as inputs. Through these two networks, we present the online identification and control of an aircraft using its nonlinear dynamics.

Combining Wavelets And Hotelling Transforms In Image Query, Sol Neeman Ph.D. Jan 1999

Combining Wavelets And Hotelling Transforms In Image Query, Sol Neeman Ph.D.

Engineering Studies Faculty Publications and Creative Works

In the "content based" image query, also referred to as "query by example," "similarity retrieval" or "sketch retrieval," the query image is provided by the user either as a sketch of the object, as the output of a scanner or a video camera. Some of the difficulties associated with content based image query are described in [1], e.g. significant difference between the "query image" and the "target image," artifacts and poor resolution of the query image make a straightforward comparison of images using L1 and l2 metrics not effective.

In [2] a new strategy is suggested based on wavelet decomposition …

The Integrated Systems Engineering Laboratory- An Innovative Approach To Vertical Integration Using Modern Instrumentation, Ajay Mahajan, Maurice Walworth, David Mcdonald, Kevin Scmaltz Jan 1999

The Integrated Systems Engineering Laboratory- An Innovative Approach To Vertical Integration Using Modern Instrumentation, Ajay Mahajan, Maurice Walworth, David Mcdonald, Kevin Scmaltz

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

The current paradigm in engineering course instruction builds on a lecture prerequisite structure but ignores the need for a laboratory prerequisite structure. Educational quality is therefore diminished as instructors optimize specific laboratories but fail to optimize the overall program laboratory experience. This paper presents a learning environment based on modern instrumentation that forces students to use not only concepts and skills acquired from the lecture, but also actual data and models acquired from lower division laboratories, in upper division laboratories. The vertical integration occurs because students must utilize their previous laboratory work as a reference and/or building blocks as they …

Design, Optimization, And The Prototyping Of A Small Tuning-Fork Ultrasonic Piezoelectric Linear Motor, Daniel S. Stutts, James R. Friend Jan 1999

Design, Optimization, And The Prototyping Of A Small Tuning-Fork Ultrasonic Piezoelectric Linear Motor, Daniel S. Stutts, James R. Friend

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The design, optimization, and properties of a prototype small traveling-wave ultrasonic piezoelectric linear motor design are described. A method for optimizing the geometry of the motor to maximize its mechanical output for a given electrical input is described, as is the inherent properties of the design to maximize the motors durability and utilization of the piezoelectric material. Results from testing the motor demonstrate the design and indicate a maximum speed of 2.5 cm/s with a preload of 16 g due to an applied voltage of 80 V/RMS/ at an applied current of 15 mA.

Spin-Up In A Tank Induced By A Rotating Bluff Body, R. Daniel Maynes, J. Klewicki, P. Mcmurty Jan 1999

Spin-Up In A Tank Induced By A Rotating Bluff Body, R. Daniel Maynes, J. Klewicki, P. Mcmurty

Faculty Publications

Spin-up of a turbulent flow in a cylindrical tank caused by a rotating bluff body has been investigated using flow visualization, fluid velocity measurements, and hydrodynamic torque measurements. During the spin-up process three distinct temporal regimes exist. These regimes are: (i) a build-up regime where the torque and the tangential velocity fluctuations in the close proximity of the body remain constant; (ii) a decay regime where these quantities decay with power-law relations; and (iii) a mean flow steady state where these values remain relatively constant. Experiments were conducted in two tanks differing in volume by a factor of 80 and …

Hypersonic Drag And Heat Transfer Reduction Using A Forward Facing Jet, Benjamin Meyer, Harlan F. Nelson, David W. Riggins Jan 1999

Hypersonic Drag And Heat Transfer Reduction Using A Forward Facing Jet, Benjamin Meyer, Harlan F. Nelson, David W. Riggins

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A two-dimensional numerical study of the effects of a forward-facing jet located at the stagnation point of a blunt body on wave drag, heat transfer, and skin friction drag is presented for Mach 6.5 flow at 30 km altitude. The full Navier-Stokes equations are used with variable viscosity and thermal conductivity. It is shown that upstream injection can significantly modify the flow field. If the jet conditions are chosen properly, large reductions in drag and heat transfer can be obtained resulting in possible increases in the volumetric efficiency and static stability of aircraft and reductions in heating protection requirements for …

Functional Interdependence And Product Similarity Based On Customer Needs, Daniel A. Mcadams, Robert B. Stone, Kristin L. Wood Jan 1999

Functional Interdependence And Product Similarity Based On Customer Needs, Daniel A. Mcadams, Robert B. Stone, Kristin L. Wood

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, related product functions are determined for a group of approximately 70 consumer products. Using customer need data, a new matrix approach is introduced to identify these relationships. Techniques are then created for determining product similarity. These techniques are clarified and validated through three case studies, including beverage brewers and material-removal products. The results of these case studies are argued to have significant impact on design-by-analogy procedures, benchmarking methods, mass customization strategies and modular design. The paper concludes with a discussion of applications and related procedures for product development.

A New Reflection Free Boundary In Uniform Flow Using Mapped Infinite Wave Envelope Elements, Walter Eversman, Indranil Danda Roy Jan 1999

A New Reflection Free Boundary In Uniform Flow Using Mapped Infinite Wave Envelope Elements, Walter Eversman, Indranil Danda Roy

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Variable order mapped infinite wave envelope elements are developed for finite element modeling of acoustic radiation in a uniformly moving medium. These elements can be used outside of the near field as a non-reflecting boundary condition for computations on an infinite domain in which a radiating body is immersed in a moving medium. Mapped infinite wave envelope elements provide a boundary condition equivalent to stiffness, mass, and damping matrices appended to the inner mesh. A demonstration of the characteristics of the mapped infinite wave envelope elements is given in the context of acoustic radiation from a turbofan inlet for which …

Computation Of Flame Base Height Of A Turbulent Diffusion Flame Resulting From A Methane Jet, A. S. Kheireddine, S. K. Chaturvedi, T. O. Mohieldin Jan 1999

Computation Of Flame Base Height Of A Turbulent Diffusion Flame Resulting From A Methane Jet, A. S. Kheireddine, S. K. Chaturvedi, T. O. Mohieldin

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

This work summarizes numerical results for a diffusion flame formed from a cylindrical tube fuel injector, issuing a gaseous methane jet vertically in a quiescent atmosphere. The primary objective is to predict the flame base height and other flame characteristics as a function of the fuel jet velocity. A finite volume scheme is used to discretize the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for the reacting flow resulting from the turbulent fuel jet motion. The turbulent stresses, and heat and mass fluxes are computed from a Reynolds stress turbulence model. A chemical kinetics model involving two-step chemistry is employed for the oxidation of …
