Performance Of Interface Elements In The Finite Element Method, Kairas Rabadi Jan 2004

Performance Of Interface Elements In The Finite Element Method, Kairas Rabadi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to assess the performance of interface elements in the finite element method. Interface elements are implemented in the finite element codes such as MSC.NASTRAN, which is used in this study. Interface elements in MSC.NASTRAN provide a tool to transition between a shell-meshed region to another shell-meshed region as well as from a shell-meshed region to a solid-meshed region. Often, in practice shell elements are layered on shell elements or on solid elements without the use of interface elements. This is potentially inaccurate arising in mismatched degrees of freedom. In the case of a shell-to-shell …

Ground-Source Heat Pumps In Ireland: Heat Transfer Experimentation For The Design And Modelling Of A Sub-Slab Installation., Sarah O'Connell Jan 2004

Ground-Source Heat Pumps In Ireland: Heat Transfer Experimentation For The Design And Modelling Of A Sub-Slab Installation., Sarah O'Connell

Theses

Ground-source heat pump technology is currently undergoing rapid growth in Ireland. Three aspects of ground-source heat pumps have been studied in this thesis. The market expansion taking place in Ireland, heat transfer from the soil to the pipe of a ground- source heat pump collector, and the design of an innovative sub-slab ground-source heat pump system.

Initial investigations into the use of ground-source heat pumps in Ireland revealed surprising growth in the use of the technology. There have been approximately 1500 systems installed mainly since 2000. The ground-source heat pump market in Ireland has an estimated annual growth rate of …

Metal Transfer In Arc Welding, Hai-Lung Tsai, P.-C. Wang Jan 2004

Metal Transfer In Arc Welding, Hai-Lung Tsai, P.-C. Wang

The Frequency Distribution Of Quantization Error In Digitizers For Coherent Sampling, Sol Neeman Ph.D. Jan 2004

The Frequency Distribution Of Quantization Error In Digitizers For Coherent Sampling, Sol Neeman Ph.D.

Engineering Studies Faculty Publications and Creative Works

In this paper the frequency distribution of quantization error in coherent sampling of digitizers will be investigated. As the distribution of the quantization error affects the values of THD and SNR, it is relevant for a correct interpretation of THD and SNR of sine waves in coherent sampling. The distribution of the quantization error will be analyzed as a function of N, total number of samples and M, number of cycles in the sample set and it will be proved that for certain cases, the quantization error falls on odd harmonics only of the frequency of the sampled sine wave.

Understanding Manufacturing Energy Use Through Statistical Analysis, J. Kelly Kissock, John Seryak Jan 2004

Understanding Manufacturing Energy Use Through Statistical Analysis, J. Kelly Kissock, John Seryak

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Energy in manufacturing facilities is used for direct production of goods, space conditioning, and general facility support such as lighting. This paper presents a methodology for statistically analyzing plant energy use in terms of these major end uses. The methodology uses as few as 60 data points that are relatively easy for most plants to obtain. Multivariable change-point models of electricity and natural gas use as functions of outdoor air temperature and production data are then developed. The statistical models can be used to predict energy use for energy budgeting, measure savings, determine cost structures, and diagnostic purposes. Moreover, in …

Design And Analysis Of An Air Filter Sensor For A Residential Heating And Cooling System, Cheng Y. Lin, Steve C. Hsiung, Alok K. Verma, Gary R. Crossman

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

This is a design project of an air-filter sensor to be used in home heating and cooling system. The project includes conceptual design, analysis, implementation, tests and modifications. First, the air quality and power consumption between a clean air filter and a dirty air filter is studied. Then, a photo sensor circuit with an ultra high brightness LED emitter and a phototransistor receiver is used to detect dust particles. A red warning LED lights up when a specified amount of dust is collected on the filter and blocks the light beam between the emitter and the receiver. The emitter and …

Continuum Modeling Of Cell Membranes, Eveline Baesu, R. E. Rudd, J. Belak, M. Mcelfresh Jan 2004

Continuum Modeling Of Cell Membranes, Eveline Baesu, R. E. Rudd, J. Belak, M. Mcelfresh

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we develop a finite-deformation model for cell membranes with a view toward characterizing the local mechanical response of membranes in atomic force microscope (AFM) experiments. The membrane is modeled as a 2-D fluid continuum endowed with bending resistance. The general theory is used to obtain equations that describe axisymmetric equilibrium states. The membrane is assumed to enclose a fluid medium, which transmits hydrostatic pressure to the membrane, and a point load is applied at the pole to simulate an AFM probe. Both types of loading are associated with a potential and the problem is then cast in …

The Open Assembly Model For The Exchange Of Assembly And Tolerance Information: Overview And Example, M. M. Baysal, U. Roy, R. Sudarsan, R. D. Sriram, K. W. Lyons

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - All Scholarship

In early design phases an effective information exchange among CAD (Computer Aided Design) tools depends on a standardized representation for the product data in all PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) tools. The NIST Core Product Model (CPM) and its extension are proposed to provide the required base-level product model that is open, non-proprietary, generic, extensible, independent of any one product development process and capable of capturing the full engineering context commonly shared in product development [1]. The Open Assembly Model (OAM) Model extends CPM to provide a standard representation and exchange protocol for assembly. The assembly information model emphasizes the nature …

Mapping Of Thermo-Fluids Laboratory Experiments Into Web-Based Experiments, Sushil Chaturvedi, Rick Mckenzie, O. A. Akan, A. Priyadershini

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

A methodology is being developed for transforming physical experiments from the undergraduate thermo-fluids laboratory into a web-based virtual experiments. Important characteristics of physical experiments are identified in order to preserve them in physical to virtual domain mapping. Several commercially available software are employed to incorporate in the web-based experiments characteristics such as recreation of physical phenomenon in the virtual domain, measurement of physical quantities on a computer screen, assembly of virtual probes and coupling of the virtual experiment with a data acquisition software. A virtual reality software has been incorporated to enable web-based students to navigate through the virtual laboratory, …
